avinatan or was held completely alone (without any other hostages) the whole 2 years in captivity. due to his isolation, he knows very little of what happened since 7/10. he was kept in terrible conditions and was starved by his captors. he's very weak and thin, and lost 30-40% of his body weight.

elkana bohbot saw his family fight for him in protests and on the media when he was allowed to watch tv. he was held exclusively in tunnels for the whole two years, and lost his sense of time. most of the time he was in chains. one time, when he realized it's his wedding day, he begged his captors to let him wash himself as celebration, which they eventually relented to. he's suffering from stomach pains due to recent overfeeding, as well as pains in his arms, legs, and lower back

matan angrest underwent horrible torture in the first months of captivity, and was kept alone for a long time, and wasn't allowed to even relieve himself for days on end. he made up his mind to never surrender to his captors and the thought of his family kept him going. he's suffering from damaged sight, partial memory loss, flashbacks, and sometimes consciousness loss. his hand and fingers were injured and severely burnt, and were treated without anesthetics, which only worsened his situation.

evyatar david is very thin and weak. he was starved even after his famous "grave digging" video and underwent physical and psychological abuse, which was harder for him than the lack of food and water. he was overfed near his release, but realized what was happening and tried to ration his portions.

alon ohel suffers from shrapnel wounds in his torso, and headaches. his wounded eye is undergoing tests to see if his sight can be saved. there's a piano in his hospital room, and he's already played it. when it was announced that idf intended to recapture gaza city, hamas deliberately transferred alon into the city.

gali and ziv berman were disconnected from the outer world for long stretches of time. they were held separately, but in the same general area. they were often starved, but there were times when more food was given to them. some of their captors spoke hebrew with them (unlike the other hostages, who learned arabic in captivity).

ariel cunio was kept alone for two years, which resulted in much uncertainty for his wellbeing. david cunio was kept with eitan horn and nimrod cohen, in several tunnels (except for the short time he was allowed to stay with yarden bibas, per yarden's request, after the murders of his wife and kids). for a long time, david didn't know if his twin brother, eitan, survived 7/10 - the last text he got from eitan was "i'm burning" (his house was set aflame).

omri miran counted the days in captivity and the number of places he was held in (23), so he always knew what date it was. he was held both in tunnels and above ground. he would play cards with his captors and cooked for them - they loved his cooking. once when a deal fell through, his captors were pissed at hamas for not taking israel's offer.

maxim herkin lost 30kg off his weight and suffers from injuries and issues with his jaw.

Before I begin, I want to say that this is of course, speculative and that it is important to take this with a grain of salt. I'm also, like everyone else, uncertain if this game is a sequel, prequel, AU, or even taking place at the same time.

I am operating under two theories:

Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave takes place in another continent in the same universe as Fódlan. Possible candidates include Dagda, Morfis, Almyra, or even another continent that hasn't been mentioned as of yet.

This continent follows Sothis as their Goddess but does not follow the Church of Seiros. Think of it like Christianity, with different practices like Catholicism, Methodist, Baptist, etc.

With these points established, I want to start with Sothis herself. The name Sothis derives from the name Sopdet.

Sopdet is the ancient Egyptian name of the star Sirius and its personification as an Egyptian goddess. Known to the Greeks as Sothis, she was conflated with Isis as a goddess and Anubis as a god.

I bring this up because Sopdet herself is known in different regions and has differing names based on the region. Much like how Greek Gods have different Roman names. Her reach and influence might be enough to influence multiple nations.

And of course, I should address the obvious here, a return to the Greco-Roman influences seen in the trailer (possibly even North African). Two of our leads have Greek names: Theodora and Leda.

Let's start with Theodora (an anagram of Dorothea!). It is a name of Greek Origin, meaning "Gift of God". A famous bearer of the name is Empress Theodora, wife and a chief advisor to her husband, Emperor Justinian. There's much speculation that she may have come from humble origins, even with stories claiming she may have been an actress or a prostitute. This could somehow lend to the idea that our Theodora is fighting for recognition, fighting to the top. Either way, the name clearly evokes that of a queen and Insys wants you to know that, damn it.

Second is Leda (one of my personal favorite names), another Greek name. Leda means woman, but there's another meaning to it as well. "Happy". Hmmm...I wonder just who else has a name like that and can summon beasts and has the Crest of Timotheos? Nah, couldn't be anyone we know from Fire Emblem Three Houses.

Either way, more damning Hapi parallels aside, if you're a Greek Mythology nut like I am, Leda is best known for the story of Leda and the Swan, where the God Zeus came to her in swan form and impregnated her with Quadrupets(?) (omg the number four!), including Castor and Pollux, Clytemnestra, and Helen (later known as Helen of Troy).

Interlude 1: while our two girlies here have Greek names, Cai is more difficult to ascertain.

Cai is a rather difficult name to explain. It's another name that means happy and to rejoice. It could derive from Welsh origins but notably, it also has Greek-Roman origins if derived from the name Gaius. In Japanese, it could also mean "Ocean" or "shell", which could explain the blue colors. It could also reinforce his seemingly humble origins as well.

Interlude 2: I think it's a common theory that Dietrich is our Fódlan boy. The trailer seems to imply that he came from a ship (possibly seen in this picture).

Dietrich is our one non-Greek/Roman name as of yet. It is a German name, meaning Ruler of the People. And Lockpick. Everyone has pointed out all of the Mercedes and Emile (aka Jeritza aka The Death Knight) paralells, mostly the latter. The name Mercedes is Spanish/Latin meaning Mercies. Emile also has Latin origins, meaning industrious or rival (I should know this, my mom's name is the female equivalent to this), but also has Germanic origins, meaning to strive, or to excel.

Interlude 3: Why I personally rule out Dagda (for now) and think Morfis might be more likely.

I'm personally ruling out Dagda because the name itself has Irish influences. Our one character from there, Shamir, has a name of Hebrew origins (meaning Flint) and she doesn't match the aesthetics of this name. I'm also ruling out Albinea as well since in game, it's stated to be a cold region and we're not seeing that here.

Almyra seems to follow a mostly Turkish/Syrian/Middle Eastern naming scheme and I don't want to rule it out. Our characters here are named Khalid (Arabic: eternal, everlasting), Nader (Arabic: unique), and Shahid (Arabic: Witness; Persian: Beloved). All of these are Arabic in origin. There's also Cyril, which is Greek, meaning "Lordly".

1. Nabateans

Detail with biggest lore implications, even though it was shown in just the beginning and the end. The guy making the declaration as "Divine Sovereign" has his ears out, unlike the Nabateans of 3H who hide them post-Nabatean genocide. And the reason they hide them is almost certainly because they don't want to get clocked and experimented on (see: Flayn kidnapping)/killed to make more Relics.

In other words, whatever happened in the game's backstory, it's apparently safe for at least this one Divine Sovereign guy to walk around as openly Nabatean with his pointy ears. Massive lore implications there.

Sothis is also in her adult form; and if you remember, the reason why she appeared in child form in 3H is because she lost her memories after being killed by Nemesis. The fact she appears in her adult form here implies 1. either she didn't get killed or 2. her ghost self somehow regained her memories. Either way, also lots of lore implications.

Plus character design detail: the Divine Sovereign guy has blue eyes, unlike most Nabateans in 3H who all have curtains matching the window. And the only other Nabatean who has blue eyes is Sothis.

2. there are still Crests, Relics, and Demonic Beasts

As you can see in the gameplay. Cai and Dietrich have Crests of Elites, even. And if we assume they were made like in 3H (=kill Nabateans, drink their blood, make weapons out of their bones), it implies that at least some Nabateans still got killed like that here too.

And while there are regular giant monsters in the 3H works, Leda is shown controlling Demonic Beasts, which are specifically associated with Crests/Relics, and more specifically, human interactions with them. Interesting...

3. the factions and cultural/religious inspirations

We see that there are factions in the gameplay bits, but they're not the ones we know. Some color schemes are remniscient of 3H factions however, ex: Cai's faction being blue and both the logo and his clothes having Celtic knot motifs, invoking Faerghus.

Theodora's faction logo is yellow and appears to be Persian inspired? That winged lion + fire. And if we assume that the irl cultural motif counterpart factions from 3H carry over, she might have something to do with Almyra or the Almyra equivalent.

Dietrich has a black faction logo and he seems to be able to use dark magic. He even teleports, which is a very Agarthan thing in 3H (Agarthans or Agarthan associated characters are the only ones shown doing space shenanigans in the cutscene and/or having exclusive space abilities mechanics wise, like Shez). He's also very pale, palest one in the main four, wears armor that looks vaguely like Thales' armor. Might not be Agarthan but probably at least has Agarthan related backstory.

Leda is the hardest to tell; her faction logo is red but it doesn't look Adrestian as we know it, nor does her design invoke mainstream Adrestian designs we see in 3H. She might still be from the Empire/Empire equivalent, though; see number 6 for why.

As for the Divine Sovereign and presumably the Red Empire™ archetype of this game that's holding the competition: probably Adrestia or Adrestia equivalent, I think? Remember that before things went sour between Adrestia and Church in the recent few hundred years of 3H, Seiros and the Saints (Nabateans) helped found the Empire and whatnot, so Adrestia there already has the strongest claim to being the arbiters of the faith and successors of Saints/Nabateans (if they knew what Nabateans were); a similar country being ruled by an actual Nabatean isn't too much of a stretch.

Also one interesting thing to note is that from what we've seen in the trailer, the aesthetics are far less... west/north European. It's giving Byzantine including the Near Eastern/North African territories. Which, again, interesting given that Fódlan was "what if Stereotypical Fantasy Europe™ (so the north/western parts mostly) went isolationist for 1000 years." And idk what Cai's name is short for but Dietrich is the only one in the main four with a super Germanic sounding name, while Theodora and Leda are very Greek/Byzantine, matching the aesthetics shown.

For religion: the Divine Sovereign's name and his declaration at the start invoke faith. Meanwhile Theodora mentions having to protect her faith, implying that she might follow a different one. Also her design is obviously a Seiros homage, which has interesting implications regardless of whether Seiros as we knew her exists in this world.

Plus, considering the relationship between irl Christianity, Rome, and other regions/people that were under their rule (ex: Celts), interesting stuff about the spread of religions coming?

4. Adrestia and gladiators

I am brainrotten and lorepilled enough that as soon as I heard the whole arena gladiator thing, my mind immediately went to this doc in the Shadow Library. The one about the Adrestian emperor's wedding being celebrated with lavish feasts... and featuring northern gladiators being torn up by beasts as entertainment(!)

So, if the country holding the competition is Adrestia or the Adrestia equivalent of this verse: this might take place at a point where the Empire does nominally rule over the northern (3H world's Kingdom) and eastern (3H's Alliance) parts but they aren't fully culturally/religiously integrated yet. Cai talks about fighting to save his father too; maybe his dad got dragged off by the Imperial rulers for something idk

5. other interesting details

In 1:52, the woman Dietrich is fighting holds something that looks... like a gun???

In 1:54; Egyptian inspired cat mask?

6. the Japanese title

萬紫千紅, banshisenkou, is another Chinese expression like fuukasetsugetsu.

The kanji breaks down to: ten thousand (ban) purple and thousand (sen) red (kou). It's commonly used to refer to the sight of flowers in full bloom— and kou 紅 is the kanji used for crimson in Crimson Flower.

So, I'm willing to bet that this is almost certainly about Adrestian Empire at its peak (those 500? 600 years between end of War of Heroes and the First Mach War~Faerghan independence where they held hegemony over Fódlan) or another timeline/world/whatever with similar conditions.

On the one hand, good riddance. He was a bigot, a sexist, a racist, an outright Nazi, who acted as a mouthpiece for truly horrible people. I will not mourn him, and a part of me delights in the visceral poetic justice of the manner of his demise.

On the other hand, it is a normalization of political violence, it is a sign that the US is now firmly in it's "Years of Lead", and the worst is yet to come. A lot--a LOT--of people are going to die in tit-for-tat killings and other murders over the next several years.

And as part of that...

With the air of "I hope I'm wrong but I know that I'm going to be right and I hate it", I am starting a timer.

The start time is as follows: September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk shooting.

The end time will be as follows: [Someone murders a random, unaffiliated American Jew and cites Kirk as a motivation/inspiration]

I want that timer to never hit the end time of its run.

But we all know it won't. Jews are just too useful as scapegoats and easy targets across the entire political spectrum. And I cynically expect that end time bracket to be a month or less.

Does it bring me joy to predict the death of one of my own people? Fuck no. But I remember last year when that health insurance exec was shot... and then less than six months later, a Christian Israeli and his American Jewish girlfriend were gunned down by someone inspired by the the exec shooting.

And now...

My favorite Hubert supports and why I like them so much! Some possibly controversial opinions ahead! YOLO.

Hubert & Petra

I think the Hubert/Petra support chain is really underrated. There's a ton of Discourse about the Ingrid/Dedue support chain and racism and the overcoming thereof. But the Hubert and Petra support chain does a great job, I think, of showing someone working on their own racism. Hubert's behavior toward Petra in their C support is appalling, and I think Hubert's worst on-screen behavior. It's either the C support with Petra, or his threats toward her and Brigid on the Petra and Bernie paralogue in non-Crimson Flower routes.

The context is all-important. Petra is a political hostage. She was brought over to the Adrestian court at age 9. Hubert is an Adrestian noble. At the time of the C support pre-TS, Hubert is 20 and Petra is 15. The power dynamic between them is deeply skewed in Hubert's favor. He could do nearly anything to her short of kill her, and get away scot-free. It's pretty much Hubert's modus operandi to threaten people in C supports, because he's so paranoid about any potential enemy of Edelgard's. But to do so to someone who is already so utterly in his power, and Edelgard's, is just cruel.

The B support is still fairly bad. But in the A support, Hubert turns it around.

Hubert is now clear that he believes in the new accord between Brigid and the Empire. Indeed, it's obvious by implication, and more clearly spelled out in Hopes, that he was part of making that accord. And now he's stripped of his last excuse to keep judging Petra. I think one of the highest compliments Hubert can give is to say something like this:

Overall, I love this support as an example of a character working on their racist bullshit.

(I will briefly add that I adore their support chain in Three Hopes also. In that chain, it's Petra's turn to threaten Hubert, and he's SO INTO IT. Just like "Oh shit, a good threat. I respect that so much.")

Hubert & Dorothea

Talking of threatening people in C supports, you know who Hubert doesn't threaten in their C support? Dorothea.

Hubert just likes Dorothea right away. No threats. In fact he's quite open about his feelings about Edelgard right in the C support, and that's a very personal topic!

The whole support chain is about love. And it's even better because their ending together is platonic. And about being spies together, which is so sick. (As far as I can tell, and let the internet correct me if I'm wrong, Hubert is the male ("male") character with the most platonic endings with women, after Alois, who is already married.) I really love it because Hubert opens up very deeply to Dorothea about his feelings for Edelgard. As an aro-spec person, I really relate to the way Hubert and Dorothea talk about Hubert's feelings for Edelgard.

it's very lovely character growth for Dorothea because she sees how profound and transformative non-romantic love can be. That she doesn't need to have romantic love in her life to be happy, whatever society has told her about the necessity of marriage for women to be happy. And that's reflected in the fact that she has a platonic ending with Hubert.

I just can't find their A support anything but hilarious in the best way. They're talking about love, and superficially it's about them getting married, but they don't get married in their ending or have any romantic relationship, and the subtext is screaming that the A support is completely about both their feelings for Edelgard.

I'll take "very normal things to say when you're proposing to someone" for 500, Alex.

Hubert & Bernadetta

I have said it before and I will say it again: you can easily read a metaphor into this support about Bernie giving Hubert space to be gender non conforming or trans femme.

Bernie is way more scared of men than women, and behaves accordingly in their C support, but Hubert then expresses great gentleness toward Bernie and also a deep discomfort with this "scary vampire man" persona, which is sometimes useful but more often painful and heartbreaking. Bernie is really sweet and understanding about this, and even makes that flower in the A support, which you can interpret as Bernie saying "I see this side of you that doesn't fit into masculinity and I want to help you express it." After all, as Hubert says, it's a gift you'd give a female friend, or someone you have romantic feelings for.

What I really like about the moment where Bernie gives Hubert the flower is that it's a moment of Hubert being the one who needs support, through this feeling of pain and uncertainty about this frightening ghoul persona, and Bernie doing the caring. A lot of Bernie's supports are about people trying to help and support Bernie. And that's great! But I love that in this support chain, Bernie also gets to do the supporting.

That dynamic continues in their amazing paired ending, where Bernie goes on great adventures and Hubert stays at home and keeps house. Incredible. Iconic. Let Hubert be GNC. Let Hubert be a housewife.

Hubert & Ferdinand

Much has been said about this support, but I think I have a new take that I haven't seen before. Something that Hubert says to Ferdinand in Hopes helped me really unlock something important about their support chain in Houses.

In Hopes, Hubert and Ferdie are talking about Ludwig, and while Ferdie expresses hope that maybe his father can change, Hubert says something like, "Once someone strays from the path, they can never return." This reflects a broader aspect of Hubert's character, which is that he doesn't seem to believe in redemption. Not for nobles. Not for anyone who's done wrong. Especially not for himself.

Ferdinand does believe in redemption. Not only believes in it, but embodies it. Ferdinand has a remarkable redemption arc. Hubert in the C support with Ferdinand in Houses clearly believes that because of Ferdinand's really fucked up beliefs about nobility and about the power he deserves, Ferdie has strayed from the path and can never return. He's a lost cause. But then Ferdinand proves him wrong.

I think what a lot of fandom gets wrong about this relationship is that they think that Ferdie proved Hubert wrong because he was actually a good guy all along. That's not true. Ferdie pre-timeskip is in many ways genuinely toxic. He secretly believes that he should be Emperor. He bangs on about being the only legitimate heir of House Aegir, and his Aegir bloodline, all of this noble bloodline eugenics stuff that is ruining his classmates' lives. And in three out of four routes, he fights against Edelgard to preserve his noble power and prevent her taking it away from him, upholding this entire rotten system. But in Crimson Flower, he proves Hubert wrong, because he proves that people who stray from the path can return. That phrasing in Hopes about returning to the path gives me some feels, because in Judaism, the word for redemption, teshuvah, basically means "return." It's a belief in the goodness of people. You were on the path to start with. You left it, but you're returning. You're going back to your own fundamental goodness and ability to follow the path.

I think a big reason why Hubert is so impressed with Ferdie by the end of their support chain, and why he comes to love him, is because he proved to Hubert that people can change and can be redeemed. And if that's true of Ferdie…. then maybe that can also be true for Hubert. Ferdinand represents hope. Not just hope for a future after the war, with his visions of education for the masses, but hope that anyone, even the most spoiled noble, even a soul blackened by murder and moral compromise, can work toward redemption. I think it's really beautiful.

And then we get the A+ support which is just pure gay disaster tire fire. Absolute nightmares, both of them.

I find the Ferdibert paired ending deeply funny. Hubert thought he'd die in a ditch and be remembered as the Butcher of Fodlan or something, and now he's a Twin Jewel who everyone thinks is based. I'm also amused by the detail in the JP version of their ending where Edelgard is jealous of their romance. Poor Edie going "where's MY gay enemies to lovers slow burn, HUH?"

Hubert & Edelgard

Agggghhhhhkkkggghhkkkk so. Um. Finally. Last but not least. The Hubert and Edelgard support chain. This is my Hubert stan account origin story. This relationship is what made me go "I need to understand every last thing about Hubert von Vestra." Because here we have Hubert, who is leaving chloroform-soaked rags lying around, looming like a vampyr, cackling unhingedly in crit lines, and threatening people left and right in C supports, and then you see Hubert and Edelgard's C. And that's when you first get to see the real Hubert. That bright heart.

The direct JP-EN translation of this is "I shall make a show of spilling blood to paint the scarlet path1 you tread," where 'scarlet path' is a reference to the walkway in a theater, which is so sexy of Hubert to say.

I also love the C support because she's opening the door wide open for Hubert to leave. It shows the importance of consent and freedom in their relationship. All the people who talk about Hubert being "brainwashed" or "manipulated" into his role clearly left their brains at the door during this support.

I don't even know what to say about the B support, it's just the best. It's perfect. My heart is filled with rainbows. Nobody does it like them. Though I do love that at the end of the B support Edelgard's like "tell me ur secrets Hubert!!!" and he's like "OH LOOK AT THE TIME I GOTTA GO" and flees.

I can't talk about the A support without referring to the Teaspoon Translation because the EN is so badly botched. When I first saw their A support, I was disappointed. And then I discovered it was Treehouse at it again.

JP Edelgard would never dare assume that Hubert is heterosexual.

I also adore the JP version of their paired ending, from Teaspoon:

In their later years, after accomplishing what they set out to do, they found a talented successor and disappeared. Even in their retirement, spent just by themselves, there were likely no romantic exchanges even to the end.

This is something that I’ve usually never really felt comfortable doing. If you ever wonder why some artists are a bit more reluctant to actually *talk* about the “meaning” of their work, its because it strikes the same tenor as having to explain why a joke is funny.  If I have to actually lay it out for the viewer why certain decisions were made in the execution of a work of art, the magic of the whole experience may be lost.  Moreover, many artists avoid making definitive statements on their work because they do not wish to deprive viewers the opportunity to derive their own unique explanation. 

While I chiefly view myself as a fine artist, most of my artistic training was as an illustrator.  As an artist, this can lead to an interesting dichotomy when it comes to creating paintings.  During my studies, I was told that the job of an illustrator is to solve pictorial problems for people often by making pictures that tell a story or convey an idea.  Fine art’s definition, in contrast, tends to be more nebulous.  But I digress, on to the painting…

A number of people on reddit and Tumblr have remarked on the candle with the snuffed-out flame.  No interpretations on it have been offered, the mere presence of a candle with a smoldering wick is a strong enough implication.  However, this is one instance where I drew inspiration from art history so I believe it is worth elaborating on.  The animus for the candle originates in the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan Van Eyck.  Below is an image of the painting with the pertinent candle circled.

Art history scholars have a number of different readings about the candle’s presence, but the one I was taught in Art History is that the lit candle indicates the presence of the holy ghost or the watchful eye of God.  Three Houses draws from a number of religions for its world building, in the case of The Church of Serios, the developers took the majority of their cues from The Catholic Church.  If a lit candle would suggest Edelgard’s faith in the Goddess, then an extinguished one must imply Edelgard’s *loss* of faith. 

In addition to the extinguished candle, I would also like to direct viewers to the reflection of the candle in the polished wood table surface. In the reflection the candle is still burning very brightly, almost down to the base of the candelabra.

The purpose of this image is to recall a saying from old Taoism Philosophy in China: “The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long.”  Those who are familiar with Edelgard’s back story in Three Houses will find its relevance obvious.  I doubt I am the only one to make the allusion.

This brings me to the next major piece of symbolism I employed in the painting, the dagger and the drapery on the table.  The dagger’s significance should go without saying, but its application as a device will become more apparent after I explain the table cloth.  To put it succinctly, the majority of the dark shadow shapes made by the tablecloth are arranged to evoke the shape of the crest of flames.  Below is another visual to help illuminate this detail. 

The immediate implication here is the detail of Edelgard possessing the crest of flames.  As for why I decided to depict it in a more concealed way…When I first got the idea for this painting, the whole concept was that if a person saw this painting in a gallery, they would be looking at an actual artifact from Fodlan, one that created by an artist who actually lived there.  This is why the second row of the inscription reads “In the Imperial Year” on the left side and “1179” on the right.  This means the painting would have been completed just before Edelgard starts attending Gareg Mach, and long before the greater public would know she has the crest of flames.  How the artist came to know this would remain a mystery.  I like to imagine it as a detail that Fodlan’s historians would debate over for years after the game’s narrative.

There is also a second message that I have intended with the dagger’s placement cutting (heh) across the crest…Gripping the dagger over the crest of flames is a statement about what the path is that Edelgard will take, especially when the crest is examined as representing the Goddess Sothis.  In fact, there are two (technically three) lines of dialogue from Three Houses I had in mind for this symbolism.

They have absolutely no right to dictate how we defend ourselves, ever. In any way. Period, end of story. I’m trying so hard not to blanket distrust and dismiss every non Jew who talks about Palestine on any level, but it’s incredibly difficult.

They faked their “humanitarian concerns” and “love for human rights that compelled them to speak up” over going into this city, and we gave in. And because of that, six hostages were murdered. Not executed, killed, or just died. Murdered. In cold blood. For being Jews. By a genocidal, antisemitic terrorist group.
