Until the day our paths cross again
What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.
Women want me. Fish despise me. Even docile ones will attack me. I am not welcome in their holy places. Flowers don't care about me, but aggressive ones will attack me. I am not welcome in their holy places. Frogs-
the thing about art is that sometimes you'll be moved to tears by stuff that is not very good

the recent discourse around "'horrendous' gas prices in the US" reminded me that exchange rates are misleading ! and many people don't realise this. exchange rates do not account for the relative cost of living between countries, and so it doesn't actually show how expensive things *feel* for the average citizen in a real and practical sense.
for example, take the fuel prices as of today, 20 July 2026. with the price from the state of New York (source) converted to litres, and the prices from Europe (source) and South Africa (source) converted to US Dollars at today's exchange rates of $1=€0.88 and $1=R16.51 (per Google)
United States (N.Y.): US$ 4.15 /gallon = US$ 1.09 /ℓ
Germany (average): EUR 2.10 /ℓ = US$ 2.40 /ℓ
Spain (average): EUR 1.54 /ℓ = US$ 1.76 /ℓ
South Africa (coastal): ZAR 25.23 /ℓ = US$ 1.53 /ℓ
and that's where people usually stop. but it doesn't account for the relative cost of living in each country. like yeah, $2.40/ℓ in Germany is objectively higher than $1.53/ℓ in S. Africa, but the average salary (even in low-paying jobs) is much higher in Germany than in S. Africa, so this doesn't really reflect how much of a burden that is, relatively, to the average person
so we need to adjust the rates for PPP (purchasing power parity) of each currency. this takes into account the average cost of groceries, good and services, average salaries and wages and other market factors, etc. I'm using the latest IMF Rates from April 2026 (source)
United States: 1:1 PPP rate = Intl$ 1.09 /ℓ
Germany: 1:0.72 PPP rate = Intl$ 2.92 /ℓ
Spain: 1:0.60 PPP rate = Intl$ 2.56 /ℓ
South Africa: 1:7.49 PPP rate = Intl$ 3.37 /ℓ
notice how Germany and Spain have different PPP rates, despite both using the Euro, because it's based on local cost of living. and how South Africa, like many countries in the global south, has a drastically undervalued currency. which makes things cheap for tourists here, but is Not Great for locals.
and to be clear, this isn't just about fuel and oil and the US war on Iran. the exchange rates are always misleading like this
its not funny but i do think about it a lot
This made me think about this panel from Calvin and Hobbes:
But unlike the adult in this strip, Calvin’s dad actually APOLOGIZED for yelling at him when he saw how guilty his kid was:
today i took the worst photo of a loon one can possibly take while remaining identifiably a loon
loon :)
i painted my loon :)

i have a lot of critique for endfield which is fuckin rich coming from a guy who writes ardashir and is actively excited for future patches but theres so much stuff being transparently set up and so many ways theve already shot themselves in the foot for future developments in said telegraphed direction that i have to see how it actually goes
simultaneously already being familiar with arknights is both a huge boon and a huge demerit because on one hand you can clearly see where theyre echoing concepts from arknights
(ex. endmin, foundation and the Lady as oracle, priestess and the twins: in matters of acceptable sacrifice, forcing ones own ideals upon the other, how to look upon a fledgling civilisation; the clear but extremely messy line between ursus-as-embodied-by-kashchey's underlying concept of a kind of freedom of violence and nefarith's desire to seize her own victory outside of that conflict of ideals by means of violence foremost)
but on the other hand you are constantly comparing the ingame text with arknights. and it only seldom quite measures up. you see where it still has potential and yeah its live service and its only been half a year since release and got knows og akn took a bit to get rolling but the amount of factions already in play and the flat and insufficient ways theyve been established are making me feel insane.
even the qingbo/wuling conflict which has felt like the strongest attempt at conflict between terrans like what we could see if we check the news today felt tidy. wuling was so nice and didnt actually ever punish the stockaders for infractions and shared resources whenever they had enough so its clearly the stockaders being irrational, and most of the stockaders simply let their resentment simmer nonviolently and the chief beat the shit out of dissenters hard enough that it was a-ok, and we dont even know what made qingbo and wuling part ways in the first place, unless ive missed a weapon description somewhere.
the most interesting we got is terrans having come from originium which was a precursor creation and alleikhreos being a precursor construct putting them at a similar level from a precursors standpoint (ex kaltsit) and alleikhreos therefore being an example of a model minority/part of the ingroup vs the outgroup of terrans refusing the precursors' so-called rightful dominion.
ig part of this is that we have got to start thinking of the precursors as just as human. how do all their fantastical inventions and starfaring measure up when terrans have found the ability to do much the same if given time? what right do they actually have to call themselves gods, simply for being the people who came before? why should we?
seaborn too are an allegory for imperialism, consuming, destroying, assimilating. how much of the eldritch is the manmade gone out of control?
but also this doesnt excuse the fact endfield has so far just established the terran factions as good intentions vs malicious actors

have you reopened the wound? will you reopen the wound? when will you reopen the wound?
honestly the problem with games that have a msq/sidequest split is that a lot of the "making you actually care about the stakes/little people of the game" are in the sidequests but the sidequests due to being lebeled as sidequest will probably feel vastly less relevant
dont even get me into weapon and item descriptions. the vast majority of people will not read or realise they exist but they cant be left out of meaningful analysis of the storytelling and scope of established lore, but the fact that the game itself makes them so hard to find in the first place is also a salient critique point. this is a clear strength the visual novel has as a medium also because you get more text for less resources and mostly the one main avenue for text
