٠࣪⭑ Frank had met you a year ago on a mission. He didn't expect to dig up a metal container to pull you out, or hide you at his place from who put you there while you healed. It wasn't all bad, you were quiet, respectful, kept to yourself.
At night you were back in that container, begging for help.
"Let's me out! Help! Someone help! I cant breathe!"
You banged on the lid, your air was quickly fading and you were panicking.
You sat up in bed with a gasp, then winced at the sharp movement and crawled your arm. You could hear your heart pounding in your ears, your body shaking. You see Frank walk in with a cup of water.
"Sorry." You mumble.
"No issue, I was already awake. Here." He hands you the water.
"Same thing again?"
You nod.
"..I know how you feel."
You don't push it, he was a very closed off guy, you knew that. You finish the watet and set the glass on the nightstand.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
A moment of silence goes by.
"Wanna talk about it or something?" He asks. First normal conversation he was trying to have, perhaps he realized you were a little like him in a way.
You look up at him. "You wanna hear that? Its not anything special."
"I dug your ass 6ft out of the ground from a metal coffin, I think thats special." He says, pulling up a chair and crossing his arms after sitting down.
You smile a tiny bit. "I guess." You sigh softly, looking down at your hands. "I was involved in a crappy business before this, the guy I worked for never took no for an answer. I wanted to leave but he kept threatening. For some stupid reason I thought he was bluffing, so I cut contact."
Frank listens silently.
"He found me, we had a huge fight, I got away but I shot one of his guys. He found me that day you dug me up. And... he hurt me. Really bad. You already know that I guess. But he went out of his way to kindly kill my family and boyfriend."
Frank tenses slightly. Not liking your situation at all, reminded him of someone.
You let out a slow shaky breath. "Sorry, I didnt mean to dump my trauma on you."
"Its fine. I understand, literally."
You look at him.
"You wanna talk about it?" You ask hesitantly.
"No."
After a minute of silence, "lift your shirt I wanna check the bandage."
You lift your shirt, showing him your bandaged side. The bandage was soaked through again.
"Damn, I thought it was done. Let me go get the kit."
"Okay.." You say softly.
He leaves and soon returns with the meditation. He takes out alcohol and cotton pads.
"Do you have to use that?"
"On you? Yes. On myself? No. Move your hand."
He starts at you until you reluctantly move your hand. He peels the bandage off and pours some rubbing alcohol on a pad, he dabs the pad around ths wound. You hiss and flinch away from it, he grabs your hip and holds you still. Over the course of the 8 days hes had you, he noticed how much you hated this stuff, he couldnt blame you, it did sting a little.
He finishes with the bandages and packs everything up.
"Try to sleep, body recovers faster when you do." He mutters.
The next morning you sat at the table, drinking a coffee. He quietly cleaned his guns. Your phone buzzed and you pulled it out, Frank frowned.
"I thought I told you to toss that. You know how easy it is to track people on that crap?"
You roll your eyes. "What am I suppose to do without a phone?"
"Live? If you want a phone go grab a nokia."
"Frank. We live in 2026, I am not using a 40 year old brick phone."
He scoffs and reaches over, snatching your phone.
"Hey-!"
"Zip it. My house my rules, get something untraceable or get nothing."
"Give me my phone back! You cant just take it. I need it."
"Hell no." He starts gripping it like hes going to snap it. Your eyes widen and you stand up quickly, chair scraping across ths floor.
"No, stop!" You try to grab it, he holds it out of reach, using his other arm to block you.
"Don't, this is for both of our goods."
"Frank, give it!"
"'Give it'? What are you? Five?" He tries to break it again.
"No!" You shove him hard, making him stumble into the wall. He had no idea why you were so desperate. His anger flared up a bit and he grabbed your good arm, turning it and pinning you to the table.
"Do not touch me." He growls, pissed off now.
Your heart races, you try to stand up but he won't let you.
"Why are you so desperate for it? You addicted or something?" He asks, tightening his grip on your wrist.
You were silent for a moment before answering, voice small and shaky.
"It... it has pictures and videos.. of my family. And voicemails."
He stops, slowly losening his grip. He looked back at the phone in his hand, he stared at it for a long minute. Your life was literally on here, whatever you had left of your family was on here. He sighed and set the phone down on the table and let you go. You immediately snatched it and turned to look at him. Frank was looking away from you, going back to cleaning his guns.
You didn't speak the rest of the day, you just sat in your room staring out the windows.
Frank felt a little bad, knowing he was a second away from erasing what you had left. Later that day while you were sleeping he managed to download all the photos and videos and voicemails to something untraceable, then he smashed the phone.
A few days later.
You were by the window, watching the city, when you got a horrible feeling. It was like your body was yelling for you to move. You moved a millisecond before a bullet flew through the window. Frank came rushing in, he saw the bullet hole and the open window. Immediately he closed the curtains everywhere and dragged you somewhere safer.
"Its a sniper, whoever tracking you found you. We have to go." He says, reaching for his go-bags.
You nodded and went to grab your things, you booked it out of the apartment and into his van. Immediately he stopped a tail, two of them to be more specific.
"Shit. Buckle up." He orders. You look into the mirror and see the two cars, you hold the seat belt tighter.
He weaved through the new York traffic, the two car stayed right on his ass. You were internally panicking as they started firing gunshots.
Frank grabbed a gun and shoved it into your hands.
"Shoot a tire!" He barked. You looked at him like he was insane.
"Are you crazy!?"
"I said shoot the fucking tires!" He shouts.
You sped around the city, trying to lose the tails. Frank pulled out every weapon he had and you panicked. Frank sped into an intersection and to his left a black van slammed into the driver's side of the car.
The car flipped, both you and Frank knocked unconscious for a few minutes. You woke up to sirens, shouting, and someone pulling you out from the car. You faded out again.
Frank woke up with his hands chained above his head, on his knees. He was bleeding from the head and nose. He looked around, spotting you in a chair. They were in a warehouse or something, he whistles to get your attention.
"Y/n. Wake up." He says loud enough for you to hear. You stirred, grimacing, your lip was split and a cut on you eyebrow was bleeding. You looked around and saw Frank opposite of you.
"F-frank..?" "Yea its me. You good?"
You let out a low whine of pain. "Everything hurts... I think I rebroke my arm."
He huffs and hangs his head.
A minute later the door swings open and a group of men walk in. You both look up, the leader seems to look at you first, you immediately shrink, blood going cold. He smirks slightly and turns to Frank.
"Frank Castle. The not so dead man. You have a big bounty on your head, sir."
He takes a few steps closer.
"Forgive me for not introducing myself. Im Victor Cold."
Victor starts pacing around. "Imagine my surprise when my man told me that the Frank Castle was hiding the biggest inconvenience in New York."
He glances at you, you look away.
Frank spits on the floor. He looks up at Victor. "So what now? You're gonna turn me in and kill her?"
Victor hums quietly. "I would. But you're in my way. You're the reason why she didn't die in the first place. So I might kill you both, and take the title as 'the man who killed the punisher'."
Frank scoffs, finding the whole situation absurd.
"I dont wanna be involved in your petty bitch fight." He says roughly.
Victor scoffs, "the petty bitch is her." He walks over to you. "Stole 5 million dollars from me."
"I told you I didnt steal it!" You say. He glares down at you.
"Shut the hell up, I have you on camera stealing my goddamn money!"
For a few minutes there was back and forth between all three of you, Victor was getting angry, Frank was getting pissed, and you felt exhausted and drained. They eventually left you both alone for half an hour.
"Im sorry I dragged you into this, you're gonna get hurt because of me." You say softly.
"Eh, I chose to keep you. So not really your fault." He says. "Getting out of here is our next worry. How are you tied?" He asks.
You look down at yourself. You explain to him how you're tied. He nods and thinks of a plan to get you both out. He lifts his head and looks at you, then at your arm in a sling.
"Look. I have an idea but it might hurt." He says carefully.
You frown.
Next thing you know you're quietly grunting as you free your arms, you wince. You bend down and free your ankles, you quickly stand and rush over to Frank. You start to unchain him before they come back.
"Quickly, quickly." He mutters.
The door suddenly swings open as you loosen it, frank pretends to still be chained. You gasp and hide behind him.
"Ah, she escaped." Victor says, he suddenly takes out his gun and shoots you in the thigh. You yelp and fall backwards. Frank shoots up to his feet, immediately attacking Victor and his men. He manages to get a gun and shoot three dead, you meanwhile clutch your leg, gasping and rolling around on the floor in pain.
Victor manages to escape, he quickly makes his way towards you. You start scooting away from him but he manages to snatch your ankle and drag you to the backdoor.
"No! NO! FRANK! FRANK HELP!" You scream.
Victor quickly drags you out back and pulls out a knife. Your eyes widen, heart racing. Victor wrestles you down, trying to stab your heart.
A few minutes later Frank rushes out back with a gun, he bursts through the door and finds you on top of Victor, knife in his chest. He relaxes, seeing that you were alive and he was dead.
"Hey, we gotta go before cops show up." He says, gently grabbing your arm. You snap out of your daze and nod. He helps you up but you stumble back down to the ground with a moan of pain.
"Dammit." He mutters, he hosts you over his shoulder and quickly escapes the scene.
After a short while he set you down onto a chair in a motel room, you were exhausted and a little delirious from blood loss. He shut the curtains and deadbolted the door before grabbing all the necessary things to patch you up.
"Take your pants off." He instructs.
You looked at him, quietly panting. "Buy me dinner first, jerk..." You mumble.
He rolls his eyes and walks over, grabbing ahold of your waistband. You immerse grab his wrist. "Hey!"
He leans closer, speaking sternly. "You were shot in the leg, I cant exactly roll up your pant leg, it needs to come off."
You relax a little and he pulls down your pants, they were soaked in blood, and so was your leg. You whine quietly in pain and confusion. He grabs alcohol and washes his hands with it, then he pours it on your leg, you immediately yelp and jerk, he holds your leg down.
"Stay still, it'll go better that way."
He cleaned the wound and reached for tweezers. You immediately grabbed his wrist again.
"What are you doing??" You ask in a panic. He sighs, "I have to get the bullet out." He says softly, noticing your fear.
It was a struggle to get you to stay still and not scream while he dug around in your thigh. He kept one hand over your mouth and the other taking the bullet out. You were struggling but he could tell you were trying your best to stay still.
After he packed the wound and bandaged it he sighed with relief and held your face. He looked into your eyes as he spoke.
"You did real good for me, y/n. Its over now, okay?"
You sniffle and nod, shaking. He nods too and stands up. A couple minutes later he looks at the room, one bed. He turns to you.
"Take the bed, I'll sleep on the floor."
You frown.
"I dont want you to do that.. Who knows what's on that floor." You say quietly.
"True."
You smile a little. "Please, Frank? I dont want you sleeping on the floor after everything you did for me."
He thought it over for an hour, considered sleeping on the floor, but then got worried about you. He groaned in annoyance with himself and climbed in.
"Stay on your side." He says roughly.
You two hid in the motel room for a couple of days, he changed your bandages and brought food. It was boring, musty, but it was safe. You both chatted a lot, he worked on finding a safe house somewhere, even though the men that were after you were dead.
One night you were back in that box. 6ft underground.
"Let's me out! Help! Help me please!"
Frank was back in the dining room, in the chair.
"No no! No no no please!"
You both woke up with a gasp, you more than him since yours was recent. You started to breathe fast and leaned over to Frank. Without realizing it, he wrapped an arm around you and pulled you close, slowly calming down.
You woke up in the morning under his arm, he was already awake. He glanced down at you.
"Hey." He says quietly.
"...hi.." You mutter.
It was a quiet morning, neither of you acknowledging last night/this moring.
After one more day, Frank secured a safe house. He helped you into the car and you drove the 3 hours to get there. The ride was silent, but then he spoke up.
"I lost my family too." He started.
You immediately paid attention, I guess he thought the time was right now.
"They were all killed infront of me, and it was my fault. Thats why I wake up during the night like that."
You frown softly.
"Im sorry, Frank." You say.
"Yea me too. Thats why I took you in, I felt bad."
"So you were married?"
"Mhm."
After another hour you arrived at a small cabin, it was old but cozyish. Frank helped you inside and set you on the couch, he looked around the place.
"I had a friend stock it with everything we need for now. There's some clothes for you and a shower."
You look down at your leg. "I dont know if I can make it in the shower."
He frowns. "Right.."
A week later.
He walked into the kitchen, seeing you standing well on your own.
"Look at you walking, leg doing better?"
You nod with a smile. "Thanks to you."
He smiles a tiny bit. "Thanks to me? What did I do?"
"I dunno... save my life like 3 times?"
He chuckles, taking a few steps closer.
"Guess I did."
He watched as you stared up at him, this girl he randomly met and saved multiple times. You didnt feel like much of a stranger anymore.
"Cmere." He mutters.
You look at him in confusion and lean towards him. He grabs your face gently and pulls you into a kiss. Your eyes widen but you dont push him away, you lean on him, taking the weight off your leg.
He pulls away slightly. "I live a dangerous life, y/n."
"I know, so do I basically." You say.
He chuckles and leans back into the kiss, holding your with his fingers tangled in your hair. ٠࣪⭑

The winter air was harsh at night, biting through Peter Parker's reinforced suit. His breath coming out frosted in the frigid New York night as he perched on a rooftop overlooking the city he'd saved countless times. Below, life continued without him.
The past hour had been spent tracking down a trio of car thieves who'd made the mistake of leaving a mess behind. With the criminals webbed up for the police to find, Peter found himself pausing to catch his breath, the cold seeping into his bones despite the suit's insulation.
His enhanced senses picked up everything: the distant wail of approaching sirens coming to the scene, the crunch of snow on sidewalks below, and the muffled conversations of people hurrying through the streets to escape the biting wind.
That's when he heard it—the sound of someone stumbling, followed by a soft curse. From his vantage point, he saw a figure emerge from a trendy bar on the street corner. Even from several blocks away, Peter's enhanced senses caught the slur in her words as she fumbled for her phone, nearly tripping over a snow-covered curb.
Something about her seemed familiar. He dropped silently to a lower rooftop, then to the ground behind a dumpster, careful not to make a sound in the freshly fallen snow. As he stepped from the shadows to get a clearer look, his breath caught in his throat.
It was Y/n.
Their shared history went as far back at Midtown High School. She'd been his classmate, his chemistry partner, and a member of the academic decathlon with him. She was there for it all— for Washington DC, the Europe trip, and the Statue of Liberty.
They'd even shared a kiss before the spell. It was a fleeting moment of warmth that now burned like an ember in the cold emptiness of his mind. Something that he remembered every day and something that she has no recollection of.
"Shit," her cursing drew him back to reality. She shivered dramatically, hugging her thin jacket tighter around herself.
Behind her, two men stumbled out of the bar, laughing loudly to themselves and clearly drunk out of their minds. Peter became suddenly alert. She dug through her purse in search for her phone.
"Oh, come on." She fussed again. "Where is it?"
The two men noticed her struggling. "Need some help there, sweetheart?"
She tried to wave them away, but her movements were clumsy. "No... I'm fine."
"Come on, let us help you home," the other man insisted, coming around to her other side. He unexpectedly grabbed her arm.
"Hey, let go of me!" She panicked. "I said I'm fine."
Without hesitation, Peter swung closer to the group and landing silently on the ground not far from them. He stepped into the light beaming down from the street light, making his presence known.
"Hey, fellas," Peter called out, making his voice sound deeper, more confident or more intimidating. "We got a problem here?"
Both men stumbled back, obviously startled to see Spider-Man coming out of the shadows. They quickly let go of her and took a few steps back.
"Whoa, it's Spider-Man!" one exclaimed.
Peter narrowed his eyes at them.
The men exchanged nervous glances. "Hey, man, we were just helping her out."
"I think you should leave the saving to me. It's kind of my job," Peter replied. "Now why don't you run along?"
The men scurried away without another word, leaving the two of them alone in the cold night air. She stared at him, wide-eyed and swaying slightly. He held out a hand in concern.
"Are you okay?" Peter asked gently.
"What... what are you doing here?" She sounded a little scared, maybe a little wary of him.
"Just patrolling," he replied softly. "You seem like you've had better nights."
"I... I think so." She confessed with tears threatening to fall down her cheeks. The wind caused her to shiver. "I...I wanna go home."
"Alright," Peter agreed. He placed his hands on his hips. "Where do you live?"
"Brooklyn Heights," she mumbled. "Third floor walk-up."
"Then let's get you home." There was a hint of a smile in his tone. He offered his hand to her.
Glancing down and contemplating his offer, Y/n hesitated only for a moment before taking his hand. He eased her closer to him, gently wrapping his arm around her waist.
"Hold on tight," Peter encouraged.
The city was a smear of neon and shadow as they web-slung through the canyons of buildings. She kept her face tucked against his shoulder, feeling incredibly nauseous from the combination of swinging and the alcohol mixed in her system.
Despite the cold, her body was a warm, slightly dead weight in his arms. He webbed them through blocks of nighttime city traffic, drawing closer to their final destination.
They landed softly in front of her apartment building. She almost lost her balance initially, but Peter kept her upright with a firm hand on her waist.
"I don't think— " she swallowed the vomit that threatened to come up. "Swinging and alcohol mix very well."
Peter couldn't help but smile behind the mask. "I'll keep a note of that."
They climbed the three flights of narrow, creaking stairs. They could hear what was going on behind closed doors because the walls were so thin— a couple fighting, a television program playing an old rerun episode, and music thumping from a party on the first floor.
Coming to the third floor, Y/n fumbled with her purse again to find her house keys. Peter stood awkwardly by her door, not quite sure what to do with his hands and promptly choosing to just hold them.
"Any roommates home?" Peter wondered, already secretly knowing that she'd been living with Ned and MJ since they got accepted into MIT.
"Ned's with his grandma," she claimed, entirely focused on her purse. "MJ's... doing boyfriend things. They're gone 'til tomorrow."
She dumped the contents of her purse onto the welcome mat—lip balm, a crumpled receipt, three pennies, and a set of keys with a beat-up MIT keychain.
"Ah ha," she exclaimed in success. She grabbed them off the floor. "Here," she said, pressing them into his gloved hand.
With Peter unlocking the door, Y/n quickly gathered her items from the floor. She stood back up straight and swayed slightly, feeling the effects of the alcohol heavily coursing through her system.
"Woah," she recovered.
The apartment was exactly as he'd pictured: small, cluttered, and alive. There were books stacked in precarious towers on the floor, a drooping fern hung in the window, and the fridge was covered in photos of people he didn't recognize. He took it all in.
"Think you can handle it from here?" Peter asked.
In response, Y/n moved deeper into the apartment, misjudged the distance to the side table, and sent a ceramic lamp crashing to the floor. It shattered with a definitive crack.
"Or...not," Peter sighed.
"Oh, man," she winced, staring at the broken pieces. "I really liked that lamp."
"Here, let me just..." Peter eased her over to the couch carefully so she could avoid the broken pieces of the lamp. He helped her down onto the couch, letting her rest for a second. "There, bet that's better."
"These shoes are killing me," she muttered, gesturing to the high heels she'd worn.
Peter knelt, his knee pressing into the worn rug. He worked the tiny buckle on one shoe, then the other, his fingers surprisingly deft in the suit. He slipped them off her feet, revealing the red indentations the straps had left on her skin.
Without thinking, he gently took one of her feet in his gloved hands. His thumbs pressed lightly into her arch, working in slow, deliberate circles.
The sound of a soft contented sigh caused Peter to freeze for a second. The intimacy of the gesture suddenly hitting him. He could feel the delicate bones of her foot, the warmth of her skin even through the reinforced fabric of his gloves. He slowed his movements.
"Oh my god," she breathed, her head lolling back against the couch cushions. "You're a superhero and you give foot rubs? That's just unfair."
He cleared his throat and gently set her foot down. "Just trying to help," he said, his voice a little rough.
"It did," she agreed and wiggled her toes. She stood abruptly. "Now this dress... it's trying to kill me."
Peter stood, fully expecting her to ask for privacy. Instead, Y/n struggled to reach the zipper behind her back. She fumbled around until her fingers eventually found it. "I need to change," she declared, her voice determined.
Peter's eyes widened behind his lenses as she began pulling the dress down over her shoulders. "Whoa, wait—" he said, spinning around to face the wall so fast he almost lost his balance. "Maybe I should step outside."
"No, no, it's fine!" she insisted, her voice muffled by the fabric. "It'll just take a second. Don't be weird."
Peter stood rigidly with his back to her, listening to the sounds of fabric rustling and a series of frustrated grunts. He listened closely, half expecting to hear the fabric hit the floor, but it never did. She let out an annoyed groan.
"Stupid, overpriced dress," she whined. "The zipper must be broken. It's stuck."
"Are you okay?" Peter asked, the words out before he could stop them.
"No," she said, her voice small and defeated. "I can't get it off."
Peter squeezed his eyes shut. "Do you… need help?"
A long pause. "Yes," she whispered.
Peter took a steadying breath and turned around, fixing his gaze on a water stain on the ceiling. He kept his hands up, not wanting to overstep or make her uncomfortable.
"Where is it stuck?" Peter questioned.
"Right here," she said, her fingers brushing against his gloved hand as she guided it to a spot on her lower back. He could feel the heat of her skin through the thin fabric of the dress.
With the care of a bomb disposal expert, he worked the tiny metal teeth free from where they'd caught on a seam. He helped her pull the dress the rest of the way off, his eyes falling to the beautiful woman who stood in front of him.
"There," he said, his voice rougher than he intended. "Done."
"Thanks" she whispered.
Retreating to the bedroom, Y/n put away her dirty clothes and searched for a pair of pajamas to change into. Peter, wanting to respect her privacy, stood in the doorway and kept his back turned to her.
He heard the soft rustle of her bra coming off, then the sound of her underwear hitting the floor. His entire body went rigid. He kept his eyes glued ahead of him, his breathing shallow. He heard the soft sigh of cotton as she pulled on the pajamas, then the heavy thud of her flopping backward onto what he assumed was her bed.
"Okay," she murmured, her voice thick with sleep. "All decent."
Peter slowly turned around. She was lying in her bed, the covers pulled up to her chin, her eyes already closed. He walked over to the bed, his movements silent. He gently took the edge of the duvet and pulled it up higher, tucking it snugly around her shoulders. His fingers brushed against her collarbone, and she sighed in her sleep, a small, contented sound.
"Stay?" she murmured, her voice barely audible. "Please?"
"Okay," Peter agreed.
He stood there for a long moment, watching the gentle rise and fall of her chest. The simple act of tucking her in felt more intimate, more dangerous, than any fight he'd ever been in. He wanted to stay.
God, he wanted to stay.
After ten minutes, when her breathing had evened out into the deep rhythm of sleep, he made his decision. He quietly stood up, walked to the door, and locked it from the outside, slipping the key under the mat.
He swung back into the night, the city lights blurring into a watercolor painting through the tears he refused to let fall. He wasn't just leaving a drunk girl in her bed. He was leaving behind the ghost of a life he could never have, a reminder that Peter Parker was just as much a disguise as Spider-Man ever was.
The morning light filtering through her bedroom window felt like knives stabbing directly into her brain. She groaned, rolling over and burying her face in her pillow. Every throb of her headache was a drumbeat, narrating just how many poor decisions she'd made last night.
"What time is it?" she mumbled into the pillow.
"Time for you to get up and face the consequences," a familiar, dry voice replied.
MJ.
She slowly pushed herself up on her forearms, wincing at the light from the window. "Consequences? The only consequence I'm facing is the fact that my mouth tastes like something died."
Ned appeared in her doorway, holding a mug of coffee. "Here, this might help. Though I'm not sure anything can help with the level of stupidity you achieved last night."
Y/n accepted the mug gratefully, taking a cautious sip. "What are you talking about?"
They exchanged a look. "You don't remember?" MJ asked.
She shook her head, so Ned explained it all. "You went out drinking alone which is breaking rule one. Then you didn't text us. So we come home this morning to find your front door locked from the outside and a shattered lamp on the floor."
She frowned, trying to piece together the previous night. She remembered the events leading up to her going to the bar and her ordering a couple drinks. Everything after her fourth tequila was a hazy, impressionist painting.
"I think... I think Spider-Man brought me home," she said slowly, the memory fragment coming into focus.
Ned was suddenly very alert. MJ's eyebrow shot up. "Spider-Man? As in, our friendly neighborhood webslinger?"
Y/n nodded, a small smile playing on her lips despite her hangover. "He was so... gentle. And strong. He swung me home."
Ned snorted, a puff of air escaping his lips. "Right. And I'm secretly the Hulk."
"I'm serious!" She insisted, her voice gaining conviction. "He saved me from some creeps outside the bar, then escorted me all the way home. He was very helpful."
"Let me guess," MJ said, crossing her arms. "He helped you change, too?"
Glancing down at her pajamas, Y/n felt the blush rising to her cheeks. "The zipper on my dress was stuck. He helped me get out of it," she recalled.
Ned's eyes widened. "Whoa, okay, that's... a detail."
"It wasn't like that!" Y/n protested. "He didn't even look. He faced the wall the whole time."
"Uh-huh," MJ said, her expression a perfect mask of disbelief. "And I suppose he also tucked you in, fluffed your pillows, and read you a bedtime story?"
She fell silent, trying to remember. The memory was fuzzy, but she thought she remembered the feeling of a blanket being pulled snugly around her shoulders.
"It sounds crazy, I know," she finally said. "But it felt so real."
MJ sighed, her skepticism softening into concern as she sat on the edge of her friend's bed. "Look, we're not mad you had a bad day. We're worried. You scared us. If something had actually happened..."
"Nothing did," Y/n insisted. "Because he was there."
"Okay, let's play devil's advocate," Ned said, finally setting the coffee down on her nightstand. "Say we believe you. Why would Spider-Man personally escort you home and help you into pajamas?"
"I don't know," Y/n admitted. "Maybe he patrols near the bar? Maybe he saw I was in trouble?"
"Or maybe," Ned chimed in, "some guy in a really good Halloween costume saw a drunk girl and an opportunity."
She shook her head. "No, it was him. I'd know him anywhere."
"Well, whoever it was, they got you home safe," MJ conceded, though her tone was still doubtful. "That's something, I guess. But the locked door is weird."
Her two roommates stood to their feet and began heading towards the door. She turned her head to stare out her bedroom window, admiring the sight of city buildings and wondering if he was somewhere out there.

Your chest feels like it's constricting every time you move, your limbs aching and groaning with every sudden movement.
Everything hurts.
The battlefield stretches for miles, painted in smoke and fire and broken metal. The sky itself seems wounded, split apart by ships burning as they fall back toward the earth.
Around you—
Screams.
Orders.
The crackle of energy weapons.
Someone is crying. Someone else is begging.
You can't tell who anymore.
Your sword hangs limp at your side, suddenly far too heavy to lift.
Across the ruined plain, you see Steve drop to one knee. Thor is staring at his empty hands. Natasha's face has gone completely white.
"…What…" The word barely leaves your lips. Thanos stands in the distance. Motionless. The Infinity Gauntlet hangs scorched and smoking from his arm. The stones are dim. His fingers are still spread from the snap.
"No…" The wind changes. You don't understand it at first. A strange current sweeps across the battlefield, carrying gray ash into the air. Then someone screams. You turn. Bucky Barnes looks down at his own hand. It flakes away beneath his fingertips. Like burnt paper. Steve lunges toward him.
"Bucky—" But he can't hold onto smoke. Within seconds… He's gone. Nothing remains but drifting ash.
"No…" Another scream. Sam. Gone.
Someone shouts Wanda's name.
Someone else yells for T'Challa.
The battlefield erupts into chaos.
"No, no, no…" You stumble forward. This isn't happening. This can't—
Movement catches your eye.
Peter. He's running toward you. Your heart leaps.
"Peter!" His mask is already off.His eyes are huge. Terrified. He runs and runs and runs- trying to reach you - until he can't anymore.
Until his legs fade to dust beneath him and he falls, face first onto the ground.
"No !" You screech, your heart jumping into your throat. you reach him just as his face starts to come apart like ash.
"No, no, no, Peter, please." You choke on a sob, looking up. "Tony ! Tony, help !" Your own tears start immediately.
"I don't wanna go." He starts crying. "I don't know what's happening." You pull him tighter.
"I've got you." His body trembles against yours. He looks at his hands. Ash drifts from his fingertips.
You grip him harder.
His fingers clutch desperately at your shoulders.
"I don't wanna go."
"I know."
"I don't wanna go."
"I know."
"I'm sorry." His body begins to come apart in your arms. Not all at once. Slowly. Cruelly. His shoulder dissolves first. Then his arm. You desperately try to hold together someone turning into dust. It doesn't work.
"No!" He looks at you one last time. Eyes wet. Terrified.
"…I'm scared."
Then— He is gone. Your arms close around nothing. Ash slips through your fingers. Silence. You stare at your empty hands.
"No…" Your voice cracks. "No." The tears come all at once. Violent. Uncontrollable. You sink onto your knees in the dirt, clutching the handful of gray ash that slips through your trembling fingers.
"No…" It blows away on the wind. "Peter…" Your entire body folds forward. You sob so hard you can't breathe. Around you, more people disappear. More screams. More ash. The battlefield is ending. The world is ending.
And there is nothing— Nothing— You can do.
A voice comes from behind you.
Soft.
Almost lost beneath the chaos.
"…Baby?" You know that voice. Your heart stops.
Slowly— Too slowly— You turn.
Your husband stands twenty feet away.
His rifle hangs forgotten at his side. He's staring at his own hand. Confused.
"…Frank?" He looks up. Your stomach drops.
Gray ash drifts from the tips of his fingers.
"No." He frowns.
"…Huh." Another piece of him crumbles away. He watches it almost curiously. "…Guess…" His voice catches. "…Guess that ain't good."
"No." You scramble toward him, tripping over broken concrete. "No, no, no, no—" He reaches for you. His hand is already disappearing.
"…Hey."
"No!"
"It's alright."
"It is not alright!" You throw yourself into him. Your arms wrap around his waist. He hugs you back. As tightly as he can. But already… You can feel him becoming lighter. Less solid.
"No." His chin rests on top of your head.
"I'm here."
"You are not allowed to leave me." A sad little smile touches his lips.
"Wasn't plannin' on it." His shoulder begins to dissolve beneath your cheek. You clutch harder. As though you can hold him together by sheer force.
"You promised."
"I know."
"You promised you'd always come home."
"I know." Your tears soak into his shirt.
"I can't do this without you." His remaining hand cups your cheek.
Warm. Familiar. The touch you've known a thousand times.
His eyes glisten.
"I wish…" He swallows. "…God… I wish I had more time."
"Frank, stop it."
"I wanted…" Another piece of him drifts away. "…one more mornin'."
"Stop."
"One more coffee."
"No."
"One more kiss." You kiss him before he can finish. Desperate. Shaking. He kisses you back with everything he has left. When you pull away, half his face is already becoming ash.
"I love you."
"No, no- Frankie."
"I love you."
"Frank—"
"You hear me?"
"Stop!"
"I love you." His voice is fading. "So damn much." His arms weaken around you. You try to hold him up. Instead… He slips through your embrace. Like smoke. Like dust. His fingertips brush yours one last time.
Then— Nothing.
The wind catches him. Carries him away. You collapse forward into empty air. Your hands slam into the dirt where he'd been standing only seconds before.
"No…" The battlefield doesn't stop. The explosions continue. People keep shouting. But for you… Everything has gone silent. You curl around the place where he'd vanished, clutching a handful of ash to your chest as it slips, grain by grain, through your fingers. And for the first time since this war began… You scream.
You don't remember making it back to earth. Back to New York.
Back to the apartment that smells like him, the bed that's still ruffled from when he slept in it last.
You vaguely remember Tony being there.
He's talking to Matt.
At least you think he is.
Their voices reach you like they're underwater.
"…can't leave her alone."
"…she hasn't slept."
"…she hasn't eaten."
"…Tony."
"…I know."
You don't look at either of them. You just stand in the middle of your apartment. Frank's boots are still by the door. One of them tipped over. You stare at it for almost five minutes.
Finally— You kneel. You set it upright.
Then you burst into tears. The funeral never comes. There are no bodies to bury. No caskets. No gravestones. Just photographs. Just names. Just empty chairs. Someone gives you a folded flag anyway. You don't remember who. It sits untouched on the kitchen table for almost a year. The first night, you sleep on Frank's side of the bed.
The second night too. By the third… You stop sleeping altogether. You lie awake listening for the sound of his keys in the lock. For boots in the hallway. For the familiar grunt he'd always make as he shrugged out of his jacket.
Sometimes— For half a second— You swear you hear him.
Your heart leaps. You run to the front door. It's never him. Three weeks after the Snap, Karen brings groceries. You don't answer. She lets herself in with the spare key Frank insisted someone keep. She finds you sitting on the kitchen floor. Still wearing the same sweatshirt you'd worn the day the world ended.
The coffee mug in your hands is empty. Cold.
"…Honey?" You look up.
"…I forgot how to make coffee." Karen kneels beside you. The coffee maker is already full. Ready. You'd just… Forgotten to press the button. She cries harder than you do.
Matt visits every Thursday. He never announces himself. He simply knocks twice. Lets himself in. Makes dinner. Leaves. Some Thursdays, you don't speak. He doesn't mind. He just sits across from you while the apartment echoes with a silence that used to belong to Frank.
Month three.
Steve asks if you'll come back.
"We need everybody." You shake your head.
"No."
"They need you."
"They're dead." His face falls.
"So are we." You close the door. You stop answering your phone. Natasha leaves voicemails anyway. Tony sends texts. Bruce stops by. Rhodey too. Eventually… They stop asking. Not because they've given up. Because they know. Some wounds don't close because someone tells you to keep living. The apartment becomes a museum. Frank's jacket remains hanging by the door. His shaving razor stays beside the sink. His coffee mug never gets washed. The indentation on his side of the mattress slowly fades.
That one hurts the most. You start sleeping there. Not because you want to. Because you can't bear watching it disappear.
Six months.
The nightmares begin. Sometimes Peter is reaching for you. Sometimes Frank. Sometimes both. Every dream ends the same way. Ash slipping through your fingers. You wake up grabbing empty sheets.
One year.
The city has learned to be quiet. There are fewer cars. Fewer lights. Too many empty apartments. The grocery store closes two aisles permanently because there aren't enough customers anymore. Children stop asking where their parents went. They already know. That hurts worse.
You stop being an Avenger. Not officially. You simply… Never come back. Your armor gathers dust. Your communicator dies in a drawer somewhere. The world keeps spinning.
Without you.
Some days… You don't get dressed.
Some days… You forget what day it is.
Some days… You stand in front of the bathroom mirror and think—
It would've been easier if I'd gone too.
The thought frightens you. Not because you want to die. Because you don't care very much whether you wake up tomorrow. There's a difference. It doesn't feel like one.
Year two.
Karen convinces you to walk outside. Just once. The coffee shop on the corner still remembers Frank's order.
"Large."
"Black." The barista starts making it automatically. Then freezes.
"…I'm sorry." You smile. The first genuine smile in nearly two years.
"It's okay." You buy it anyway. You carry it all the way home. You set it on his side of the kitchen table. It goes cold.
Year three.
Steve comes again. This time… He looks hopeful.
"We found something." You don't answer. "There might be a way." Silence. "Time travel." You laugh. Not because it's funny. Because it's cruel.
"You think you can outrun this?"
"We have to try." You shake your head.
"I already watched him die once."
"This would undo that."
"Or I'll watch him die twice." Steve has no answer. When he leaves… The apartment feels even emptier than before.
Year four.
The panic attacks become quieter. More dangerous. They don't make you cry anymore.
Instead… You simply stop. Standing in grocery aisles. At crosswalks. In the shower. You stare into nothing until someone says your name. You forget entire afternoons. Matt notices. He starts staying longer. Neither of you mentions it.
Year five.
The calendar still has Frank's handwriting on it. Dentist - Tuesday. Pick up dry cleaning. Movie night. You never change it. Then… One rainy afternoon…
Tony Stark knocks on your door himself. Not in armor. Just Tony. Older.
More tired. He looks at you for a long moment.
"You look awful."
"So do you."
"Fair." Silence. He doesn't smile.
"I think…" He rubs a hand across his beard. "I think we figured it out." You stare at him blankly.
"What?"
"A way."
"No."
"A real one."
"No."
"We can bring them back."
"No." Tony's brow furrows.
"You don't even know what I'm going to say."
"I know enough."
"You don't believe me."
"I don't believe in miracles anymore." He flinches.
"I don't need you to."
"I watched him turn to dust in my arms." His eyes soften.
"I know."
"I held Peter while he begged me not to let him die."
"I know."
"I buried people who didn't even leave bodies."
"I know."
"My husband disappeared."
"I know."
"My kid disappeared."
"I know."
"My world ended."
"I know." You look away. Voice barely above a whisper.
"I'm tired of hoping." Because hope… Hope is what made you listen for Frank's footsteps every night for months.
Hope is what made you leave his side of the closet untouched.
Hope is what convinced you, for just one impossible second, that every knock at the door might be him.
Hope had become another way to lose him.
Tony doesn't argue. He simply walks farther into the apartment. His eyes land on Frank's boots. Still by the door. Five years later. Exactly where he'd left them. Tony closes his eyes. Then quietly says,
"…I'll bring him home to you, kid." You don't answer. Not because you don't hear him. Because somewhere deep inside yourself- In a place grief buried years ago— A tiny, terrified part of you is suddenly more frightened of hope than it ever was of despair.
Tony leaves.
The apartment falls silent again. You don't call him back. You don't even watch him walk away. The front door clicks shut. And you stand there…
Staring at Frank's boots. Exactly where he'd left them.
You don't join the mission. You don't help build the machine. You don't suit up. You don't answer another phone call. If they truly can change time… You decide you'll find out afterward. You can't survive another promise.
The nightmares get worse. Not louder. Quieter. Some nights Frank doesn't disappear. Instead… He comes home. He drops his keys in the bowl. Calls your name. Wraps his arms around your waist while you're making coffee. You laugh. You kiss him. He asks how your day was. You tell him about Peter. About Karen. About Matt. About absolutely nothing.
It feels…Perfect.
Then— Ash begins falling from his hair. You scream before he even notices.
"Frank—" He looks confused.
"What?" His hand disappears.
"No." His smile falters.
"Baby?"
"No, please—" His face crumbles apart. This time… He isn't even afraid. He simply watches you.
"I'm sorry." Then he's gone.
Every.
Single.
Night.
You stop sleeping in the bed. The dreams are waiting there. Instead you sleep on the living-room floor. Sometimes in the bathtub. Sometimes sitting upright against the wall with a pistol in your lap. If you never really sleep… The dreams can't catch you.
One night… You hear a woman scream.
Real. Not imagined. Outside. Three blocks away. You don't think. You move.
The mugger never sees you coming. One punch. His jaw breaks. He reaches for a knife. You take it away. Break three fingers. Leave him crying in an alley until the police arrive.
When you get home… Your hands are shaking. Not from fear.
For the first time in years… Your mind is quiet. You sleep six straight hours. The next week… It's another scream. Another alley. Another gang. Another fight. Another night without dreams. You begin to understand. Violence doesn't make you happy.
It makes you… Empty.
And empty is infinitely better than drowning. It becomes routine. The city sleeps. You don't. You patrol rooftops. Subway stations. Construction sites. The neighborhoods Frank always insisted on checking twice. You wear no colors. No Avengers insignia. No shield. No emblem.
Just black. Just blades. Just bruises.
The newspapers invent names.
"The Ghost."
"The Widow."
"The Wraith of Hell's Kitchen."
You never read them. Criminals begin whispering. Not because you're theatrical. Because you're efficient. You don't make speeches. You don't threaten. You simply appear. And when it's over… You disappear again.
Matt finds out first. Of course he does. He hears your heartbeat from two rooftops away. Hears the broken ribs. The knife entering someone else's shoulder. The way you stop breathing entirely before you strike.
One night- He lands beside you.
"You need to stop." You keep cleaning blood from your knuckles.
"So stop me." He says nothing. Because he knows. He probably can't. Karen sees you six weeks later. You answer the door with a split lip. Bruised cheek. Fresh stitches across your ribs. She doesn't ask. She already knows.
"You look like him." You freeze.
"What?" She swallows.
"From years ago." Silence. "You look exactly like Frank did." You close the door. You don't speak to her again for three months. The bruises become familiar. The cuts. The broken fingers. The cracked ribs. You patch yourself up the same way Frank used to. Needle. Thread. Whiskey.
Silence.
Sometimes… While sewing your own shoulder closed… You laugh. A small, humorless sound.
"So this is what it felt like." You stop fearing death. Not because you want it. Because it stops feeling important. If someone finally gets lucky… Fine. Maybe you'll see him again.
If they don't… Tomorrow is another rooftop. Another gang. Another night your head stays blessedly quiet. Steve comes looking for you once.
He finds three unconscious traffickers zip-tied to a lamppost. A fourth is coughing blood. You're wiping your knife clean.
"You've changed."
"So has the world."
"This isn't you." You finally look at him. Eyes hollow.
"You don't know who I am anymore."
"I know who Frank would've wanted you to be." That one lands. Hard. You don't answer. You simply walk away. Tony sends Happy. Bruce sends Natasha. Natasha sends Clint. Nobody reaches you.
Not really. You're always somewhere else. Always chasing the next emergency. Because if you're fighting… You're not remembering. If your fists hurt… Your chest doesn't. If your lungs are burning… You're not hearing Peter say,
"I'm scared." You're not feeling Frank dissolve in your arms. Pain has become medicine.
Violence… Anesthesia.
By the time Tony finally calls to say,
"We're ready." Your apartment is almost empty. Frank's boots are still by the door. Everything else… Has been packed away. Not because you've moved on. Because looking at it all finally became impossible. You stand in the doorway for a long time before leaving. Your hand brushes the leather of one boot.
Still dusty. Still waiting. Just like you. You whisper into the silence—
"I hope you're wrong, Tony." Not because you want him to fail. Because you've spent five years teaching yourself how to survive a world without Frank. And somewhere deep down… The idea that he might actually come home feels more terrifying than believing he never could.
-----
The night is quiet. Too quiet.
Hell's Kitchen always sounds different after midnight. Distant sirens. Traffic. Arguments drifting up from the sidewalks. Tonight… Nothing. You stand on the edge of an abandoned warehouse roof, the city spread beneath you in a sea of yellow lights.
Five years. Five years of fighting. Five years of bleeding. Five years of waking up disappointed that you hadn't died in your sleep.
Your suit is torn.
Your knuckles are split open. There's dried blood under every fingernail. Some of it's yours. Most of it isn't. You look down. It's a long way to the pavement. High enough. Probably.
Maybe not.
You don't particularly care. Your fingers loosen around the edge of the rooftop.
"…Frank." The name disappears into the wind. "I'm tired." No answer. Of course not. You laugh. Small. Empty. "You won." Not Thanos. Grief. It won. You close your eyes. One step. That's all it takes. Just—
"Don't." The voice hits you like a gunshot. You spin. Impossible. A man stands in the doorway leading to the roof. Long hair. Metal arm. Blue eyes.
"…Bucky?" He stares at you. Not with confusion. Recognition. Pain. Relief.
"You remember me." You blink.
"…No." He takes one careful step forward. "You…" Your voice catches. "No." His expression crumples.
"I know."
"No." You shake your head harder. "I watched you."
"I know."
"You disappeared."
"I know."
"I watched you turn into dust."
"I know."
"So you're not…" You take another stumbling step backward. "You're not real." His jaw tightens.
"I am."
"No."
"You are."
"No!" Your heel reaches the edge of the building. You don't notice. Bucky does. His entire body goes rigid.
"Don't move."
"I already buried you." His eyes fill.
"You didn't bury anybody."
"I watched you die."
"I know."
"You can't be here." Another careful step.
"I am."
"No!" Another.
"You gotta breathe."
"I'm dreaming."
"No."
"I'm dead."
"No."
"I'm finally dead."
"No." He moves. Fast. Faster than your exhausted body can react. The metal arm hooks around your waist just as your foot slips backward into empty air. You gasp. Suddenly you're no longer falling. You're pinned against a solid chest. Held. Hard. The way someone holds another person when they're terrified of letting go.
"Let me go!" you scream, struggling weakly against him.
"No."
"Let me go!"
"No."
"I have to—I have to be with him- I have to join him-"
"No!" The shout echoes across the rooftops. For a second… Everything stops. His breathing is uneven against your temple. His arms are shaking. Not from effort. From fear. "You don't get to do this."
"I have nothing left! Let me go ! I want to be with my husband!"
"You've got me."
"You were dead!"
"I was."
"You disappeared!"
"I did."
"You—"
"I came back." Silence. You stop fighting. Very slowly… You look up at him. Really look. There's new stubble. A fresh scar near his eyebrow. His heartbeat. You can hear it. Strong. Steady. Real.
"…How?" His throat works.
"Tony." You frown.
"What?"
"He figured it out." Your brows knit together.
"…No."
"He did."
"No."
"We went back."
"No."
"We got the Stones."
"No."
"He snapped." Your stomach drops.
"…Tony?" Bucky closes his eyes.
"He saved everybody." Silence. "But…" His voice breaks. "It killed him." The words don't register. You simply stare.
"He…" You swallow. "…Tony's…" Bucky nods once.
"He saved us.We don't... remember anything. It feels like five minutes ago Thanos did his snap but... it's been five years." The rooftop tilts beneath your feet. You grip the front of his jacket.
"…Peter?"
"Alive." Your breathing catches.
"…Sam?"
"Alive."
"…Wanda?"
"Alive."
"…T'Challa?"
"Alive." Each answer lands like another impossible heartbeat.
"…Frank?" Bucky doesn't answer immediately. Instead… He reaches up with his flesh hand. Very gently… He brushes a tear off your cheek.
"Yeah." One word. That's all it takes. The dam breaks. You fold. Not gracefully. Not dramatically. Your knees simply give out beneath you. A sound tears out of your chest that you've been holding in for five years. You sob. Violently. Your whole body convulses.
"I couldn't—" The words dissolve. "I tried—" Another sob. "I couldn't save them." Bucky lowers himself to the rooftop with you still in his arms. He doesn't try to stop the crying. He just holds on. The way Steve held him after HYDRA. The way someone holds another human being who's forgotten how.
"I know."
"I wasn't there."
"I know."
"I didn't believe Tony."
"I know."
"I wanted…" You choke on the confession. "…I wanted to die." Bucky's grip tightens.
"I know."
"I almost—"
"I know."
"I couldn't do it anymore."
"I know." His own voice starts shaking.
"None of us blamed you."
"I blamed me."
"I know." You cry until there are no tears left. Until you're just shaking. Breathing in broken little gasps against his shoulder. Minutes pass. Maybe longer. Eventually… Bucky speaks again. Very quietly.
"He's been looking for you." You don't respond. "The first thing he asked was where his wife was." Your breath catches. "He thought…" Bucky smiles sadly. "He thought maybe Thanos had gotten to you. He has no idea how long it's been."
It hurts.
God… It hurts.
You stare out across the city. The sunrise is beginning to stain the horizon gold.
"I don't…" Your voice is tiny. "I don't know how to see him." Bucky looks at you.
"What?"
"I spent five years learning how to survive without him. He thinks it's only been a few seconds." Another tear slips free. "What if…" You can't finish. "What if he looks at me and doesn't recognize me anymore?" Bucky's expression breaks.
"He'll recognize you."
"I've changed."
"So has he."
"I became…" You look down at your blood-covered hands."…something awful." Bucky reaches over. Without hesitation… He takes one of those stained hands in both of his.
"I know exactly what it's like…" He squeezes gently. "…to think the person you love will only see the monster." Your eyes lift to his.
"And?" A small smile.
"The people who love us…" His gaze drifts toward the rising sun. "…they usually see the parts we forgot were still there." He stands first. Then offers you his hand. Not pulling. Just waiting.
"You wanna go see your husband?" Your lips part. For the first time in five years… Hope doesn't feel like a knife. It feels terrifying. Fragile. Beautiful. With trembling fingers… You place your hand in his.
"…Yeah." Your voice cracks around the word. "So bad." Bucky helps you to your feet. The way to the compound feels surreal. Almost like a sick version of deja vu.
Five years since you stepped foot in this building.
Five years since everything fell apart.
You half expect Tony to greet you, arms wide open. But he doesn't.
The halls are brighter than you remember.
Cleaner.
Someone rebuilt this place while you were busy trying to survive. You don't recognize half the faces that pass you. Some of them smile. Some of them stop dead when they see you. They've heard stories.
The Ghost. The woman who refused to stop fighting after half the world disappeared. None of them say a word. Bucky stays beside you. Never touching. Just close enough that if your knees give out again…
He'll catch you.
"You alright?" he asks quietly. You almost laugh.
"No." He nods.
"I figured." The elevator doors slide open. The medical wing.
Clint is already waiting.
He looks older. More gray at his temples. More tired around the eyes. But he smiles the second he sees Bucky. Then he sees you. The smile disappears.
"…Oh." His eyes travel over the old scars. The fresh ones. The bruises blooming across your knuckles. The exhaustion carved permanently into your face. He doesn't ask. He doesn't have to.
"You found her." Bucky nods. "Almost too late."
Clint closes his eyes for one long second. Then—
"He's in here. Peter and the others already went home." Your heart stops. Clint reaches for the door handle.
"You don't have to—"
"I'm ready." You're lying. He knows it. Still… He opens the door. Frank is sitting on an examination table. Bruce has electrodes stuck to his chest. A blood pressure cuff squeezes one arm. Someone has clipped a pulse oximeter to his finger. He's arguing.
"I told ya, I'm fine."
"You were dead for five years."
"I was dead for five seconds."
"You don't actually know that."
"I feel fine." Bruce sighs.
"Frank—" Then… Frank looks toward the door. His entire world stops.
"…Baby?" You freeze. He's… Exactly the same..
Same hair.
Same eyes.
The same tiny scar above his eyebrow from years ago. He looks like he walked out of your apartment yesterday. He looks… Home.
Frank doesn't even think. He rips the pulse oximeter off his finger. The heart monitor leads come away with it. Bruce opens his mouth.
"Fra—" Too late. Frank is already moving. He crosses the room in three long strides. Then he's there. His hands cup your face.
Warm. Solid. Real.
"Oh, thank God." He laughs. Actually laughs.
"I thought—" His voice breaks. "I thought maybe he got you." His forehead presses against yours. "I've been askin' everybody where my wife is." He smiles through wet eyes. "There you are." He pulls you into him. Hard. Like he always does. Like he's terrified you'll disappear too. His arms wrap around your back. He buries his face against your neck. "I gotcha."
Silence.
He waits for you to hug him back. You don't. Not because you don't want to. Because… You can't. Your arms hang uselessly at your sides. Your body refuses to believe he's real. Frank notices almost immediately. He leans back just enough to see your face. The smile slips.
"…Baby?" You stare at him. Studying every line. Every freckle. The way his beard hasn't grown in. The warmth coming off his skin. Your fingers rise slowly. Almost fearfully. You touch his cheek. Your hand trembles violently.
"…You're warm." He gives a confused little laugh.
"Yeah…"
"You…" Your thumb traces the scar over his eyebrow. "…You're really here."
"I'm here." Your breathing begins to shake.
"No…" His smile falters.
"What?"
"You can't…" You shake your head. "This isn't…" Your chest caves inward. "I buried you." Frank's brow furrows.
"What?"
"I buried you." His confusion deepens.
"What're you talkin' about?"
"You were gone." His eyes flick toward Bucky. Then Bruce. Neither of them says anything. Understanding begins to dawn. Slowly. Painfully. He looks back at you.
"…How long?" You can't answer. Bucky does.
"Five years." Frank goes completely still.
"…What?"
"To them…" Bucky says quietly. "It was five years." Frank looks back at you. Really looks. Notices the scars. The weight you've lost. The dark circles beneath your eyes. The way your hands won't stop shaking.
"…Baby." His voice is barely there. "What happened?" That question— That stupid, innocent question— Breaks the last thing holding you together. You throw yourself against him. This time your arms wrap around him so tightly he actually stumbles backward a step. A sob tears out of you.
Violent. Animal.
"I tried." Your fists bunch in the back of his shirt. "I tried so hard." Frank's arms lock around you immediately.
"Hey." He stares at you. Not speaking. Just … Looking. Looking at the woman who used to steal fries off his plate. Who laughed too loudly. Who danced barefoot in the kitchen while making coffee. Who kissed him every morning before work.
She's still here.
But she's buried under five years of grief.
Five years… That, to him… Never happened.
"Hey, mama, c'mere." he whispers, pulling you in, lips pressed to your temple as you sob. You hear the door close softly behind you, telling you Bruce and Bucky have left the room- and your whole body just gives up.
You go crashing to the floor, sobbing hard as Frank follows, tucking you against his chest.
"I'm sorry." You cry. "I'm so sorry." Frank shushes you, rocking you back and forth.
"Shh..Shh.. what are you sorry for , pretty girl ?"
"I-I was gonna-" You hiccup."I was gonna try to join you."
Frank stills. Not physically. Physically, he keeps rocking you, one broad hand cradling the back of your head, the other rubbing slow circles between your shoulder blades. But inside…
Everything stops.
"…What?" Your face disappears deeper into his chest.
"I couldn't…" You can't catch your breath. Every word is ripped apart by sobs. "I couldn't do it anymore." His arms tighten instinctively.
"Hey…"
"I tried so hard. I fought." Your fingers clutch at the front of his shirt like you're afraid he'll disappear again. "God, Frankie, I fought so hard." His chin rests on top of your head.
"I have no doubt you did."
"No…" You shake your head violently. "You don't." Because he can't. How could he? To him, he'd kissed you goodbye. Then Thanos snapped. Now you're here. Three heartbeats later. He never lived the years in between.
"I waited," you whisper. His brow furrows.
"What?"
"I waited for months." Your voice has gone distant now. Like you're watching someone else's memories. "I kept your coffee mug by the sink." Frank's throat tightens. "I washed your clothes because…" A broken laugh escapes you. "…because they smelled like you." His eyes close. "I couldn't let the smell go." Your shoulders shake harder. "I slept on your side of the bed."
"You…"
"I thought…" Another hiccupping breath. "Maybe if I slept where you slept…" You squeeze your eyes shut. "…I'd dream about you." Frank's vision blurs.
"…Baby."
"I talked to you." Every word lands like another knife. "Every morning." His hand cups the back of your head. "I'd make coffee." Another sob. "And I'd tell you about my day." He can't speak. "I'd leave your boots by the door." Your voice cracks completely. "…In case you came home." Frank lets out the smallest, most broken sound. "I never stopped waiting." Silence. Then— "It got harder." You stare somewhere past him. Past the room. Past today. " God, Frank, it got so hard. I stopped hearing your voice." His heart splinters. "I couldn't remember your laugh exactly."
"Baby…"
"So I started listening to old recordings." Your breathing catches. "Over." A swallow. "And over." Another. "And over. I was scared…" Your lips tremble. "…that I'd forget you." Frank buries his face in your hair.
"You never would've."
"I almost did."
"No."
"I remembered pieces." You smile through tears. "The way you'd steal my fries." A watery laugh. "The way you snored."
"I do not snore."
"You absolutely snore."
"I breathe aggressively." Despite everything… You laugh. It's tiny. Broken. But it's there. Frank almost cries harder hearing it. Then your smile disappears.
"And then…" Your voice empties. "People stopped saying your name." His chest aches. "They stopped asking how I was. They thought…They thought I was better." He shakes his head. "They were wrong."
"Sweetheart-"
"I smiled." You shrug helplessly. "I went grocery shopping. I paid bills. I washed dishes. I even laughed sometimes." Your eyes meet his. "But every single day…" A tear slips free. "…I wanted to come home to you." Frank's face crumples. Your hand reaches up, cupping his cheek. "So I started fighting." He notices your knuckles again. The scars. The old fractures that healed crooked.
"You see these?" He nods slowly. "I stopped caring if I got hurt." His stomach twists. "I hoped somebody would eventually be faster."
"No…"
"I hoped I'd lose."
"No."
"I wanted somebody to kill me." His entire body jerks.
"No."
"So I wouldn't have to do it myself." The room goes deathly quiet. Frank just… Looks at you. At the woman he loves more than breathing. Who'd spent five years slowly disappearing. Because he'd disappeared first. His eyes overflow.
"Oh, my love…" His voice is shattered.
"Tonight.. I found the tallest building. I was going to-"
"I'm so sorry." You blink.
"What?"
"I'm sorry."
"You didn't—"
"I left you."
"You couldn't help it."
"I know." His thumb wipes away another tear. "But I still left you."
"You didn't choose—"
"I know." His forehead presses against yours. "I know." He takes a shaky breath.
"But while I was gone…" His voice breaks completely. "…you carried all of me by yourself."
You start crying again.
"I was so tired. I didn't want to be brave anymore."
"I know."
"I didn't want to wake up anymore. I missed you."
"I know." The words come out almost like prayers now. Small. Fragile. You curl closer, until you're practically folded into him.
"I kept thinking…" You sniff hard. "…if I could just hold you one more time…" Frank wraps both arms around you so tightly that you can barely breathe.
"I'm here."
"I know."
"I'm not going anywhere." Another nod.
"I know."
"I mean it." His hand slides into your hair. "You hear me?" You close your eyes.
"I hear you."
"I ain't leavin' again." His voice shakes. "I don't care if I gotta haunt God himself." A tiny, watery laugh escapes you. "I'll find my way back." Another laugh. Smaller. Realer.
"I believe you." He kisses your forehead. Then your temple. Then the corner of your eye where tears keep collecting.
"So listen to me now." He waits until you look at him. Really look. "If you ever get that tired again…" His thumb strokes your cheek. "If you ever think about doing that again…" His own tears spill freely now. "You tell me." You swallow.
"I couldn't."
"You do."
"I don't wanna burden you." His expression twists.
"You are never a burden."
"I—"
"Never." He says it with such certainty that it steals the next apology from your mouth. "I carried guns." He brushes your hair behind your ear. "You carried grief. I think yours was heavier." You shake your head.
"No." He smiles sadly.
"We're done carrying things alone." Your lips tremble.
"…Promise?" He doesn't hesitate.
"Promise." He hooks his little finger around yours, the way he'd done years ago over stupid things like remembering milk from the grocery store. It almost makes you laugh.
"You still do that?"
"Always worked before." You curl your pinky around his. The gesture feels impossibly small. Impossibly normal. After five years of surviving. It feels like the first piece of home you've touched. Frank presses one last kiss to your knuckles. Then gathers you back into his arms. This time, neither of you says anything. You simply sit together on the medical room floor, holding each other while the impossible truth slowly settles between you.

Summary: tony helps you through a panic attack. [wc 985] [ao3]
Warnings: panic attacks, angst, flufff
Request: Anonymous asked: Hi! I have a request for a Tony Stark fic where Tony receives a notification from FRIDAY saying that the reader is having a panic attack in their room. Worried, he makes his way over and finds the reader curled up in the corner, hyperventilating. He knows firsthand what it's like to deal with panic attacks, so he helps the reader through it while they tell him they think they're a bad person and shouldn't be on the team. Thank you!!
FRIDAY doesn’t use unnecessary urgency. That’s one of the first things Tony programmed into her—no dramatic alerts unless something is actually wrong.
So when his phone buzzes mid-meeting and the screen flashes:
Miss Y/N is experiencing acute distress. Heart rate elevated. Breathing irregular.
Tony is already standing up.
“Yeah,” he says, too calm, already walking out. “Meeting’s over. I’ve got something that actually matters.”
Steve calls after him, “Tony—what happened?”
Tony doesn’t slow down. “Panic attack,” he says. “She’s alone.”
And just like that, no one argues.
The hallway to your room feels too long. Tony hates that part—how time stretches when your brain is already halfway somewhere else. Somewhere worse. Somewhere loud.
He knows the feeling. Too well.
“FRIDAY,” he says under his breath as he approaches your door.
“Yes, Boss?”
“Talk to me.”
A beat.
“She is on the floor,” FRIDAY says softly. “Corner of the room. Stimulus response indicates hyperventilation and self-soothing failure.”
Tony swallows once. “Yeah,” he mutters. “Got it.”
He knocks once. No answer. He doesn’t wait for one. “Hey,” he says gently as he steps inside. “Hey, kid—FRIDAY told me you were having a rough time.”
The room is dim. And there you are. Curled in the corner like you’ve tried to make yourself smaller than the space allows. Arms wrapped tight around yourself. Breathing too fast. Too shallow. Like your lungs forgot the instructions.
Tony doesn’t move closer right away. He just lowers himself slowly to your level. Not towering. Not crowding. Just there. “Okay,” he says softly. “I need you to look at me, alright? Just for a second.”
Your eyes flick up. Barely. Unfocused. Panicked.
“That’s it,” Tony nods. “Hi. It’s me. I’m not mad, I’m not disappointed, and I’m definitely not here to make it worse.”
Your breath catches again.
He keeps his voice steady. Familiar. “Can you hear me?”
A shaky nod.
“Good. That’s good.” He exhales slowly through his nose, modeling it. “Alright, I’m gonna do something real fun and annoying. I’m gonna make you breathe like me.”
A flicker of confusion. Good. Confusion is better than spiraling.
“Watch me,” he says, pointing subtly to his chest. He inhales slowly. Deliberately. Then out. Long. Patient. “Like that,” he says. “Not fast. Not big. Just… matching me.”
You try. It comes out uneven. He doesn’t react. Doesn’t rush you. Just keeps going.
“Good,” he says quietly. “That’s it. No rush. You’re not in a race. You’re just… breathing in a really inconvenient software update.”
A tiny, broken laugh slips out of you.
He counts that as progress.
After a minute, your breathing starts to slow. Not perfect. But better.
Tony shifts slightly—still not too close, but closer than before. “There you go,” he says softly. “You’re doing it.”
Your hands are still shaking. Your voice, when it comes, is small. “…I think I’m a bad person.”
Tony goes still. Not surprised. Not dismissive. Just… listening. “Yeah,” he says finally, gently. “That’s the panic talking.”
You shake your head quickly. “No, I— I mess things up. I shouldn’t be here. I don’t belong on the team. I’m just— I don’t know why you all—”
“Hey,” Tony cuts in softly. Not sharp. Just firm enough to catch you. “Hey. Slow down.”
You press your forehead against your knees again, like you’re trying to disappear. “I shouldn’t be here,” you repeat.
Tony sighs quietly. Then shifts closer just a little more, careful not to overwhelm you. “Okay,” he says. “I’m gonna stop you right there.” A pause. “I’ve known a lot of people who think they’re ‘bad.’ You know what they all have in common?”
You don’t answer.
He doesn’t expect you to. “They’re wrong,” he says simply.
You let out a shaky breath. “That’s not—”
“Not helpful?” he supplies.
“…yeah.”
Tony nods. “Yeah, I figured.” He leans back slightly, giving you space but staying present. “So let me try this instead,” he says. “You don’t get to decide your worth while your brain is actively throwing a chemical tantrum.” A beat. “That’s like letting a drunk guy pick your career.”
A small, reluctant huff of air that might almost be a laugh.
“There we go,” Tony says softly, noticing it immediately. “That one. Hold onto that.”
You’re quieter now. Still curled up. But not disappearing quite as hard.
“…I keep messing up,” you admit.
Tony nods once. “Yeah. Welcome to literally everyone I’ve ever met.”
That gets another small breath of laughter out of you.
He tilts his head slightly. “You know what I see when I look at you?”
You hesitate. “…what?”
Tony doesn’t even blink. “I see someone who shows up anyway,” he says. “Even when their brain is doing the world’s worst TED Talk.” A pause. “I see someone who’s trying. And honestly? That’s kind of my whole criteria for ‘you get to stay.’”
You blink at him. Slowly. Like the words are landing somewhere they don’t usually reach.
Tony exhales, softer now. “And for the record?” he adds. “You don’t get to quit the team just because your brain is being a jerk. That’s not how this works. I signed paperwork. You’re legally stuck with us.”
A faint, shaky smile appears this time. “…that sounds fake.”
“It is,” Tony admits. “But it’s emotionally binding.”
Silence settles again. Not heavy. Just… quieter. Eventually, your breathing evens out more fully. Not perfect. But you’re here. Tony stays where he is, not pushing, not leaving. Just present.
After a while, he says gently, “You wanna tell me what set it off? Or do you just want me to sit here and pretend I’m not terrifyingly good at breathing exercises?”
A pause.
“…just stay.”
Tony nods immediately. “Yeah,” he says. “Okay. That I can do.” And he does. Because whatever you think you are in that moment— Tony Stark’s seen enough storms in people’s heads to know: this one passes.

You put down your phone on the table, sighing. Frankly, you had never been more confused in your life. Across the table in your corner booth, Peter was picking at the corner of the menu. For twenty minutes the two of you had been sitting here, waiting for your friends to show up.
“I think we’ve been stood up by our friends…” you said apprehensively, looking up at Peter. His head snapped up when you spoke as he took in what you said.
“Why would they do that?” he frowned, leaning against the back of the booth.
“I don’t know. But Betty said they were in traffic and Ned said they haven’t left yet. Plus, we walked here from my place and I’m pretty sure they both live closer,” you replied.
In all honesty, you had a rough idea of what was going on. The day prior when Betty had left a cryptic message that she was arranging something to do with Peter. Now, she and Ned have conveniently not shown up. Is that what she meant yesterday?
Peter had a thoughtful expression on his face. Maybe he was putting together the same pieces you were. Who really knew what went on inside the mind of Peter Parker?
“Yeah, I think we got set up.” he finally said, running a hand through his hair. He has really nice hair, you mused.
“I’m seriously gonna murder Betty next time I see her,” you murmured,
“I’ll help you hide the body?” Peter offered, somewhat helpfully.
“Oh what would I do without you Pete?” you smiled. You had a habit of doing that around him.
“Probably get arrested for murder.” He replied, his eyes twinkling as a smile tugged at his face.
“Perhaps,” you shrugged, “Well, what do the third and fourth wheel do when they get ditched?”
“I mean, I can walk you home if you want? Or I guess we could both stay here, and get some lunch?” Peter suddenly seemed very engrossed in the salt packets he was arranging in front of him.
“No!” You said, almost a little too fast to be considered normal. “We should just make the most of it, you know? I’ve heard the fries are great here.”
“Really? Um, cool! Yeah for sure, let’s stay.” Peter replied. The waitress came around and asked them if they were ready to order. You got some kind of sandwich (with fries of course) and Peter had gotten a grilled cheese. You both had decided on sharing a comically large chocolate milkshake.
For a minute, Peter was fiddling with his hands, not touching his food. He spoke up, his voice quieter than it was before.
“I, um, wish this was different,” he said tentatively, like he was admitting a secret of some sort
You raised an eyebrow, looking up from your plate, “What do you mean? Like in the scenario we didn’t get ditched by our friends?” you laughed dryly.
“No, not that,” he started, “Like that we’d be here together not because we were ditched. Just us.” The tips of Peter’s ears had turned pink, and he quickly averted eye contact. He was fidgeting with his sleeves, a typical habit of his whenever he was nervous.
You paused hearing his words. Just us, echoed in your mind, bouncing around your brain. Was this really happening? Did you take an extra melatonin last night and now you were dreaming?
“Please say something..” Peter added. You snapped out of your daze, and blinked at him.
“Is that some convoluted way of asking me on a date?” You finally replied. God, you hoped so. Your stomach twisted thinking about him saying no. The embarrassment alone might drive you to an early grave.
“Um, yes? Look, I’m sorry if that’s weird, and you don’t have to say yes, but I really like you-” Peter began to ramble. You stopped him by reaching across the table and putting your hand on top of his.
“Yes. I will go on a date with you, Peter Parker.” You smiled, no, beamed at the man sitting across from you. You would have no way of knowing, but Peter thought he might faint.
"Wait really?" he said, looking at you like he expected you to laugh in his face at any moment.
"Yes, really." You replied, and you had truly never been happier.

The Avengers always pick up when something is going on with you. Steve just gets the jump on it first. They worriers, especially when it comes to you. They talked about it before a meeting one morning.
“I feel like we should as her what’s going on so we can help her figure out what she has going on.” Steve says.
“That’s a good idea, but we don’t want to bombard her with questions and overwhelm her.” Natasha says.
“Then we talk to her gently and try to get answers out of her that way.” He says.
The Avengers stopped talking when you came into the conference room. You didn’t even notice that they were looking at you till you sat down at the table. You frowned in confusion, wondering why your teammates are looking at you.
“Why are you guys looking at me?” You asked confused.
“We just want to know what’s going on with you is all.” Natasha says.
“Nothing is going on with me.” You lied.
“If there is, you know you can tell us.” Steve says.
“I appreciate you guys being sweet and wanting to help me, but nothing is going on with me. I’m fine.” You lied again. “Can we please just start the meeting?” You asked.
The Avengers weren’t going to bombard you with anymore questions. Not right now at least. They know you’ll open up to them when you’re ready to. Steve, on the other hand, wants to find out what’s going on with you and he’s not going to stop till he knows what it is.
After the meeting, you went to the gym to train for the upcoming mission. That gave Steve an opportunity to go into your bedroom to look for possible clues to what’s going on with you. He made sure that the door was closed before he started looking around your room. Is it wrong of him to go through your things? Yes. He just wants to know what’s going on with you is all. He looks all around your bedroom for possible clues. He looked in your dresser, closet, and under your bed, but didn’t find anything. Then he went over to your nightstand and opened the top drawer to it, finding six envelopes addressed to the Avengers. He takes them out of the nightstand and goes through all of them. He opened the one that’s addressed to him, reading it word for word. It didn’t take him long to realize that what he’s reading is a suicide note. His eyes teared up as he read it.
“No.” Steve mutters quietly to himself.
Steve was so far into the note that he didn’t even hear you come into your bedroom. You were confused as to why he’s in your bedroom. Then you saw him reading the suicide note you wrote him. Your eyes widened and your heart drops. You walked over to him, snatching the suicide notes from him.
“What the hell are you doing in my room?” You asked.
“I was trying to figure out what’s going on with you.” Steve says.
“I already told you and everyone else that I’m fine.” You say.
“Then you and I have very different definitions of the word fine, because from what I read in the suicide note you wrote me, you aren’t fine.” He says.
“I am fine.” You lied once again.
“Stop saying that! You aren’t fine not fine! Just tell me what’s going on so I can help you! I’m your friend and teammate! Talk to me!” He raises his voice without realizing it.
You just stood there without saying a word. Tears began to stream down your face.
“Get out.” You say.
Steve didn’t move. He wanted to know what’s going on with you, but he’s not going to get any answers out of you right now or possibly anytime soon.
“Get out!” You shout, shoving your hands against his chest.
Steve took the hint that time and left your bedroom. You grabbed the door before it closed and stood in the doorway to say something to him.
“If you were truly my friend, you would’ve left me alone until I was ready to talk about it!” You shouted down the hallway.
You slammed your bedroom door, the slam echoing through out the compound. You tossed the six suicide notes on your nightstand and then laid down on your bed, staring up at the ceiling.
———
You haven’t said a word to Steve in days. You only talked to him only if it was work related. Other than that, you don’t talk to him at all. Steve feels guilty about what he did. He knows what he did is wrong. All he wanted to do is figure out what was going on with you so he can help you, but it went into a completely different direction. The Avengers saw you acting even more differently, especially since you weren’t talking to Steve, which left them curious.
“Why isn’t Y/N talking to you?” Natasha asks.
“I did something I shouldn’t have done and now she is pissed off at me.” Steve says.
“What did you do?” Thor asks.
“I may have went into her bedroom and went through her things to figure out what’s going on with her so I can help her.” Steve says.
“That was stupid of you to do.” Tony says.
“Yea, I know that now.” Steve says.
“What did you find?” Clint asks.
Steve stayed silent. How he is supposed to tell the rest of your teammates that you wrote suicide notes that are addressed to them? Actually, it’s not his place to say anything. He knows you’ll tell them when you’re ready to.
“It was something personal.” Is all Steve says.
“How personal?” Bruce asks.
“It’s not my place to say anything. She’ll tell us when she’s ready.” Steve says.
That night, you read all six suicide notes you wrote to the Avengers. While reading those notes, you quickly realized that doing what you have been thinking about doing would devastate them. You can’t just do that to them. They’re your family and best friends. You couldn’t believe that you would even think about doing something like that and leaving them heartbroken. You couldn’t help but break down in tears. After a moment, you managed to pull yourself together and went to Steve’s bedroom to talk to him. He opened the door after you knocked on it.
“Can we talk?” You asked.
“Of course.” Steve says.
Steve steps aside, allowing you to come inside of his bedroom. He closes the door and you two sat down on his bed.
“I know you have questions as to why I wrote those suicide notes and I’ll answer any questions you ask me.” You say.
“All I want to know is why you were planning on- you know?” Steve says.
You took a shaky deep breath before saying anything.
“I just thought if I did do it, the world would be a better place without me in it.” You say, your eyes tearing up.
“No, it wouldn’t.” He says.
“Yes, it would.” You say.
“What’s making you think that?” He asks.
“I’ve done horrible things. The things I’ve done for HYDRA are unforgivable. All of that blood is still on my hands. I’m not sure how much longer I can live with myself knowing what I did for HYDRA.” You say, your voice cracking.
“None of that is your fault. You didn’t have a choice. HYDRA had control of you.” He says softly.
“I still did it.” You say.
Steve gently caresses your cheeks so your focus is on him.
“Listen to me. None of that is your fault. It’s HYDRA’s fault. They had control of you. I know that you would never intentionally hurt or kill anyone.” Steve says.
You broke down in tears. Steve wraps his arms around you, holding you close to him.
“I’m sorry.” You cried, your voice muffled against his chest.
“It’s ok. Everything is going to be ok. I’ll help you get through it.” He says softly.
Your crying went on for a few minutes before you started to calm down. Steve rubbed your back to help you calm down. He said nothing but sweet words to you.
“Can this stay between us? I don’t want everyone else to know yet. I’m not ready to tell them.” You say, your voice a bit hoarse from crying.
“I won’t tell them. You have my word.” Steve says softly.
“Thank you.” You say.
“You don’t have to thank me. I’m more than happy to help you.” He says softly.
You and Steve laid down on his bed. You’re still in his arms. Steve felt you relax in his arms. You began to drift off to sleep.
“Goodnight. I’ll be right here if you need anything.” Steve says softly.
