Right now, in Silicon Valley (the Area 51 of consumer technology research and development), the boundaries between technology and food are slowly disappearing.

What seems like a scene right out of Back To The Future, Alex Garden (inventor and founder of Zume Pizza), shows the Bloomberg crew around his futuristic pizzeria, where almost everything is handled by robots. Proudly introducing his robots by their own personal name, you can’t help but be reminded of Vincent Price in Edward Scissorhands watching his beloved personified cookie-making robots at work. Marta, a robot with organised spider-like arms, is in charge of spreading the tomato sauce across the pizza base (which she does with sheer class), and Bruno, a one armed robot, carefully places each completed pizza from the production line to the oven.

While having robots prepare and cook your pizza is a cool enough novelty in itself, that’s not where Garden’s imagination stops - he’s made his own improvements to the pizza delivery industry by making deliveries possible in as little as 15 minutes. Instead of baking the pizza completely, the pizzas are baked half-way on the premises, then fully baked on board a delivery van which has its own pizza ovens installed. Each oven has a handy little eject button which slides the pizza out onto a plate, ensuring the driver never has contact with the pizza.

It’s definitely a cool concept, but do I prefer a robot over a human making my pizza (even if it’s called Marta)? Isn’t it all about the Fat Tony’s, the Papa John’s? The guys who take pride in their dough-flipping skills? If this concept becomes widely adopted, will all pizzas world-wide look and taste the same? I don’t know. Probably best to leave that argument to the people of New York. I’d obviously give it a go, but I don’t think there will be a robot revolution in the pizza industry any time soon.
