I really hope that people see Lestat finding Gabi gone and that she cut her hair off as proof that you have to let the tale seduce you. She doesn’t always present masc in the books but she does go on a journey with her gender presentation and identity. She’s still not overly feminine in present day, especially not for someone of her time period.
Rolin has been saying it. You need to be patient. This isn’t episodic television, it’s serialised. Like chapters in a book. This was the case for the first two seasons as well. The story right now is incomplete and Gabrielle has an entire arc we’ve yet to fully see.
That’s not to suggest you can’t form opinions on the show before it’s fully aired. It just means you should be open to those opinions changing the more you see.
Personally I love the flashbacks. To me, it’s always like you can feel where we are in the story. I could point to the exact line in the book that came to mind when I saw the end of that episode. They’re subtle but they’re enough, in my opinion. You just need to pay attention to everything, as has always been the case with this show.
