Every time i see a cute picture of sheep in the briddish countryside I'm like aww but then the nasty little commie in the back of my head goes "sheep herds like this were the commodity responsible for the enclosure of the commons/highland clearances as well as the destruction of native woodlands and uplands"

people who complain about dinosaursĀ ānot being scary anymoreā because its been discovered they have feathers and are closely related to/ancestors of birds are so bizarre like
its not about how scary they are, they are/were real life animals and what matters is learning more about them, not how well they fit into your science fiction horror film lol
can you imagine a 13 foot chicken running at you with full intent to eat you??? thats fucking terrifying holy shit
peacocks are synonymous with vain, frivolous beauty and they will attack cars. they will attack you while you try to get to your car. theyāre like six feet of useless feathers and they will destroy you. imagine if they were carnivorous and had functional spurs.Ā
a t-rex could look like a gay disco ball and i guarantee that you would fucking book it if it had a problem with you
listen
listen
have you ever met a swan
if anything the birdier they get the scarier they are
Australia literally fought a war against giant birds AND FUCKING LOST
@kidwithheadphones
Overheard in the student lounge:
āOh man, I canāt deal with birdsĀ ācause theyāre dinosaurs and sometimes itās like they get this glint in their eyes and they remember.ā
āHave you ever interacted with a goose?Ā āCause those things are dicks.ā
If chickens were still the size of a T-Rex weād all be dead. No question.
Feathered creatures that give some serious lie to the idea that feathered dinosaurs aināt scary:
This is a bearded vulture, or lammergeier. Itās four feet long and has a nine foot wingspan and it eats bones.
This is a shoebill stork. It dropped the duck without biting down shortly after the picture was taken, but if it had decided not to-
⦠it could have been the end of the road for that duck.
This is the last thing a fish sees before a macaroni penguin eats it.
This is a secretary bird in the act of demonstrating to Lord Voldemort that he came to the wrong neighborhood, ese.
This is a goose.
This is a vulture.
This is a cassowary on the attack.Ā
Be glad I couldnāt find the actual gif of a pelican swallowing a fish, because itās freakinā Lovecraftian in its HEADS SHOULD NOT BEND THAT WAY factor. Youāll have to settle for the idea of a feathered dinosaur suddenly going GLORP and devouring its victims whole just like this lady here.
Steven Spielberg didnāt create these. These are the feet of an emu.
And this is what happens when a swan (this one is named Asboy; his father was Mr. Asbo, the first swan in the UK to get named after an anti-social behavior order inĀ āhonorā of his tendency to attack boaters) decides it doesnāt like you. I should probably note that this one attacked a cow.
Respect the feathered dinosaur, yo.
Terrifying. The last two illustrate why you did not fuck around with the Children of Lir.
I suspected that a dinosaur could have been feathered after I heard that a T-Rex is the chickensā ancestor.
For those who think dinos arenāt cool because theyāre featheredā¦whatever, mutherfuckers. Ā Evolution doesnāt give two shits what you think is cool or not.
You showed a cassowary on the attack, but forgot to show what exactly itās attacking with. Their feet are nearly identical to the Emuās, except for one minor, teeny tiny detail: A five-inch claw for killing motherfuckers, raptor-style.
contrary to popular belief not everyone has an innate sense of internal gender or care to have one or seek a name for it, some people go their whole lives without questioning their occupation in one of two gender roles, but for some people, if pressed, they don't feel that internal sense of 'i am a woman' or 'i am a man', and in that case i feel the switch over to transgender vs cisgender relies on active identification of a gender other than the one they were assigned. if someone's like 'idk dude I just work here' then that's valid
#i would describe my gender as not exactly 'idk dude i just work here' #more like.....when someone assumes you work somewhere that you don't #but you know how to help them so you do it anyway #my gender is wearing a red shirt at a target
These are the best tags
Those are my tags! And apparently they A) pissed off a TERF and, more importantly, B) were something that resounded with a handful of people, which is nice.
You know how in a lot of computer games you get setup screens and you can tweak your character in lots of ways? Some people, for some games, really care about getting their character right. Itās important to them that these details fit who they want to be for the game, which might be leaving them as default or might mean changing them a bunch. But then some people just take whatever the game gives them as default and click next without really caring.
That second one is me for gender.
I sometimes describe my gender as āfemale by default.ā I was assigned female at birth, given a female name, people identify me as female and use she/her pronouns for me. So I just shrug and go with it. I donāt feel particularly strongly female, but I donāt feel strongly about it enough to feel non-binary or agender or anything else either. My reaction is just a āmeh, I guess Iāll roll with it.ā I donāt care enough about my gender to bother being/presenting as/identifying as anything other than the default people usually perceive me as.
This is why I identify as non-binary and not trans. This is a really important aspect of being agender that isnāt captured by binary trans vs cis discourse. The way I feel about gender is constantly being erased by trying to fit me into that discourse.
There is something that BOTH trans and cis people seem to feel about gender that I. Just. Donāt.
Iād really rather not talk about gender at all with regard to myself. I donāt understand what people mean when they say they āfeel like a womanā or āfeel like a manā. Iāve come to learn that they really do feel that way and itās important to them, but itās something Iām never gonna understand.
It's not that I don't think about my gender, it's more I've thought about it and don't really give a shit.

thinking about whale falls
(inspired by the work of @catadromously )
āItās anecdotal, but I regularly see Frankensteinās monster described as a warning against scientific hubris, an alarum about Tampering With Things That Should Be Left Aloneā¢. This I think is quite wrong: I think it is a story about what happens when one fails the (still at the time of writing) radical enlightenment by failing to take social responsibility for oneās actions and interventions. If itās a warning, itās a warning about turning oneās back, out of cowardice, on what one creates, not about creating it in the first place.ā
ā China Mieville
To address an objection that folks raise literally every time I propose a slightly oddball tabletop RPG premise: if your main difficulty running tabletop RPGs is that you canāt use any premise that requires creative buy-in from your players because they treat the game as an exercise in intellectual combat and will gleefully seize on any incidental plot hole or tiny semantic ambiguity to derail and destroy any semblance of a coherent narrative, the issue isnāt some fundamental flaw of the medium ā the issue is that youāre playing with jerks.
And this has absolutely nothing to do with the distinction between adversarial and cooperative play. Adversarial ā i.e., player-versus-player or player-versus-GM ā gameplay is a fine thing, but it only works if all parties agree on the basic ground rules theyāre operating under; in a tabletop RPG, the gameās creative premise is part of those ground rules. Trying to beat your GM in adversarial play by spiking the gameās premise is like trying to beat your opponent in a game of chess by insisting that youāre actually playing checkers.
Do you ever lie awake wondering how the heck Gimli knows what a nervous system is
Clearly dwarves have medical knowledge far more advanced than that of the other races.
His Majesty Dr. Gimli, son of Gloin, Neurosurgeon, M.D.
gimli trying to explain his studies to legolas, a flat-earther
#*scroll down* #*remember that middle earth is canonically flat for elves and round for everyone else* #*scroll back up & smash that reblog button"
tired: legolas took gimli to valinor with him because they were bffs/in love/etc.Ā
wired: legolas took gimli to valinor to prove the world was flat after arguing with him about it for decades
Sorry itās what to elves
So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth).Ā But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven.Ā To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphereā¦but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk.Ā So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.
This is why Legolas can see for such great, almost impossible distances. The Earth does not curve for him.
Legolas said fuck the horizon

āBut what have the neoliberal technocrats of our society replaced this total erasure of the language we need to understand power dynamics and systemic oppression with? An obsession with peopleās surface behavior. This is not really a coincidence. By defining racism or sexism as merely an embodiment of personal bigotry, weāre able to believe in the monuments of our great myth of cultural growth like Obama, while still simultaneously maintaining systems that continue to brutally oppress and kill people. Our popular culture has become so steeped in a deeply cynical sort of practicality, where many of us are able recognize the contradictions and hypocrisies of modern society, but we also cynically accept that we canāt really do much of anything about them. The awareness of this incremental progress being largely the result of a long-term collective struggle becomes completely erased and co-opted. By making displays of bigoted behavior as the ultimate embodiment of evil we have a built-in justification for moving selfishly within the system because weāve displaced our shame of our own cultural complicity with the destruction our way of life causes onto a convenient scapegoat. This, it turns out, opens the door for people to use bigoted language we have deemed ātoo farā as a show of power and dominance. People like Milo Yiannopoulos are the end point realization of this thinkingāāāa reality that sustains itself off of a fantasy world completely insulated from any awareness or understanding of the collective struggles of the past. A reality completely nurtured by the self-fulfilling fantasies of hyper-rational objectivism. Instead of technocratic liberals being motivated by some faint glimmer of empathy or awareness for the power struggles of the past and present, the alt-right has come to understand them as simply weak and submissive ābeta cucksā, controlled by the irrational manipulations of the deficient. In this view, thatās the only reason the privileged technocrats canāt stay true to the principles of their hyper-rationalist reality. The point here is that if we accept society is a true perfectly balanced meritocracy, the end result will always be fascism. But we cannot really demonstrate that Trump, Bannon, or Milo have an actual substantive vision for how to further realize the reality they purport to push. Theyāre merely more opportunists rebranding old neo-Nazi rhetoric and echoing self-interested cynical capitalism taken to its logical conclusion. Even if the people who supported Trump are aware and donāt care that this manipulation will inevitably effect them negatively as well, they still have a vocabulary and mainstream visibility with which to air their beliefs within now. And we cannot ignore how the rhetoric of and conditions created by technocratic neoliberal capitalism supplied them with this. Maybe the biggest shock of our current reality is to accept that there is no benevolent parental figure in power that we can appeal to the moral goodness ofāāāthat our government has become a horrific carnivalesque smash and grab for the super-rich because it was always oriented towards that direction. The real shock in losing what we thought was a solid underlying narrative governing our society is coming to the acceptance that the horrors that seemed so far away from us were actually there all around us the whole time, being incubated and stoked from within our well-intentioned, well-meaning ranks. The real shock is in accepting that a deftly composed, eloquent and friendly murderer is still a murderer, and only opens the door for bigger, grosser murderers.ā
ā āHow Technocratic Hyper-Rationalism Has Birthed Right-Wing Extremismā, Liz Ryerson, Medium, 2017.
āOne common therapeutic strategy [when working with suicidal patients] is to talk about how much the patientās parents/friends/girlfriend/pet hamster love them, how heartbroken they would be if they killed themselves. In the absence of better alternatives, I have used this strategy. I have used it very grudgingly, and Iāve always felt dirty afterwards. It always feels like the worst sort of emotional blackmail. Not helping them want to live, just making them feel really guilty about dying. āSure, youāre a burden if you live, but if you kill yourself, that would make you an even bigger burden!ā A++ best psychiatrist. There is something else Iāve never said, because itās too deeply tied in with my own politics, and not something I would expect anybody else to understand. And that is: humans donāt owe society anything. We were here first.ā
