like yes actually there is a conversation to be had about how a characters actions are framed and how they thematically fit with the rest of the story and it can in fact reflect the author's beliefs. some authors are even trying to make a point
not all depiction is glorification but sometimes it is and you need to be able to tell the difference. not because your immortal soul will be tainted by reading The Bad One, but because you need to have reading comprehension skills
Iβm sorry but Iβm gonna judge a movie with a 250 million budget and Oscar winning director harsher than I judge a musical made by a (formerly) smaller artist that started posting his music on TikTok for the fun of it
Well, and also Epic and Nolanβs Odyssey (which to be clear, I also did enjoy watching as a film, independently to the story it adapted) have entirely different ways in which they change what they are adapting.
Epic is an interesting case because itβs both adapting incredibly famous events in Greek mythology and telling its own tragedy, the impact of which is felt such that even the bittersweet happy ending makes everyone cry.
Epic the Musical is NOT called βThe Odyssey: The Musical.β Because itβs not The Odyssey: The Musical. It does adapt the tale of the Odyssey, but the overarching plot arc and moral tale come from the mind of Jorge Rivera-Herrans, and the events and characters of the Odyssey are adapted in a way that is faithful enough to feel representative of the tale but ultimately are adjusted to serve that larger story goal, which Jorge never pretended was something he took from the original Odyssey.
Epic works because itβs adapting the Odyssey without claiming to tell the story of the Odyssey. It tells the story of Epic through the legendary tales of the Odyssey, which is a subtle difference, but one that was executed very well.
Nolanβs Odyssey movie, on the other hand, feels from the way it is set up as though it should be portraying the story of the Odyssey, and then it doesnβt.
Hereβs the thing, though: I actually do like the tale told through Nolanβs Odyssey. I think the way itβs filmed, the way itβs set up, and the way the motifs pull together is very well done. The centrality of the invented Zeusβ law and the way Athenaβs character was handled (which is completely antithetical to the original story, but impactful in its own way) were executed well. But at the same time, it just comes with this feeling of claiming to be something it isnβt. If the film wasnβt the Odyssey, Iβd enjoy it better, because it is a good story, it just deeply is not the story it claims to be. In fact, Iβd say Epic the Musical actually tiptoes closer to the Odyssey story than a movie called the Odyssey.
And thatβs honestly the reason why Epic is, to me, a better adaptationβnot necessarily because itβs a better-told story (I also personally believe that, but also think thatβs something that would be more debatable if we could watch Nolanβs film without any prior knowledge of Greek mythology or even knowing he was adapting something to begin with), but because it delivers the story it claims to be in a masterful way.

All of this!! Like please let's not forget that his snappy s5 self is a) part of a coping mechanism of literally apocalyptic proportions and b) character growth rather than decline.
Martin has always had a stubborn, snide and even manipulative side. We have to keep in mind that what is presented to us as early season Martin is not actually fully who Martin is at his core. He's nervous, quiet, placating, being the nice guy bc he is so terribly afraid of people disliking him, trained to believe he's not worth taking up space (this is a symptom of his mum's treatment and his Lonely tendency showing way before he's marked properly).
But he doesn't need to do that anymore now. He already lived through the worst loneliness he could ever imagine, and Jon got him back, and Jon loves him. And Martin deserves to be fucking tired of being nice and placating and being stepped on, and it doesn't mean he's not still a kind and deeply caring person at his core.
If growing more into his own in an effort to keep up with Jon's new position of power and to cope with this impossible situation they're in means he's going to be snappy and impatient, then let the man be snappy, for god's sake!!! He's earned it.
I have to honestly do severe cartwheels in my head to imagine Jon and Martin's relationship in season 5 as anything but a picture of two people who went through hell together and being actually extremely healthy about it????
They keep checking in on each other, calling out each other on behaviour that was questionable, and never accusing the other of being a fundamentally bad person or being unreasonably bitter when said behaviour occurs. But just allowing the other person to hear them out, acknowledge the hurt, and moving on with a better understanding of each other. Consent is goddamn everywhere in this relationship and it absolutely blew my mind on first listen, because you never see that. Not on the granular level it's shown with jmart.
And even instances that seem mean, like when Jon went into the burning building, it was because Martin literally gave him the consent to take the lead on it, because Martin was trying to allow Jon the choice to do what he wanted, even if it made Martin uncomfortable. This is a direct change/growth from earlier, when Martin accused Jon of using him as an excuse to not do something (the eye gouging). Martin was literally trying to be better for Jon, by swallowing his discomfort to give Jon the ability to choose their path. Yeah it made him fucking scared and he wished Jon hadn't chosen it, but he was being selfless for Jon.
Now, was Jon acting out of purely good, altruistic motives in this case? No. But that's not the point here. It's something Jon needed (and incidentally, this need included Jon trying to do what Martin wanted: indulging in violence against the avatars).
But the point here for Martin is that he gave Jon the option to act on his own, and have Martin be by his side for whatever he needs, and that is a positive step for their relationship. Because it means that just as Jon would and has compromised himself (his feelings/needs/health) for Martin, Martin would compromise himself for Jon as well. This is the "for better or for worse" part of commitment and Jmart comes through that with flying colors.

.mp3 is very small, but uses lossy compression which means it's lower quality
.flac is smaller than .wav, but uses lossless compression so it's high quality
.m4a is an audio file format that apple uses. that's all i really know
downloading the music
doubledouble.top is a life saver. you can download from a variety of services including but not limited to apple music, spotify, soundcloud, tidal, deezer, etc.
i'd recommend ripping your music from tidal or apple music since they're the best quality (i think apple music gives you lossless audio anyway. .m4a can be both lossy and lossless, but from the text on doubledouble i assume they're ripping HQ files off apple music)
i also love love love cobalt.tools for ripping audio/video from youtube (they support a lot of other platforms too!)
of course, many artists have their music on bandcamp β purchase or download directly from them if you can. bandcamp offers a variety of file formats for download
file conversion
if you're downloading from apple music with doubledouble, it spits out an .m4a file.
.m4a is ok for some people but if you prefer .flac, you may wanna convert it. ffmpeg is a CLI (terminal) tool to help with media conversion
if you're on linux or macOS, you can use parameter expansion to batch convert all files in a folder. put the files in one place first, then with your terminal, cd into the directory and run:
for i in *.m4a; do ffmpeg -i "$i" "${i%.*}.flac"; done
this converts from .m4a to .flac β change the file extensions if needed.
soulseek
another way to get music is through soulseek. soulseek is a peer-to-peer file sharing network which is mainly used for music. nicotine+ is a pretty intuitive (and open-source) client if you don't like the official one.
you can probably find a better tutorial on soulseek somewhere else. just wanted to make this option known
it's bad etiquette to download from people without sharing files of your own, so make sure you've got something shared. also try to avoid queuing up more than 1-2 albums from one person in a row
tagging & organizing your music
tagging: adding metadata to a music file (eg. song name, artist name, album) that music players can recognize and display
if you've ripped music from a streaming platform, chances are it's already tagged. i've gotten files with slightly incorrect tags from doubledouble though, so if you care about that then you might wanna look into it
i use musicbrainz picard for my tagging. they've got pretty extensive documentation, which will probably be more useful than me
basically, you can look up album data from an online database into the program, and then match each track with its file. the program will tag each file correctly for you (there's also options for renaming the file according to a certain structure if you're into that!)
there's also beets, which is a CLI tool for... a lot of music collection management stuff. i haven't really used it myself, but if you feel up to it then they've got extensive documentation too. for most people, though, it's not really a necessity
how you wanna organize your music is completely up to you. my preferred filestructure is:
artist > album > track # track
using a music player
the options for this are pretty expansive. commonly used players i see include VLC, foobar2000, clementine (or a fork of it called strawberry), and cmus (for the terminal)
you can also totally use iTunes or something. i don't know what audio players other systems come with
i personally use dopamine. it's a little bit slow, but it's got a nice UI and is themeable plus has last.fm support (!!!)
don't let the github page fool you, you don't have to build from source. you can find the releases here
click the "assets" dropdown on the most recent release, and download whichever one is compatible with your OS
syncing
if you're fine with your files just being on one device (perhaps your computer, but perhaps also an USB drive or an mp3 player), you don't have to do this
you can sync with something like google drive, but i hate google more than i hate spotify
you can get a free nextcloud account from one of their providers with 2GB of free storage. you can use webDAV to access your files from an app on your phone or other device (documents by readdle has webDAV support, which is what i use)
disroot and blahaj.land are a couple providers i know that offer other services as well as nextcloud (so you get more with your account), but accounts are manually approved. do give them a look though!!
if you're tech-savvy and have an unused machine lying around, look into self-hosting your own nextcloud, or better yet, your own media server. i've heard that navidrome is a pretty good audio server. i unfortunately don't have experience with self-hosting at the moment so i have like zero advice to give here. yunohost seems to be a really easy way to manage a server
afterword
i don't know if any of this is helpful, but i just wanted to consolidate my personal advice in one place. fuck big tech. own your media, they could take it away from you at any moment
one thing i wanna say though is data centers being built in rural areas is environmental racism + classism so when i see ppl bitching about locals bitching about data centers im like oh itβs literally because itβs not your backyard being demolished and your air not being polluted and your waterways not being ran dry and your soundscapes not being raised to unhealthy decibels β¦.
