Gilgamesh and Enkidu, central figures in the Ancient Mesopotamian poem “Epic of Gilgamesh” dating back to circa 2100 BCE. Enkidu was formed from clay and saliva by Aruru, the goddess of creation, to rid Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, of his arrogance. However, they came to be friends, go on adventures together and love each other deeply, until they are separated by Enkidu’s death. Gilgamesh understakes on a long and perilous journey, in the second half of the epic, to understand the meaning of life.
