“Syaoran! Stop pouting in the corner and come help me over here!”
Bristling, Syaoran tears his eyes away from his phone and peeks over his shoulder, a scowl still apparent on his face. Sakura has her back to him again, but he can tell by her posture that she’s smiling big. A tiny baby hand sticks out on her lap, wet and glistening from what is most definitely drool.
His frown deepens as the hand drags a moistening trail of spit across the fabric of Sakura’s skirt, which is unfortunately the exact second Sakura cranes her neck to glance over at him.
Needless to say, she’s displeased with the sight.
“Syaoran, she’s your own niece! Come on!”
And now he’s done it. Made her frown. The very thing he’s aimed to never do.
There is never any chance of winning when it came to Sakura.
With a sigh, he pockets his phone and scoots closer to the pair of them.
“This isn’t really how I envisioned spending my break in Hong Kong with you, you know,” he mutters as he plops himself down next to her. “I had an itinerary.”
Sakura gives him an apologetic laugh. “I know, dear, but Fanren asked and it’s only for today. It would be rude of us to refuse after the hospitality they’ve shown us ever since we arrived.”
“Hospitality? It’s my home, too,” Syaoran points out, reaching out a hand to stop the baby from falling off Sakura’s knee. They were only here for a three-day weekend, and today had been the most free day. Therefore, he’d had an entire date planned out from morning to night starting with breakfast at a renowned waffle dessert cafe, then shopping at the sky mall, and ending with a romantic night time stroll through the park. It would’ve been a lovely evening if it weren’t for the fact that Fanren’s babysitter had last minute dropped out due to a family emergency and Sakura agreed without question to this unfortunate chore.
“But little Chi Chi is sooooooo cute, ne, Syaoran?” Sakura asks with a kissy face as she holds the baby up to him and lifts her up and down, causing his niece to shriek with mirth.
Syaoran grimaces as his eyes catch the trail of snot trickling down Chi Chi’s smile. She promptly puts her fingers in her mouth as she giggles, sending a shiver of horror down his spine.
“Yeah... real cute,” he mumbles under his breath. Sakura beams at him.
“And besides,” she continues. “Sometimes, the best adventures are unplanned! Isn’t that right, Chi Chi?”
Chi Chi laughs grow louder as Sakura nuzzles her nose against the baby’s stomach. Small hands pat at Sakura’s head, causing her smile to widen even more. Syaoran blinks. Despite the drool, and despite all the other unthinkable liquids oozing out of this tiny creature, something squeezes in Syaoran’s heart at the sight of it.
Although they’re still young, Syaoran would be lying if he said he’d never given a single thought to having kids someday. While there are many disgusting factors that come with raising a child, as he continues to watch Sakura give Chi Chi the time of her life, something in him opens up and rearranges itself, clinking together like gears shifting into place. A string of light aligning the stars from somewhere in his chest straight to the soft glow in Sakura’s eyes.
Sakura’s voice cuts through his reverie. Her mouth is slightly parted in confusion, her emerald orbs wide and curious as they search his face.
Five years ago, he would’ve felt his cheeks catch fire and avoided her gaze at once, too embarrassed to be caught staring at anything, especially her, in such an unguarded, tender way. Now, however, Syaoran finds that he doesn’t feel the urge to flee. After all this time of being together, he knows that between them, there’s nothing left to hide.
Relaxing his shoulders, his lips curve up on their own accord, an unabashed smile spreading slowly across his features.
“Come here,” he says, stretching out an arm and beckoning her over.
“Huh?” she tilts her head, looking utterly and adorably confused with a baby in her lap. “What is it?”
Placing his hand under her elbow, he gently tugs until she moves into his arms, leaning her back against his chest.
“You’re acting strange, Syaoran,” she giggles as she leans her head against his cheek. Chi Chi is still tucked safely in her arms, a pacifier now sticking out from her mouth. “What’s going on?”
Her weight is warm and solid, a comforting presence he can wrap himself around. Running his fingers through her hair, he brushes his lips over her temple and lingers there, breathing in her scent.
“You’re beautiful,” he murmurs against her skins “And I love you.”
Sakura gives a sharp intake of breath. Turning her head, she looks up at him, a glowing smile on her face.
“Give me a little warning next time!” she hisses as she elbows him in the ribs. Burying her forehead in Chi Chi’s pink onesie, she snuggles in closer to Syaoran and sighs.
“I love you, too,” she mutters, her sound muffled by the fluffy fabric. With another exhale, she lifts her head back up, expression alight with joy. “Now let’s go back to babysitting.”
“Okay,” he says easily, giving her shoulder one last squeeze before letting her go.
Maybe the best moments really do happen off the itinerary after all.
