When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".

When the boat is still being built, your say "it".

When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".

When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".

When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.

If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").

If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")

If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").

If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.

If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.

Therefore I posit: having a missing person declared dead in the Shire requires the consent of their next of kin. Whoever Bilbo’s next of kin was at the time of the Hobbit (possibly Otho? I’m not sure) had him declared dead at the first opportunity but Frodo refused to ever do it.

Frodo had anxious hobbit bureaucrats knocking on his door every couple of years like ‘Mr Baggins… blease… it’s been 10 years… he was eleventy-one… can we fill out his death certificate yet’ and Frodo was like ‘absolutely not’.

After all, last time they declared Bilbo Baggins dead— which involved filling out all the paperwork necessary to declare somebody dead without a body— he had the rudeness to show up again, forcing them to do a lot more paperwork, and this time with an indignant Bilbo having a go at them while they did it.

As a result, the magistrates have decided that they’re not going to declare Bilbo Baggins dead a second time unless they have a body, a coroners report explaining the cause of death, and a three day wake to make sure that he doesn’t get up and walk away again.

After the local wizard goes missing, his tower falls to the kobolds living in his basement. (Mostly because no one else wants it)

With the help of some weather frogs, a skeleton band, the raccoon news network, and sheer determination, kobold siblings Itsy, Bitsy and Spider set about their new vitally important responsibility: appeasing the strange people living in the Orb of Radio.

Of course they have no idea how the orb works or what they're meant to do to keep it happy.....but surely it can't be that hard....? Right?

FYI this HSP thing is basically autism without saying it's autism bc 'disability stigma' and addressed mostly at girls and women as they don't fit in 'autism stereotypes'. 🙄

Death by Dying (again)

Yesterday the entire first season of Mockery Manor which HOT DAMN that was good. They really really really nailed the worldbuilding and sound design and vibes of "deeply deeply unsafe theme park"

Since today is a Tuesday one (1) new episode of Sherlock & Co

Currently Watching Wakfu (Season 4 FINALLY! They put the entire show on their YouTube channel! Hurray for independent animation!) Yugo has finally completed the quest to find the rest of his birth family but unfortunately his birth family is in some deep deep shit. Such as having to establish diplomatic relations with every single nation on the world of 12. And also an invasion of beings who can suck people dry of their life force like a Capri-Sonne. Fun times to be had for all!

Current obsession:

The Amelia Project for sure and definitely. The only way to cope with the Vorfreude of going to their liveshow. The short version of why I'm so damn excited is that going to where people who share my interests are has always always always worked out well for me and there will be a literal boatful of people who like Amelia that night. I'm so excited.

Currently working on: exorcising the common cold
