my hot take is that fundamentally the concept of ashkenormativity is true, as a non-ashkenazi jew living in north america, the jewish life i live is underrepresented and misunderstood by the jewish majority.
AND that ashkenormativity has mostly been used as a weapon, predominantly by self-hating jews, to either delegitimize and poke fun at the rich and diverse ashkenazi culture and history — much of which was destroyed by the nazis — OR to frame mizrahi jews as the “real” jews indigenous to the levant and ashkenazim as some othered, embarassing version of judaism.
i work in jewish advocacy and education. i live my life as a sephardi jew who is constantly having to push for jewish leadership and organizations to adequately consider our experiences of the diaspora.
but i fundamentally understand that my identity as a sephardi/mizrahi jew is rooted in DIASPORA. and while the diaspora remains an important part of jewish identity and history, what defines my jewishness is belonging to the jewish peoplehood, encompassing ALL jews. when you frame my diasporic identity as the “real” judaism, or when you frame ashkenazim as privileged, or “white”, or fake jews, you only prove to me that 1) you don’t understand jewish identity, history or peoplehood, 2) you want to apply the oppressor v. oppressed dichotomy, rooted in the western lens of oppression and racism, to an innately non-western people and history, and 3) your intentions are not to advocate for the inclusion and uplifting of jews like me, but to marginalize ashkenazim and jews as a WHOLE by weaponizing sephardic and mizrahi jewry.
i, as a sephardi/mizrahi jew (i’m not completely comfortable with either term) know that we face challenges as a minority within a minority. we do undoubtedly face discrimination, i have both anecdotal evidence and research that demonstrates this to be true. the idea that ashkenazi identity and history often represents the whole of jewishness is TRUE, but this represents a very recent phenomenon in the history of our peoplehood.
and i fundamentally know our PEOPLEHOOD is the goal of advocacy and inclusion, not to uplift one kind of jew over another but to ensure we are ALL represented, diversely and equally, as one people.
does this make sense? these are half baked thoughts.
I'm not Jewish, though there is some joking about this between L-speakers and D-speakers among the Sioux. I do wish the thread where Mara Cohen talked about this very topic on Indianz.com was still around. (The message board is gone.)
@titans-thoughts would you be able to give a TLDR of what cohen wrote about it? curious to know more.

reblog to make prev stop having headaches
this is my one wild and precious life fucckkkkkkk fuckkkkkk fucckcckkkkkkk
Amethyst, Epidote – Las Vigas, Veracruz, Mexico
i see your “the fire fam has a betting pool about buddie getting together” (which don’t get me wrong i LOVE in fics). and i raise you “both b and c shift have a betting pool about buddie getting together because the fire fam is actually too chickenshit to poke buddie with a stick but b and c shift LOVE to talk shit about what a shift gets up to.”
and how we find this out is an episode is season 10 where the ENTIRE pov is from either b or c shift. and like it’s clear some of them have been on a shift at some point or another so they all have their own Opinions. but also!! a great way to explore the dynamics of the 118 beyond the core 4 and co. we hear their perspective of the core 4 and buddie too — like “they’re raising a CHILD together” “NOW ITS TWO KIDS” and even hot takes like “hen should’ve been a doctor i said what i said.” it would just be so fun!!!
and later on when buddie does get together it’s eventually figured out and announced like when shifts are switching and you see either b or c shift IMMEDIATELY react in the background, pulling out their phones to text the others or throwing their hands up because they lost the bet.
let me COOK. tim let me write your show.

S18E01 — Frank Marries A Corpse
i have nothing to add about the discourse around jews/israelis appropriating SWANA food because it happens every two months. so i will just eat falafel and make my kibbeh the way my grandma did and drool over knafeh and you can all eat glass about it <3
AND I WON'T CONFESS THAT I WAITED BUT I LET THE LAMP BURN AS THE MEN MASQUERADED I HOPED YOU'D RETURN WITH YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND TELL ME ALL THAT YOU'D LEARNED 'CAUSE LOVE'S NEVER LOST WHEN PERSPECTIVE IS EARNED AND YOU SAID YOU'D COME AND GET ME, BUT YOU WERE TWENTY-FIVE AND THE SHELF LIFE OF THOSE FANTASIES HAS EXPIRED LOST TO THE 'LOST BOYS' CHAPTER OF YOUR LIFE FORGIVE ME, PETER, PLEASE KNOW THAT I TRIED TO HOLD ON TO THE DAYS WHEN YOU WERE MINE BUT THE WOMAN WHO SITS BY THE WINDOW HAS TURNED OUT THE LIGHT
☕ Annie and britta from community, should have ended up together
OHHHHHHHHHH. yes. ok so im actually team frankie and britta, bit of a rarepair but it spoke to me during my community era.
BUT much like with troy n abed i do fear the characters that annie and britta had the best chemistry with were one another. (and frankie. but i totally get why she’s not a factor for most people. i also just have a massive crush on paget brewster.)

send me ☕️ + [topic] and i’ll tell you my opinion on it!
crazy that i’m jewish because every ancestor that came before me made the choice to live and breathe jewishly. even when it was scary or dangerous!! and now i have the privilege of waking up and choosing to do the same, knowing that every choice i make to live jewishly will reverberate for generations to come. crazy!!!!
