graphic design is absolutely not my passion not even a little
It distinctly improves once The Alien shows up up but I'm feeling very cold on PHM so far. It reads like a marvel screenplay where people ALSO work out math problems sometimes
boobs are just fun to draw you know
I need to read Fire Upon the Deep im in such a multibody character mood rn and that that one seems fun + is a classic

Some thoughts on Nadder, bc i've been thinking about him today...
Quite old, over 1000 years
Was possibly once one of the greatest empresses whatever horrible continent this is has ever seen. It would make sense to me that the double body (two brains!) situation lent a certain potency to her psychic powers, perhaps in her youth she controlled one of the largest territories ever held by a single Lamia, a very formidable person
Non-Lamia people don't understand her situation and think of him as an odd.. uh strangely... touchy-feely.. brother-sister pair. Due to the gender dynamics with Lamia, "Asp" is often completely ignored, and Adder is seen as the main body, the true ruler, who people actually address or defer too.
Other Lamia can see how she thinks, and would understand that he's a single person, but are still confused and intrigued by him, mostly in the area of gender. The female component overrides the male, usually, in terms of how people conceptualize her. Is he half male-half female? or a female who was fused with her brother. Regardless, he's almost exclusively gendered female by the people who interact with him.
Her own feelings on this aren't very clear cut.
Her empire was toppled when Asp was kidnapped in a siege, something that functionally ripped his mind in half for as long as the two bodies were separated. Asp was eventually recovered, but the damage was pretty well done, and she's never really been the same.
Currently lives in a very old castle by the sea, and doesn't control any area greater than the surrounding village. His presence is mostly a historical curiosity, since his period of peak relevancy was at this point over 700 years ago, though I think his village is fond of him in the sort of oblique way you get with most haunted castles. They bring him food and gifts and like, and are quietly appreciated for it. Not particularly interested in drawing attention to herself.
His hair has always been white/silver, it isn't gone gray. These things age like dragons, which is to say unevenly. I do simply like the idea of her looking a little aged tho, it feels right. kind of worn
Nadder is an entirely nondiagetic nickname. Lamia communicate telepathically and don't use names for eachother at all, and non-Lamias just refer to him separately as Asp and Adder. The Nadder/"And Adder" pun would also be kind of dicey and flippant to say to her face lol
About those characters of yours (Asp, Adder, and Opaleye):
1: what are they
2: why do they look so huggable
3: why do I kind of want to be one
They're a species a friend made that have sort of become a collaborative thing through my excessive enthusiasm. We've been calling them Lamias
fat and with many arms
See my gut reaction is "me too man" but maybe not actually all things considered. Maybe for like a week.
tragically i kind of lost interest in art fight like a week before art fight
Asp and Adder (aka Nadder). Still working on his character + design, but she’s a single person who’s situation arose from a pair of stolen eggs (and the resulting hatchlings) being kept together for far too long, resulting in their minds fusing inseparably. Kind of a weird shut-in.
Opaleye. He’s cute

tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"
you can get a lot more mileage out of analyzing a truly abhorrent character through the lens of like. what sort of conditions would allow or even incentivize this kind of cruelty? what kind of person benefits from those conditions and how? over the more typical who hurt them type analysis. imo.
did normalnudes always suck this bad or did does my memory deceive me that it used to be useful for its intended purpose
recently I’ve been kind of obsessed with making ocs out of / turning ocs into a friend’s species
One of my most inane reoccuring notions i entertain is the idea of constructing a spec bio dichotymous key for some stupid little made up worm. Like imagine a tiny game where you're collecting these organisms but instead of just telling you what they are, you need to consult Literature about it. you need to squint at its little body count its little hairs and ridges and still probably get it wrong anyways. It wouldn't tell you if you're right or wrong. You just make your judgements and live with them.
the real question is if the game would involve casually killing the adorable and hilarious little worms I would concoct for it
more thoughts:
the art should be simple and cute, like a '90s/'00s edutainment game you'd get for pc
the worms themselves are also cute and relatively simple, but with a good number of characters to distinguish them
the worms are mostly but not entirely brightly colored, which is you'd think would make things easy but the coloration is the result of aposematism, and there are one or more overlapping mullerian mimicry rings to deal with
significant sexual dimoprhism or sexual phase changes making some species that given to easily being classified as one (or more) species
your key having errors in general
ldistinctiveness ranging from completely unmistakable to "you made it all the way to this couplet and im telling you theres like 13 things at least that look exactly like this"/cryptic species in general
non-morphological factors like time of year/day, weather, microbabitat, host plant or animal associations, etc...
Random stuff - divided between two segments, a point and click exploring segment where you look through a set of screens and collect the worms you find there, and the key section where you identify what you collected. The little overworld sprites for the worms would not always key out to the same things, so you wouldn’t be able to identify a lot of stuff without actually keying it.
Also ideas for worms + and some characters that may or may not be useful.
This is iNaturalist the videogame. If you enjoy doing this stuff, may I suggest helping people identify things on iNaturalist?
I use inat! What this is a videogame version of is just a real method of organism identitification, based on stuff I was doing for school + like to do for fun
