I get the historical reasons for it but it's still wild to me that "[Person name] and the [nouns]" used to be such a common band name pattern. If I was forming a pop/rock band in the 50's/60's and the singer/band leader/most famous member proposed calling ourselves that I'd try to convince everyone else to beat him up together.

Okay as I mentioned in the replies, I think maybe "historical reasons" was too strong of a term for what I meant, so it was probably a poor choice of word on my part. What I was alluding to with it was that to me this trend seemed like a natural progression and evolution of the way jazz groups in the early 20th century used to be called things like "[Guy name] and his magic orchestra" or "The [Guy name] quartet" or stuff like that
