Mark stopped as soon as he stepped into the garden.
Across the lawn, the washing line was full of freshly washed white terry nappies, all neatly pegged out in the sunshine. At the end of the line hung a pair of white plastic pants, gently moving in the warm summer breeze.
His face reddened.
âWhoâs coming over, Mum?â he asked shyly. âWhat are all those nappies on the line for? Everyoneâs going to think theyâre mine, hanging out here in the garden!â
His mum smiled at him.
âOh, Mark, thereâs no need to be embarrassed. These were Sallyâs nappies and plastic pants. She doesnât wet the bed anymore, so she doesnât need them.â
Mark looked suspiciously from his mother to the washing line.
âThen why have you washed them?â
âWell,â she said, smiling, âbecause I told you we needed to do something about those occasional wet beds of yours â and those little accidents when you get overexcited. These should help keep the sheets dry at night and your clothes dry during the day.â
Markâs eyes widened as he realised what she meant.
âYou mean⌠theyâre for me?â
His mum laughed affectionately and pointed towards his red shorts.
âYes, young man. Theyâre for you. Youâre going to look very cute back in terry nappies and plastic pants!â
Mark stared up at the row of nappies fluttering conspicuously above the garden.
âMum!â he protested, his cheeks turning an even deeper shade of red.
