Cybernetics are the foundation of software engineering
Cybernetics (the study/practice of control and communication in systems) serves as the foundation of software engineering, even of computing more broadly. It provides a framework for understanding how systems maintain stability, adapt to change and reach desired states through self-regulation.
The mechanisms doing the work are feedback loops, which reach every layer of development. Thereby enabling engineer productivity, system robustness and agent reliability. When applied to AI, feedback loops reduce a system's sensitivity to any given LLM's quirks, so performance becomes model-agnostic and more consistent.
This is the shift from prompt engineering to harness engineering; cybernetics applied to agentic AI workflows. The goal is to create environments where agents handle repetitive tasks driven by feedback. While humans prioritize defining the rules, constraints and goals of the system. The future of software engineering is not about stronger prompts, but systems which self-correct.
