I remember the first time I came to this realization.

I was nineteen, pregnant. We couldn’t afford to heat the house because we couldn’t afford the deposit to turn the gas on. It was miserably cold. The duplex we were renting was old and rickety and drafty. The window frames were messed up and there were cracks you could stick your finger through that were open to the elements.

Just, like, to give you an idea where we were financially. And this was better than we’d been doing before!

Anyway, I had recently started going to DSA meetings. And that month, they were talking about how a moderate democrat had successfully gotten a small increase in WIC benefits monthly. It came out to, like, $10 a month.

The members talking—mostly male, almost all doing decent—were scornful. The democrat should have pushed harder and gotten more, refused to accept anything until everyone else caved to their demands. I remember sitting there, quietly drinking the latte in the smallest size they had that I had bought with scrounged quarters, listening. Wishing it wasn’t held in an indie coffee shop because it was a luxury I really couldn’t afford, but it would be rude not to. Enjoying the coffee anyway.

I was one of the lucky ones who was getting that additional $10 a month through WIC. Even more exciting, we were now getting a voucher for the farmers’ market. I casually mentioned that WIC recipients would now be getting farmers’ market vouchers, too.

The guy who organized the meetings was a hard worker, passionate guy. Did something in tech.

He was like, “That’s the thing! These people don’t want farmers market vouchers. They want—” and he went on to describe a bunch of pie in the sky desires. That, yeah, sounded good.

But one. I was one of those people! A lot if the tamiles were super excited about it, myself included.

I had never been to a farmers’ market before. I tried arugula for the first time, a piece pulled from a bunch by the grower as he explained the flavor difference. I hadn’t known before then that different lettuce greens had different flavors, that it was more than just the texture and shape. I tried pesto, which delighted me. Goat cheese. I got three full pounds of strawberries for two dollars, since they were closing soon and the old man selling the berries got a kick out of me.

Anyway. It was like, you have a decent life. Not great but decent! The things that are life changing for me, for us… you already have.

The ten dollars at the grocery store made the difference between a meal of broken-noodles-with-some-half-horrible-pantry-scraps and a meal. It kept me full and healthy! And the additional farmers’ market voucher was world changing for me.

Hey all! I am looking to put an awesome, laid back staff team together to get up a modern day personified panfandom spirit site with powers.

I am not good at graphics so we definitely will need to nab someone for that unless one of you is really good.

I am currently using a free skin so we don't have a naked forum, but we will need a coder so that we can get a full set of templates or if y'all really like then maybe we can comission em for more templates? Doesn't hurt to ask!

I'm looking for a total of 4 other people who are all 18+ cause we are gonna be jcink premium and allow mature content and all that. You don't have to participate in mature content or anything but you need to be comfortable with it being around.

Anyways the very basic plot is that the spirits were all killed off in their worlds and then reborn into this one with no memories of their past lives but still retain some connections with personality and maybe even a similar backstory. There is no expectation for members to have their characters ever remember their past selves either. Some may get back some memories, some may get back all. But on the flip side, some may never remember. I really want the plot to be open and for things to be member driven.

The powers folks choose may also mirror what they had in their past lives but it won't be anything required. Each character will be allowed 3 powers each.

There will be a wide variety of material to adapt from including Greek, Roman and Egyptian mythology as well as fairy tales and legends. Of course popular tv shows, games, movies and animation so there won’t be any original characters but with it being a spirit site...well there should be a lot of room to make the characters feel like your own.

Players will be allowed to race, gender and bend sexual/romantic orientation as long as they don’t whitewash or make a cannon lgtbqa+ spirit into a cis/straight person.

The application process will be just a shipper. People can do a full history in there development if they want.

Activity will be very lax, only requiring members to post once a month and we will do an activity check every month to keep things clean. There will be three different absences that players can make if needed, however an absence can only cover activity checks twice in a row unless it’s an emergency.

Uhh what else? Oh making a character. The first six will be free! After that I want to see 1ic post and plotting with 5 other characters and a total of 10 posts. But listen I am not a hard ass and I actually don’t mind counting ic games, technology and self development for proof of the 10 posts. Because plotting is super difficult sometimes and honestly I don’t see a lot of good plots that come from a place of doing it because you have to for a new character...so yeah requiring 5 plots let’s us know someone is trying to get their characters out there without exposing people to stale plots you know?

We will all be sharing responsibility for accepting apps, doing claims, keeping the boards clean and advertising as well as answering questions.

We will all simply be STAFF no admins/mods.

With my work schedule I will be quiet in discord but I will do my best to interact when I can. Just please don’t take it personally!! I am always open to plotting on a 1x1 level.

Who knows about Sally Hemings?

She was Thomas Jefferson's slave.

Called his "mistress," but how can you be a mistress when you were a slave, a child, and could not consent? Had absolutely no choice?

She bore him 6, perhaps as many as 8 children. He kept her locked in a basement room.

The room was recently unearthed, and DNA evidence has proven the lineage of Sally's children.

She was beteeen 12 and 14 years old when he started raping her, and Jefferson was in his forties. He freed the children that he had with her, but not Sally. Her daughter had to free her mother after Jefferson passed away.

This is not taught in schools. This side of history. We are supposed to consider the founding fathers as great men, fighting for justice and freedom, guided by God... when they are evil men. Selfish men who did nothing, save that it was for their own aggrandisement, personal benefit, and financial gain.

I would also like to add that Sally was Jefferson's dead wife's half sister. Sally's mother was raped by her owner, who was Martha (wife of Thomas) Jefferson's father.

These people left a legacy.
