he cannot communicate his needs at all, so he keeps living for others, but it’s not because he wants to meet their expectations or construct a facade (looking at mike here), but because he was parentified so early, he never had a chance to learn what he wants because he needed to care for his mom and younger brother from an early age. so he finds his purpose in sacrificing himself for others. jonathan is passive and selfless and that's his biggest problem.

and of course it makes sense that he turns to drugs to avoid thinking about his crumbling relationship and his NYU dream dead, because he learned this coping mechanism, when he was a kid and his parents argued a lot, so when it got ugly he would put on loud music to dissociate from what was happening at home. again, jonathan's defense mechanisms are rooted in passiveness, avoidance, and dissociation.

jonathan's character is so beautifully constructed, the groundwork is all there, and honestly i love that he broke up with nancy and went to NYU to make his niche arthouse horror film in the fake-ass finale, but I would really love to see more to his arc. because it's still not clear what exactly jonathan desires, who he will become when he stops being an observer and takes action, especially if that action is purely selfish for the first time in his life

Friday nights have been your favorite thing since you and Jonathan started dating.

Every night around 6:30 pm you’d start to get ready for your weekly dates.

Jonathan doesn’t seem to understand why you insist on getting ready a whole hour before you guys are supposed to leave, though he doesn’t truly mind.

He enjoys watching you switch from the bedroom to the bathroom every five minutes. Being so hell-bent on your appearance.

“Jon, aren’t you going to start getting ready too?” You ask him, peaking your head out of the bathroom.

Jonathan looks up, blinking twice. “We don’t leave until another forty minutes.” He gets up and walks over to you in the bathroom. “Besides.. you know, I take maybe fifteen minutes at most getting ready.”

“Which is something I don’t understand about you, Jon.” You say as you look in the mirror fixing your hair.

“I mean, you have changed your shirt at least three times now in the span of ten minutes.” He chuckles. “Though I’m not complaining at you at changing in front of me.”

“Don’t be such a perv.” You roll your eyes at his statement while laughing.

“I’m just telling you the truth, I like knowing you’re that comfortable with me.” He says.

“Why wouldn’t I be Jon? You’re my boyfriend.” You look over at him after finally being satisfied with your hair.

“Yeah, I know. Just saying, it’s nice.” He shrugs

and comes behind you to wrap his arms around your waist.

“You know what else would be nice?” You tilt your head slightly to look back at him.

“Hm?” He looks back at you.

“You getting ready.”

steve: “do you think we’ll still be together in different universes?”
