Pterodaustro guinazui
A small, bizarre pterosaur from early Cretaceous South America. A member of Ctenochasmatidae, a pterosaur group characterized by their filter feeding dentition. Using modified teeth on the bottom jaw and crushing teeth on the upper jaw, Pterodaustros sifted shallow waters feeding on small creatures. A feeding style similar to flamingos may have resulted in pink coloration.
The shaman of Bad Dürrenberg are the remains of a 25-35 year old woman, who was burried 8600 to 9000 year ago in Germany. Around her, were the remains of an extraordinary head-dress, made from the bones and teeth of different animals such as deer, wild boar, crane and turtle
I am absolutely in love with this woman and have been obsessively watching the YouTube playlist about this archaeological find. They found abnormalities on her skull and vertebrae to indicate a neurological condition and altered cerebral blood flow that most likely would have marked her as a shaman when she was young. Also it’s a 9,000 year old grave and grave goods from hundreds of years after the original burial were also excavated. So people were continuing to visit her grave and leave offerings for hundreds of years.

Das Grab der Schamanin von Bad Dürrenberg ist eines der Highlights in der Dauerausstellung des Landesmuseums und ein Fund von Weltrang. Die
Shikamaia akasakaensis was a giant bivalve that lived during the mid-Permian (~274-267 million years ago), in the shallow tropical waters of a carbonate platform atop an oceanic seamount in the region of what is now Japan.
It had a long flat shell up to about 1m (3'3") long, with a raised triangular hump at the front and wing-like flanges at the sides — a shape that helped to spread out its weight on the soft seafloor sediment.
Its shell was once thought to have been translucent, allowing it to host symbiotic photosynthetic algae inside its body tissues and providing it with the extra sustenance needed to grow to such a huge size. However, more recent studies suggest its shell was actually opaque to sunlight, so instead it may have hosted chemosynthetic bacteria similar to some modern clams.
…Or, considering that it shared its habitat with some other big invertebrates such as a large species of the marine snail Euconospira and a giant crinoid, Shikamaia could simply have been living in such an incredibly food-rich environment that it was able to attain gigantic sizes purely from normal filter-feeding.

Yeah okay there are like 11 species of heron native to the USA and yes fine I’ve only managed to spot 10 of those species. You might think I’m bitter about that one species evading me but I’m not. I’m actually the Least Bittern person about it in the entire world

Can we stop acting as if something has to be hundrets or thousands years old to count as part of "culture"? Your mamas chicken soup recipe wich was handed to her from her Mom? Thats culture too! Very personal piece at that! And whilst we are at it, can we stop acting like belonging to "an old culture" is some moral highground? Everyones ancestors all just cooked with water.

S. snuffleupagus, a newly described species of fish, is named after the beloved Sesame Street character, Mr. Snuffleupagus, to which it bear
SNUFFLEUPAGUS REAL
Fantastic article!! The guys looking for it were fish researchers who saw it one time, knew instantly it was an undescribed species, and then tried for nearly 20 years to find and document it!
It's a type of ghost pipefish, related to seahorses, and it floats around coral reefs looking like a piece of algae and hunting unsuspecting prey
They are, of course, named after Snuffleupagus from Sesame Street!
Later on it the project, they got citizen science involved, and people across the Pacific started reporting sightings of snuffy fish from all over!
Hooray for science and hooray for S. snuffleupagus !

"There are lots of ways to get involved with World Eel Day. Your eel inspired activities, photos, resources, art, outcomes, thoughts or messages can be shared online on all social media platforms with the hashtags #WorldEelDay2026 #WorldEelDay
For example, you could organise an eel event , draw or make an eel or write a story or a poem. Remember to tag or collaborate with @eelsuitcase on instagram"
Basically, get cr-eel-ative! (these are not my best work)
