Volkswagen-Porsche Tapiro Concept, 1970, by Italdesign. An early design study from Giorgetto Giugiaro's newly formed studio. The Tapiro made its debut at the Turin Motor show and went on to the 1971 Auto Expo in Mexico City (pictured) and the Los Angeles auto show of the same year. If it was a serious proposal for a 914/916 replacement neither VW nor Porsche were interested and the flat-6 engined prototype was sold to a Spanish industrialist. In 1973 it fell victim to a devastating fire, suspected to be arson by activists protesting the owner’s labor policies.
