Itâs the dead of nightânothing but the obscured silhouettes of greenery passing in the dark and the rattling sound of exhaust keeping you conscious. Youâre thirty minutes into this hissing, on its last legs Eagles cassette when Deanâs burner starts ringing off; he cranks the volume knob down before answering. The garbled noise that streams out sounds a hell of a lot like Bobbyâand for that, youâre thankful. After being on the road for a day and a half with no leads, youâre willing to take up anything you can get.
Youâre pleased enough with what you can piece together, something like âbloodbathâ and âninety-mile trip,â until the line goes dead quiet. Dean pulls the screen display away from his ear, just far enough to see that the callâs duration timer is still ticking along. Bobby hasnât hung upâjust⌠hesitant to continue briefing any further. The next intelligible word, in the quick-strung sentence that tumbles out of the speaker: âStanford.â
At that, the entire car goes dead quiet and the air goes stale. Stanford is a bad word, because Stanford means yelling matches; Sam at eighteen, beelining out the parking lot of the one-thousandth dingy motelâa team of one, duffel slung over his back, trampling on gravel to the nearest bus station; leaving and choosing to stay gone.
You canât see much. Sam is stillâprobably chewing on the inside of his cheek and waiting for the other shoe to drop. Dean eyes him warily, before giving a hesitant thanks, hitting the end call button, and tossing it on the vinyl cushion like a bottle cap off a beer. You know generally where the next thirty minutes is going to go: a formulaic argument, where the two of them are competitively nonverbal, until one of them is fed up enough to make the jump and start ragging on the other.
Youâre thrown for a loop when Dean swerves the Impala onto the shoulder of the highway and youâre subject to what feels like whiplash as your body jerks right and grounds you against the door. With the wind nearly knocked out of your lungs, you manage to gasp out a punchy expletive to try and scold Dean. He merely snatches the keys out the ignition.

The classroom buzzes with the quiet scratch of pencils against paper as I write The Renaissance across the whiteboard.Â
"All right," I say, setting the marker down. "Last class we talked about the conditions that led into the Renaissance. Today we're looking at why it began in Italy and how it spread throughout Europe."Â
Twenty-six pairs of eyes look back at me.Â
Well... twenty-five.Â
Jackson is still trying to balance his pencil on his upper lip.
I don't even have to look directly at him to know exactly what he's doing. It's become something of a routine over the past few weeksâevery time the class settles into a quieter moment, he decides to test the laws of physics using whatever happens to be on his desk.Â
Without missing a beat, I set my marker on the tray beneath the whiteboard. "Jackson."Â
His eyes widen as the pencil drops with a loud clack against the desktop before rolling onto the floor.Â
A few students snicker while Jackson hurriedly scoops it up, rubbing the back of his neck with an embarrassed grin. "Sorry."Â
"I know you are," I reply, unable to hide the smile tugging at the corner of my mouth. "Now, unless your pencil has somehow become relevant to fifteenth-century Italy, I'd appreciate it if it stayed in your hand."Â
More laughter ripples through the room, and just like that, everyone's attention returns to the front. "Can anyone remind me what the word Renaissance actually means?" I ask, leaning lightly against my desk.Â
Several hands shoot into the air. "Olivia."Â
"It means rebirth."Â
"Exactly." I nod, pleased. "It refers to a period of renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman ideasâparticularly in art, literature, philosophy, science, and architecture. Rather than viewing the Middle Ages as something to continue, many scholars believed they were rediscovering knowledge that had been forgotten for centuries."Â
As I speak, I jot rebirth, humanism, and classical learning beneath the lesson title, occasionally glancing back toward the class to make sure they're following along. Most of them are copying notes; a couple are already trying to connect today's lesson to yesterday's discussion.Â
It's one of those classes every teacher hopes forânot perfectly silent, but engaged in all the right ways, for the most part.
"So," I continue, capping the marker, "Why Italy? Why didn't the Renaissance begin somewhere like England or France?"Â
Before anyone can answer, a familiar metallic click cuts through the room.
The sound is quiet, but every student hears it. Twenty-six heads swivel in perfect synchronization toward the narrow connecting door tucked into the back corner of the classroomâthe one leading directly into the science room next door.
For a brief, naĂŻve second, I consider pretending I didn't hear it. Maybe if I keep talking, the man on the other side will realize I'm in the middle of class and leave.Â
The thought lasts exactly as long as it takes for the doorknob to finish turning. The door creaks open a few inches before a familiar head of blond hair appears through the gap, followed by a pair of soft blue eyes that sweep across my classroom as though he's simply checking in on the weather.Â
The room erupts.Â
"It's Mr. Grace."Â
"Oh, he's here."Â
"I told you it'd happen today."Â
A few students exchange triumphant looks like they'd been placing bets on exactly when he'd interrupt, which to be fair, is a valid thing to put money on. Considering he pokes his head into my classroom nearly every day like clockwork, the odds are usually in their favor.
Ryland's gaze lands on me almost immediately, his expression brightening into an easy smile that makes it painfully obvious he doesn't feel even remotely guilty about interrupting.Â
I set my marker on the tray beneath the whiteboard and fold my arms. "Everyone say hi to Mr. Grace.â
The warm greetings echo through the classroom with far more enthusiasm than anything I'd said during the lesson, and Ryland has the audacity to look delighted by it.Â
"Hi, everybody." He lifts a hand in a small wave. "How's history?"Â
"Good!" several students answer at once.Â
One voice from the back calls, "She gave us homework yesterday!"Â
I point toward the student without turning fully around. "And I'll do it again."Â
Ryland lets out an amused laugh before looking back at me, seemingly content to let the chatter die down before saying another word. He has one hand resting against the edge of the door, his shoulder leaning casually into the frame as though he belongs there. Honestly, at this point, maybe he does.Â
The connecting door has become less of a boundary between our classrooms and more of a revolving entrance for whatever question has wandered into his head that day.Â
"So..." he begins, drawing the word out just enough that I already know I'm not going to like whatever comes next. "I've got a question."Â
"I know," I reply flatly. "You always have a question."Â
"It's a history question."Â
"I've heard that one before."
I hear a few of the students giggle.
"Okay, hear me out,â he starts talking. âHow long does something have to happen before it becomes history? Like... if I trip over a chair right now, is that history five minutes from now? Or does there have to be a waiting period?"
The giggles erupt.Â
It begins with Jackson in the second row, who immediately drops his head onto his desk in an attempt to muffle his laugh. Olivia covers her mouth with the sleeve of her sweatshirt, while a few others exchange bewildered looks that quickly dissolve into smiles.Â
I simply stare at Ryland. He stares back, completely serious.Â
"...Mr. Grace."Â
"What?"Â
"You interrupted my lesson..."Â
"I did."Â
"...to ask me when the present becomes the past?"
He nods once. âIâve been thinking about it all morning.â
Which is what he says every single time. Every time that connecting door swings open, itâs for Mr. Ryland Grace to get some historical insight on whatever topic seems to be occupying his mind on that given day.
âIâve been thinking about it all morning.â
âIâve been dying to know.â
âIt kept me up last night.â
So, like always, I provide him with an answer just long enough to please him, but short enough to keep the attention of my students. Once satisfied, he flashes a grin and swings the door shut, allowing me to finally get back to my lesson plans.Â
That is, until Dylanâa small boy in the front rowâspeaks up.Â
âAre you and Mr. Grace dating?â
The question hangs in the air for about two seconds before the chatter starts up.
The room dissolves into overlapping voices, half the students suddenly abandoning any pretense of discussing the Renaissance in favor of the much more pressing matter of their two teachers' personal lives.
âI knew it!â
âMr. Grace loves her!â
âDoes this mean she has cooties?â
I inhale sharply. Part of me is embarrassed that this is what my life has come to; the other part of me is mentally scolding Ryland Grace for creating this mess in the first place.
âOkay, everybody quiet down, please.â I rub my temples. âMr. Grace and I are colleagues; weâre both teachers here, and we both enjoy getting to see you all every day. The only love we have is for you guys.â
I watch as half the class opens their mouths to toss in an opposing argument, but thankfully the bell rings before they can get any of them out.
The tension that started forming in my chest disappears instantly.
âAlright everyone, remember your worksheets are due tomorrow at the start of class!â I remind them, but I can tell none of my students seem to care as they zip up their backpacks and form into their little clusters as they all walk out the door.
âSee you tomorrow!â
âByeee!â
âTell Mr. Grace we said hi!â
"I will not be passing along your messages," I say under my breath, but the words are drowned out by the scrape of opening lockers and the familiar chaos of the passing period.Â
Jackson is the last one to reach the door.Â
Before stepping into the hallway, he turns back with entirely too much confidence for a thirteen-year-old. "I still think he'd say yes."Â
I blink. "...To what?"Â
"If you asked him out."Â
My jaw drops. "Out."Â
He grins. "I'm just saying, I think he likes you."Â
"Jackson, you little menace." I shoo him away with my hands. âGo to your next class.â
He laughs as he rushes out the door, and despite everything, it makes me smile.Â
I let out a slow breath, shaking my head as I begin weaving between the rows of desks. A forgotten notebook rests beneath one chair, three pencils have somehow migrated into the aisle, and someone's worksheet has been abandoned on the floor despite my reminder that it was due tomorrow.
I love my job.
My coworkers, however, tend to push my buttons. More specifically, the man whoâs currently sitting in the classroom next door, the man who somehow has the same exact free period as I do.Â
And as I gather up the scattered papers, my annoyance starts to grow for him.
Because I canât prove it, but he must know what heâs doing. Why on Earth would he act the way he does if not to simply make my life more difficult?
Because thereâs no way someone as intelligent as Ryland Grace could be that oblivious.Â
The man has a doctorate in molecular biology. He can explain complex scientific concepts to a room full of thirteen-year-olds without so much as glancing at his notes. He's published research. He's the kind of person who can answer obscure science trivia before a student can even finish asking the question.Â
Yet somehow, every afternoon, he loses all ability to determine whether a question can wait fifteen minutes.
And itâs really starting to get on my nerves.
So, before I can think too much on it, I walk over to the back of my classroom and swing open the connecting door.
The familiar scent of dry-erase markers and rubbing alcohol greets me almost immediately as I step through the doorway into the science room.Â
Ryland's classroom is, unsurprisingly, organized chaos.Â
The tables are arranged in neat rows, but every available surface seems to be occupied by something. A half-finished model of a DNA helix hangs from the ceiling near the windows. Beakers and graduated cylinders dry upside down on a rack beside the sink. The back counter is lined with bins labeled ACIDS, BASES, FOOD COLORING, and, somewhat concerningly, one simply labeled MISCELLANEOUS THINGS THAT MIGHT EXPLODE (THEY WON'T) in thick black marker.Â
I sincerely hope the last label is a joke.Â
Ryland is sitting at his desk with a stack of lab reports spread out in front of him, a red pen tucked behind one ear as he absentmindedly scribbles comments in the margins. He's so focused on whatever he's reading that he doesn't notice me at first.
âMr. Grace,â I say as I close the door behind me.
His head snaps up so quickly that the pen behind his ear slips loose, bouncing once off his shoulder before landing somewhere in the mountain of papers covering his desk.Â
I watch as his entire face lights up. âWhy, hello there. To what do I owe the pleasure?âÂ
I don't return his smile.Â
Instead, I slowly fold my arms across my chest and lean back against the now-closed connecting door. "We need to talk."Â
The grin on his face falters just enough for me to notice. "...That sounds ominous."Â
"It should."Â
He glances around the empty classroom as though looking for someone else I could possibly be talking to before pointing a finger at his own chest. "Me?"Â
"Unless there's another Mr. Grace hiding under your desk."Â
He instinctively looks under the desk anyway. I hate that it almost makes me smile.
When he comes back up, he pretends to be shocked. âThatâs crazy because I swear there was another Mr. Grace under there just a few minutes agoâŚâ
I roll my eyes as I push off the door and make my way to his desk. âRyland, look, this is serious.â I stop a few feet away from where he sits, letting my hand rest on one of the lab tables. âYou need to quit it with all the questions during my lessons.âÂ
âOh, are you having trouble answering them?â He smirks, and it nearly kills me.
"I mean it," I continue, keeping my voice calm despite the frustration that's been building all afternoon. "You may think it's harmlessâand most of the time it isâbut you're interrupting my lessons almost every day. My students have started expecting it. They stop paying attention the second they hear that doorknob turn because they know you're about to poke your head in with another question."Â
Ryland doesn't interrupt, he just listens.Â
"I spend the first ten minutes of class trying to get everyone focused, and then you show up asking whether people living through the Renaissance knew they were living through the Renaissance, or whether castles had employee handbooks, and suddenly I'm spending the next five minutes trying to steer everyone back toward the lesson I was already teaching. And then, on top of that, our students have the nerve to ask me if you and I are dating, and thatâs definitely not something I incorporate into my lesson plan.âÂ
I donât realize how long Iâve been talking for until the room finally falls back into silence as he processes my rant.Â
Ryland purses his lips and drums one of his fingers on the desk, hopefully deeply considering everything Iâve just said. Though I know itâs no use when he looks up at me and tilts his head.Â
âSo they asked if we were dating,â he clicks his tongue. âAnd your response wasâŚâ
âNo,â I shake my head. âMy response was obviously no.â
Ryland nods slowly, as though filing that information away. "Right, right."Â
He drums his fingers against the edge of the desk once more, his gaze drifting thoughtfully at a spot somewhere just past my shoulder. My own fingers reach up to pinch the bridge of my nose.
âLook, Ryland,â I sigh. âYouâre a great guy, but I really donât feel like filling my students in on my love life every class.â
His eyes snap to mine. âLove life⌠you have love⌠you are in love⌠thereâs someoneââ
âNo,â I cut him off. âThatâs the problem: there is no love life, so Iâm just wasting valuable classroom time discussing something nonexistent.âÂ
He considers my words for a second. âSo what Iâm hearing is that youâre not in love with someone, which means you are, in fact, single?â
I blink at him. "...Ryland."Â
"What?"Â
"I need you to understand that that is not the conclusion I wanted you to draw from this conversation."
He pushes his chair out and stands up, rounding his desk to where Iâm still leaning against a lab table. He adjusts his glasses with one of his hands and pushes them back up on his nose.Â
âI just think thatâs an important piece of data to gather, about you⌠I mean,â he says, shrugging as if his words arenât swirling around in my brain.
âWhat⌠what does that even mean?â I ask.
âIt means,â he reaches out and lays his hand flat on the lab table next to me; maybe itâs a peace offering⌠I honestly have no idea. âIt means that I like talking to you.â
I take a deep breath, looking up at the papier-mache solar system model on his ceiling.Â
âI like talking to you too, Ryland, just maybe not during my class periods.â I glance back down at him. And heâs grinning ear to ear.
âReally? You like talking to me?â He questions, placing a hand on his chest as if heâs in absolute disbelief.Â
Itâs kinda cute.
I let out a long sigh that does absolutely nothing to hide the smile threatening to appear. "Please don't make this weird."
"I'm not making it weird," he says, sounding genuinely confused. "I'm just... verifying."
âOkay, letâs make it very clear then,â I take a small step closer to him. âYes, I like talking to you. No, not when itâs during my class time. Yes, I would like to talk to you more. No, I would not like it to impact my teaching time.âÂ
Ryland watches me with complete concentration, as if I've just started explaining the instructions for an especially complicated lab. He nods after each sentence.Â
"Okay."Â
Another nod.Â
"Yep."Â
Another.Â
"Got it."
I squint at him. âDo you?â
He scoffs, pretending to dust off his shoulder. âOf course I do.â
âRepeat it back to me then,â I challenge.
He pretends to crack his knuckles.
âYou like talking to me, but not when I interrupt your class. You think Iâm really interesting and attractive, and you want to go out with me this Friday, but you donât want our students to know about it,â he raises a questioning eyebrow as he finishes his sentence.
My jaw drops, and for a split second my mouth struggles to form a response to whatever the hell he just said. He seems pretty proud of it, though, giving me a playful wink.
âThat is not at all what I said,â I point an accusatory finger at him.
âTrue,â he admits. âBut it does sound like an amazing plan.â
And, yeah, I hate that heâs right.
Because as much as it hurts me to admit it, getting to talk to him every day is kinda one of the many perks of this job, though Iâll never tell him that. His ego is big enough. And I havenât actually been out with anyone in what feels like years, so it doesnât sound like a completely awful idea.Â
âIâll only go out with you if you save all your history questions for Friday night,â I say. âWhich involves not opening that door when my class is in session.â
He doesnât waste a second.
âDeal!â
And fortunately, he sticks to his word.Â

Boat. Bayou. Boyfriend.
Colt Seavers x Reader
Summary: With hectic schedules due to filming a new movie, you haven't gotten to spend "real" time with your boyfriend. He takes it upon himself to surprise you.
Word Count: 2.8K
Warnings: tooth-rotting fluff, mentions of crying, Colt is the boyfriend I need
A/N: Did I have to do boat research for this fic? Maybe... I've been wanting to write more for Colt, and I came up with this idea a little while ago. There is some serious Shrek memeing behind this fic but I still think it's still adorable! - Birch<3
The musky air of Louisiana wasn't something you thought you would experience because of work. The types of projects you were sucked into never leaned into the action side of the film-making industry, but things change.
Recruited for an upcoming action movie set in the swampland of Louisiana, you had been secluded to the south for what seemed like months. The only bonus? Your boyfriend was working on the project alongside you.
Colt was one of the best stuntmen in the business, and everyone making the film knew this. So when they finished scriptwriting and told the cast there was going to be an action sequence with a boat jump, you knew just who they were going to bring in.
It was fun working on a movie with your boyfriend. Until you never got to see him because your schedules only overlapped for moments in passing.
The most time you got to spend with Colt was a few of minutes here or there when he'd knock on your trailer door with a cup of hot chocolate for you before call times in the morning. He'd press a kiss to your cheek with a sleepy "good morning" before you'd have to run off to set.
You were tired of it. Colt was tired of it.
So, Colt does whatever a good boyfriend would do, and he steals a boat.
Okay, he borrows it.
ACK when will it be my turn to have colt seavers as a boyfriend T-T
Summary: Ryland fulfils your wishes
Find part 1 here
Your heart hasnât stopped racing since Ryland caught you spilling out your desires for him. That is how you find yourself standing right next to him as he unlocks the door to his apartment. The Ryland whose touch used to be so light until yesterday now keeps a firm grip on your fingers, twisting the key into the lock with his free hand. It clicks open. Ryland pushes the door, and you follow him inside.
The moment you enter his apartment, the door begins to swing shut. Ryland lets go of your hand only to turn to you. He walks into your space, forcing you to step backwards until your back thumps against the closed door.
You look up, meeting his eyes as he towers over you. A focused intensity has stayed in his gaze ever since he told you to âuse your wordsâ waiting until you let out a broken âyesâ before he tugged you out of the cafe and straight to his apartment. You are unsure of what to expect, youâve never seen him like this. A wave of thrill passes through you at the anticipation of what is to come.
His hands reach for either side of your waist. His grip is soft. âYou want this, right?â he asks, his voice dropping.
The heat radiating from his body is overwhelming. His face rests just inches from yours, but he patiently waits for you to answer.
âI want youâ you whisper.
The softness in his gaze flashes into something different. He pushes himself deeper into your space, pressing his frame against yours until you are backed completely against the door. Not wasting another second, he leans down to kiss you.
He has kissed you many times before. The feel of his lips is entirely familiar, but the way he is kissing you right now is completely foreign. The usual hesitant press of his mouth is replaced by a firm, demanding pressure. It lasts barely a few seconds before his lips part, prompting yours to do the same. He moves one hand to cup your jaw, tilting your head back against the door as his tongue slides into your mouth.
Your breath hitches in your throat. His tongue brushes against yours, swirling inside your mouth. Not only is he kissing the absolute soul out of you, but he presses his front against yours, eliciting a soft moan from your throat.
He pulls his lips back, but only by a fraction of an inch. âYou wanted my tongue down your throat, yeah, babe?â His words are spoken against your mouth.
Your hands brace around his arms, your stomach flips. Before you can form a single word in response, he gently nips your bottom lip between his teeth, letting go when you gasp. His thumb coaxes your jaw back slightly, and his lips drag a wet path down to your neck. He pauses, sucking against the underside of your jawline.
âWant me to have my way with you against a wall, yeah?â he rasps against your collarbone.
âRy...â A broken sound leaves your mouth. You are incapable of forming a proper sentence.
âFuckâ you breath out, feeling the sudden pressure of his teeth against your skin, the back of your head thumps lightly against the door. âDidnât think youâd have all these thoughts, babyâ His hands brush along the hem of your top before sliding underneath, making contact with your bare skin. You inhale sharply at the contrast of his slightly cold fingertips. He raises his head, his blue eyes level with yours.
âI was nervousâ he admits. His hands caress your sides gently, his thumb tracing your ribs. âI didn't want to risk crossing a lineâ His voice soft and sincere.
Your heart flips at how sweet he is. It hits you that he was never awkward for a lack of desire, but because he was holding himself back to ensure your comfort.
âBut hearing you say all those things...all the things I want to do, the things Iâve been waiting to do to you...â He whispers, resting his forehead against yours, âyou couldâve just told me, instead of ranting to a friend who canât really do anything to help youâ
There it goes again. Your breathing, which had just barely returned to normal, spikes again.
âDidnât want to freak you outâ you mutter.
He lets out a low chuckle, ââM not freaked out. You know that, right?â
âMhm...now I doâ you say, looking into his eyes.
The corner of his mouth quirks up into a smirk. âArenât you gonna rip the jacket off of me?â he asks, his eyes darting down to your mouth.
Your fingers twitch at the back of his neck.
âCome on...â he urges. His hands leave your sides, coming up to grasp your wrists. He gently leads your hands to the front opening of his jacket, âThought I was supposed to be the shy oneâ
If your heart wasnât hammering inside your chest, you would think you are dreaming. This is the exact same boyfriend you were just venting about. Taking a steadying breath, you slide your fingers onto the lapels of his jacket, gripping the fabric and pushing it off his shoulders. His arms move to shrug out of the sleeves, letting it drop to the floor. It feels good to finally strip it off him.
ââKay. You gonna let me have my way with you now?â He tugs lightly at the hem of your top, but he does not pull it over your head just yet. He is asking, refusing to make the move until you give him the green light.
You hum, far too lost in this side of him to formulate a word.
âNopeâ He huffs, his fingers losing their grip on the fabric.
You open your mouth to retort, to tell him that he started this, that he cannot possibly leave you hanging like this, when his hand reaches for your face. His fingers tip your chin up, forcing you to look right into his eyes behind his lenses.
âWeâre gonna try againâ he whispers, âyouâll give me a verbal confirmation, because I wonât ask again, okay, baby?â
There is absolutely no way your nervous boyfriend is making your toes curl this much using nothing but his words. You let out a shaky, âYesâ against his lips.
âYes what, baby?â His index finger lightly taps your cheek, demanding the rest.
You suddenly wish you could go back to the moment you called him awkward and tentative, because right now, he is making it difficult to even breathe. You gulp, âYes, I want you to have your way with me right here, pleaseâ
His lips stretch into a knowing smile, âGood girlâ
Fuck, you think, your mind short-circuiting. Before you can even process the phrase, he seals your lips with his. His tongue traces your teeth as it enters your mouth, muffling the surprised noise that slips from your throat. His hips press forward, letting you feel his bulge through his jeans. He groans into your tongue as you clutch at his shirt.
You have never heard him make a sound like that before. The noise is thrilling enough that you feel yourself growing wetter. His fingers trail down from where they were tangled in your hair, sliding along your skin until they reach the hem of your top again. In one quick motion, he pulls back from your mouth and pulls the shirt over your head, discarding it carelessly over his jacket.
His fingers work with sudden speed to unbutton his own shirt, letting it fall onto the growing heap on the floor. His mouth immediately latches onto the exposed skin beneath your collarbone, his lips trailing a hot, wet path downwards.
Your eyes flutter shut. Your fingers blindly trace a path to the waistband of his jeans. Before you can even begin to undo the button, his hands reach down. His bigger hands trap yours, stopping you.
âIâm having my way, babeâ he murmurs against your skin, his warm breath sending shivers down your spine. âYou can have your chance later, but right now, Iâm gonna do what I wantâ His lips move to the valley of your breasts. âAnd youâre gonna take itâ
He finishes the sentence just as his tongue licks a path across your skin, followed by a gentle nip. An involuntary whine leaves your mouth, and you can feel his smile spread against your skin. He pushes you firmly back against the door. The cold surface makes you gasp, but he is already too busy focusing on your breasts. He moves from one to the other, giving them equal, agonising attention. His warm mouth envelops your nipples, his tongue flicking over them until soft, breathless moans spill out of you.
Your fingers desperately grab at the dark blonde strands at the nape of his neck, tugging slightly and making him let out a shuddering sound. His fingers slide all the way down your body, finding the zipper of your pants and slowly pulling it down, you step out of them until you are left exposed.
He straightens up towering over you again. You look up, your breath catching. The glasses you fantasised about are perched on the bridge of his nose. He looks a little wrecked, his messy blonde hair sticking up where your fingers just clutched it, his chest heaving, but the look behind those lenses is focused as he looks at you with adoration. He is tracking the rapid rise and fall of your chest.
âLook at youâ he murmurs, his voice a low rasp. He hooks his fingers into the waistband of your underwear, not pulling them down yet, âYour heart rate is elevated. Classic biological arousalâ
âRy, please...â you gasp, your knees shaking from the slow friction of his thumbs rubbing circles against your hip.
âIâm just stating facts, babyâ he whispers, leaning down until his lips brush against your earlobe. âYou wanted me to talk science to you, remember?â He slides his hand lower, his fingers moving the fabric of your underwear aside, slipping to find the heat between your thighs. You let out a choked whimper as his fingers move along your slick skin. âIncrease in fluids. Youâre perfectly prepared for meâ He dips a finger inside of you.
The contrast of the cold door against your back and the pressure of him adding another finger is making your mind hazy. You struggle to keep your voice down as his fingers curl into you.
He pulls his hand away, leaving you whining for more. He doesnât waste a second. With a swift motion, he unbuttons his jeans and pushes them down along with his underwear. He pushes your underwear down your legs as well. He grips your thighs, easily lifting you off your feet. You wrap your legs around his waist, your hands locking behind his neck to steady yourself.
His glasses slide down his nose a fraction of an inch from the movement, and he peers right over the frames at you, the exact look you described to your friend.
âWeâre a closed systemâ he whispers, his breath warm against your mouth.
With one thrust, he pushes himself inside you.
The sensation is so overwhelming that a broken sob breaks from your lips. Ryland groans loud against your mouth, his eyes shutting for a brief second as his body adjusts to the tight heat of you.
He begins to move, lifting you slightly with every upward thrust against the door. The wood rattles behind you with the force of his movements, but his grip on your hips is tight. There is no trembling, no second-guessing. He knows exactly what heâs doing.
âRylandâŚoh my God, Ry-â you slurr, your fingers digging into his shoulders, completely helpless.
âThe distanceâ he pants, his forehead resting against yours, his glasses slightly touching your brow, âthe distance between us being zero...the gravitational pull is absoluteâ
His fingers dig into the flesh of your thighs, grunting as his thrusts lose the careful movement, turning hard, and desperate.
âExperiencing overloadâ he rasps, his teeth catching your bottom lip as he hits the perfect angle inside you.
Your fingers grip his hair, pulling him closer as the pressure tightens in your abdomen. You are consumed by him, by the heat, by the wood against your back, and the relentless rhythm of his hips.
âRy...Iâm gonna-â
âIâve got youâ he groans, his glasses fogging slightly as his breath hitches. He hitches your legs higher up his waist, as he thrusts in deep, holding himself there, âLet it go, babyâ
Your vision goes blur, your walls clenching around him as you let go.
Ryland lets out a broken sound that vibrates through your chest. His body goes rigid against yours. He shudders burying himself as deep as he can go inside you as he releases, his length pulsing against your core.
For some time, the only sound in the entryway is the frantic breathing.
Slowly, Ryland rests his forehead against your shoulder, his chest heaving. He doesnât slide out of you, choosing instead to keep you hooked around his waist, resting his weight against you and the door.
He takes a shaky breath, and when he finally pulls back to look at you, his glasses are slightly crooked on his nose. His lips stretch in a dazed smile.
âStill awkward?â he whispers softly, his voice wrecked. Your chest is still heaving from the intensity, but you canât help the breathless laugh that escapes you.
He pulls his lips back, but only by a fraction of an inch. âYou wanted my tongue down your throat, yeah, babe?â His words are spoken against your mouth.

Itâs almost past midnight and youâve already gone through the motions of laying all of your things out on the coffee table. Youâve been liking the living room more and moreâfor a wholly unacceptable reason. There are, as youâve noticed, acceptable and unacceptable things to think about Ryland to prolong your ability to live together. Acceptable things: he does his laundry promptly, heâs clean, he knows when to be quiet. Unacceptable things: heâs attractive even with the sass, the graphic t-shirts are⌠kind of cute, and you like seeing him read in the living room with his body laid out across the couch.
Neither of you have talked about that night after the bar since it happened. Itâs a good thing, because thereâs no normal way for that conversation to be carried out. Ryland doesnât have to acknowledge that he thinks youâre âobservationallyâ pretty, any more than you have to acknowledge that you liked laying that kiss on his cheek. All appears well the next morning when you two are slightly sluggish and fail to talk it out. Breakfast like normal, on the quieter sideâand you and Ryland agree with certainty, and without a single word exchanged, that if you want to keep living together, itâs better to just sweep an incident like that neatly under the rug.Â
You couldnât be more thankful for the start of Fall semester. Your schedule, paired with Rylandâs, results amicably in the apartment being a little more empty than it was during the summer. Heâs in class or working, youâre in class or workingâand the two of you barely have the opportunity to see one another aside from late nights or early mornings.
Your phone buzzes on the coffee table. A text from him: Grading running late, camping library till closed. That crosses out your late night sighting. A good thing, you think. Ryland wonât have to see you torturing yourself over heaps of computer work. And you wonât have to have that passing, heartwarming feeling you get when he asks you what youâre working onâand inevitably decides to sit and work with you.
â
You wake up on your side, arm draped down and fingertips nearly brushing the rug. From this angle on the couch, you realize you mustâve fallen asleep doing your work. Everythingâs still as you left itâlaptop half-open, notebooks, and a favorite pencil. Except, thereâs a blanket strewn over you and a memory-foam pillow slotted just beneath your head. The pillowcase is a dark-blue, smells like dryer sheetsânot yours, and thereâs only one other option in the house.Â
Ryland mustâve tucked you in after coming home from the library. The thought of him unlocking the door, slowing at the sight of you knocked out in the living room, and tiptoeing to grab you a warmer, comfier setup makes your chest tighten.
You have to find your phone somewhere by you on the couch; itâd been at your side when you fell asleep, and when you find the cold glass screen, itâs nearing being wedged between the cushions. A click of the side-button, and the lockscreen reads: 7:36 A.M. You donât have to get up for another hour or so, but Ryland should be up by now. Itâs best practice, you think, to return the pillow and blanket back to its owner, before wandering back to your own bedroom. So, you get up on wobbly, half-asleep legs. The blanket gets folded as neatly as possible, with the pillow stacked on top, and you carry them with both arms over to his bedroom.
You give a soft couple of knocks on Rylandâs door. âHey, you awake?â Thereâs a thud, a muttered curse, and footsteps padding over on the other side of the door. Definitely awake. âSorry,â you say, âI just wanted to make sure you get your bedding before you head out for the day. And I also wanted to sayââ
Rylandâs opening the door with one hand and tugging his shirt over his chest with the other. You get a good look at his bare stomach while pushing out a meek, âThanks.â You donât know how youâre going to get that image out of your mind for the next twenty-four hours. Heâs⌠more toned than you wouldâve expectedâabs soft and tight. Thatâs an unacceptable thing to think. You give your attention over to his eyes instead, the usual murky blue, twinkling with amusement.
âWell, you were fetal positioned on the couch,â he considers, âI wouldâve woken you up, but you seemed pretty comfortable where you were.â It doesnât help that Rylandâs hair is wetâhaving just gone through his morning shower, blonde hair all damp and unstyled. He takes the folded blanket and pillow off your hands with a small grin, before turning around to drop them on his bed.
The wide crack of the door Ryland leaves open allows you to peer into his bedroom uninhibited. Youâve rarely gotten a good look like this in the past couple of months youâve been living in the apartment, considering how private he is and how little you want to pry. But now, youâve got a great picture: his gridded sheets, the PC display on his desk, a bedside table with a small, ceramic lamp, a rack of sweaters on the side. Itâs all tidy, and a little plainâsave for the few posters. You can pick out⌠a big periodic table? âIs thatâŚ?â
Ryland turns back to you with a couple steps, nearly chest-to-chest in the doorway of his room. Heâs turning over his shoulder to trace your gaze, then peering down at you with a lightly dazed look. âYeah,â Ryland says, picking at his nail, trying to feign disinterestâbut itâs very apparent thereâs some kind of sentimental value in the poster. Itâs placed conveniently over his headboard.
âHm.â You nod, completely unsurprised. Itâs perfectly him. âDo you count floating molecules to go to sleep, too?â
âOkay. Youââ he stammers. âYou could do with a little bit more manners. I made sure you wouldnât catch a cold last night, and suddenly youâre coming to my room and taking a shot at the decor.â
âIâm kidding. Donât get butthurt,â you tell Ryland. âItâs super cute.â He seems even more worked up by your choice of words, already beginning to shut the door on you. âOkayâit just goes. Youâre, like, the most science-y guy I know, and I like it.â âI like youâ seems like a more fitting translation of the words, and the pointed way in which you let them slip out of your mouth.
Ryland keeps his door open with a small crack left for the two of you to peer at each other. He murmurs, eyes softened, âThereâs extra coffee in the pot. Donât waste it.â
â
As the weeks pass, you find yourself in an odd back-and-forth with Ryland with the matter of favors. Itâs a good thing on paper. He leaves you coffee in the pot, and you make sure to charge his laptop if you find it left on the dining room table. He restocks your snacks, and you make sure to make him an extra portion of your dinner on his harder study days. Itâs a fully functional exchange that exceeds cohabitation. Youâre both so programmed into the care that it's second nature.
Like, now, when youâre staring at the metal thermos in the fridgeâhaving been in search of milk for your morning cereal. Itâs his. Ryland is supposed to be between classes for the rest of the day, with a fifteen minute break to eat. And his lunch is wedged between your leftovers from last night and your communal carton of eggs. Heâs a grown-up. He can fend for himself, probably grab a quick bite to eat at the student union. But you know heâs been trying to meal prep more, cut down on costs. You should take his thermos to him; youâd be a crappy roommate if you didnât.
You slot your phone out of your back pocket, trying to check for his location. Heâs on campusâand youâre sure that you could fit in dropping his lunch off before your class. With a soft breath, you pick the metal thermos up off the shelf of the refrigerator, and toss it onto the counter next to your breakfast. Youâll pack it with the rest of your thingsâthe laptop, the notebooksâand Ryland will probably be very thankful for you later.
â
Youâve never been to this building before, let alone up to the third-floor and over to the student labs. It takes a fair bit of navigating, seeing as the hallwaysâall decked out in research posters and flyers for student job opportunitiesâare laid out essentially like a labyrinth. Itâs strange to think that your roommate spends the larger part of his time on-campus in this hall. He probably has a certain air of authority weaving past these offices and labs, having earned it on the way to his Masters degree. Ryland is smartâcocky, of courseâand walks with his head far too high. But he works hard, stays here even when heâs allowed to go home. You like that about him.
Youâre very sure youâve made a full loop of the third floor before you actually get to where youâre supposed to be. This is the room, as clinically white and void of decoration as it is. Thereâs a bunch of undergrads here, all in white lab coats and lab glasses. They look at you with an undercurrent of stern judgement. You donât seem like youâre supposed to be there, because youâre not. Theyâre watching you, baby-faced and all, like curious, wide-eyed hawks. âSorry, is Ryland here?â you ask them.Â
A girl with tied-back, coiled ginger hair answers first: âHeâs grabbing a fresh set of agar plates from the fridge.â
Then, another girl, her lab partner, pipes up next: âAre you hisâ?â
âRoommate!â Ryland coughs out from right behind you. Itâs difficult not to flinch at the exclamation, and your shoulders are still tensed up tight as he continues to speak. âThis is my roommate whoâs supposed to be at home until 2:00PM. What are you doing here?â Ryland is quick to drop the stack of agar plates off onto the nearby countertop space. The small cohort of students in front of him are clearly trying not to snicker at you both. You can practically see his right eye twitching just beneath the lens of his glasses. Heâs not embarrassed, per say. But itâs deathly apparent that heâs getting worked up.
âI have your lunch in my bag. Here.â Youâre just about to pull that small thermos out of your shoulder bag, but heâs putting his hands up to stop you.
âWait, wait. Câmere.â Ryland takes his bright-blue medical gloves off and snaps them into the trash can with a foot on the pedal. Then, heâs shrugging his lab coat off, hanging it up, and making his way over to the sink. You stand a good distance away, watching him lather his hands carefully with soap, scrub them together, and rinse them clean. You rarely get the opportunity to see him like this.
Then, youâre following him out of the lab. He takes the thermos out of your hands gingerly, palms brushing unnecessarily over your fingers. âYou didnât have to drop it off,â he tells you, hands clinging around the cold metal of his thermos. You wish heâd stop looking down at you with that look about him. He has his jaw clenched, and thereâs a light dusting of blush across his cheeks.
âItâs not a big deal.â You look away, shooting your gaze anywhere but his face. In the hallway outside, thereâs a bookcase with an index card reading âfree textbooksâ taped to its top. He sets his thermos down on the top of it, before leaning on the expanse of wall right beside it. âI hope it isnât weird for me to pull up to your workââ you tell him.
âOh, no. I donât mind it at all,â Ryland says. Thereâs a hesitation in his voice and makes you squint. âItâs just that theyâve been spending the entire semester so far trying to pry into my private life. And Iâm pretty sure one or two of them have crushes on me, which is a no-go.â Ryland takes his glasses off with one hand and massages the bridge of his nose with the other. âZero boundaries, very territorialâbecause I happen to be a pretty decent teaching assistant.â
âYou think thatâs why they have crushes on you?â you scoff loudly.
â...Yes?â he murmurs. He looks pensive. There is no good reason for you to doubt his claimsâbut, heâs acting absurdly clueless. There are particular reasons for why this cohort might be fascinated with Ryland, and you donât think itâs his teaching skills.
âHm.â You give him a curt nod, trying your hardest not to give yourself away. He takes your silence uncomfortably, hands first held behind his hack in a tight clasp of his long fingers.
He canât hold it in. âTheyâre going to think that youâreâweâreââ Ryland gestures between the both of you in some haphazard way, an altogether efficient means of stating the obvious. Seeing each other. Screwing. Dating. Whatever heâs trying to say, itâs all very unanimous and completely unnecessary. You raise your hand up, nearly brushing against the center of his chestâa wordless means of telling Ryland to not even try. His jaw tightens. âOkay. Iâve got a lab waiting on me.â
âRight,â you say warily. âIâm gonna go grab something to drink before class so⌠see you at home.â The half-smile you give Rylandâall nerves, and only half-genuineâis matched by his own.
Ryland nods, âSee you. And thanks for the lunch,â before turning on his heel and traveling back through the doorway you both came out of. You make sure not to linger around, walking in wide steps toward the nearest elevator. Even halfway down the hall, the little giggles and murmurs are audible. It sounds like a middle-school class in there, and the same couple of undergrad students are chirping away. Out of the overlap, you can hear mimicries of your voiceââI have your lunch bag, Ry.ââthat are certainly inaccurate and a little bit rude.
Then, Rylandâs stern tone cuts through the noise. âIâm still your TA.â It must work at least a little, because the ceaseless giggling seems to tire. In your head, you can imagine him shrugging that lab coat back over his shoulders, then crossing his arms over his chest in an attempt at being strict. The thought of him being flustered about all this teasingâyouâve never seen him this red beforeâmakes you giddy. You have to get into the elevator with a hand tight on the strap of your shoulder bag, choking down a grin.
â
Youâre the first to get home that day. Torturously, youâve had him on your mind throughout all of your classes. His messy hair and his lab coat and the way he attempts some semblance of strictness as a graduate teaching assistant. All unacceptable. Thereâs no good way to excuse the way in which youâre picturing Ryland now. Itâs all muddled with your own uninhibited attraction. Hormones, you try to tell yourself, and proximity. You know that any other reasonings would be nothing but trouble.
This festering conflict lasts through the afternoon. You hang around the living room with your laptop, legs crossed over the cushions of the couch as you type away. Thereâs work here and there, a couple e-mails to sendâand you think youâd like to finish these up slowly so you might catch a glimpse of Ryland before he sequesters himself away in his bedroom.
According to schedule, Ryland can be heard plonking his Converse soles across the narrow hallway of your complex. Hearing the familiar, low jingle of his keys and the turn of the doorknob makes you straighten up a bit on the couch. Youâre about to give him a soft greeting, maybe mention that youâre about to cook dinner, when you see that Ryland has a shadow. A sweet-looking girl shuffles in behind him through the front doorâyour front doorâwith honey-blonde hair tied into a soft ponytail. You can feel your throat dry up at the sight.
âYouâre home. I was trying to ring your cell,â he says. âSorry. Hope the visitorâs okay.â
You can feel your eyes shutter, a few rapid blinks interrupting your otherwise relaxed composure. âNo, of course! Itâs totally fine,â you say, a bit of a nod programming itself onto your reaction. Itâs instinct and embarrassment all coalescing together, from the way you run your hair into your scalp to the way your fingers grip awkwardly at the corners of your laptop. âHi,â you say sheepishly to the blonde.
She has a little bit of a glow to her, all too excited to be peering around into the apartment and getting a good look into Rylandâs everyday. Her gaze practically breezes over you. You know that look all too well. Ryland introduces you first, then her, before theyâre quickly escorting themselves down the hall and to his room. This feels like punishment for enjoying him too much earlierâand the doting from his cohort of undergraduate students. The girl is pretty; you didnât quite catch her name. Something starting with an L. All you know is that this is definitely a matter of the universe keeping your ego in check.â
You donât know what to do with yourself after the door to his bedroom closes. The best course might be to go to your roomâor out to a bar. Youâre on the verge of closing your laptop and getting off the couch when you hear a light set of footsteps. Suddenly, youâre leaning back on the couch with your laptop balanced on your knees again. Ryland comes out of his bedroom with a gentle open-and-close of the door. You have an acute feeling of dread as he travels over to the cupboard to grab a glass. Then, the fridge for your shared pitcher of filtered water. âStop staring,â he says. You huff. He canât even see you. Thereâs no possible way for him to knowâ
âThought we agreed on no hookups?â you say with a hushed tone. The best you can do is try to keep it light. Itâs a good attempt.
âThatâs not aâŚâ Ryland guffaws. He turns around to face you, glass in hand. âWeâre in the same grad cohort, nosy.â
You hum, âIâm pretty sure she wants to get in your pants.â Ryland is exasperated with the implication, placing the glass down on the counter with his hand still wrapped around it.
âShe is my⌠colleague! She wants me to read over her research proposal.â Youâre praying itâs not a girlfriend from Canada kind of situation. Ryland reads the skepticism on your face easily. He reiterates, âItâs a real proposal. We have a conference in Spring and sheâs prepping the submission. I have one, too. Weâre trading.â
âWell, if you end up accidentally trading proposals in bed, Iâm just telling you now that Iâll have my headphones on. Noise-cancelling, just blasting straight rock,â you say, shrugging your shoulders slightly. Ryland picks the glass back up with a shake of his head, padding back down the hall and towards his room.
âIâm still not like that, but great,â he tells you, âGood to know.â Youâre still settled in on the couch as he opens and closes the door. You canât even see the girl anymore. You wonder if sheâs sitting at his desk or on his sheets. Itâs probably better not to think about it.
â
As promised, you have your earbuds stuffed tightly into your earsâmusic a good few decibels louder than they should be to be considered healthy. Youâve been tucked away in your room for the last hour and a half, still typing away on your laptop. Itâs difficult not to imagine whatâs happening in the room overâbut it doesnât seem to last long. What you do eventually hear, past your blasted music, is a slam of the front door. You have to tiptoe from your bed to your door, then crack the door open a good inch.
You peek outside into the hall, the wire of your earbuds hanging over your neck. The girl is gone. Ryland is at the front door, head hanging low. He turns with a miserable blush peeking out from beneath the rims of his glasses. He seems to catch your eye almost immediately, and you realize itâs virtually pointless to conceal your prying. Ryland confesses briskly, âShe tried to kiss me. On the mouth.â
You let out a breathy laughâand curse yourself for feeling relieved. âDidnât I tell you? Couldnât be more observant.â You let your door swing open wide. He hangs his glasses off his face and scrubs his face with his palms. Ryland groans, and then heâs walking over. He leans against the closed door of his bedroom, parallel to your own. Your socked feet are facing each other as Ryland pushes his glasses back up, hands locked together over his head. His t-shirt is riding up, and he doesnât seem to mind it much. You try not to pay any mind to his arms, either. This stressed posture heâs holding up is doing wonders for his biceps. Another unacceptable thing to think about him.Â
Ryland grumbles under his breath. âAnd here I was thinking you were getting jealous. Obviously, I know now that youâre just looking to be right.â
âAnd I am,â you say. ââright. Iâm right.â You cling sheepishly to the frame of your bedroom door, fingers jutting against the jamb. You canât believe he thought you were jealous. You were, a little. It couldnât have been that obvious, and obviousness aside, you donât know how he could bring it up so easily. Ryland does have a pretty full-of-himself attitude. A change of topic is probably best. âSo, she tried to kiss you, and youâŚâ
âPractically fell off the bed,â he nods. You canât help but clasp your palm over your mouth, holding back a guttural laugh. Ryland drops both of his arms, mirroring your lean with his arms crossed over his chest. âItâs really only half as funny as you think it is. She was really embarrassedâsaid she had to go meet a friend downtown for dinner.â
You can feel your eyebrow tick up a bit at the thought of this girl dismissing herself from Rylandâs room and straight out to the front door. Aside from your very expected qualms with the entire situation, she did seem pretty sweet. Youâd be embarrassed, too. Ryland seems just as unnerved, and he wasnât even the one to make the move. You click your tongue against the roof of your mouth. âYou werenât feeling it?â
Ryland tilts his head, âWell, last time somebody tried to kiss me, I had a kind of similar reaction. Total stasisââ You. Heâs talking about you, that night out with Marissa and Co., the hourly allegations of possibly-dating.
âI kissed you on the cheek! Donât be weird,â you shoot back vehemently. Now, he decides to bring it up. After weeks of no resolution, Ryland decides that this is the perfect opportunity to play it all out. Youâd expect nothing less. He really is a strategist.Â
Ryland blurts, âNobody kisses their roommates on the cheek. Iâm just saying.â Now, youâre feeling heat crawl up your neck, and Rylandâs looking a little bit more relaxed at the sight of this levelled playing field.
âYeah, I think Iâll maybe think it through the next time an opportunity arises,â you retort sarcastically. He couldnât be more on your nerves. Youâre just about ready to retreat back, shut the door in his face with a hasty goodbye. The second you step back, Ryland steps across the hall, hand placed flat over your door. Your eyes flit from his face, down his arm, to his hand, and back again.
Ryland lowers it slowly, biting down against the inside of his bottom lip. âSorry.â Thereâs plenty that youâd like to sayâmaybe, that itâs Rylandâs fault for calling you nice things, his fault for letting you room with him. Or, maybe it's your fault for deciding to reach out. Itâs certainly nobodyâs fault for the two of you residing within the same-enough social circles to connect. You wonder if you wouldâve ended up on each otherâs radars regardless. âTo answer your question, no. I wasnât feeling it. Sheâs not really my type,â he admits.
âOh.â You can feel the exasperation on your face melt into something more sobered. You canât tell whether or not Ryland knows how itâs coming across. Itâs certainly dangerous waters. Ryland looks more serious than youâve ever seen him, and the lump in your throat tells you that youâre on the more excitable end of hearing what he has to say.
He murmurs, âAnd Iâm a dissertation-first kind of guy.â Rightâthat makes a little bit more sense. You straighten up, narrowly avoiding his chest with your own. With your soles sliding against the wood floor, you start to slip into the hall, out of his proximity. You can hear him shuffling behind you in a quiet trail.
âObviously,â you say tightly. Youâve got to tick that off on the more acceptable things about Ryland. Heâs scholarly. Itâs a really good thing. Youâre scholarly, too. Decidedly, youâre thinking of being wholly scholarly together, and nothing else. Roommates-friends-study buddies will likely be for the best. âYou should probably shoot her a text or something. Courtesy and all,â you say to Ryland, a little more of a tease livening your tone.
He seems to think about it for a moment, running a hand through his hair. Then, Ryland murmurs, âYouâre good at e-mails, arenât you? Would you maybe help me draft it?â
You make an exerted effort to wander into the kitchen and make it to the fridge in search of leftovers. This leaves a good distance from him for you to think this all through. The opened fridge shoots a soft gust of cold air against your warmed face. You mutter under your breath, âItâs a sorry text, not a cold app.â You take the opportunity to peek over the door of the fridge at him.
Heâs got a bit of a pout on his face, something youâve really never seen before. His blonde hair casts a blurry shadow over his forehead. It conjures up a twisting feeling in your gut. You hate how easy it is for him to make you feel so obligated. You opt for taking a cold can of soda from the fridge instead (though you barely want to drink it). The condensation makes it slippery in your hand, and with a sigh, you shut the fridge. âIâll proofread it. Thatâs all youâre getting out of me.â
âYouâre the best,â Ryland says, shortly and simply, clapping his hands together in a bout of success. Heâs far too proud of himself, and you have to keep a strong will slipping past him, out of the kitchen and straight for the couch. âWhile youâre at it, my research proposal could use a second look-over.â
âDonât push it, Ry.â
you would not be able to PRY me OFF of grad school!ryland if i saw a sliver of his stomach ohh im still obsessed with this after the second read đââď¸đââď¸

Smut below cut!
The backlot is quiet this late. It's the kind of hush that only falls after wrap when the last crew trucks have rolled out and the big lights are killed. Just the low hum of distant generators and the occasional creak of scaffolding remain. Youâre still in your work clothes, black tactical pants, a fitted long-sleeve tee with the production logo, and your steel-toed boots, standing between two parked stunt vehicles under the dim security lamps.
Colt Seavers is leaning against the hood of a battered muscle car, arms crossed, that signature cocky grin lighting up his face even at 1 a.m. His flannel is half-unbuttoned from the last take, a smear of fake blood still on his collarbone. âCâmon, Coordinator,â he teases, voice warm and rough from shouting directions all day. âYouâve been riding our asses for three weeks straight. Thoughts on ryland hearing reader say some freaky ass shit about him to their friend thinking hes not around to hear it and literally almost collapsing when the turn around and hes just there like "đ§"
Like maybe their relationship is still fresh and new and things are still awkward between them too
Hi Anon! First of all, if you didnât know already, I love you! Your brain is amazing for coming up with this. I love this so much, itâs hilarious, and I can picture Ryland making that exact faceđđThank you for sending this in! I had fun expanding on this-
Youâve been seeing Ryland for a few months now. Itâs going well - well, in the fragile, careful way a relationship goes in its initial phase. He is sweet, constantly trying to be a âgood boyfriendâ but you can practically see the gears turning in his head as he overthinks every single move. Not that youâre any better. Terrified of overwhelming him, you purposely keep your affection to a minimum.
When you kiss, he spends the first ten seconds worrying over where his hands should be. Most of the time they just hover awkwardly in the air. Only after you murmur a soft, âRelax, Ryâ do his palms finally settle on your face or your waist. Even then, you can feel the slight, nervous tremble in his fingertips. You internally sigh every single time. You just want him to let go. You want him to take control.
Because, honestly, have you seen him? He is a ridiculously pretty sight. He has messy, dark-blonde hair and blue eyes framed by glasses that might as well be useless with the way he constantly peers over them. All of his awkwardness and doubt only vanish when he rambles about his science classes, or how much he loves teaching the kids but absolutely despises parent-teacher meetings.
Which brings you to now. You are sitting at a corner table in a quiet cafe, waiting for him. He texted a few minutes ago saying heâll be slightly late. You donât mind the wait, especially because your phone rings right after. Itâs your best friend, calling to catch up.
âSo, how are things with Ryland?â your friend asks after you finish swapping general life updates.
Your heart does a little flutter at the mere mention of his name. You sigh, leaning back in your chair. âItâs going really wellâ you say.
But your friend starts asking more digging, playful questions, and the dam breaks.
âHeâs just so shy, you know? Well, not shy in a typical way, just incredibly awkwardâ you vent, dropping your voice to a whisper, âhe kisses me so tentatively. God, I wish he would just stick his tongue down my throat without a careâ
That would have been fine. That is surface-level venting. But now that youâve started, the word vomit will not stop.
âOh my God, and his handsâ you continue, âtheyâre so feathery light when he touches me. How hard would it be for him to just push me against a wall and have his way with me?!â You donât wait for your friendâs reaction.
âAnd those glasses of his! He looks so hot in them, but honestly? Heâd look even better with those glasses on while heâs between my legsâ You take a sharp breath, âAnd the rambling! I love it, I really do, but I canât help but imagine him talking science to me while he fucks me. And the damn jackets he always wears, I just want to rip them right off of him, I mean seriousl-â
You stand up, intending to walk over to the counter to finally order your coffee. But the moment you spin around, the world comes to a sudden halt.
Ryland is standing right behind your chair.
He heard you. He heard every single word of the filthy thoughts you have about him.
Your heart rate shoots up. Your stomach drops instantly. Itâs exactly like the terrifying feeling on a rollercoaster right before the drop, except the drop itself isnât the scary part, itâs this agonising realisation of whatâs coming.
Your eyes widen in horror. You frantically hit the red button on your screen, cutting your friend off mid-sentence, and shove the phone away.
Your eyes lock onto Ryland. Behind the very glasses you just fantasised about, his blue eyes are wide and unblinking. His lips are parted in shock. He doesnât even seem to be breathing.
Did you actually break the man?
Mortification burns through your chest. He was already so awkward around you, and now you have mentally scarred him.
âUh...â You force your throat to work, your voice trembling, âRy?â
He is completely frozen. No blinking. No movement.
Fuck, you swear internally. Braving the awkwardness, you step closer into his space. Your fingers reach out, lightly brushing against the fabric of the jacket heâs wearing. Oh my God, you realise with a wave of panic, I didnât even leave the jacket out of it.
âHey. Ryâ you whisper again, putting a tiny bit of pressure on his sleeve.
A sharp inhale hitches in his chest. He finally blinks, suddenly snapped out of whatever psychological trauma you just inflicted on him. Now, he starts blinking rapidly, his chest heaving as his brain tries to process the data.
âRyland, Iâm so sorryâ you rush out, your face completely flushed, âcan you hear me?â
A small, barely audible, âHuh?â squeaks out of him.
âI...â he starts, his throat straining, âuh. That was...â
The brilliant school teacher, the man who can lecture seamlessly for hours about the universe, is incapable of forming a basic sentence.
âIâm so sorry, Ry. That was just...I was just talking nonsenseâ you trail off, desperate for an escape the embarrassment, âcan we...can we just forget it? Please?â
Ryland swallows hard. The frantic blinking stops. His eyes fixate on yours, a strange, focus suddenly replacing his shock.
âDid you mean it?â he asks, finally finding his voice.
Your breath hitches. You feel the heat radiating off your own cheeks, âNo, um-I mean, itâs just-â
âHeyâ He cuts you off. The stutter is gone, âBe honest with me. Itâs alrightâ
Your heart is beating so loudly that you are positive he can hear it in the cafe. When the silence stretches and you still canât find a lie convincing enough to save yourself, Ryland takes a slow step forward.
The nervous hesitation is gone. His hand moves with deliberation, his fingers wrapping around yours. There is no tremble in his fingertips this time. None at all.
He leans down slightly, his eyes locking onto yours behind his lenses.
âJust tell meâ he whispers, his voice dropping into a low tone that sends a shiver straight down your spine, âuse your wordsâ
Your knees go weak as his grip tightens. Yeah, you think, you might just get what you wanted.
ohhh soft dom ryland is coming out to play and i #needthatbadstyle LOL

Pairing: Simon (Iron Lung) x Ryland Grace (Project Hail Mary) x Reader
Word Count: 15,066 Type: One-Shot
Summary: Simon is a prisoner of the C.O.I. following the attack on Filament Station. You and Dr. Ryland Grace buy out his sentence because you two need help around the house and the lab. It would be a lot easier on Simon if you both treated him like the bad person he is. Instead you both show him kindness he's never had before, and he finds himself blurring the lines between what's proper and what's not.
Warnings: female reader insert (usage of You and she/her), usage of Y/n, nsfw, swearing, M/M/F threesome pwp, usage of nicknames (good boy, pretty boy, sunshine, darling, sweetheart, sugar, honey)

Hello:D just spilling my Henry thoughts
I really like the idea of Henry meeting a more optimistic reader and not liking their energy at first, lashing out towards them when they try to get a little too close or help him. But then slowly falling for the reader so he gets a little softer. Letting his guard down, finally allowing himself to be loved, and becoming putty in their hands.
Fire Escape
(Henry Letham x Neighbour! Reader)
ohh i loved seeing the vignettes of these two!!
i like to call this genre of fic "i needed to purge this from my brain"
rhinestone cowboy - human!ken x fem!reader
summary: after travelling to the real world to find himself, ken ends up joining the travelling carnival as a rodeo clown/stable boy. he definitely wasn't attracted to the carnival at first because of the horses. no way. and he definitely doesn't decide to stick around because of you...A horse rider/trainer/performer that is quite simply the most beautiful thing he's ever seen. nope. definitely not.
tags: no tags. only vibes. and fluff.

Ken stood off to the side of the arena, adjusting his costume and ignoring the heckling kids behind him. The handlers would be releasing the bulls any second now, as was part of your routine. Any second, he would have to go back out into the dirt and trampled grass as a sparkling distraction in case a bull got too close. But for now, he got to watch you.
ken you've ensnared me ohhh i love this so much!

the blind date trap (2)
pairing. coltland twins au ; ryland x reader x colt
synopsis. you go on a second date with (real) ryland, and colt is devastated. his twin brother might be falling for the love of his life! (11.5k words)
note. part 2 is officially out! thanks so much to cas for letting me talk on and on about this silly fic and running thru ideas w me, and to all my mutuals too who offered help. this is kind of a mess! so good luck! lmk what u thought!
part 1 is here
The first thing Coltâs conscious brain is able to discern is the faint sound of humming.
It echoes through the apartment, filling in for the persistent buzz of static. And it continues to pollute Coltâs hearing until heâs pushed himself out of his bed.
The clock reads 5:34pm. Itâs been 2 hours since the man collapsed for a nap. Ryland must be home, itâs the only way to account for the hum thatâs still whizzing and interrupting the what-would-have-been-silence. But, his brother doesnât hum. Uncharacteristic for him, even.
So, who was making all the noise this late in the afternoon in their apartment?
The responsible thing wouldâve been to grab a makeshift weapon just in case. Instead, Colt follows the sound. Itâs not entirely unfamiliar, so any form of fear would have to remain in its dormant state.
The humming leads him to Ryland, standing in front of their shared bathroom mirrorâfreshly showered, sporting a button-down shirt, and apparently fixing his hair.
âJesus, whatâs with the outfit?â
this little duology will forever have my heart oooh my godd! colt my d1 yearner you will always be famous to me!!
ughhh i love how you write colt so so much like everything is so visceral for him because he's a lover boy through and through! ugh the reveal scene was so good (i love a good dramatic confession in the rain!) ugh i have no notes on this sue this was perfection!!
^^ this is my favorite holland look btw, since I know everyone was wondering
When you ask Holland to let you suck his cock while itâs soft, heâs not quite sure he heard you right.
You have to repeat yourself three times for him to finally understand- or maybe he just needed to hear you say it that many times for him to believe it.
oh holland march... #needthat
