They would influence each other in this so much too. Callie and Wade watched as Charmy buzzed lazily around the fake flowers on her kitchen island. He moved slowly, his little nose poking into the center as he hummed softly.

The two humans exchanged a glance, moving closer.

“Charmy?” the redhead called, her voice soft as she reached a hand out. “Honey, can you hear me?” She gently touched his arm, but the little bee didn’t seem to notice. His eyes were unfocused, and he continued to make that soft humming sound.

“That’s weird,” Wade said, his own voice soft. “Why’s he acting like that?”

Callie shook her head. “I dunno.” She turned to him. “Think the others are the same way?”

Wade shrugged, looking around the rest of the kitchen. He pointed. “I think that’s Espio.”

She followed his pointing finger and barely made out a camouflaged chameleon perched on top of her fridge. “Espio? Hey, Espio!” The boy made no sign he’d heard, or recognized his name. Callie shook her head. “What is going on??”

“Okay, so Charmy’s trying to … I dunno, pollinate your fake flowers, and Espio is doing the camouflage thing,” the deputy said, and Callie could hear the anxiety trying to sneak in. But he took a breath to keep focused. “It’s like they’re … acting like the animals they are. So Silver …”

“Probably upstairs hiding under his bed,” Callie said, making sure the windows and doors were all closed so Charmy couldn’t escape. “Hedgehogs are nocturnal and normally skittish. And Eclipse …” She uttered a short laugh. “God, it’s hard to imagine him acting any more feral.”

She turned to Wade then, and noticed he’d turned an almost alarming shade of white as he pulled out his gun. “What? What are you doing?”

“Cal,” he said, a shake entering his voice. “Where’s Vector?”

their big eggs are actually that size for a similar reason to human babies having massive heads!! being bigger at birth can be important.

kiwi are trying SO HARD to become mammals. fur-like feathers, whisker-like feathers, little beady eyes, nocturnal, great sense of smell.... that's basically a mammal!! they're well suited for life on the forest floor.

their big eggs work alongside these adaptations to give them a leg up in the bird world. their young hatch already feathered! they're precocial, which means they're born with the ability to open their eyes and move around. like foals.

big egg = more powerful offspring from the get-go. babies don't need to spend precious time vulnerable while they develop on the ground when they've already done all that in the egg!
