Gamby sees Russell for exactly who he is, and Gamby still loves him. Gamby CHOOSES to love him, despite everything. Even after they get their principal positions at the end of season one and they no longer need to maintain their tentative alliance, Gamby continues to choose to love Russell. Not because he has to or because he’s obligated to be around him because they’re family, but because he loves him - the real him who is sneaky and conniving and vengeful. Even when Russell has the job Gamby wants, Gamby continues to love him.

Which is why it’s so powerful in the series finale when Russell is bleeding out and the thing he focuses on is, probably for the first time ever in his life, hearing someone say they love him and actually mean it.
