There’s no reason to feel worse about Sherlock today than you did at any other time in the last eight years. The actors are always asked invasive questions by reporters and their emotions on the subject are always the same. Martin Freeman’s Telegraph article came out and now everyone’s surprised that he’s frustrated with the fanbase. No shit. I am also frustrated with the fanbase… and I am part of it. Freeman was asked to do an interview about his new piece of work and yet that reporter asked about Sherlock in order to get a better headline. It worked, I gotta give it to ‘em. He was asked about Benedict meeting him in the Marvel universe – no doubt “Everstrange” and “Freebatch” came up along with Johnlock (as they always do). As an actor and a relatively nice guy, Martin doesn’t care who ships Johnlock, he cares who ships Freebatch and how they can ruin his life. He’s been asked a million times by different people if he’s having an affair with Ben. This matters 1000x more than people online who write Johnlock fanfiction. Trust me. Martin is angry with the people who stalk where he lives and follow him home after rehearsals. He is angry with reporter after reporter asking him about Freebatch. Sure, Sherlock isn’t fun for him anymore – I get that. Sherlock is huge and it’s fanbase is a snarling monster. It’s the reason so few actors went to the LA convention last year. While Martin’s exasperation with all of this is wide-reaching, his anger is over those who can’t tell fact from fiction, when it comes to characters and real-life romance. When you read this article, remember you don’t see the questions – only the answers. When Martin gets angry, insisting ‘Ben and I aren’t fucking lovers’ he truly means it. He is right – there has never been a moment on screen where he and Ben are lovers, yet thousands of people (and reporters) are so sure Freebatch is real. The writer makes it seem like Martin is talking about Johnlock, even though in that sentence Martin is not referring to anything besides him and Ben. For the record, this isn’t me trying to convince anyone of the validity of Johnlock – simply to point out literally nothing has changed, there’s no reason to feel bad, and that Martin is only angry with the fans and reporters disrupting his life and his privacy, as usual.
