Hmmmm, maybe it’s different in other countries? When I used to live in Russia, I genuinely only knew like 2-3 people who were aware of his existence, Just now, I went back and checked my old history school textbooks: two mention him only on one page (when discussing Seven Years’ War). The third one states that Prussians fought in the Seven Years’ War and that Peter III liked Prussian culture but that textbook doesn't name Frederick at all. None of the textbooks include a portrait or any biographical details - so he really is presented like an insignificant figure on the margins of history.

In Britain, I also very rarely met people who knew about him - even when I attended history societies at the university. When I mention him in casual conversation (big mistake) I usually get blank stares or “I don’t know who that is” type of response. But I’ve never had this reaction when I mentioned Marie Antoinette or a more recent historical figure like Stalin or Hitler.
