You know what kills me about Eva and Carl telling Grace goodbye?
'I know this is going to seem like a betrayal, but its not. Im doing this because I belive in you.'
And
'Your gonna do great buddy.'
And the fact I belive they genuinely believed that. Not just because the movie tells us they were right, its all the evidence the movie gives us up until that point. And can you Imagine having to do something like this to your friend? Can you imagine not just the guilt they both must have felt, but also the melencoly of giving up someone like that? Someone that you believed in, that never let you down and was just genuinely a person you vibed with in a way that took stress off of you? We see that Eva doesnt connect with people that deeply or get overly emotional, in spite of working so hard to save every person on the planet. Sure its her job and shes one of the people on that planet, but can you imagine how much she must have resented being the one that had to make the hard calls? If you boss (that you really probably dont like that much) came to you and said 'the company's going to go bankrupt and your going to be out of a job unless you send your dog to space' are you doing it? No, your gonna tell him to go fuck himself.and yes Im comparing Grace to a Labrador retriever or a cat or some domesticated pet not to dehumanize him, im doing it because he represents an uncomplicated relationship in Evas life. At the end of the day, he's the guy that made everything better, and was probably the least demanding and just generally easiest person to deal with, until it was time to let him go.
And CARL. Dont get me started on CARL.
Those two grown men made a baby together amd had fun doing it (not in the way your thinking if you havent seen the movie, but TRUE). Carl was, what? Security? Secret service? Around alot of top secret shit all the time and stood on the fringe for some of the coolest discoveries in his lifetime; do you think any other scientists ever had him be part of an experiment? Do you think anyone else looked at that stoic badass and though 'oh, maybe he'd like to be a part of this?' would any of those intelligent, hyper focused, ego inflated useless waste of carbon have given him credit even if they HAD?
I doubt it, HIGHLY. Reality and the big bang theory taught me people get very shady when it comes to getting recognition.
But Grace approached Carl like a colleague from day ONE. And maybe he would have gotten to the end result on his own, but it wasnt a question in his mind about whether or not Carl 'deserved' to be included, if he was 'smart enough' to understand what was happeing or not. I havent read the book uet, but I firmly believe Carl was involved simply because Grace looked at him and said 'do you want to help?' And Carl DID. He probably wanted to help SO much, on so many projects but no one every bothered to ASK HIM.
Until Grace.
And what kills me is that probably no-one ever bothered to ask Carl again, And I bet he felt the absence of that deeper then he thought he would.
And that kills me; they knew they were betraying him because he BEGGED them not to. but they knew there was nothing they could do about it because they KNEW he would do a good job. Because he had put in the work to show them on a personal level that thats who he is.
And I know they missed him, on a different level then the other astronauts and scientists, they missed their friend.
And they were probably so relieved when they got confirmation that he made friends with an alien, and were nkt surprised at all.
And I know this is probably a pretty obvious take by now, but project hail marys still trending and Im still emotional about it, so Im going to talk about it.
