Carrie Liao - Alien visitor
For anyone still interested in these, this is an update.
Lineart and values have been done but, no joke, I have NO IDEA where to go from here. Color has broken me. I’ve been stumped for so long, leaving them and coming back.
I’m still extremely proud of where they’re at. I just don’t know how I want to color or render these. (Feel free to make suggestions.) I just wanted to share them with y’all :)
I drew this stupid burger I saw that brings me comfort and joy

i might well have published a novel by now if everything I thought I knew about storytelling didn't keep getting existentially destroyed
I thought that intellectual property laws created the idea of "fanfiction."
But actually, it is not true: Intellectual property laws created the idea of original fiction. Fanfiction is the one that has always been there the whole time.
It seems possible that the idea of originality is stunting or damaging to storytelling. If there is a compelling idea or a cool character, we have to make it seem different, like we came up with it ourselves. But this means characters, worlds, and concepts are effectively siloed in their creator's work, and people who seek to write a story have to pretend to assemble these things from scratch, concealing and de-emphasizing the ways that they are derivative.
One result of this is that many "original fictions" are extremely shallow and have little iconicity or enduring capability. Characters who are "everymen" with few distinctive characteristics or abilities and not much depth or complexity proliferate. Instead of building upon what is already built, writers have to re-invent their own version of that which is iconic and compelling, and it rarely if ever is actually iconic or compelling, because someone else already "took" so many iconic or compelling ideas, and yours has to be "different from" those ones.
But, I think, building an iconic and truly captivating character, world, or idea is not easily done by a single individual.
Essentially, lots of original fiction is mired in a swamp of being required to re-iterate the basic framework of a story, instead of building a story from a collectively created framework that already exists.
Since last year, when I got into actually reading a lot of fanfiction, I have realized a critical error in how I and others thought about fanfiction.
I thought that fanfiction was a collection of works, each derived from a central work, the "canon."
Now I realize that fanfictions are just as much, if not more, defined by their relationship to each other as they are by their relationship to canon. This creates a dynamic, multi-branched, interconnecting web of creative works where storytellers are constantly expanding and iterating upon the strongest, most enduring elements of a collectively created story.
This connects to the analysis of "originality" in the above reblog: in contrast to how "original fiction" writers have the pretense of inventing their stories from scratch (but they aren't really), fanfiction authors are NOT "inventing from scratch" with a pre-existing substrate; they're actively in conversation with other works, and freely iterating upon each other, with no obligation to pretend to have distinct ideas from other fanfictions.
I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed…
I’ll go into more detail on Patreon this week

*through gritted teeth* when i do something wrong and am politely asked to change my behavior its just a simple request to fix a problem and not an indictment of my character. when i do something wrong and am politely asked to change my behavior its just a simple request to fix a problem and not an indictment of my worth as a human being
Description
The reason Disney's Robin Hood is a fox, and the Sheriff is a fat wolf is because it was originally going to be a Reynard the Fox adaptation
They changed their minds after realizing Reynard is a terrible role model. Like, lies to, cheats, and eats the other characters. Regularly is presumed dead, hears everyone talk smack about him at his funeral, then plans revenge. Sometimes on his wife for remarrying so fast.
Disney used Ken Anderson's designs for Robin Hood, instead.
Reynard the fox is a series of fables that parody Medieval Court.
In Wasteland
He disguises himself as Robin Hood to con the characters of Wasteland. Peg Leg Pete sends you to go get and arrest him. You have the option to either accept a bribe from Reynard, or turn him in.
Haven't done one of these in a while
Edit: Ok, I forgot to finish a sentence, I fixed it, please reblog THIS version
