i wrote this post over on bluesky today and, after receiving a few of the predictable "but what if i Want to write badly" responses you get to any opinion that can be taken as prescriptivist writing advice, i thought i'd talk more about what i'm getting at.
basically, it's an issue of suspension of disbelief. there are a lot of things in fantasy and historical writing that we're willing to look past. dragons, potatoes, the divine right of kings. we are able to suspend our disbelief that a monarch could be anything but a despicable tyrant if the story we're being told is convincing enough, or plays to our comforting worldviews about nobility and Great Man theory. we can also suspend it if we straight up didn't know that europe didn't have potatoes pre-columbian exchange. basically--it means it doesn't bother you that these elements aren't perfectly realistic. fiction is not required to be realistic. clue's in the name.
but there are some things we just can't ignore. some things hit us as out of place for the setting we've been presented, or the world as we understand it. it pulls us out of the story by reminding us, in that moment, that we are reading a constructed narrative made of a series of choices by an author. and for whatever reason, they made a Wrong choice, like plucking the wrong guitar string.

“Ursa was a bad mom” oh you mean the woman who was kidnapped by the ruler of her country into slave marriage and forced to bear his children? The woman who still loved said children so fiercely that she murdered a man to save one of them, knowing that it meant she would never see either of them again, who, after finally being allowed to go home, was so torn up by the thought of never seeing them again, so distraught at having to leave them with their abuser, and so so traumatized by the whole experience that she chose to have her memories erased rather than live with the memory of what she couldn’t save? You think she was a bad mom because she was kind of stern with her daughter when her daughter abused animals or taunted her brother about his imminent murder at the hands of their own father? That’s what you took away from a story about surviving horrific abuse and being helpless to protect or hold onto anything you love? That’s your takeaway? That she’s a bad mother?
This new renaissace of greek mithology due to Epic and the movies is very painful for someone who does classical studies. Aside from the vert anhistoricalshitty Tumblr takes on the mythos you've got some really beautiful art from people who have clearly tried to do some research on the matter and it's clearly made with heart but are still very wrong. And you cannot say that to an artist, it would be shitty. So you just say "beautiful work" while being like this
sorry i don’t think ill ever get past the blatant racism in the fact that the italian and irish mobs are heavily romanticized and almost idolized while latino/african american mobs and gangs are seen as the scum of the earth who single handedly ruin society. not saying either is good or anything but the absolute polar opposite way that white organized crime vs non-white organized crime is treated by media and white society is fucking nuts to me. just blatant stone cold hypocrisy
like white people organized crime is cool and sexy and movies and tv shows about it are classics (the godfather, the sopranos) but if black or latino people have organized crime and make music about it then it’s the reason society is collapsing or whatever and it’s glorifying violence. what if everything was equally nuanced
It's the suits. The mafia made a lot of effort displaying itself as having a visible form of respectability that people are familiar with. Same with yakuza. Ugly don't sell.
It's the codes. People like thinking that there's honor among thieves and that you won't get murdered willy-nilly by anarchists: yeah it's crime buuuuuut there's rules, isn't that reassuring?
It's the attitude towards the system. Are you here to take advantage of it or to piss on it? I'll be honest, genuinely, I'd rather 10000 times have to deal with the ndrangheta rather than the guys on crack who burnt a man alive in the back alley of my brazilian friend's supermarket.
Organized crime needs to be fought everywhere. Extremely violent gangs in latam are the scum of the earth and are actually a thing contributing to societal distress. Both of these crime groups can and will be romanticized in fiction (which is fine because that's what fiction is for). All of the above are true.
Hannibal (2013-2015)
at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.

ITALIAN MANWHORE SUMMER
always reblog italian manwhore summer
yo…. when jet breaks in the tea shop and accuses zuko and iroh of beinh firebenders….
do you think any of the patrons looked at zukos scarred face - obviously done by a firebender - and immediately think jet was an asshole? like
jet: hes a firebender!!!!
patrons, thinking about the backstory they concocted for zuko and iroh where their home was invaded by firebenders and they barely survived with their lifes so they could come and have a peaceful life selling tea in a city the war doesnt touch:
Jet: He’s a firebender!
The Patrons to the Tea Shop internally: You fucking stupid, sir? I think you might be stupid.
