A (mostly) Complete Breakdown of Jancy in the Epilogue Scene
I cannot even tell you how satisfied I was with this epilogue scene after everything in season 5. I will admit that pre-ST5 I would have considered the epilogue incredibly weak but my expectations were in the gutter post-ST5 vol. 2... so much so that I committed the cardinal sin of skipping ahead to the epilogue before watching the full final episode.
And even without having the in-episode Jancy context, and before Matt Duffer explicitly stated that the epilogue leaves the door open for jancy to get back together, I was immediately deeply satisfied with the ending and with the hope they gave jancy DESPITE the fact that this epilogue is possibly my least favorite of the series. Did I want an actual jancy one-on-one conversation? Of course, but it's clear that writers wanted to have each of our "classic" groups: kids, teens, adults, tie off their final moments together.
Ultimately, I think the following aspects encapsulate why the scene was so pro-jancy: framing, dialogue, reaction, and something I'm calling "hang time"
Framing
The scene seems to be bringing together two dynamics into one friend group and the staging of the scene reflects this.

And it's not just camera angles, they have a physical divider (cooler) between them as well
Beyond the symbolic dividers between these groups, we have Robin knowing all about Steve's job when jancy seem oblivious, And we have Jonathan and Nancy in their own little world moments (which I'll talk about during the dialogue sections).
This framing also allows for close, character-focused framing to include their partner.
In summary, the scene is set visually to divide these two pairings into sides of a friend group and this tracks with how these two pairings were the strongest relationship dynamics for each character within that age range (kids, teens, adults).
Dialogue
Not even including the words spoken, there are frequent sidebar interactions for both groups which includes one of my favorite jancy dynamics: soft spoken, being stuck in their own little word moments where they check in with one another.
But the lines are also pro-jancy.
Nancy is open and interested in New York. Jonathan is passively inviting her as well as the larger group but knows she the most likely to be able to visit from Boston.
Leaves the door open as Nancy is not and has not dated when she left for college. It at least implies she's not seeing anyone right now.
These moments, especially Nancy mentioning the plan to film Jonathan's movie, show that Nancy's not going to let Jonathan "disappear" and avoid their group plans. That she wants him there most of all.
This line connects back to their season 3 argument where Jonathan points out that Nancy doesn't know what it's like to have to support herself/family with work and that "the real world sucks." This line I interpret as an acknowledgement that she is trying to get that experience and signals that 1) she's been thinking about him and 2) reflecting on their relationship and the things she would do differently.
And though this may come across as me having a jancy bias, they don't give the same openings and considerations for st*ncy. Steve talks about how great living in Hawkins and Nancy says she doesn't miss it. When Steve tries to get the group to meet up monthly in Hawkins, Nancy shoots it down and asks for more neutral territory. They also don't have the same quality of reactions and "hang time" as the jancy moments.
Reactions
Jonathan and Nancy are show to react to one another significantly more than the other two and the type of reaction is also different than the rest of the group.
Frequently they are the ones directly reacting to big reveals from each other
They also feature their tandem reactions which shows they're on the same wave length
Or they have the more measured, quiet reactions of the group. I think the reason why the quiet reactions hit me so hard is because it goes back to the Jancy dynamic we have come to love and to see that persist in its unique way while other characters respond differently just highlights what they have is unique.
"Hang Time"
This is a combination of aspects that combine to form uniquely pro-jancy moments. Here, "hang time" refers to the silence, time, and framing of moments between Jonathan and Nancy. I call it "hang time" because these moments force you to pause and sit with the moment and allow jancy to react to one another. The scene slows down and keeps you in their interaction. In many reaction scenes, they give jancy silent space and time to react whereas with the others its very conversational and quick. You can feel the "hang time" in many of the previously referenced scenes, but here is the clearest "hang time" moment:
Stocking Our Sandbox
Ultimately, the story is over and this is all up for interpretation, but the scene itself provided such a clear path for reconnection post-series and gave us so many avenues to explore.
Nancy dropped out of Emerson and seems to not be too happy in Boston. She has a trainee position but isn't tied down anywhere long term. She's isn't in a relationship currently and it's implied she hasn't been dating.
Nancy seemed genuinely interested in Jonathan's claim that "they [she] would really dig New York." Boston and NYC are easily accessible by train.
Jonathan is insanely happy in NYC, at NYU, and is obsessed with his art. He didn't really mention any friends or dating but he does perk up when Nancy's dating life is brought up. We can interpret this in a few ways but I choose to think it means he has thrown himself into his work to avoid missing Nancy but now they have the chance to reconnect.
Though they plan to meet up monthly as a group, who knows how feasible this is, but Nancy clearly wanted to ensure Jonathan wouldn't back out of their plans and they have the easiest travel between the two of them and are the ones most likely to meet up post epilogue.
New York is rich with opportunity for Nancy as she begins living in "the real world" and trying to find her way in journalism.
And the fact the the show is over and their parting gift was to stock our sandbox not only with fresh sand but with a bunch of fun tools to create with is.... a kindness, at least.

Do you ever think about the fact that they had Jonathan choose to let Nancy go but then immediately back tracked by making all of their interactions super romantically charged? Or is that just me?
jancy s2 is my favorite thing in the whole planet like nothing NEVER will had the same impact on me in the way they did. they changed my life and i'm so serious about it. the yearning, the angsty, the tension, THE BUZZ i spend all their scenes blushing so hard they were my everything they had such a beautiful young love story to explore and those brothers took them away from me i'll never shut up about them and tbh i think i'll never love anything the same way i luv them
So Jonathan is great at compartmentalizing his feelings and problems and needs and convincing himself that everything is fine because what other option is there, so while I know he missed Nancy desperately, I think there's a good chance that he was able to stuff it all down a lot of the time and basically carry on business as usual. I mean, look at him when he's "letting her go". He's come to a decision and made peace with it. It sucks, but so many, many things in his life have sucked.
But Nancy. Oh, our girl Nancy. No one does obsession like Nancy. She can refuse to talk about her feelings and shut down emotionally for eighteen months, but she can't ignore what matters to her. She's not getting over shit. I can't even fathom the amount of things that remind her of Jonathan on the daily. Girl sees a red light and starts thinking about the darkroom. She sees a band poster on a bulletin board and wonders whether Jonathan has heard of them. She curls up in her bed in Boston and wonders how he'd fit beside her.
And then she shows up in Hawkins and she's like yeah I'm fine I'm doing great this independence thing sure is something.

the jancy breakup said a lot about them and how much they loved each other. normally, when thinking about breakups, we imagine the worse case scenario with angry shouts and agony but their case was the opposite: they broke up in the most intimate and heathly breakup scene ever. there was no fight, no resentment, no one to blame. just two people letting each other go because they were in love and wanted the best for each other even if it meant going their separate ways. you can see that he loved that girl with all his being. in the moment he understood that she needed space, he knew what to do. she was letting her heart out for him in the way she never did to anyone before. they reconized they would never find anything like what they had together and i do think that scene was the most in love they ever sounded and looked in the show. they knew it had all worth it, they knew it was a once in a lifetime kinda thing. they tried to fix things, heal their wounds, but for some reason (those brothers), they weren't meant to be together at that moment. for my mental health, i like to think that after a few years, after having the opportunity to see the world without traumatical influences and to met new people, they eventually found their ways back together.
Wild to me how they broke up Jancy because the trauma was too much and it was suffocating, only for their ending to be stuck together in a friend group that was also built on that same trauma, and making promises to meet once a month to reminisce about those traumatic times (if they’re not helping Jonathan with his movie of course).
There’s this music video with Lola Tung and the bartender looks like Charlie if you squint (someone called it out in the YT comments even) and it’s a Jancy AU in my head.

it's so special to me the way you can notice so clearly how jancy's relationship changed them. there's a jonathan before and after nancy's impact (and ofc the same thing happened to her because of his impact). he was able to realize that he can ALSO be cared for and not always the only one who takes care. that at the same time he can see through her, she can also see a part of him that he never showed to anyone else. i deeply stand by the idea that there's a whole word inside of him that no one will ever be able to get to know in the way she did. even thinking about them in other relationships in the future, no one else will ever understand what happened to them, what they get overcame together or the level of connection that they had. she was his first love, first gf and the one by his side even in the worse days of theirs lives. he waited for her, she waited for him, and honestly, they're still waiting. it doesn't mean just waiting for come back tgt , but waiting and rooting to see each other's happiness. i try not to be so crazy about them but ik she was the light of his life and changed him 4ver i do NOT play about them
