Sudden inspiration struck while I was playing around with some ideas while sketching, and so I made a comic pointing out the juxtaposition between these two scenes from Chapter 12 and Chapter 15 (and a flashback in Chapter 16 that also points it out lol) of ‘He Had Considered Travel in His Retirement Plans’.
Now I’m shamelessly reminding everyone about the scene because I’m very proud of the setup, :P

CH 12
“You’re actually really good at this, Sukea.” Genma praised.
Sukea didn’t even look up.
“Genma,” he said, voice flat, “I hate this so much. I’m getting this done quickly so I can leave quickly. If I ever become a desk ninja, I want you to take a senbon and jam it in me right here.”
He lifted a hand and tapped a precise spot on his neck—one he knew would be instantly fatal, probably painless and situated in most people’s blind-spot.
Only after the words left his mouth did he realize he probably shouldn’t be joking like that to this young, bright-eyed, genin Genma.
But instead of looking disturbed, Genma just blinked. Then, very seriously, asked:
“Would you prefer poison on the tip, or just a clean kill?”
Sukea finally looked up, narrowing his eyes and reevaluating how much of himself he was allowed to be.
“Surprise me.”
Genma grinned.
CH 15
The tanto splintered, shards of steel flying as the last flickers of electricity surged through the broken weapon and into his opponent. But it wasn’t enough to stop them. And in the same instant, agony.
A blade meant for Guy struck Sukea instead. It sank deep into his shoulder, searing pain ripping through him as his knees buckled, his body screaming in protest.
He bit down on his lip, refusing to cry out. He wouldn’t give in. Not here. Not now.
Before he could crumple completely, a strong hand caught him. Genma.
His grip was tight, urgent.
Then—a flash of silver.
A senbon, driven straight into the stunned swordsman’s neck.
The enemy barely had time to choke before Genma was hauling Sukea backward, dragging him toward the cover of a jagged alcove in the rocky cliffs.
CH 16
Genma could have pushed the issue, but it wasn’t the time. Not with Guy sniffling at his side. Not with the weight of his first kill still pressing against his chest, guided by Sukea’s dumb words—“If I ever become a desk ninja, I want you to take a senbon and jam it in me right here.”—echoing in his head as he’d done just that to the enemy, ensuring the kid had many more years to complain about it.

My favourite Adrian headcanon is that they're a biologist/zoologist who has seen so much shit, they're completely unphased by any and every alien habit of Grace's.
I mean full-on khaki-shorts-wearing, traversing-wilderness-with-nothin'-but-a-machete Adrian who yoinks snakes outta trees and pets swamp puppies and will unflinchingly dig around in elephant faeces for signs of a rare parasitic tapeworm if needed.
Oh, humans eat socially? No problem, Adrian has observed many many animals eat. Did you know that an obscure species of small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid also eats socially? Adrian can give you a not-so-short presentation on them.
Oh, the human has no external carapace and so its internal sounds are absurdly loud, wet and off-putting? No problem, Adrian was just conducting an expedition last month researching the incredible eridian animal, the Wet Loud Worm from the south-east region of Wet Loud Wormland. They're desensitised, it's fine.
Oh, Grace leaks often from many orifices and it can be a bit of a learning curve to get used to? No problem for Adrian, see Wet Loud Worm paragraph again!
Meanwhile, Rocky is bewildered as to how he's managed to third-wheel both of his relationships, because both Adrian and Grace are nerds who nerd out about things, and Adrian is shaking in their carapace with enthusiasm to learn more about human culture and biology, not to mention everything about earth animals. And yeah, sure, Grace might be a molecular biologist, but he'll be damned if he'll pass up an opportunity to learn about alien fauna from a fellow scientist, and yes, Adrian, he'd love to hear about the small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid, and he's so excited to learn more about the Wet Loud Worm, do go on.
#zoologist adrian would be absolutely captivated by the concept of Plants. erid doesn't have those#you mean your atmosphere is so clear your entire planet has ground level sunlight and there's an entire subsection of life#defined by their ability to turn it into energy... because the rest of it DOESN'T? sure you synthetize vitamin d out of it#but that's nothing#saviour grace why don't you photosynthesize question? skill issue question?

The difference in perspective about "being eaten" between Blue and Caine is so funny to me like Caine's all:

Had a nightmare where Caine talked like ChatGPT. It was so terrifying that I woke up crying and panicking and started stabbing random people on the street.
