Come Alive!
Hey all! I am looking to put an awesome, laid back staff team together to get up a modern day personified panfandom spirit site with powers.
I am not good at graphics so we definitely will need to nab someone for that unless one of you is really good.
I am currently using a free skin so we don't have a naked forum, but we will need a coder so that we can get a full set of templates or if y'all really like then maybe we can comission em for more templates? Doesn't hurt to ask!
I'm looking for a total of 4 other people who are all 18+ cause we are gonna be jcink premium and allow mature content and all that. You don't have to participate in mature content or anything but you need to be comfortable with it being around.
Anyways the very basic plot is that the spirits were all killed off in their worlds and then reborn into this one with no memories of their past lives but still retain some connections with personality and maybe even a similar backstory. There is no expectation for members to have their characters ever remember their past selves either. Some may get back some memories, some may get back all. But on the flip side, some may never remember. I really want the plot to be open and for things to be member driven.
The powers folks choose may also mirror what they had in their past lives but it won't be anything required. Each character will be allowed 3 powers each.
There will be a wide variety of material to adapt from including Greek, Roman and Egyptian mythology as well as fairy tales and legends. Of course popular tv shows, games, movies and animation so there wonât be any original characters but with it being a spirit site...well there should be a lot of room to make the characters feel like your own.
Players will be allowed to race, gender and bend sexual/romantic orientation as long as they donât whitewash or make a cannon lgtbqa+ spirit into a cis/straight person.
The application process will be just a shipper. People can do a full history in there development if they want.
Activity will be very lax, only requiring members to post once a month and we will do an activity check every month to keep things clean. There will be three different absences that players can make if needed, however an absence can only cover activity checks twice in a row unless itâs an emergency.
Uhh what else? Oh making a character. The first six will be free! After that I want to see 1ic post and plotting with 5 other characters and a total of 10 posts. But listen I am not a hard ass and I actually donât mind counting ic games, technology and self development for proof of the 10 posts. Because plotting is super difficult sometimes and honestly I donât see a lot of good plots that come from a place of doing it because you have to for a new character...so yeah requiring 5 plots letâs us know someone is trying to get their characters out there without exposing people to stale plots you know?
We will all be sharing responsibility for accepting apps, doing claims, keeping the boards clean and advertising as well as answering questions.
We will all simply be STAFF no admins/mods.
With my work schedule I will be quiet in discord but I will do my best to interact when I can. Just please donât take it personally!! I am always open to plotting on a 1x1 level.
Perks: You get 8 free characters!!
You can reserve four faces and four spirits for three weeks! (Members can only reserve three spirits/faces for a total of two weeks).
Link will be given to whoever I pick! I am still working on making the actual forums.
Interested in making this happen? DM me for my discord.
iâm a show runner for doctor who between 2005 and 2009 i need help budgeting my show hereâs what i have:
special affects: 13 dollars and washing a film studentâs car for them once every other week so they can do the affects on a microsoft desktop home computer
david tennantâs accent coach: 5 dollars
musical score: 3,000 dollars
ambient light varying in color to bathe billie piper in: 10,000 dollars
please help me my coworkers are so angry at me
#favorite thing about this post#is the implication that david tennant doesnt really have that accent cjvjfjdjd
he doesnât, heâs Scottish and was putting on an English accent for the role
this is literally news to me i feel lied to
would now be a bad time to mention his birth name is David McDonald
There was another actor named David McDonald and it was against union rules to have two so he had to change it.Â
OP, you should make it clear that this budget is not for the Estuary accent that David affected throughout the series, as he already had that skill himself. This budget is obviously for that one episode with Queen Victoria where he, a Scottish person with a Scottish accent playing an English person with an Estuary accent, pretended to have a bad Scottish accent. That was #acting and it was well worth the financial support. My real concerns with this budget are that it appears to be in dollars, and that it implies that British film students have cars. This is unrealistic and unreasonable
911 I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A MURDER.
You mean you want to report an Axe Murderer
Well I for one certainly didnât ever expect to post something positive that AXE body spray had to say.
Normally, I think that this whole sort of âCompany is being funny on twitterâ thing is bad⊠but, AXE is a product which is extremely strongly linked with teenage boys. Teenage boys, who are a key demographic for AXE, are also key targets for radicalization by alt-right/neo-nazi/white supremacist groups. Maybe⊠just maybe, companies like AXE, which are seen as âcoolâ to these kids, standing up and saying âYou know whatâs super lame? Being a fucking homophobeâ, just might get a few of them to not follow the path some dark corners of the internet want to lead them down. I donât know. Â

âNah buddy, look for another one, this one is mine!â

Gentle reminder that role play is a hobby. It is something that we writers do for fun/as an escape for reality. But reality still exists and sometimes people donât have the wherewithal to do a post. Even if someone has nothing better to do-if they donât want to do posts but feel like they HAVE to-then it is not fun. If you are unhappy with the activity of others on a board, join another! Or start your own. But donât take your expectations of others out on others.
Let me tell you what happened to me an hour ago:
So Iâm at the bus terminal and this guy (whoâd been following me and hovering over me for 10 minutes) comes up to me and says âhey beautiful. Can I talk to you?â So I said âno thank you.â He goes âI just want to speak to you, though.â And I said âyeah I know that and Iâm not interested in talking to a strange man at a bus terminal. Please leave me alone.â So he stands there watching me. Finally he says âlisten, thereâs no need to be difficult. I approached you politely like a gentleman so I donât see why youâre saying no. Now just let me speak to you.â I said ânobodyâs being difficult my guy. You asked a question, I gave an answer so weâre done.â Then he says âyeah but the answer you gave me made no sense. Why donât you want to talk to me? You donât know what kind of person I am. Youâre judging me before you know me. Youâre being ignorant and prejudiced soâ- Just then this other guy whoâd been sitting close to me said âmy nigga shut the fuck up! I saw you following her and stalking her like a fucking animal or some shit, like you didnât think she didnât notice? Sheâs probably scared of your predatory ass and I donât blame her. Mans need to understand you donât follow girls and shit. That shits corny.â So the guy goes âyo, mind your fucking business.â And the other dude says ânah because I see you harassing this girl and as a man this becomes my business. You thinking you were polite doesnât mean a girl has to speak to you. Be nice because youâre nice, donât use that please and thank you shit and think somebody has to speak to you. Youâre not a âgentleman if you donât respect her. Take the L and go catch your bus you fucking creep.â So the guy starts swearing and then walks away. The guy whoâd defended me is like âyou okay tho? Like real talk I donât really like men because of shit like that. Theyâre fucking predators man. I do what I can when Iâm able to for women because you donât deserve to be hunted.â
This is literally how you do it.
Men, this is how you ally with women, right here.
A concept: mermaids in wheelchairs
Another: shapeshifters with stretch marks
Religious vampires trying to find ways to balance their ideologies with their needs
Sirens learning sign language so they can communicate without enchanting anyone
Disabled fairies who canât fly pushing for accessibility
Spirits helping save people from fires and other natural disasters because they can access areas too dangerous for the living
Dragons becoming foster parents and providing super safe homes for âhordesâ of children until they grow up
Female werewolves with facial hair and body hair not letting anyone make them feel bad about it
Fae snatching children from abusive homes and raising them in safety while the changeling wreaks havoc
Liberated genies using their power to fight for human rights
Witchy cooking shows where witches try to make specific potions or find creative magical solutions to problems
Psychic psychologists and medical doctors who are able to figure out exactly how to help even if their patient is non-verbal, young, or afraid of being honest because theyâre with an abuser
Psychic teachers knowing just what to do to help students with learning disabilities
Yes please.Â
I just slammed the reblog button so hard my phone broke.

Wishing a speedy recovery to Anthony Borges, 15. Used his body to hold a door closed to protect his classmates. Shot 5 times Hero.
Thereâs a GoFundMe for him. I donated $5 and the total is about $30k as of now (2/18/2018) but hopefully more can be raised to help bills.

Kid who protected other kids from a school shooter with his life has to ask for donations to cover the cost of recovering from being shot. Capitalism at work!
Please donate if you can. This system is evil, but we have to do our best to not lose our humanity in it.
Donated and boosting.

George R.R. Martin: dragons are huge ferocious beasts who answer to a master Â
Tolkien: dragons are annoying, talking assholes
One interesting thought on this:
Fairy tale dragons? Theyâre like Smaug. Theyâre arrogant, talkative, they hoard treasure, they eat virgins. Theyâre amoral rather than evil, but they are intelligent monsters.
The dragon in Voyage Of The Dawn Treader, the one indirectly responsible for Eustaceâs draconic curse is along the same lines.
At that time that is what a dragon was. There was a general consensus in western literature that dragons were, well, that.
In Medieval stories, dragons are to be killed by brave men. Gawain fights âwyrmsâ - a kind of wingless dragon. St. George slays a dragon. So does Beowulf. So does King Arthur. To be a worthwhile myth hero you have, at some point, to slay a dragon.
Early modern and nineteenth century dragons - we see one counter example - Faustus chariot is drawn by dragons in âDoctor Faustus.â The first really solid âfriendly dragonâ story is The Reluctant Dragon, which became a 1941 Disney film. That is the first story I can find about a dragon that befriends a human - but itâs friendship, not âhuman masters dragon.â
The second friendly dragon is E. Nesbitâs âThe Last of the Dragonsâ who decides heâd rather hang out with the princess than fight the prince (the first example of subversion of the dragons eat maidens trope that I can find).
But theyâre the minority.
In the 1930s, when Lewis and Tolkien were writing, dragons were the bad guys. The rare exceptions were dragons deciding not to act like dragons.
Then something happened.
That something probably started with a 1948 childrenâs book called âMy Fatherâs Dragon - about a kid who runs away to Wild Island and rescues a baby dragon. Heard of it? If youâve studied kid lit, sure, it won a ton of awards. OtherwiseâŠnope, and certainly in Dawn Treader, written in 1950, dragons were still bad.
In the 1960s we start to see a couple more âgoodâ dragons. But itâs almost always the same thing. Dragons are bad, except this one. This is a special dragon.
Then in 1967 John Campbell ran a story in Analog named Weyr Search. Heard of that one? Yup.
It was part of a novel called Dragonsflight, written by Grand Master Anne McCaffrey.
And she completely changed what dragons were.
Anneâs dragons were gentle, genetically engineered protectors who bonded to a human rider at birth and were âmasteredâ by that rider - the dragons offered instinct, but the reason came from the humans.
Anne McCaffrey was one of the first female authors to write science fiction by women about women - and while she had a number of flaws and was honestly a better worldbuilder than writer she inspired a lot of people.
And changed our view of dragons as a fantasy trope.
Since then most fantasy writers that include dragons have them as friendly and willing to be ridden by humans. Even the âgoodâ dragons in the DragonLance novels.
In other words: In the space between Tolkein and Martin, whoâs first short story collection was published in 1976, almost a decade after Weyr Search Anne McCaffrey turned dragons on their head.
Daenerysâ dragons owe more in their lineage to Ramoth than they do to Grendel, the dragon slain by Beowulf.
(In other words, literary evolution is fascinating).
@pinkpurlknits
Wait, wait, can we also talk about the genre McCaffrey helped establish? Say what you like about Political (Romantic) Fantasy (and there is a lot to say, since it was hella white until this century), it didnât just remake dragons. It remade the public image of what Fantasy is as a genre.
McCaffrey came from a romance writer background. She brought that ethos with her when she migrated - namely, that plots should revolve around character and relationship development, that people are complicated, and that Real Fantasyâą isnât giant wars, impossible quests, and morality tales but instead complex and evolving societies and the individuals who try to navigate them. She was also, as jenniferrpovey said, a better worldbuilder than writer in a lot of ways. This helped redefine what parts of a world need to be built to satisfy the audience. Tolkienâs legacy was history and language; McCaffreyâs was society and politics.
You donât have to stan McCaffrey, MZB, Lackey, Kurtz, Rawn, Kushner, Flewelling, Hobb, and Cherryh to understand the impact that their work had on the concept of what western fantasy is. Most English-language fantasy TV series this decade have been Political (Romantic) Fantasy. A large portion of YA fantasy novels carry at least some of its elements. It makes for good plot and easily latchable characters.
So dragons, yes, but also the very core idea of what a fantasy story should talk about has been impacted by a series of women, often mentoring and supporting each other through cowriting, editing, etc. If anyone watched the Hobbit movies and wondered what was up with all the changes, this was up. The genre has changed; audience expectations have changed. You canât just write 22 chapters of a fairy tale anymore (unless youâre McKillip or McKinley, and even they dip their toes). People want to know what characters other than the protagonist think and feel, what their motivations are. We want to watch relationships evolve. We want to know what makes the world tick now, not just 4000 years ago.
So hat-tip to the literary queens who forged a path. Because of them, you can have your badass dragon queens. (And yeah, thereâs a reason Daenerys is a woman. She owes a lot to Lessa.)
wait for a surprise
