A drabble I had watching ApolloTV's Winter Apocalypse Video. Characters mightttttt be OOC (I apologize if they are, I'm kinda figuring them out as I go)
Under the cut due to spoilers
Crunch.
Draaaaaaag. Crunch.
A small groan left his throat as he started to come to, pain leaving his mind hazy and body weak. Static filled his vision, making it hard to tell what the hell was happening.
Drag. Crunchch.
It was cold. That... made sense, he thought. There was snow everywhere. But, it also felt like he was moving. Not on his own accord - He couldn't move his body even if he wanted to - but more like... he was being pulled along...?
Crunch. Draag.
But... who was still around...? Ethan was dead. Lukas was... gone, he hoped. Frisk and Jei... they had left in the rocket. He saw the rocket leave, just before blacking out from the Storm's attack.
Unless...
His thoughts were cut off when his body was dragged over a rock, uncomfortably digging into his back before knocking into his head. A pained, static-filled yelp left him, and the person dragging him stopped.
"..." Some of the static in his head started to fade, letting him hear their soft puffs of breath. There was silence for a few moments, before they let out a grunt.
"You're heavy."
"...F̴͈̌r̷̯͠i̶̗̔sk?" he croaked, coughing a bit to clear the static in his throat. They grunted again in response, before continuing to drag him across the snow. "I t̴̯͊h̷̼͂o̶̜͛u̸̫̿ǵ̶̪h̴̡͂ẗ̵̳..."
"That I left?" Their voice was... hard to read. "No. There was only room for one in the ship."
"So J̷̙̍é̸̱i̴͓̚ is..."
"...Gone."
There is silence again, with the exception of their boots crunching in the snow and his body getting dragged behind them. He let them pull him along as his body was still too weak, stewing in his thoughts.
Eventually, they paused again. It felt like they were on a slope of sorts, the grip on leg growing a bit tighter as they started to brace down it. He almost slipped out of their hand twice, causing them to curse.
“Thor almighty, why are you so heavy-”
He made an offended noise at them, not dignifying it with a proper response. They grunted, continuing to carefully maneuver down the slope with him, before he suddenly felt something surprising - Warmth.
It was weak, but still very welcomed, especially by his frozen body. His foot was dropped to the floor, Frisk's footsteps moving away from him. He could hear the crackle of the fire, slowly warming his body and mechanics. As it began to melt the ice and snow coating him, the static seemed to fade from view, giving him back his sight.
He could make out the shape of Frisk across from him, their shadow stretched behind them across the cave wall. They looked mostly the same - Their horns curled around their ears, their mask pulled up over their mouth, their clothes still covered in thick fur. But their spirit... their eyes... it seemed so dull now, compared to before. Tired and defeated, with bags and frostbitten skin underneath them.
"H̷͍͒o̵̹͘w̵̗͋.̴̢̇.̷̺͆.̸̯͆" He paused, coughing weakly. "How... l̷o̸n̶g̸... has it been?"
"..." Frisk rested their head on their knees, hugging them to their chest. "A while. Hard to tell. The snow has gotten too thick for me to tell the days apart."
He winced, turning his head to the fire. "Why... did you come back for me?"
Frisk closed their eyes, head drooping further. For a moment, he wondered if they had fallen asleep-
"You're the only one left now."
His antennas reached for them, as he struggled to lift his head and look at them. They didn't seem to notice, so he gave a confused hum, drawing their attention. Their eyes opened again, their gaze seemingly even duller than before as they met his screen.
"Everyone's gone now," Frisk said, voice as bitter and cold as the wasteland around them. "Ethan is dead. Lukas is dead. My parents are dead. Jei is... gone. The Storm is out there, still destroying the whole dead world... I don't have anyone now. Only you."
They spit the word out, glaring at him through the fire. He stared back, unable to flinch away from their accusatory gaze.
"You were the one who caused this. You killed Odin and the whole world went to shit. People died because of you. So many people - People with friends, with families, with lives are all gone. My village, my home, my family is all gone, thanks to you!" Their voice rose with their growing anger, hands clenching and teeth gritting. "I know you're trying to make up for it. I know you tried to save Jei and me because you felt bad, guilty for what you did. But it doesn't change the fact that you're here, and they... aren't."
Their voice cracked near the end, eyes squeezing shut as their nose scrunched up. Shaking and shivering, crystals forming in their eyelids as they buried their face back in their knees.
"It's not fair," they whispered, voice muffled by their fur and leather. "It's not fair..."
Apollo did nothing, could do nothing, as Frisk began to sob into their knees, fingers digging into their arms as the held themselves. All he had the strength to do was watch, as the blizzard raged on outside, as the fire crackled between them, weakly projecting their shadows on the wall...
~~~~ (Extra bit I didn't quite know how to connect to above)
Frisk was asleep now, head resting on their arms, flat on their stomach. They had their head turned away from him, so it was hard to tell if they were actually sleeping or not... He'd rather not risk waking them up regardless.
Silently, he tried to twitch his fingers, trying to regain control over his body. He winced at the stiffness, but was surprised enough at seeing his fingers curl inward, clenching them into a fist. He tested it further, trying to bend his arm, internally groaning as he felt static hiss at him for his attempt.
"Owowow," he hissed, forcing himself to continue his movement. Eventually, he was able to get it to move without too much feedback, and worked on the rest of his limbs, silently groaning and internally screaming at the painful stiffness of them all. Seemed like even with the fire helping, it still wasn't enough to completely melt all the ice that had frozen his circuitry.
After regaining some feeling in his legs, he got to his feet, wobbling. His wings were thankfully tucked away for now - He would have easily lost balance if they weren't. He took a few steps forward, hand on the wall, digging his feet into the cold stone floor as he moved.
Satisfied with his tests, he turned to look at Frisk again. They had seemingly not stirred at all, despite all his noises and creaking as stretched his limbs.
Good. That was good.
Slowly, he shuffled toward their side, trying to keep his steps light and quiet. His body ached in protest, but he ignored it, pushing through. He braced himself against the wall, sliding down to sit near their head. He faced the fire, watching the flames for a few moments as he contemplated his words.
"I̶ ̸k̴n̸o̵w̶..." He gave a frustrated sigh hearing the static in his voice, yanking at his antenna and adjusting it. He continued, the static finally fading from his voice. "I know apologizing won't mean anything. Saying 'sorry' won't fix anything. So I won't say that. Instead..."
He paused, glancing at them. Their head was still facing the wall, their body rising and falling with every breath. Still asleep, for the most part.
"...Instead, I'll make you a promise. An oath - That so long as I am around, I won't let you be alone." His voice was soft yet firm, as he spoke his vow. "Even if I'm not always going to be the best company, even if you hate me for what I've done, I won't abandon you to wander this frozen hell."
"..."
He hummed, nodding at their silence as he turned back to face the fires. Whether they heard or not, he didn't know, nor did it really matter. He made his vow, and he was going to stick with it.
It was the least he could do, after what he's done.
"If you kill enough people surely peace is inevitable."
Ros a lot to unpack with that sentence but why would you say that to Badboyhalo of all people? 😭
Ros and Bad's conversations are so funny because sometimes Bad gives Ros really solid and sweet advice but most of the time he goes "I don't know, maybe try murder?" Like he's genuinely trying his best to help Ros but if he doesn't know what to do he will just suggest killing someone and hoping it works out. I guess that's what you get when you go to the local demon for life advice.
Hey, since at the end of Bad's stream someone brought up that the Arkanis Halloween event was deleted, I decided to publish all of Bad's VODs I have been saving for over a year (yes including the Arkanis event)
I'm keeping these so they don't get lost to the wind
This is the link to all of them in order since I didn't upload them all in order
All of Bad's Realm VODs saved for sake of no lost media
And this is a link to all the Realm VODs in order
I have been doing this simply because I hate lost media but have never published them because I didn't want to step on Bad's toes, but he gave the go-ahead to upload them all so I went ahead with it. Enjoy!
Scott: "Cause like - the amount of drama, and alliances, and then flirting - um, that's mainly Foolish and Bad, though. I think it's flirting. I think, it's flirting in the same way that like, loathing from wicked, is flirting like there's definitely some gay undertones there, but..."
As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse. It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search terms
As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable. As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.
Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.
⁂
Google is so powerful that it “hides” other search systems from us. We just don’t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to expanding other people’s knowledge on this topic. Information literacy is a huge topic in high schools and universities, and one of the things teachers and librarians are struggling to help students understand is the fact that their search engine is not free of bias and may prioritize ads (or what it thinks you want to see based on your shopping experience) rather than actual information. It’s made more difficult by the fact that the technology in use is constantly evolving.
Also, big thanks to the folks who reminded me to fix the ref links in the original post. Not sure what I was thinking when I copied it over from FB, but it’s now fixed (can’t vouch for reblogs, this is Tumblr afterall).
Someone accurately noted that the bulk of the above links are databases, not search engines. The initial post called them research sites not search engines. If you want something better than Google, I would usually suggest using Duck Duck Go. Someone in the comments said it skews right, but I have not seen research or evidence to back that up, so proceed as you wish. I would recommend Firefox as a browser, and you could consider one of these search engines.
https://www.qwant.com/ - Search engine with no tracking or advertising
https://www.ecosia.org/ - Search engine that plants trees – has ads and that ad revenue runs the engine while funding tree planting
Additional Sites Recommended in the Comments
Here are some of the top sites recommended in the comments.
Academic/Reseach
Academia - platform that shares academic research
arXiv - (pronounced archive, apparently) is a free distribution service and an open-access archive for 2,328,899 scholarly articles in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. It is housed by Cornell University
Astrophysics Data System - The SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) is a digital library portal for researchers in astronomy and physics, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) under a NASA grant. The ADS maintains three bibliographic collections containing more than 15 million records covering publications in astronomy and astrophysics, physics, and general science.
Bielefeld Academic Search Engine - BASE is a search engine specifically for academic studies texts, and contains more than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free.
Bioline - This is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
Education Resources Information Center - ERIC is a comprehensive, easy-to-use, searchable, internet-based bibliographic and full-text database of education research and information.
JSTOR - academic digital library providing access to more than 12 million journal articles, books, images and primary sources in 75 disciplines.
PubMed - the National Institute for Health’s National Library of Medicine, comprises more than 35 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Citations may include links to full text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites.
Research Gate - founded to address the problems in the way science is created and shared. Connects the world of science and makes research open to all.
Research Papers in Economics - Volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science for RePEc.
Sci-Hub - research publication library – technically pirated content, but please note that the researchers do not get paid for publication, and will often send you a PDF of their research for free if you ask, it’s the publications that want to restrict access to paying readers
US Government Science Portal - Science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
World Cat - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where the rare book you need is.
Libraries
Boston Library History & Political Science - The Boston Library has a ton of history and poli sci resources. Big libraries often have things available digitally for free, even if you aren’t in the area.
Hathi Trust Digital Library – This library provides free digitized books from all over the world.
Internet Archive - This non-profit library houses millions of free digital books, movies, software, music, websites, and more.
PDF Drive - This is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format, claiming over 225 million names. Caution advised as some users report malware may be hidden in with the valid content.
Project Gutenberg - This site provides free downloads of digital books, focusing on works with expired US copyright. Note, if you look for out-of-print books on Google, it will try to sell you books that you can actually download free from Gutenberg (I’ve tested this multiple times).
Z Library – This digital library provides ebooks for free. Currently considered a security risk by Firefox, so maybe avoid.
