A Girl With The Aesthetic Of A 1930s Uni Professor

Irish is the native language of Irish people. It’s an ancient language that is on the brink of extinction as a direct result of colonialism and cultural and physical genocide.

Names like Saoirse (freedom), Áine (radiant), Aoife (beautiful) etc are traditional Irish names. They’re spelt “funny” because Irish is a different language from English, and has some sounds that aren’t found in the English language.

There are villages in Wales that speak only Welsh as well, I grew up in one that was mixed language but pretty much everyone bar a few immigrant parents spoke Welsh.

Here a some example names

Efnision, Branwen, Iown, Rhys, Nerys, Ceridwen, Sian, Taliesin

A few example names are from the Mabinogion which is the Welsh book of fables and includes some of the first stories about King Arthur.

This language is dying, but it's fighting to stay alive, and a lot of White Americans don't understand the history and significance of Welsh names.

“All I’m saying is, they should have some kind of safety belt.”

Sirius laughed, the kind of full belly laugh that bursts from your chest and makes your head fall back. He held an arm across his ribs as Remus shifted under his shoulder to steady him. “Ow, ow! Lily stop, you’re going to kill me.” 

Lily rolled her eyes as she helped Madam Pomfrey pull back the sheets on the hospital cot. “It’s your own fault for being so bloody reckless.” 

Sirius winced as Remus ducked out from under his arm so he could lower himself onto the cot. “Well we won, didn’t we? Go, go, Gryffindor!” He roared, the rest of the quidditch team chanting the call back before Pomfrey shooed all but the other marauders and Lily out.

James fished his glasses out of his quidditch robe pocket and put them on with a grin. “Don’t worry, Evans, Pops’ll have him patched up in no time, won’t you?”

The disgruntled Pomfrey muttered darkly to herself as she dug around inside a cabinet. “Merlin knows I’ve had more than enough practice patching you hooligans up.” She straightened with a tray full of potions and poultices, her expression softening a bit as she turned back to face them. “Let me see to those cuts quickly, Potter, then all of you out so I can attend to mr. Black’s injuries.”

James stepped obediently forward and let Pomfrey apply a quick poultice to the various nicks and bruises across his face and arms. 

“There, leave those on for the next few hours and then rinse them with some rosewater, you know the routine.” 

He saluted. “Aye, marm!” 

She smacked him lightly upside the head. “Cheeky, go on now, out the lot of you.” 

James gave Sirius a fist bump as he walked toward the door, Peter patted his shoulder gingerly as he trailed behind James. Remus, who hadn’t left his side, glanced at the other boys leaving, and then at Lily.

She moved over to Sirius and bent down to place a quick kiss to the top of his head. “Congratulations on winning the game you dolt.”

Shit this got me out here cryin in the club

We have sooo many international students from hot climates who are just totally unprepared for how cold it gets and especially for how cold and WET it gets.

Every day in the library I watch international students come in wearing wet shoes and thin coats shivering and miserable.

Last year I saw my neighbor trying to scrape the season's first big frost off his window with a little plastic protractor bc it's all he had. Obviously I scraped his windshield for him and told him to go get his own scraper at the dollar store. And when the snow really hits, I even use a broom.

Usually by their second winter here, most students from hot climates have figured it out, but I know they're so so miserable the first time around.

Even students from the US from states that don't get as cold or wet in the winter aren't prepared. So many kids from Texas are stepping out in sneakers and asking me what kind of snow shoes I recommend. Problem is, by the time winter really sets in, it's super common that people are out of funds for school supplies and can't buy anything they need for winter anyway.

Winter is serious business, and I can't imagine having a never experienced a cold climate and then going with so little information.

And I know people can say it's their own fault for not looking it up. But there are certain things you just can't imagine until you experience them. I can read all about the average temperatures in middle Eastern countries that get hotter than I've ever felt, but I don't really know what that climate feels like and how to dress.

that’s not what did the damage, though. what fucked that old dude up is that i saw my sister hit him from where i was standing and i ran over and started beating him with MY golf club. my mom says that i didn’t know what the hell was happening, but i squared up.
