story about a gaeltacht vampire who is worried about rural depopulation because it reduces access to blood but flat out refuses to move to a city so is setting up summer courses to lure in the learners and tourists
when english speakers move to the village he gives them like. a month or two to get started on their irish and if they don't, he eats them
they have the best roads in the region and it's because he keeps applying for grants and shit to keep the village afloat. he's great at grant applications. roadsigns though not so much. he likes it when a few of the tourists get lost
he's actually really supportive of the learners on the summer course. he's really good at teaching grammar in a way that's compelling and helpful. people come back year after year and bring their friends, which is, obviously, precisely what he was aiming for
obviously all the locals know he's a vampire and they talk about it all the time when he's not listening. they're just not gonna do anything to make him leave when he's bringing in that sweet sweet cash. plus he does have lovely irish and he's great fun at a session. never sings before midnight but once he does, nobody's leaving until the pub closes
he always teaches "haigh" or just straight in with a "caidé mar atÔ tú" as greetings. the strength's mostly gone out of your classic "Dia duit" these days but you never know when you're gonna get a proper believer in class and it makes him itchy. he tells them it's needlessly formal and they sound weird and it's mostly fine but sometimes he does need to go and have a bit of a lie down about it
Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!?Ā Libraries literally saved my life as a child!
Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!
I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)Ā
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!
As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)
New books in LARGE PRINT! Iām visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!
Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.
Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they donāt have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.
Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.
I love the library āŗ
The library was one of my favorite places to go as a kid and I still live to go and just. Sit and read. Or do homework. The university Iām at has a massive 8-story one I love to just wonder around in~ Great places
Libraries are amazing places, we need to protect them to ensure their continued existence.
I used to wander about the fiction section in my local library, and choose books with the most interesting titles - I discovered two amazing authors that way
If you feel disconnected from your local community & want to find ways to get involved, seriously consider spending some time at the library. Go to some events! Organize a reading group!
Support your libraries!
Read banned books!
People who donāt learn can be more easily controlled and told what to think!

Sometimes when you clean your wip folder you find something you made years ago in a way to deal with and at the same time educate others on something very dear to you that's been stolen by people who see stealing it as "doing you a service"
Made this last year during Seachtain na Gaeilge
Anyway. Seeing this again made me think maybe it was alright, actually

[ID: Digital art on a mid-tone grey background. The art features four maps of Ireland in a 2 by 2 formation. The first map is white and labelled ā1800ā, the second is red and labelled ā1850ā, the third is white and labelled ā1926ā, and the fourth is also white and labelled ā2022ā. The maps only show land where Irish is predominantly spoken, highlighting the decline in the use of Irish over the years, to the point where the 2022 map is completely unrecognisable as a map of Ireland, just looking like a few tiny scattered islands. There is white text above and below the maps. The text reads, in all capitals āIf it wasnāt for us / youād be speaking Germanā. /End ID]

thoughts on doctor who?
Is that another Tumblr imaginary movie?
No, that's Dr. Gorv. Dr. Who is a movie about the russian Bolshevik revolution starring Julie Christie and Omar Sharif
No, youāre thinking of Doctor Zhivago. Dr Who is a satirical comedy movie about the Cold War and nuclear destruction.
That's actually Doctor Strangelove. Doctor Who wrote a bunch of children's books to help kids learn to read.
No, that's almost definitely Doctor Seuss. Doctor Who was a song by the Thompson Twins.
You're thinking of Doctor! Doctor! Neil. Doctor Who is about a brilliant but arrogant surgeon who, following a car crash that eliminates his chance of ever doing surgery again, turns to mysticism.
Close! Thatās Doctor Strange. Doctor Who is the Dutch expert in law, philosophy, science, and metaphysics who, along with a solicitor, a train fiend, an administrator of an insane asylum, a nobleman, and a cowboy, hunts down and kills a notorious vampire.
bzzt! i'm sorry, dr van helsing is not the titular character of the novel Dracula, but thank you for playing.
anyway Doctor Who is a veterinarian who can speak to animals. it's a long series of novels which people have attempted to translate into the film format without... notable success.
Sorry, but thatās Dr. Doolittle. Dr. Who had an island in the Pacific Ocean, where he conducted highly unethical experiments on animals.
nah mate thatād be dr moreau. i reckon dr who might have been the titular villain from that sean connery bond movie, with the fucked up hands.
That's Dr No. Isn't Doctor Who the fictional medical drama within Supernatural?
No, thatās Dr. Sexy, M.D. Doctor Who is the author of the Lensman series.
No, no, youāre thinking ofĀ American author E. E. "Doc" Smith. Dr. Who is the name of that sex therapist and media personality.Ā
Mmmm I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Dr. Ruth Westeimer. Dr. Who is a bald evil mastermind hellbent on destroying Austin Powers.

Respectfully, Ireland is the best country on the planet
from the same thread:
I love Ireland
Oh no
It's true
It is like something out of Douglas Adams. And yet it is actually happening.

I just think it would be really neat if every single one of those fuckstains on the Supreme Court suddenly came down with bubonic plague
Respectfully, I donāt think youāve given your tags enough consideration:
If history has taught us anything, itās that a US Supreme Court Justice is a threat as long as they draw breathā nothingĀ forces them out.Ā So the space virus needs to be painful, fatal, and quick
Youāre absolutely correct and I apologise for the oversight. Iād also like to clarify that, on reflection, bubonic plague wouldnāt work, as we have antibiotic treatments available now. Therefore, Iād like to suggest that they all be thrown into one of the Yellowstone hot springs.
As a side benefit, that may the sort of sacrifice that the Yellowstone Caldera ās volcano god needs to finally erupt again and bring on a global apocalyptic event, which is daily sounding more and more appealing.
GOD, please.

Adorable
Hereās the opposite story, though. With apologies because I donāt have the book in front of me, so I may get some details wrong, but I read this āIrenaās Childrenā by Tilar J. Mazzeo.
Irena lived in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation, and dedicated her life to rescuing Jewish children from the Ghetto, and her story is complicated in a lot of ways but - well, this story isnāt actually about Irena, per se.
Itās about a bus driver.
Itās about a day when sheās traveling across town by bus with a very young Jewish child, and partway to their destination the child looks up and asks a question - in Yiddish. and the whole bus goes quiet, because everyone knows what that means. And Irena thinks, okay, weāre going to die here today.
And sheās running through her options - all of them bad - and suddenly the bus stops, and the bus driver announces that thereās been a mechanical failure and the bus needs to return to the depot immediately. Everyone off, please.
And she stands and goes to get off the bus and the driver says - not you two. Sit down. So she sits down as everyone else leaves, because, well, what else is she going to do? the options are all still bad, at this point.
and when the bus is empty the bus driver says,
āWhere do you need to go?ā
And then he drives them as close to their destination as he can, and lets them off, and drives away. And Irena lives, and the kid lives, and they never cross paths again.
So a janitor got three people killed, and a bus driver saved two lives - not to mention all the other lives indirectly saved because Irena was able to continue her work.
I think about that almost every day now, to be honest.
We canāt all be Irena. I couldnāt be Irena. She was in a unique place with very specific skills and connections that let her do what she did. I am just one mentally ill librarian. I canāt be her. But - I can be the bus driver. Or I could be the janitor. Because it doesnāt matter what your job is. It doesnāt matter who you are. In a world like this, every single one of us has the opportunity to do massive harm or massive good. We can save lives or end them.
And thatās scary. but itās also very comforting? at least for me. Because at the end of the day it means this: no matter of how small and helpless and unimportant you feel, youāre never powerless in the face of great evil.
You can choose to be the bus driver.
