Also importantly, and quite simply. Children are weird (positive). Children can have very vast imaginations, they think up all sort of "strange" things. When a system forms in childhood, they will be influenced by the sorts of things the child is imagining and consuming. Daydreaming is a very common coping mechanism in dissociative disorders. The kids are gonna come up with some weird stuff, that's just what children do.
