i bet the pain will end if i arrange a perfect enough sentence about it
*turns my attention inwards* mmmmm. no *turns my attention back outwards* oh god
[bravely] women in tv and movies should also have hairy armpits more often because it would be hot if they did
i went to the intersection of the sacred and the profane and everybody knew you

thing I am proud of: when the doctor started going on a weird rant about long covid not being real I paused and listened to his nonsense for a bit and then very calmly said, in a polite and curious tone, "you don't believe in post-viral illness?" and he like. stammered a bunch and was like OH WELL I'M NOT SAYING -- I DON'T...I just think ..! and backpedaled awkwardly while I just sat there like :3c interesting :3c thank you so much for clarifying your stance on this :3c
an important skill for chronically ill people to develop is the ability to treat the doctor as though they are simply a person you are interviewing to find out how much they know about your condition.
my fav thing in the entire world is witnessing people try new things. almost teared up at this bc i love it so much
this could be us
I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
Hey OP, love your scalding take here; don't forget about commutes.
Once you factor in commute times (which even for short distances can be grotesquely inflated due to the fact that so many people are all commuting at the same time, but that's a different conversation) many people are actually devoting upwards of 10-12 hours a day on "work related tasks."
It's not just the hours & the commute either, it's that employers have completely normalized lean-staffing to the point where people don't even notice it anymore.
People in my parents' generation probably also worked long hours, often both parents, but they actually had down time. They could chit-chat with coworkers & customers, who were usually people from their own community. My father is a mechanic and no matter where we went, he'd run into someone whose car he'd fixed.
My mother also knew the cashiers at our local grocery store & would chat with them whenever we were there. It was normal and not seen as employees "wasting time".
Now if you go grocery shopping at a small local store, the cashier is probably running around doing 2-3 people's jobs and doesn't have time to talk to or get to know anyone, and is absolutely exhausted after every shift.
That has happened to all of us in some capacity. Because of decades of employers just... firing people & off-loading their work onto the remaining employees.
they really don't respect the time of disabled people. your application can take up to 12 weeks. the specialist waitlist is 3 years. your assessment will be any time within the next 6 months. let us know if you cannot attend this appointment you waited 7 weeks for and we'll reschedule next year. we've decided to assess you at this time and day and you have to be available or any support you dared to apply for is not going to happen. and in between these long bouts of waiting you have to survive the everyday

something that might be hard to grasp is that. physically disabled people can do everything "right", follow all the recommended programs from doctors and medical practitioners and lose weight and do this exercise and that diet and this and that and they still can stay disabled. they still can get worse.
and it's imperative to understand that. doing things this way can be soul crushing. it's difficult, if not impossible for some people. and many people will not be able to do things "right" and will stay disabled or get worse. some people might, accidentally or on purpose, make their disability worse themselves. and those people don't deserve to be disabled any more than people who you think doesn't.
we cannot, cannot assign a moral value to disability. disability isn't a punishment for doing right or wrong. it is not a judgement. there is no moral value associated with being disabled.
people you find wonderful will be disabled. people who you think suck will be physically disabled. people who had no pre-existing condition, who did everything "right" and were healthy before will be disabled. people who had absolutely no means to change their lifestyle, because of poverty or location or some systematic issue, will be disabled. and people will be disabled as a direct result of their choices.
none of that, absolutely none of it, is an indication of whether that person "deserves" to be disabled or not. none of it is a reflection of their moral character. disability is simply a neutral fact of life.
I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.
It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.
