What follows is the final for my GRAD 599: Creating Happiness course. The prompt is included along with my responses.
Each of you will create a presentation that highlights a self-directed plan that includes the principles from this course. Your poster will highlight the principles of PERMA that interfaces with your life involving:
the incorporation of positive emotions through meditation, identification of character strengths, healthy thinking, etc.
empathy, I have often shut down or tried to become more hostile to getting to know people because of the pain and investment of energy they require on some level. I have often struggled with getting in control of my emotions and aligning my actions and values. I say Empathy is one of my strong suits as well as being very able to decide on something and then achieve it. I feel like my strength in empathy makes me a better professional, better partner, and better human. I think I should embrace it instead of finding it a nuisance.
engagement in an interest or activities on/off campus
I have recently gotten into Baking. I would love to continue to make new treats to share with my neighbors, new office and friends. It requires skill, but it also is rooted in being productive and alone in the home and then sharing that product with others in a gesture of love and nuturing, literally ticks all of my boxes.
the development of relationships
I am in a long term relationship with my partner, Sean. I am hopeful that we will be moving towards a lifelong commitment soon. He and I have a dog named Tucker who is also very much a part of the positivism in my life. Additionally, i have made great relationship bonds with my cohort mates in the CSSA program and am going to miss all of them dearly. I know that I can count on them to help me be a better me, and to change the lives of students and people wherever they go. I could not have shared my experience of Grad School with more perfect human beings. I am going into a new role, a new institution and a new team. i will be developing new relationships which can be draining but rewarding. I am hopeful that i can form close bonds with these people as well so that my work has another layer of meaning and fun.
finding meaning in the classes, activities, and events that you attend
I find meaning in work I do because it helps other’s reach their goals and aspirations. I enjoy being a support structure that others can depend on to lift them up to new heights. Additionally the office I am going into has a strong belief in students as holistic people. The office encourages personal knowledge construction and sharing at conferences and wants everyone to continue personal growth beyond just the office services.
the development of your strategy for achievement
As I shared in one of my journals for this class, I have pretty low standards for achievement. I simply want a home, a lifestyle that is moderately free from financial worry, and a child. I would love to learn how to garden in my spare time and eventually publish some works of poetry but all of those are ‘side achievements’. Soon I am going to be celebrating a period of achievement in finishing Graduate School and finding the entry job of my dreams.
