Go to this website!

Click the big blue "Generate Color Faded Text" button, and if you like the results, select and copy the HTML code!
While making your Tumblr post, click the GEAR icon in the upper right, go down to where it says "Text Editor" and choose "HTML"
Your tumblr post will go all HTML-y. Don't worry about it, just stick your cursor roughly where you want the colorful text and paste in the HTML code you got from the site. (One thing I do is write the text I want to color fade normally and then look for it in the body of my post and paste the HTML right over that!)
Switch back to "Rich Text" and Voila!
