Grace was given literally 3 hours to make this decision that he never thought he'd ever have to make and

it wasn't "Grace sacrifices himself and humanity gets saved", it was "Grace sacrifices himself for the teeny weeny tiny wittle chance a chunk of humanity MIGHT get saved". Not even Stratt believed in the success of the Hail Mary mission. It was a DESPERATE attempt and it worked out against literally ALL odds. This isn't the trolley problem because Grace had NO guarantee him dying would even have a point; he saw the trolley operator switch the train to approach his tracks and then saw a second train from the other direction approach the five other people and thought "Now I'm dying for nothing".

It's also unfair to compare him to the three astronauts because they had so much more time and they knew what they were in for from the very beginning.

I like to think that if Grace had actually believed in the success of the project and had been given more time to think, he would have said Yes.
