part 3 ~ the jacket incident
{ A/N- eehhee this was super fun to do, added a twitter and written part, this is where things start actually ramping up! }
the sound rang above your head as you stepped out of the busy street and into the quaint coffee shop you planned on trying. ever since the starbucks that sat in the plaza by the hospital shut down you've been looking for a new place to go and get your morning drinks. after the first time langdon got everyone coffee one morning he started bringing in coffee for you whenever you had a shift together, you weren't sure why. maybe it was because he knew you hated mornings and would probably fall asleep if you didn't have caffine in you, or maybe he was just nice, you didn't know why but at some point you started feeling bad. you knew he was a single dad and that the hospital pay wasn't a fortune, hence why you'd thought to try and ask for recommendations so that maybe you could lift that burden off his shoulders. a burden you never asked him to carry, but he carried it anyways.
mable's was a small family owned cafe on the corner of 4th and melrose, on the outside it was adorned with daisies hanging in baskets from the purple awning. the inside was warm and smelled like cinnamon, tables lined the walls as jazz music filled the air. you walked up to the counter looking up to the chalk board you could only assume was the menu. samira had recommended the caramel macchiato, but the thing about you was that you hated hot drinks, so instead you settled on ordering an iced caramel macchiato and a chocolate croissant.
fidgeting with your purse you stepped into line. in front of you stood a tall man holding hands with a small child, the kid had on a small jean jacket and her blonde hair was held up by two red hairties. the man had dark hair and was wearing a muted green corduroy jacket. for one split second a small smile spread across your face, the picture of this man who smelled of sweet tobacco in line at a cafe with his daughter warmed your heart, especially due to the fact that most days all you saw was families being ripped apart by illness, injury or a twist of fate.
"daddy can i sit?" spoke the little girl infront of you, "daddy!" she says tugging on the mans sleeve, luckily the barista had just finished making his drinks so as he muttered the woman a thank you he spun around to look at his daughter but instead caught your eye.
you hadn't recognized him in his everyday clothes, plus he wasn't facing you so you didn't blame yourself.
"y/n?" he muttered as a small smile spread across his face, "what are you doing here?" he asked looking at you processing the fact that you were there in line behind him. "frank, h-hi. i'm uh- i was in the area looking for a new spot for coffee, victoria and samira recommended it here." he nods. "good taste, this place is great. i come most mornings before work but- i had the day off so i figured i'd take penny out to the park but needed a quick hit before we went." at that your attention turned to the little girl clinging to his side, she was still looking up at her dad obviously itching to do something other then stand in line.
"this must be penny then!" you say crouching down to her level with a smile. "im dr. y/l/n, i work with your dad." you say extending your hand as she takes it, you stand back up again tucking a stray strand of hair behind your ear. "are you on your way to work?" frank questioned, "yeah i start at 8." you nod noticing the two cups of coffee he was holding. obviously his daughter didn't drink coffee, so who was the second for? was he back with his ex wife? or maybe he'd met someone new. why was this bugging you so much all of a sudden, what was wrong with your co worker maybe moving on and finding someone... maybe it was the fact that somewhere deep within you - the teasing was accurate, maybe you did want to see yourself next to him holding his hand, maybe you did fantasize just a little bit about what it would be like to wake up in his arms. but the reality was, he was your co worker, your superior, and he was currently holding a coffee that was probably going to be stained with some other girls lip gloss.
"it's funny running into you here actually," he speaks up snapping you out of your daze. "i was uh going to stop by the pitt seeing as it's on the way to penny's favourite playgroud and give you this." he says extending one of the coffee's he held.
wait a minute... that coffee, was for you? on his one day off he decided to stop by a cafe and bring you coffee. your chest flutters at the implications. "really?" you squeak with a grin as you take the ice cold coffee from him. "yeah no biggie." he says placing his now free hand in his pocket. the door then opened again, da-ding, causing a gust of wind to waft into the business. the scrubs you wore weren't of the best quality due to budget cuts made by gloria so as the chilly wind hit your frame a small shiver rolled down your spine. langdon noticed. and in one swift movement he peeled off his cord jacket and handed it to you before giving you a pat on the back and walking out with his little girl. "have a good shift"
