The Clone Wars Heresies Project

For the first time in months, I’m back to working on the project, bay-by!!!!! I blame postpartum depression, autistic burnout, and just plan old job burnout for my extended hiatus.

So, these past couple of weeks have really been something. I had a death in the family, my kids got ear infections, I went back to work after mar leave—and on top of that, my youngest has had a sleep regression. Suffice it to say, I haven’t really felt like working on the project these past few weeks. This little tidbit I’m sharing here is just a way of reminding myself that a hiatus doesn’t mean I’m finished.

In honor of Maul: Shadow Lord, I thought I’d share what I have so far for the Maul and Savage chapter:

Chapter X: We Shall Start with Revenge - Maul & Savage

For every light that’s lit in the Star Wars mythos—the Jedi Order, the Republic, our heroes—there’s a shadow cast as well. From the light of the Jedi, we get the Sith. Out of the dying Republic is birthed the Empire. And characters like Yoda, who serve as heroes in the Skywalker Saga as a whole as well as the Clone Wars, are undergirded by Dooku and Sidious.

Obi-Wan, the consummate Jedi and one of the leading heroes of the Clone Wars, is no exception to this rule. For all of his noble traits—his steadfastness, his faith, his patience—there is lurking within the narrative a piece of Obi-Wan that these traits keep from coming to light. With Satine, we’ve seen how Obi-WAN’s dedication to the Order above all else at times blinds him to the softer, feminine sides of his psyche—his anima—and prevents him from fully recognizing or acknowledging Anakin’s capacity for possessive love. Likewise, in the Decpetion arc, we saw how Obi-WAN’s faith in the Jedi Order casts the shadow archetype of the Pragmatist, in which he is willing to do whatever needs to be done in service of the Republic. And now, in the following chapter, we’ll see how Maul and his brother Savage are a shadow and foil of Obi-WAN’s serenity and his brotherhood with Anakin, a dark mirror which shows us what’s perhaps lurking below the surface of the Jedi Master’s psyche and in his fated relationship with his one-time padawan.

My entire family has been knocked out by The Ick, so I haven’t been working much on this project lately. I do have a bit of the part two intro chapter outline finished, though:

Part Two: The Underworld

“We must go to the lower levels. The Underworld.”

So voices the venerable Jedi Master Plo Koon as he and Ahsoka prepare to descend into the lower levels of Coruscant, fittingly dubbed  The Underworld,” in the Clone Wars season two finale, Lethal Trackdown. As its name implies, it is some distance below the pristine upper levels of Coruscant we are accustomed to seeing, but it is much more than that. It is the underbelly of regular society, where crime and all manner of seedy businesses thrive, seemingly right below the Jedi’s proverbial noses. And like the underworld of mythology—where we find Odysseus descend in the Odyssey, where the goddess Innana makes her infamous descent to her confront her sister—the Coruscant underworld is where Ahsoka will be challenged and tested before she re-merges during the episode, reborn and renewed.

This, of course, is not the only time Star Wars employs the symbolism of an Underworld. As Mary Henderson asserts in the Magic of Myth, the heroes of Star Wars have been descending to and ascending from the underworld ever since the Original Star Wars trilogy—the Death Star and the trash compactor, Dagobah and the cave, Cloud City, and the countless other time Luke, Leia, and Han must make downward journeys. This theme continues into the Prequel Trilogy with scenes such as Obi-Wan dangling above an abyss as Darth Maul taunts him from above, and Anakin journeying to rescue his mother only for her to die in his arms shortly after their reunion. And perhaps most famously of all, Anakin and Obi-Wan duel on Mustafar, after which Anakin will spend the remainder of his life trapped in his own personal underworld—his iconic, but undeniably coffin-like life support suit.

With the Clone Wars drawing from the symbology of Star Wars as a whole, it should come as no surprise that the show also draws heavily on the theme of the underworld, particularly as the show “grew with its audience” and began to offer darker fare. PLO Moon’s and Ahsoka’s scenes in the Coruscant Underworld are one (quite apparent) example. So is the slew of episodes featuring criminal syndicates in seasons three and four (more on that in chapters X and Y). But there are also moments in the show in which the Underworld symbolism is less on-the-nose, with the Underworld theme being communicated by imagery and story beats rather than run-ins with not-so-subtly-named locations and organized crime.

In order to understand how the Clone Wars continually employs the theme of the Underworld, it is important to first familiarize ourselves with myths and symbols associated with the Underworld in mythology, as well as in the Star Wars mythos itself. Most often, the Underworld is a kind of netherworld or realm of the dead, usually ruled over by a deity—Erishkegel in Sumerian myth, Hades in Greek mythology, Pluto in Roman, etc. Not necessarily synonymous with the modern Western Christian concept of Hell as a place of eternal, conscious torment, the Underworld was most often simply a place where the dead were contained after leaving the mortal realm. Some departed to other dwelling places based on their deeds in life—the fields of Elysium in certain Ancient Greek sects, for example—while some, like in the myths of Ancient Mesopotamia, simply dwelled there for eternity. 

There are a few in the Underworld, however, who are not sent there by fate, as Hector declares before departing for war in the Iliad, who journey into it deliberately. In Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey/Adventure, this intentional descent into the Underworld, known as Katabasis, is usually embarked upon to gain some item, some elixir, such as when Odysseus descends into Hades to seek guidance from the blind seer Teiresias. And since what goes down must come up again (at least if they want to accomplish their task), the descent is followed by a return to the mortal realm—an ascent fittingly dubbed “anabasis,” or “going up.” Thus, a cycle is created of descent and ascent, a symbol of the life-death-life cycle that not only literally governs nature, but which we can see unfolding in our own psychology. We are continually reaching our lowest points, unmaking ourselves, or simply examining parts of our lives that we usually do not wish to see, only to re-emerge from this painful process transformed. We aren’t perfect by any means—we can’t simply have a single “eureka” moment where we discover the panacea for all of our problems—but does take us one step, one journey closer to becoming healthier, better-adjusted human beings.

In most mythology or fiction, the Katabasis and Anabasis are associated with descent into some lower realm, such as a cave (a-La the Odyssey), crater, chasm, or other entrance below ground. Bodies of waters like rivers and seas, “between world” animals such as snakes, baptism and other similar religious rites, and even yonic imagery—vulvas, vsginas, and wombs—are also closely linked to the Underworld, with the latter being frequently employed in the form of vagina-like caves and tree hollows in the Last Jedi. There is also the infamous “love confession” scene in Attack of the Clones when Anakin and Padme confess their love before the not-so-subtly yonic entrance into the Geonosis Arena, where they will undergo Katabasis in the First Battle of Geonosis and Anabasis when they return from the battle and secretly wed on Naboo.

In the Mortis trilogy specifically, there are numerous instance in which the characters descend and ascend—both literally and symbolically…….

I didn’t realize until my latest rewatch that the Father of the Mortis gods wears a caduceus. For those who aren’t familiar with the caduceus (like me until this week), here’s what Wikipedia had to say about its symbolism:

Per my usual posts, I’m continuining to hack away at the outlines for each chapter/installment of The Clone Wars Heresies. I’ve finished an outline for the preface and introduction, so I’m moving on to the overview chapters for each section. Right now, I’m thinking of having three parts (Star Wars works well in threes), with the first part focusing on the political/historical contexts and introducing archetypes, the second spotlighting the theme of the Underworld, and the third and final part focusing on death and rebirth (Victory and Death). The following is my outline for Part One:

Part One: Begun the Clone Wars Have

“Begun the Clone Wars have,” is the final, fatal line of Attack of Clones, which depicts the beginning of said war. To the audience, this references all the way back to the infamous moment in the very first Star Wars when Luke Skywalker asks old Ben Kenobi, with a hint of incredulity, “you fought in the Clone Wars?” And indeed, the Clone Wars have always been part of the story of Star Wars, even beyond this simple throw-away line in A New Hope. Wanting to make a commentary on current political events and informed by a study of both history and anthropology, George Lucas’s earliest “backstory” for his new universe had always included the Clone Wars as the driving force (pun not intended) of the Emperor’s rise to power. To quote Lucas, the events of the Clone Wars, a mystery until 2002’s Attack of the Clones, were what caused the waning democracy of the Galactic to “be given away.”

As we and the character begin our journey into the Clone Wars, it is important to first understand the historical and political events that Lucas is commenting on in the Clone Wars. The first, which was intended from when Lucas began penning his first Star Wars script in the seventies, is the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon—the latter of whom was the infamous direct inspiration for Palpatine. The other, which was not incorporated into Star Wars until Revenge of the Sith, was the War on Terror.

Although he included nods to politicians in the Prequels—Nute Gunray being a reference to Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan being the most notable—Lucas had the opportunity to expand on these references and make further commentary on current politics. The characters, events, and organizations discussed in this work and in Part One in particular—the Jedi, the Second Battle of Geonosis, the Council of Neutral Systems, etc.—will continually comment on critique the Vietnam War, the War on Terror, capitalism and neoliberalism, settler colonialism, and the rise and fall of authoritarianism and militarism.

With this lenses of political critique in mind for the Part One and this work as a whole, it becomes apparent that the themes, archetypes, and even film allusions work toward this goal of political-historical criticism and commentary.

At the level of the Mortis trilogy, the Son as an archetype symbolizes the growing chaos, the desire for power and control, and selfishness echoed by the characters and events of the Clone Wars. The Father and Daughter, in contrast, represent the actors who attempt to counteract the pervasive imbalance cause by the Clone Wars—the Jedi, the clones, politicians, and others—with varying levels of success. They can be further separated into aggressive archetypes such as pragmatist (represented by the Father) and the more passive archetypes of maiden and damsel (represented by the Daughter), as well as archetypes of masculinity (animus) and feminist (anima).

At the level of individual arcs, episodes, and characters, Lucas’s political and historical commentary is apparent in the allusions to specific events—the French Resistance being a cited as an inspiration for the Ryloth arc, for example—and historical figures, such as the before-mentioned Palpatine/Nixon allusion and the lesser known example of General George Douglas McArthur as the inspiration for Pong Krell (see Chapter X).

As we, and the characters in the narrative, prepare to embark on our journey into the Clone Wars, we should keep our eyes open to the lessons Lucas will have for us—not only about politics and war, but about our human nature as well….

I’ve now nearly finished my rough outline for the series as a whole, and the logical next step has been flesh out my preface, where I discuss the “Why” of this work, and my introduction, which uses the Mortis Trilogy as a way of u derstanding the meta-narrative of the Clone Wars and the Skywalker Saga (at least the first six films) as a whole. I’ve obviously not finished either the preface or intro—you’ll see that I haven’t even started talking about Son or Daughter yet—but I thought this would give a nice taste of what to expect from my project.

Preface - Why this?

Believe it or not, there was a time when there was a since that Star Wars on-screen was over…

Today, we’re inundated with Star Wars films and TV shows, but in the 2005-2008, this wasn’t the case until the Clone Wars was announced.

This sparked a Prequel Renaissance that was alive at the time of the Star Wars Heresies book, but which truly peaked in the mid-2010s

Discuss the nostalgia for the Clone Wars era (clone wars references and glup shittos are in EVERYTHING Disney Star Wars) and my own experience of the Clone Wars

However, even with this sudden uptick in Prequel era appreciation and nostalgia, there remains a lack of serious criticism of the Clone Wars as a body of work

Just as was the case when the Star Wars Heresies were written, criticism as a knee-jerk, emotional response—rather than a studied and refined approach—is the main reaction of fans. “Is this canon?” “This ruined my childhood!” “This is woke!

A more thoughtful and literate approach is needed to not only combat the growing tide of low-brow critiques from (predominantly) male Star Wars personalities, but to slow down in and reflect on the mythopoeia Lucas left us with—a radical act in a Post-Disney world that urges us to always be in anticipation of the next franchise “product.”

Discuss how other Star Wars online personalities have done this to a degree—podcasts such as What the Force, Skytalkers, and The Wampa’s Lair—but have not focused exclusively on the Clone Wars

Introduction - Mortis

If understanding the nature of the Force is necessary for understanding Star Wars, then the Mortis trilogy—a three-episode set in the middle of Clone Wars season three—might possibly be one of the richest sources of Force mythopoeia to be found in not only the Clone Wars, but all of Star Wars as an existing body of work…

Lucas intended Mortis to show—rather than tell—audiences how the Force works. Which is not to say that Mortis should simply be viewed as a “lore dump” episode—although some certainly see it that way—but that it should be recognized as a kind of meta-narrative of the Force at large, an over-arching structure that undergirds how the ineffable energy field old Ben Kenobi described in A New Hope “binds us together.” Therefore, it is the perfect starting point for us to reflect before we embark on our analysis of the Clone Wars.

One way in which Mortis functions to show as the “big picture” of the Force and mythic elements of Star Wars is that it introduces us to several archetypes of that echo both individual characters, including our Big Three, as well as the aspects of the Force itself. 

On the most apparent level of analysis, the Father functions as a archetype of the Force—namely, the “balance, the tension” holding the light. This is the role he quite literally plays in maintaining harmony between his two children, Son (avatar of the dark side) and Daughter (avatar of the light), and which he wishes Anakin to take up once he dies, an event implied to be imminent. The Father at this level of analysis, then, is the actor—or “force”—ensuring that seemingly opposed energies such as creation and destruction continue their eternal dance of harmony.

While I’m working on fleshing out the outlines and sources for each chapter, I thought I’d share the rough outlines for my first two Obitine chapters (yes, there are multiple) since they don’t get enough love:

After sleeping on it, I realized my original plan of doing a part for different characters or factions was WAY too convoluted, so I decided to reorganize into three parts following characters that fit with the overarching theme of each part. Most of the characters will be covered multiple times, but as you can see, some are covered less extensively than others. I’ll worry about the exact ordering the chapters at a later point; for now, I’m going to focus on putting some rough ideas/themes for each character and compiling sources.
