I don’t really know if it’s something that can properly be called a coincidence, but it wasn’t really fully intentional or something I set out to do. Picogryphs (and mouseworld as a setting in general), is very specifically made with the intent of being something that would have been catnip for my child self, ie. it is beastiariable setting focusing on a world of tiny people. Initially they were more outright little mouse gryphons, but I started playing around with phylogeny and spec evo for fun, since that kind of world building appeals to me in almost a puzzle box sort of way and I love making up weird organisms. But the design that resulted in wasn’t that compelling to me in the end, and ultimately the kind of vibe I want is more like, borrowers or gnomey (or like, fantastic planet,,, (those tiny people are not actually tiny but yk what I mean)) so I decided to try and make them a bit more human-faced while still keeping them compliant with the spec evo I’ve been doing, and I liked the effect of covering their mouthparts with a bulbous lip that looked a bit like a cartoony nose.

Dactylodonts are a primitive group of small, swift rhombopeds, the most basal of this lineage capable of truly running on sturdy, articulated oral and anal limbs. The bottom image depicts a courtship display, in which one hopeful dactylodont presents a male gametozoid to a prospective mate, its gift helpfully accentuated with a ring of dead leaves.
