You know, on "Simon is violent/Simon is gentle" and so on, I think it's really, REALLY worth to have in mind this concept I stumbled on the internet years ago and stayed with me and that I think really fits what we see of Simon
Paraphrasing it goes like this "you look at a woman and judge her clothes and then you immediately say to yourself why are you judging her clothes let her. The first thought is what society ingrained in you and the second thought is who you actually are/want to be"
Yes Simon has a history of killing and has anger explosions and violence does come easy to him, but there's clear guilty and remorse. Taking in consideration his mom giving him at least a knife sheath and the dream-memory of him as a kid surrounded by corpses...
The Butcher, the violence and anger and such, being a weapon, is what Eden made of him, *but that is not who he wants to be* and he constantly fights to step away from that edge, sometimes slipping more than others. This is something that I def try to keep in mind when writing Simon.
... And considering that he doesn't want to be the Butcher anymore, the fact that this is apparently the only thing the Red Eyed God saw in him is gut-wrenching and lends even more to the "a god see the world through a pinhole and thinks it understands everything". It saw Simon through a glimpse and thought that was everything there was to Simon.
The fact that Simon does let himself be the Butcher again but with the goal of trying to protect the black box and make it reach surface for humanity, also, does show to Simon that who he was *can be conducted* to act in the name of something almost good, in a way. Not to cause a massacre but to help give the last of humanity hope.
