Because I got reminded of my past homelessness just now, y'all really don't know how fucking abysmal it is out there. Genuinely every day since that I've woken up with my own roof over my head that isn't a shelter or the open sky or an awning of a roof has been a day that I thank God. You really don't know what you take for granted until you don't have it. Food desperation is on a whole nother level mid January when it's 20 below and you've not eaten in days and don't have a place to go home to. Feeling unsafe or threatened is different when you don't have a phone and know that however you get out is on you and no one will likely even know you're missing. You feel the scorn of society in a different, more visceral way. The people who might've smiled at you in stores avoid your gaze awkwardly. Mothers pull their children close, when you're hardly more than a child yourself. You're an acceptable target to the scum and trash and authorities. You're never safe. Never secure. Falling asleep at night is a gamble.

There's no permanence out there. Someone you might know in passing will disappear one day and never be seen again and because of the area you don't know if it was gang activity or the cops or human traffickers or if someone took their hatred of the world out on someone the world won't miss. But you miss them, and hold a part of them with you to this day. Their name will be forgotten, and you never knew it. Kindness is never found in those who brag of it most, and it's always those who have the least who are the most willing to share. They know what it's like to have nothing, too. It isn't as scary an idea to them, when all they know is the absence of something. The infrastructure is unforgiving, and travelers shy away from your gaze. You don't have proper shoes. The only showers you get are from truck stops. Asking may I have a dollar, just a dollar, can I just have water so I can see another day, please, is a question that spurns disdain in the gentlefolk now so far above you. And this isn't something you will ever understand, unless you're in a similar situation (God forbid), and know the biting cold as you try to get warm between two buildings that kinda sorta provide shelter. Until you get the cops called on you for daring to exist in a public space and looking desperate. Until you know a simple act of kindness so profound it causes you to sob like a child on the spot.

There's no greater point to me saying this. There's no greater lesson here, no call to action. People are two-faced and cold, but that's something known. I certainly don't want pity, and I definitely don't hope for you to ever be able to fully understand this. Others have it far worse than I ever did. Some people only know this life. Actually, I would ask you to be conscious of the way you interact with the world. Become more aware of your subconscious biases. Appreciate the little things, even if it's just having a pair of shoes on your feet or not feeling gnawing hunger for most of the day. Be kind to others. Overcome your discomfort with their misfortune. It could be you, might be you, in a day or a week or two years or never. You must face the reality of the world we live in, and all of the pain that comes with it. And please appreciate the ability to brush your teeth and the liberty to shower.

Please think about these words. Please internalize them. Understand that, for all your empathy, you can still put your phone down or stop picturing this reality. You can walk away. That is a luxury many don't have, and I am fortunate to be where I am today. I am one of the miraculous few who gets out. There is no leaving the streets behind once you're out on them, even if you leave. I still walk through the abandoned areas of that city and feel that visceral hunger tearing me from within. I don't feel the fear anymore. I have actual shoes now, and I see the people who didn't make it out, or haven't made it out yet, and I have nothing to offer them. I would give my life to spare a child or an elderly person or a drug addict that existence. Hell really is here, and it's found in the apathy of your fellow man. It's found in the narrow alleyways where the discarded and lost find solace. there is no poetry for the trafficking or police brutality. There is nothing that will atone the unnecessary blood shed in the ignorant and hateful face of this empire. There are children out there, who will never know better.
