Nature Thoughts (and Corvid Update)
So, last year, I tried to start up a "Corvids be my friend" plan by putting out food. I ran into trouble with this:
o ADHD me has trouble with schedules o The squirrels
I tried using hot sauce to discourage the squirrels, but the fuzzy little bastards just developed a taste for spice (like the Better Half and Next Generation). So that's on hold for now -- I know what the solution is (give the squirrels their own special setup), but I just am kind of short on time and focus.
But I did buy a bag of "pollenator mix" and planted it, and the flowers are coming up gangbusters (note to self, get some vermiculite to () down the mix; I think it's too crowded). I have been looking for honeybees in the clover and other flowering plants and have never seen any, but today I went out and they definitely had Discovered my little patch. Look at the pollen baskets on that one bee!
They're southwest of my house (I didn't have my glasses on, but I could see that's the direction they were going). It's swarm season right now, so I am so tempted to run out and get a hive and stuff, but a) spendy and b) then what? I'd be committing to taking care of a 35-pound animal. So I'll probably just try to make sure they enjoy the flowers.
Plans are in place to start putting in a tallgrass prairie mix in various places around the property, so hopefully that will help them too (and encourage the presence of critters who eat mosquitoes and other biting insects). We went camping recently at a park with extensive prairie restoration going on, and although I noticed that there were a lot of little bugs, there were no mosquitoes (I didn't get bitten all the Hell and back until we got back home).
Bad news guys. The bees are back. They never left, but they’re making me aware that they’re living in my bedroom wall again. Not like they sting, they’re actually really sweet. They just keep getting inside and I have to bring them back out..
A dead tree fell in my backyard and revealed a honeybee hive inside. The bees are very docile and fun to watch. A local beekeeper said there is no queen and the hive is not healthy. The bees are dispersing on their own. May they find a good home and be happy 😊
