I am now also hyperfixating on The Adventure Zone (balance) (again) so expect to see posts about that too. Used to be a quiet lurker in both fandoms and am now back, but louder this time. Let Martin be petty with his tea making. Yes it is a de-escalation behavior to smooth over peoples’ opinion of him (and something I think to an extent he does enjoy) which doesn’t leave room for extravagant “fuck you” gestures. However there are plenty of places in the process for small victories in Martin’s mind, even if no one could fully point it out. Over or under brewing tea, wrong amounts/no cream or sugar. It’s just Martin being forgetful, he’s having an off day. That’s all.

martin can fade into the background very easily if there's two other people in the room. they'll talk to each other and he can just be a presence they can acknowledge if they want, but he won't push them to. but if it's only him and someone else, he'll get rambly. he doesn't like the awkward silence because it's just a reminder that on his own, no masking, he's not likable or enjoyable to be around. so he'll try to seem nice and friendly and useful and everything else he isn't enough of. ultimately, both of these are a result of him desperately not wanting to be a burden on the people around him

I also think that people are reading the “you don’t even have a dog” scene wrong. It seemed much more likely to me that this was not Eva being thoughtlessly cruel to Ryland but instead a projection of her own feelings. Eva in a way had her own personal life stolen from her so that she could become the scapegoat for all the ugly choices that needed to be made to preserve life on earth. She doesn’t have time for a romantic partner either, or a pet, even if she wants those things. Friendship in itself is a luxury that can only be stolen for her, it’s borrowed time until she has to give it up to complete her objective. That’s what Ryland was.

What she says to Grace is exactly how she views herself (in my opinion), as far as we know she also doesn’t have any immediate family in the picture. At the very least it’s not mentioned (that I know of). She would go in his place if she could, in a heartbeat, we know this. Which means that she values Grace’s life no less than she values her own. I’m not saying that line wasn’t harsh, even unfair, but the framing of it as a callous lack of care for Grace is inaccurate. It was a veiled plea from a woman who is painfully aware of the ticking time bomb hovering over earth, who NEEDS Grace to cooperate in order to stop it. And who will ultimately be blamed if this fails? It won’t be Grace.

I think a huge problem with how people analyze Eva’s actions is that a lot of you don’t know the difference between Morally Good and Nice. Sacrificing Grace in order to save the entire planet WAS the morally correct choice to make, but it was not Nice. Letting Ryland’s feelings take precedent over the continued survival of the entire population might have been nice In A Bubble, but it would have also been an indirect Mass Murder. If y’all are comfortable framing sending Ryland to space as murder then I need you all to get comfortable with the fact that not doing so would have also been murder.
