The reason I disagree with "cyclists are treated as second class citizens in America" is because it rarely comes with the addendum of "and pedestrians are third, according to the cyclists."
Context: I'm so tired of cyclists going faster than cars but also 'jaywalking' like pedestrians, ignoring 'no turn' signs, or turning left at a red light. They feel very entitled to both the road AND the sidewalk, even though there are bike lanes. They ignore the safety of people who are walking because clearly, as a not-car, they shouldn't be stuck in traffic, right?
Additional context: I'm in NYC. I spend a lot of time in Manhattan. There are a LOT of "almost hit" incidents because bikes move fast but also don't feel limited by the rules of the road. I genuinely feel less endangered by the cars at this point.
NYC bicyclists: speed like you're on a motorbike, jaywalkcycle like you were born in Brooklyn.
tldr: I'm fine with cyclists in concept, but I wish they were penalized for traffic violations the way cars are because I'm tired of having to jump out of the way of a racing bike trying to cross when they aren't supposed to. If you want to cross in a way that interacts with pedestrians, slow the FUCK down.
I realized an added element: in these crowded New York streets, it's actually pretty easy to keep track of possible traffic with peripheral vision because the possible areas are so limited and the cars themselves are so big and, in combination, slow. Cars move slow, and are big, and that means being able to keep track of my surroundings pretty well, especially because I can apply the rules of the road to them. If I check on a car half a block away from the red light, and the timer indicates it'll stay red a bit longer, and the car is moving slowly, I can be reasonably sure it'll stop at the crosswalk.
Bikes move faster, are smaller, don't respect red lights, hide behind cars unintentionally, and are not a big block of mostly solid color that I can keep a peripheral on. They are small and patchy and that's basically camo.
So if they don't respect road laws, and they often don't, it basically feels like they're coming out of nowhere.
I don't hate cyclists as a class but I do hate Specific Ones.
NYC is a pedestrian city, pal. Even Robert Moses couldn't change that.
[Brought to you by another almost incident that had me nearly struck by a cyclist AGAIN.]
I won't repeat my "Omg he's going to get himself killed and someone will get charged with murder". But it's safe to say for me Cyclists are the single best example I can think of to show how people will take advantage of something until there's a law blocking it.
They only care about the law because it protects them.
They don't care about Pedestrians because there's no law protecting the Pedestrians against them.

If I may add, this is not a problem only in America. I live in once was a small town and is becoming bigger each year + seasonal population since it's a prized vacation spot, in France. I have the exact same gripes, and have said as much this week to several people. Cyclists are entitled af and dangerous not only to themselves (getting hit by cars) but to others (how many nearly bowl over pedestrians, going way too fast on the sidewalk). And bike lanes are not even a problem! There's a lot of them through nearly the whole city, and they're good, most of them recent.
The problem is not the bikes, it's the people driving them.
Oh, I don't doubt it. The reason I specify America (though this also applies to Canada) is because a lot of urban planning left-leaning activists tend to frame cyclists as an oppressed class due to the incredibly heavy car culture of the US and Canada. Because cyclists here ARE blamed for their own deaths when the issue was, like, an SUV that's too high off the ground to see anything closer than twenty feet merging into the wrong lane. The car culture is BAD and it's definitely prejudiced against allowing bicycles to even exist.
But "cyclists treat pedestrians the way drivers treat cyclists" didn't seem to come up much in those discussions. Maybe it's because a lot of those activists live in areas that are either planned around cycling in such a way that pedestrians ARE safe (Netherlands) or are in areas where the car culture is so intensely dangerous that there are almost no pedestrians around to be affected in the first place.
Which is why I specify NYC, because. Well. We're a bit of an odd duck in the area of public transportation and generally walkability, for North America. Us and San Francisco.
Cyclist don't belong in the middle of busy roads where the the speed limit is going to get them killed. I say this a) knowing we don't have enough bike paths in the use and I feel sympathy for cyclists, and b) having nearly been run over multiple times by idiots on a bike who think that they get right away on anything just because they're on a bike.
I've actually reported cyclists for dangerous and recklessness - the one that stood out in my memory is a guy who insisted on cycling on a busy arterial road that had a lot of blind corners and was always packed with people going to, from work and school, plus city buses. He'd stay in the middle of the road, not letting anyone pass him and causing massive amounts of traffic to build up. People would get frustrated and try to get around him, but it was often too dangerous to do it. He'd even stay in the lane during a red light, just to not let anyone by him.
The kicker to me, is that there was a dual use path for cyclists and pedestrians not even a hop away. This guy went out of his way to be a risk himself and others around him by riding in the middle of the lane, while claiming right of way.
Every time I saw him, my heart sunk because I knew he'd a) add 20-30 mins to where ever I was going and b) dread of going, is this the day he gets hit by someone? I hope he never did, but dread that even if he didn't, his actions might have caused an accident he'd never be held responsible for.
The new Canadian prime minister announced the two countries’ relationship is “over.”
The White House has pretended that the steep tariffs on Canada are a bargaining chip to help curb illegal drug trafficking—a threat so minor that it warranted no mention in the Trump administration’s first Annual Threat Assessment—but Trump openly admitted that he hoped to use tariffs to bully Canada into becoming a U.S. state. His bullying has since escalated into an all-out trade war, which could potentially devastate states along America’s northern border.
Look, I know Tumblr is the website of chronically online introverts, but this is also the only website where I have any reach. And I live in America so this is relevant to me. So I'll go ahead and put this here.
Run For Something
Every year there's hundreds of positions that go completely unchallenged. Some of them for areas that you, the general American Tumblrite, probably care about.
I'm being so, so, so completely serious right now.
Run For Something
Run for something, and if you promise to never ban a book, the linked website and @fated-mates can get you in touch with volunteers for phone banking (aka letting voters know you exist, what you stand for, and convincing people to vote for you). Depending on your situation, they'll fund you, too.
(fated mates was more specific about helping Leftist candidates get $1000, but I'll let you listen to them on this episode and decide for yourself. I'm not affiliated with them.)
Women especially need to hear the message 7 times, according to some studies, to be convinced that yes, this is something they can do.
You can run for something! Run for something small. School boards. Municipal government. Run for something as a side hustle. Run for something because you're an empty nester and your book club stinks. Run for something so you can personally push things leftward, even if it's just one foot, that's one foot further towards your leftist goals no matter what they might be.
Run for school board because look at the fucking idiots currently running it. You know you're smarter than them. Fucking, if you've ever completed a school project you're probably smarter than them.
Run for something because Elon Musk is pissing you off. Run for something because you're trying to fight off despair. Run for something because you hate the idea that you can't do anything. You can do something! You can run for something.

I’m pinned on my side by one dog who has to sleep on my legs and the other one forcing his way into tucking himself on my chest so I’m twisted on 5 inches of a queen sized bed because who needs personal space or a comfy sleeping arrangement

I have 2 dogs - both labs, neutered males. Grift, the younger of the 2 is well known in my family, despite a pedegree of high level service dogs, and champions, as a Single Brain Cell darling. This dog has tried to climb a tree to get a squirrel who knew damn well he couldn't get 70 pounds of Too Eager For His Own Good up it, and has stood at the open door barking because there used to be a screen there. He's a Good Boy That Really Tries.
Anyways.
I've had a hormonal IUD for years, dating to 7 years ago. This means I haven't had a period for basically 7 years. When I got my replacement, only the copper was covered, so I said, cool whatever, fuck Trump, I don't trust the republicans to let me have this choice in the next 4 years, go for it.
I was warned I "may" have a somewhat heavy period for a bit. This was a loving understatement, holy shit.
Walter, Senior Dog and Also Good Boy, who spent his first year of life with 2 women spoiling him rotten is well used to well. Women having periods.
Grift...Grift is not. Grift came to me early, and I haven't cycled while he's been here. He has lost his mind. Mom is bleeding. Mom is hurt. Mom sit down and let me cuddle you and frantically lick your leg to comfort you. Mom why are you leaving, you're bleeding/hurt. Mom, here's my favorite toy. Mom, I've brought you a whole effing book from the bookshelf. Let me crawl under the covers and plaster myself to you. I'm going to lay on you until you tell me to get off you, I'm not a chunky boy, really. Mom, mom, mom, mom, mom....
Walter is just watching this dog lose his mind with the most grumpiest look known to dog kind. He is judging Grift so very hard right now. He's had to kick Grift off his spots on the bed, and couch several times and each time he does it by just...getting on the bed or couch and then LAYING on top of Grift, whose usually laying on me, causing me to start flailing and wheezing to get the fuck off.

Fuck I’m at a fencing tournament and literally a minute after I reblogged this my dad told me that he talked to the point people and I’m probably going to win a medal.
I need to follow up to say I reblogged this last night, and this morning I got some of the best news of my life, like, a life dream come true news thing.
FUCK, I though it was just another lucky meme but LISTEN. Since a week ago I was waiting a phone call to confirm me if I got a job or not in my university. I reblogged this yesterday’s night “just for fun and because I don’t want any bagel to be mad with me”, and today’s afternoon, while I was losing my time as always, the professor I was supposed to work with called me and asked me for my personal information to start working with her.
