I'm really happy with how this one turned out! I was trying to make a model that captures the look of the classic sprites from multiple angles, and the effect works surprisingly well! This Mario is definitely number one.
There are hundreds of Super Mario skins for Minecraft out there, often with these exact eyes and boxy nose. So my goal was to improve on the usual take and add my own spin on it.
So far I'm just making these models for the fun of it, but maybe in the future I'll actually try putting them in Minecraft.
This Mario gets to be short, with a head almost as big as his body, like it should be. No stretching him into the shape of the Minecraft avatar.
(Despite saying he should be "short", he only ended up one pixel shorter than the default Minecraft avatar because of his big head.)
I spent a while trying to figure out how to capture the look of Mario's round, sloping cap, using as few polygons as possible. Eventually I settled on seven polygons, not counting the flat brim of his cap. That's not bad, considering the rest of his body is the normal five polygons.
I'm gonna have lots of fun making reskins for the many, many versions of Mario, like the different color palettes he uses in each classic game, his power-ups, partners that give him powers like Baby Luma and Cappy, etc etc. Wahoo!

Thoughts on Rick and Morty, S9 Ep2 - "Seven Days, Rick Nights"
What the hell, the first two episodes of season nine are really good? Like, rivaling Vat of Acid? (Rivaling.) After the majority of last season, I was not expecting this quality. And I thought last season started badly, got a bit better, and then had a finale that had no right to be as good as it was that just brought together the whole season.
And I'm keeping my expectations reasonable about the pool boy episode next week, but considering the pool has already been set up, I wouldn't be surprised if it was good, or effort went into it. There's a weird amount of connective tissue between these episodes. Ep. 1 revealed the pool, and then at the end Rick says "I need a vacation" and this episode was that vacation. Next episode is the pool.
Still keeping my expectations reasonable, but...this sort of gives some credence to the season finale being something serialized? Five percent likelihood of Evil Morty breaking out of time prison?
It's impressive that Rick and Morty can still make an episode about Rick's depression and still make it feel unique. What makes this episode stand out is just how impossible it is for Rick to escape his own lifestyle. Even if completely replaces his memories, two things quickly sabotage any humble, country living he tries to adopt: his tech, and his personality.
Not only does Rick's tech reveal his identity to "Ted" during the robbery, but in the second half of the episode, Ted basically corrupts his friend group and any life he's known by equipping them all with cyborg attachments. Bowling and fishing mean nothing when you have extending arms and laser eyes. All the activities that these guys normally bond over no longer require any effort, so there's no meaning in them anymore. Ironically, saving Ted and flying to the Smith household in their bowling spaceship is the last real struggle that bonds these guys together. After that, there's nothing to struggle over anymore.
And then there's Rick's personality. Ted would NEVER push the red button, because he's just Rick with implanted memories. Why would Rick ever push either button when he has this asshole telling him his whole life's not real? Trashing the whole RV was the only response Rick would ever have.
I've seen a lot of people say that the technology in this episode is an allegory for wealth and how it changes people's lifestyle and relationships. I also think Rick's cyborg tech is a more on the nose symbol for the convenience of smart tech. Ted and his friends live on a planet that still exists in the 90's, before the internet took over everything. Before everyone had a smartphone. Before AI was a thing.
This is going to make me sound old, but friendships were different when face-to-face, IRL was the default. Sure, you'd have pen pals and friends you only talk to on the phone, but a lot of friendships would depend on who you see during the day. And instead of catching up with them online, you'd spend time doing actual activities with them, akin to bowling or fishing like Ted's group. Or building a spaceship to get revenge on your friend's alter ego. Just 90's stuff.
That makes me wonder though: why would Rick pick this planet to vacation on in particular? Why would Rick Sanchez, of all people, feel nostalgia for the 1990's? At first, I thought this was a case of the writers really projecting their own nostalgia onto Rick. And maybe it's a little bit of that.
But then something occurred to me: the 90's are probably the last decade that Rick spent with Diane and C-137 Beth. Or at least the late 80's - the floating timeline makes either a possibility.
Because Beth Smith is canonically 34, and has been 34 since the show premiered in 2013. We don't know how old C-137 Beth was when she died. But, that "Young Beth" looks pretty similar to the Young Beths from the episode where Beth and Space Beth de-age themselves back to 10 years old. So if we do the math...
If we consider Beth to be 34 in 2013, that would make her 10 in 1989. There's plenty of variability there to add a few years, but here's the point: the last time Rick felt like a reliable father and a husband was between the end of the 80's and the beginning of the 90's.
Rick went to this planet to be "Simple Rick" again. And he couldn't do it.

Please stop buying Harry Potter, a free zine. Printed January 2026. Feel free to copy and distribute in book stores, libraries, neighborhood little libraries, and at conventions and conferences. No credit required. See this guide for how to cut and fold this single-page, one-sided zine.
Transcript of the zine:
Page 1: Please stop buying Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a worldwide phenomenon. Unfortunately, J.K. Rowling is using the popularity of the series to attack transgender people’s human rights.
Page 2: Recently, there has been a moral panic about trans people. A lot of it is recycled from anti-gay rights campaigns in the past.
Image descriptions: The first image features a man holding a protest sign that reads, "NO Men in Women's Bathrooms." The second image shows a Daily Mail article headline that reads, "Children 'Put At Risk' By Gender Ideology In Schools." The third image shows a newspaper article about Anita Bryant that reads, "Popular singer became known for opposition to gay rights." The picture of Anita Bryant shows a protest sign that reads, "Sign petition here to repeal Metro's 'gay' blunder! Save our children from homosexuals!"
Page 3: To be clear: Trans people have existed throughout human history and across cultures. Suggested reading for trans history: Transgender History (Stryker), Trans History (Combs & Eakett), Before Gender (Erlick).
Page 4–5: J.K. Rowling is not just "being mean" on Twitter.
Yes, she bullies trans people and cis women she thinks are trans. She also funds hate groups and spreads dangerous misinformation to her millions of followers. In 2024, she donated 70,000 British pounds to an anti-trans organization’s effort to petition the U.K. Supreme Court to take away trans rights. They won.
Image descriptions: Five newspaper headlines. Headline one reads, "JK Rowling accused of 'Holocaust Denial' over posts about transgender persecution in Nazi Germany." Headline two reads, "JK Rowling and Elon Musk named in Imane Khelif's lawsuit over Olympics gender row. Rowling referred to the boxer as a ‘male’ and accused her of ‘enjoying the distress of a woman he’s just punched in the head.’" Headline three reads, "JK Rowling donates £70k for legal challenge on defining a woman." Headline four reads, "How JK Rowling funded a legal battle that curtailed trans rights in the UK." Headline five reads, "Harry Potter and the Supreme Court Ruling - are the new cast tainted by association?"
A screenshot of a Twitter post by JK Rowling dated April 16, 2025 shows Rowling sitting on her yacht while smoking a cigar. She wrote, "I love it when a plan comes together. #Supreme Court #Women's Rights."
Page 6: J.K. Rowling has said that any support for Harry Potter tells her that she is right and that people support her anti-trans actions. She is using her immense wealth, fame, and social power to violate human rights. Any attention or money that the Harry Potter franchise gets goes directly to harming trans people.
Page 7: "But what if my child asks for Harry Potter?" We often underestimate children's intelligence. Tell them what I’m telling you: Harry Potter’s creator is using her fame and money to attack a vulnerable group of people. As long as she is doing this, we cannot support her by giving her money and attention.
Page 8: No one is perfect. But consider giving these authors and their works a try instead:

Animorphs by K.A. Applegate
So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane Duane
Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce
Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
I've been watching The Orville. I remember watching some of the episodes from Season 1 and 2 on TV with my mom and waiting for it to come back. Then later I heard from my uncle that Season 3, "New Horizons" is like a completely different show. Now that I've gotten to Season 3, it is definitely a weird transition from the goofy, fun finale of Season 2 to the somber, emotional plot of the Season 3 premiere that I don't think would have even been allowed on network TV. But I like it!
On one hand, Season 3 is a lot better at giving the stories the room they need to be satisfying. In Season 1 and 2, there are so many episodes that had great ideas, but didn't go that one extra step they needed to. I'm only two episodes in (Claire is feeling like the main character at this point) but so far I feel like Season 3 has basically fixed this problem. And it's probably because this season spends less time, in Seth Macfarlane's words, "shoehorning jokes" into the dialogue, and just tells the story naturally.
On the other hand, without those network-mandated jokes, Season 3 is lacking some of that warmth that came from a half-comedic, half-serious show. MacFarlane's goal is to just let the comedy flow from absurd situations that naturally come from the plot. And I know from YouTube clips that there are going to be a good number of them in later episodes, so it's not going to be all dark. But some plots - like the continuation of the Issac arc, for example, are better off with a serious tone that doesn't lend itself to comedy.
I'm not sure about calling Season 3 a different show entirely. Streaming was bigger back in 2022 when it premiered, and it wasn't unusual to give a popular show that made the jump to streaming a bigger budget and less constraints. But nowadays with the streaming wars ruining everything, there is a bit of nostalgia for the kind of network shows that The Orville started as - a comedic Star Trek tribute. I'm not sure how popular that nostalgia is, but I think a lot of us miss long running shows that weren't ashamed of filler, and could make lighthearted comedy work at the core of the show without it ever feeling like it was shoehorned into the dialogue in the first place. So maybe the fact that the Orville writers even felt like the ideal version of the show would be less comedic kind of illustrates a flaw at the heart of the show in the first place.
So I disagree with my uncle - it still feels like the same show. It's just offering something different in Season 3.

I think it was KA Applegate in Animorphs who had one of her technologically advanced aliens (Andalites my beloved) remark in astonishment to a human that we are such curious creatures because we think computers are better than books just because we invented computers second.
It feels like something that would appear in Animorphs. Then he went on that you can open a book to a page and the information is there instantly and unchangeably. He listed many strengths of books there. I haven't thought about this for years. I've always loved computers and books and I don't know that I fully agreed with Elfangor or Ax or whoever it was that said this then, but I totally get it now
It was Ax, in Book #8: The Alien: "Books are an amazing human invention. They allow instant access to information simply by turning pieces of paper. They are much faster to use than computers. Surprisingly, humans invented books before computers. They do many things backward."
