There are a few perks to working at a school.
For one, as a kindergarten teacher, you get to watch your sweet little ducklings as they progress through elementary school and move on up to junior high. You take your job seriously, and between scheduled nap times and learning the alphabet, you recognize that you do have a hand in shaping the minds of the next generation — the ones that your boyfriend will eventually teach when they reach 8th grade.
And, second to getting to put your degree to use and being in the field you've always dreamt of, seeing Mr. Harrington, your boyfriend of four months, throughout the workday, isn't too bad of a perk, either.
The first time you saw Hawkins Elementary was on your orientation day. It was a few weeks before your kindergarteners were slated to start school, and Principal Campbell was giving you a tour of the building. Knowing how small of a town Hawkins is, you weren't shocked by the school's lack of resources or modest size, nor were you deterred in offering the best education you could. If anything, it just made you even more excited to get started.
And then, you reached the middle school building. There weren't too many teachers in yet, but when you passed by a classroom on the second floor, you noticed the door was wide open. When you peaked inside, there was a tall man hunched over the same old wooden desk every room had, a pencil behind his ear as he shuffled through some papers. He had the radio on — it sounded like it was WSQK 94.5 — and was mumbling along to Mariah Carey's "Emotions".
"Oh, this is Steve Harrington, our health and sexual education teacher," Principal Campbell says when he sees you peering into the room. "Steve, this is one of our new kindergarten teachers."
Steve, apparently, looks up with slightly disheveled hair and wide eyes framed by adorable wirey glasses. He grins and comes out from behind his desk, then leans forward to shake your hand.
"Nice to meet you," he greets, "Kindergarten, huh? That can't be an easy gig."
"I could say the same for you," you laugh. "I'll take little kids over teaching pre-teens about condoms any day."
Steve laughs and raises his hands in mock defense. "Listen, someone's gotta do it."
"Steve also coaches our elementary and middle school baseball teams." Principal Campbell adds, and you swear you see Steve's cheeks tinge the slightest hue of pink.
"Really? That's awesome."
Steve shrugs, bashful, "The games are fun and the kids love it. You should come to one sometime."
Naturally, you attend the first one.
It's on a Thursday afternoon, an hour after dismissal, two weeks into the school year. Your students are sweet and endearing, a group of 25 five-year-olds who can't make it through the morning without a nap yet, but are already on their way to learning so much more about the world around them.
Apparently, Steve doesn't go by Mr. Harrington when he's coaching baseball, because you constantly hear his little team of middle schoolers refer to him as "Coach Steve". When he notices you sitting in the bleachers with sunglasses shielding your eyes from the mid-afternoon rays, he waves excitedly, which only makes your stomach twist in the best kind of knots.
You wave back, grinning, and watch as he mouths "you came!".
"Of course!" you mouth back.
That evening, the Hawkins Roadrunners win their first game 3-2. Steve takes them out for ice cream, so you don't get to catch up with him afterwards.
Sure enough, though, the next morning, when you're setting up your classroom for another day, he stops by on his way in.
(Your room is very much not on the way to his.)
"Hey," Steve greets, leaning against your doorway with folded arms. "Thanks again for coming yesterday. It was really nice to see you there."
"Yeah, well, I have to come out and support, right?" you tease, bumping your hip against your desk.
He shrugs, a smirk on his face. "So, here's the thing..."
"Oh, there's a thing now?"
Steve laughs.
"Now that you came to our first game and helped us win, I think you might be our good luck charm."
"What if you're just a really good coach?"
"I mean, it's definitely that, too," Steve grins. "But... maybe my coaching is that much better when you're in the stands, y'know?"
You're coy beneath his gaze, but the inside of your body feels like it's on fire. You're a teenage girl again, internally squealing at the realization that her crush may like her back.
"You drive a hard bargain, Coach." you hum, pretending to consider his proposal.
"How about this," he's crowding your space now, and you feel entirely too overwhelmed by his scent, his looks, his everything— "If we win our next game and you're really our good luck charm, I'll take you out as a thank you."
You tilt your head. "What happens if you lose?"
Steve considers this. "If I'm being honest, I hadn't thought that far."
You laugh and twist your body to grab a pen from the mug on your desk, then a piece of construction paper. You scribble your landline number in blue glitter ink.
"What if you just take me out regardless?" you ask, folding the paper in two and handing it to him.
"Yeah?" he smiles, gratefully accepting the small token of mutual attraction. You nod. "Alright then. I'll call you tonight."
You bite your lip, trying not to grin to yourself as Steve walks out of your classroom. When he's gone, you busy yourself with organizing some worksheets, even though you feel like you could explode into fireworks.
"By the way," Steve's head suddenly pops back in, making you jump. He laughs. "This is the first time a girl's ever given me her number using a glitter pen."
You snort. "Yeah, and what about it?"
"Nothing!" he exclaims. "I love it. I hope you never stop using them."
(You haven't. And every time you leave a note in Steve's classroom, your handwriting framed in pretty glitter ink, it always makes him smile.)

When Steve went into the tent after Y/N he saw her tense up. It made him want to take her in his arms and confess all his feelings right there and then, but he knew that she deserved better. She deserved the romantic gesture that he was planning in his head. So far, he had been as far from romantic as one could possibly be and he wanted to do this right. When she turned around towards him, Steve opened his mouth to tell her, anyway, but the fear shone in her eyes. Did she think he was going to break it off? Suddenly it felt as if the air in the tent had disappeared and Steve could only think of one thing to do. He pulled her close and kissed her. At first, she seemed to not respond and he was just about to pull back when she pulled him closer and they ended up laying down, with Steve on top. He could hear her moan and it just made him deepen the kiss. His hand found its way under her shirt and t-shirt. Her warm skin felt like silk under his rough hands. Then they hear a scream and break apart. Y/N is looking at him with big eyes and he is looking back at her. The scream is heard again and they bolt out of the tent.
The sight before your eyes almost makes you want to laugh, but you don’t. Amora is standing on a big rock while Lorelei is standing on a log of wood. Both women were white in the face and pointing at something by the side of their tent. As Steve and you walked closer you saw that it was a snake. As you got closer you saw that while it was mostly black and tan it had some red streaks in it.
“It’s not dangerous,” you say and walk toward the snake.
“It’s a snake,” Lorelei whines and look around.
“Yeah, a garter snake,” Steve looks at the snake. Nobody seemed to do anything. All eyes were on Steve, but he just looked at the snake. Was he afraid of it? As you inched toward the snake its keeled scales with its blues strips almost glittered in the sunshine. You never have been a fan of snakes, but you were not afraid. At least not since it was not poisonous. In fact with the sun on the scales it almost looked beautiful, and its little face was almost cute. You inched forward slowly, not caring about everyone around you. Their voices just disappeared. When you were close enough you lifted the snake in its tail and held it up. It was not really big and it did not really seem to care that it was lifted in the air. As you started walking towards the wooden area you saw that all eyes were on you. Nat was smirking, Peter had his mouth open a bit, and Amora and Lorelei had their hands over their mouths, but what stuck was Steve’s heated look. The admiration and heat in his eyes made a shiver go down your back.
After you have put the snake in the wooden area and watched it slither away you turn around. Steve’s eyes are still on you, which makes you smile. As you walk towards him you hear Lorelai and Amora.
“I can’t believe she touched that snake,” Amora shudders at the thought.
“Very unladylike,” Lorelai shakes. You ignore it, but apparently, it was not only you that had heard it. Nat lets out an angry huff.
“I think that was bad ass as hell,” Daisy crosses her arms.
“I agree,” Melinda nods along with all the other people.
“And to think,” Steve smiles, his eyes never leaving yours. “She is all mine.” This makes your face burn with heat and you look down on the ground biting your lips.
“Well, she definitely is something else,” Thor looks at you and Loki nods. Lorelai snorted before she and Amora walked to their tent. Steve still looks at you and the intensity in his eyes makes you want to blush, but Peter clearing his throat and telling everyone to go back to packing snaps you out of it. Amora and Lorelai go into their tent and close it. You hoped they would get going soon, so you did not have to wait on them again.
Steve walks over and talks to Frank, keeping their voices low and you see Steve looking back towards you. Even though you want to go over there to him you force your feet to go back to your tent and pack it up. You start with your sleeping bags, pulling them apart and rolling them up. As you are finishing that, Steve comes in and gives you a hand. He pushes you playfully in the side with his body, and just like that all the doubts you had about how he felt after you blurted out that you love him disappears. It was hard to explain, but something in your heart makes you feel like together you would be able to face it all. A big help with that was that Steve was not withdrawing from you, in fact it almost felt as he was pulling you closer. When the two of you start packing up the tent, Steve uses the time to pull you into his arms and give you a kiss. Nat and Peter were packing up their tent and did not notice, but what were they going to say. They were behind the whole fake dating and Steve seemed to want to take every chance to be near you.
Hours later you were hot and sweaty after yet another day on the back of a horse, but you had an amazing day with beautiful views and time with great people, plus Lorelai and Amora. Right now your gaze was looking on the man you could call your boyfriend, he was sitting easy in his saddle and talking to Daniel and Leo. Pointing at something in the distance. It all made your heart flutter. You started thinking of the idea of trying to get a job out here. Sam would need a nurse and staying here in Montana became more and more appealing by the minute. Maybe you could convince Nat to move back here with you. After looking to your left on where Nat was riding and laughing with Peter, it did not seem like it would be something she would object to. Nat fit here, with her family and maybe that was what they both needed. The calm and clean air here. She decided there and then that she would talk to Steve about it first chance she got, to see what he thought. Hopefully he thought it was a great idea.
Steve pulled back a bit from the other people to get a look at the situation in front of him. Lorelai and Amora were trying their hardest to get Thor and Loki's attention by riding between them and flirting. Today Lorelais t-shirt said: Support America, fuck a cowboy, while Amoras said: Cowboy pillows. As if it was already obvious that they were just here to find someone to bed. They still tried to flirt a lot with him, but he only had eyes for one person. Y/N. He hoped that they would get it through their heads soon and leave him alone.
His eyes found Y/N as they always seem to do. She was talking with Melinda and Phil. They were laughing at something she was saying and the smile on her face looked happy and relaxed.
Wherever he looked, everyone seemed to be enjoying himself and he closed in on Jemma and Daisy talking about cowboy movies. Steve preferred to read over watching movies, but he had watched a few and were just going to join the conversation when they started to talk about movie kisses. Steve decided to leave before he was drawn into that kind of discussion when Daisy turned to him.
“Steve,” she looked at him and smiled. “Just the man we need.” Steve squirmed a bit at that. Jemma giggled and winked at Steve, making him feel like this topic was not going to be something he would enjoy talking about.
“Yes,” he cleared his throat and told himself he needed to get this over with.
“You know in cowboy movies where the hero urges his horse closer to the heroine's horse and he leans over and kisses her,” Daisy smiles at him and Steve nods.
“How does that work?” Jemma blushes and looks in the direction of Leo who is riding and talking to Daniel.
“What do you mean?” Steve blinks at them. They did know how to kiss.
“Well, how do the horses feel about that? How do the people keep their balance and so on,” Daisy shrugged her shoulders.
“The horses are trained, much like mine is, to listen to the rider and do their job,” Steve answers truthfully. “And the balance is not a problem, you are still sitting in the saddle and being secure.” Jemma sighs and looks over at Leo again.
“It just seems so romantic,” she blushes a bit and looks down at her hands. “I would love to try it.”
“Me too,” Daisy agrees and looks over at Daniel. “Can you show us?” Jemma nods at that question and looks poignant over at Y/N. Steve starts to shake his head, but then thinks better of it. He loved kissing Y/N, so why not. She was his girlfriend and he did not think she would mind it one bit.
“Okay,” he agreed and the girls let out a squill. It gave them a couple of looks and Steve nodded in Y/N direction seeing a smile on her lips. “Just watch us.” Jemma and Daisy nodded, and Steve rode over towards Y/N.
“Hi Sweetheart,” Steve smiled at Y/N after he had said his hello to Melinda and Phil. Just as they guessed that something was going to happen, they both pulled back. In fact, if Steve had not been so concentrated on Y/N, he would probably have seen that almost everyone pulled back to watch their interaction.
“Hi handsome,” Y/N smiled brightly at him and it made his heart do a double beat.
“Daisy and Jemma wanted a demonstration,” Steve smirked at her and she looked over his shoulder at the two women in question.
“Oh,” Y/N said just as Steve leaned forward to kiss her. Their horses moved together, walking slowly forward as Steve gripped her chin in his grip and let the kiss deepen. Y/N let out a small moan that made Steve smile into the kiss.
Jemma and Daisy started whooping and soon others joined. Steve breaked away from the kiss and Y/N blushed clearly seeing all the people's reaction. He winked at Y/N and she smiled up at him. He leaned a bit closer and just for her eyes he whispered. “If there was any confusion, I love you too.” Y/N eyes widened for a second, before she gripped a hold of his shirt and drew him towards her again for one more kiss, not caring that everyone seemed to still keep their eyes on them. It was not how he had planned on telling her, but this moment seemed to be the right time. Especially since he needed her to know and not get the wrong idea about what he was feeling.
Nat looked on when Steve rode up to Y/N and the smile on his face was telling. He was up to something. She turned to Peter and nodded in their direction. “Lets look at this,” She smiled and Peter nodded. What was Steve going to do? Nat felt her mouth opening when Steve leaned over and captured Y/N mouth. It was as she was showered with cold water and she woke up and saw everything in front of her.
“Oh fuck,” Nat mumbled when she could get her head around it. Everyone was whooping and cheering. Steve leaned closer again and she saw his mouth moving, and then Y/N pulled him close to him again.
“See, this is what I mean,” Peter nodded towards them. “They need to get together.” Nat let out a small laugh.
“You are so blind, Peter, just like I am,” Nat shook her head. Peter frowned at her.
“They are already together.”
“What! When! How!” Peter was just about to head over there and interrogate them, but Nat took a hold of his reins and shook her head. Looking around everyone was out of earshot “Let them continue with their fake real relationship. We don’t need to have this conversation here with all these people.” Peter swallowed and nodded.
“Hot damn,” he muttered after a while. “You know what this means.” Nat looked at her smiling little brother and over to her big brother who seemed as if he was floating on clouds instead of riding his horse.
“What?” Nat smiled at the sight, feeling happy. Maybe Y/N and she should move here to Montana together. Y/N could be with Steve and she could be with Bucky, and still be close to each other.
“Y/N could be your sister for real, through marriage,” Peter squealed. Nat liked the sound of that. More than she could put in words.
“Then it's just for Bucky and you to get back together for real and you can all move back here.” At that Nat wiped her head around to her little brother.
“What,” he smirked. “Who do you think you are fooling slipping out in the middle of the night and then coming back hours later smelling like him.” Nat opened her mouth to say something, anything. But Peter just smirked and sipped his mouth together and rode on, leaving her in his dust. She had not noticed that she had pulled to a stop and they were starting to get behind everyone. She pushed her heels into Major's side and took after her brother, maybe he was more aware than she thought, not that it was strange since he had seen something between Steve and Y/N which she might not have noticed if he had not pointed it out.
In front of her she saw Jemma lean over and kiss Leo just like Y/N and Steve had done. Leo's face turned red, but he still depended on the kiss. It looked so cute, and she saw how Y/N took a photo of it. Then Daniel rode over to Daisy and just planted one on her. Daisy laughed out a happy giggle, before Daniel kissed her again, making it longer this time. Y/N took pictures of that as well. Then when Nat thought that all the kissing was over, she saw to her right how Melinda rode over to Phil and nodded at him. He nodded back and they both leaned towards each other and then they kissed. It started sweet and then turned hotter. Nat looked away to see Amara and Lorelai took their aim at Loki and Thor. Amara rode up on Loki's left side while Lorelai rode up on Thor's right side. They started to flirt with the two brothers, overly sexual and even leaning a bit towards them. But both Thor and Loki ignored them. Then when the women started to whine and probably begging about getting kisses and leaning over again, Loki and Thor shared a look and rode away a bit faster. Sweet Pea and Candy started to walk closer to each other, since that was how Amara and Lorelai were steering them. Nat saw how the women had their eyes closed, and she did not make a sound. This was going to be funny, or so she hoped. Nat looked over and saw that Y/N also saw what was about to happen and the gleam in her eyes told Nat all she needed just as Y/N lifted her camera again towards them. Nat looked over and sure enough the women kissed and it took a while before they opened their eyes which grew amusingly big, before they both steered the horses away from each other. Not a word was said and Nat needed to keep a laugh in. Well at least they got a kiss out of it. As Nat looked over at Y/N she saw that she clearly got a shot at it all. This was something Nat wanted to see over and over again.
Amara and Lorelai were surprisingly quiet the rest of the day. No whining or complaining, which felt strange. But Steve decided it was good, maybe they were too tired to moan about everything as they have done before. They arrived at where they were going to spend the night. Frank was already there, since he had taken a closer road to get there. The air smelled of something heady and earthy, making Steve's mouth water. Then he looked over at Y/N dismounting and his mouth started watering for another hunger. After his confession earlier and the kissing, she had been glancing at him and he at her. All he wanted now was to pitch the tent and crawl in there with her and finish what they had started. It all kind of felt like the longest foreplay he ever had, at the glance she was sending him now made him want to dismount and claim her mouth again so that everyone saw it. Instead of doing that, Steve dismounted and started taking care of Shadowfax, just as he wanted everyone else to do with their horses. It was something that his father had taught him from the minute Steve knew what a horse was, that you took care of your horse, or any animal first, especially out like this in the wilderness. They needed water and tending.
Y/N gaze found Steve as he led Shadowfax over to where she stood taking care of Storm. He smiled at her and heat spread through her entire body. Just as she was thinking of moving forward and kissing him, Nat came over. Since she did not know you were not really faking a relationship it was probably good that you had not kissed Steve, since everyone else was busy with the horses. Steve seemed to understand where your mind went since he winked at you. He freaking winked at you and all you wanted to be in his arms and do a lot of things you could not do in front of his sister.
“Anyone else loving the silence from the two trouble makers,” Nat smiled and looked over at Lorelai and Amora.
“Maybe they are just tired,” Steve shrugged and continued to tend to Shadowfax. Nat and you shared a look knowing exactly why they were quiet, and barely looking at each other. What if this was their lesbian or bi awakening and after this they would be a couple? Or maybe you were just romanticizing everything now that you were in love and happy. To be honest, those two deserved each other, and maybe they could spend their time being miserable together.
“Are you going to tell him?” Nat whispered and you shook your head. Since you had photographic evidence of the kiss, maybe it would all come out at the end of the trip, when you handed everyone their travel memories. It made you smile. Nat smirked and Nat went back to tending to Major.
A few hours later, Daniel walked over to Steve where he looked over the camp, feeling happy and content. Steve smiled at him and Daniel looked a bit awkward.
“Could we talk, privately,” Daniel almost whispers looking around. Steve liked the man a lot and nodded, before leading him a bit away from the camp. When they were a bit away, Daniel looked around before turning to Steve.
“I have a favor to ask,” Daniel looked almost unsure and Steve put a hand on his arm.
“Just spit it out,” Steve chuckled. Daniel always seemed so calm and together, this was not a side of the man that Steve had seen before.
“I want to propose to Daisy on this trip,” Daniel tossed out, then he took a deep breath and after that the words flowed out fast. “I was planning on doing it when we came back home, you know over a fancy dinner, candlelight and flowers. But seeing her here, in nature and all the spectacular views around us all the time, it just feels right. She has already said how she thinks this trip is romantic and different from anything else we have done. How it's a memory for life and how much closer she feels to me here.” Steve just stood there nodding at what Daniel was saying and his thoughts immediately went to how he would propose to Y/N. He forced those thoughts away from his mind and concentrated on Daniel. “What I am trying to get out is, would it be okay if I proposed here on your land?”
“Of course,” Steve smiled and he saw how Daniel's shoulders dropped a bit as if he relaxed. Daniel looked away at Daisy where she stood talking to Jemma, Melinda and Y/N.
“Do you have any suggestions where I could do it?” Daniel looked at Steve quickly before looking over at Daisy again. “I just want to make it as memorable as possible for her and a bit private.” Steve nodded and thought of the route he had mapped out with Bucky.
“Two days from now, we will be setting up camp on a hill that looks over my lands and the sunset will be amazing from there. There are a few more private spots over there that would work.” Steve kind of scratched his jaw. He wanted to help his new friend and make this special for him. Daniel nodded. “That sounds amazing and unforgettable.”
“You could also ask Y/N to take photos of the moment from a hiding place so you can save the moment,” Steve continued and looked over at Y/N again.
“What if Daisy says no,” Daniel looks down at the ground. Steve shook his head.
“I am pretty sure she won't say no,” Steve put a hand on Daniel's shoulder. “I see the way she looks at you and it's a look of complete and utter love and devotion.” Daniel started smiling at that.
“She is the love of my life,” Daniel breathes out. “I was in a relationship before I met her. It was a disaster and even though I did not really love her, not compared to how I feel for Daisy. Having her leave me for her childhood sweetheart hurt more than I thought I could bear. I was not looking for anything when I met Daisy, but something about her just pulled me in.” Steve smiled knowing exactly what Daniel was talking about. He had not been looking for anything and then Y/N came into his life and changed everything for the better. She was like sunshine after years of darkness.
“It took a while before I got the courage to kiss her the first time and when I did, she leaped up in my arms and kissed me back with so much heat that we almost fell to the ground. Then she pulled back, still in my arms saying she's been waiting for me to make a move, since she knew of my history and did not want to put pressure on me.” Steve chuckles.
“Sounds like Daisy,” he nodded. Daniel looked over at her and smiled.
“She says that I am the steady calm present she needs, and she is my wild wind of fresh air that I need.” Daniel looked at Steve and it was nothing but happiness in his face.
“Sounds like a match made in heaven," Steve commented.
“Much like you and Y/N,” Daniel nodded. Steve was taken back by the man's observations, but at the same time it was not like he was wrong.
“Yeah,” Steve agreed.
“I heard she said that she lives in New York, like Daisy and me,” Daniel continued. “But nurses are needed everywhere.” Steve nodded at that as well.
“Yeah they are.”
“But cattle ranchers are not really something that is needed in New York City,” Daniel smirked.
“No, cattle in any part of that city would not go over well,” Steve nodded again, looking at Y/N.
“Maybe it's time to ask her to move here,” Daniel put an arm around Steve's shoulder.
“You are right,” Steve relaxed and shook his head. How would Nat react to all of this? Him being head over heels for her best friend. Wanting to spend his future with Y/N. He hoped Nat would be okay with it, maybe even happy for them. Hope also bloomed in his chest that it also could lead to Nat moving back and getting back together with Bucky, who he was a hundred percent she belonged to.
They talked a bit more about the proposal and how Steve could help, just as they were about to go back to the group Y/N came over to them.
“Hi,” she smiled at them and Steve tipped back his hat and claimed her lips. Y/N made a small surprised sound, before she placed a hand on his chest, stoking it up and down. Before the kiss could go further, Daniel cleared his throat.
“Mmm,” Y/N breathed out. “Sorry about that.” She looked down on the ground and blushed.
“Never apologize for being in love,” Daniel smiled at Y/N and it made her look up. Steve pulled her to his side and placed an arm over her shoulder.
“Its good that you came over.” Daniel continues to talk. “I want to ask for a favour, and its a secret.” Daniel glanced over at Daisy and Y/N let out a small laugh.
“Something to do with your amazing girlfriend,” Y/N guessed, both Steve and Daniel nodded.
“I want to propose to Daisy on this trip and Steve has agreed to help,” Daniel chuckled when he saw the happiness in Y/N's face.
“Plese let me hide and take pictures,” Y/N blurted out, before Daniel even asked. Steve started to laugh, which made a few people look their way.
“That was just what I was going to ask,” Daniel smirked and Y/N nodded.
“I will do it,” Y/N beamed. “When is it happening?”
“Two days from now,” Steve told her. “Its a great view of the mountain in the background and the moon over. The weather should be clear so we will see the stars.”
“That will be romantic,” Y/N looked from Steve to Daniel. “Could Frank get some champagne?”
“That should not be a problem,” Steve pressed a kiss to Y/N forehead..
“What if she says no,” Daniel looked over at Daisy again.
“There is no way she will say no,” Y/N was adamant. “She loves you and this will make her happy. I am sure about it,” Daniel smiled at her, having her confirm what Steve had already said seemed to make him even more at ease. They talked for a bit more, before Frank announced that dinner was ready and they all went back to the group, sitting down in front of the fire. Steve sat on Y/N left side close enough that they were always touching. Daniel and Daisy sat to Steves right and they were just as close, Daniel stealing the occasional kiss from Daisy. The atmosphere was happy and relaxed, Amora and Lorelai still being quiet.
You looked at Nat on your right side and saw that your friend had a smile on her face, occasionally looking at her clock. What was she up to? Whatever it was you hoped it was something to do with Bucky. Those lingering looks they had shared since Nat had arrived were filled with love and longing. Nat deserved true love and happiness, and you had a feeling that Bucky could give her that. It also helped that Nat seemed more at ease than she did in New York City. This seemed to be a better environment for her than the stress in the city. Maybe it was time for a change for you both. You looked up at Steve at your side, but he was already looking at her. The heat in his eyes, looked like promises of another unforgettable night together in their tent. It sent a shiver of anticipation through your whole body, wishing that it was time to go to the tent now. It almost looked like he knew exactly where your mind was and that smirk made you want to crawl up in his lap and kiss him right there. Instead you leaned closer and pressed a kiss to his chin.
“Y/n can you sing some songs again,” Peter begged to the left of Nat and everyone agreed, well not Amora and Lorelai, but they at least kept quiet. Frank chuckled and went to get his guitar.
“Any requests?” you asked and a few were tossed out. You moved over to Frank and talked about which songs you both knew. Frank and you decided to start with one of his favorites, Wagon Wheel. The night continued with laughing and music. You felt happy and content out here beneath the stars and with your new friends and your boyfriend.

The clock struck 7 PM, and you inhaled sharply, a huge smile overtaking your features. You and Steve had planned a date night tonight for your first anniversary, and he had promised to take you to Enzo’s, the fancy Italian place that's normally too out of budget for you. So, for the occasion, you pulled out a dress from the deep, dark depths of your closet that hasn’t seen the light of day in approximately three years but somehow miraculously fits. You paired that with a stunning pair of high heels, styled your hair, which you rarely did, put on makeup and jewelry, and felt and looked quite possibly the most put-together and gorgeous you had in the entire trajectory of your relationship.
Now, you didn’t normally care about what people thought of you. But tonight, you really wanted Steve to see you. You wanted that lovestruck, awed look to cross his features when he took you in, the one that always sent the butterflies in your stomach into a frenzy. You wanted to see him floundering as he thought about what words might best convey his sentiments, and you wanted him to come up short. And at the end of the night, you wanted him to hold you like you were precious, to worship you with reverence like you were the only deity he’d bow down to while he slowly moved in and out of you. You wanted to hear the quiet praises in your ear right before he came.
You were getting giddy just thinking about it.
It's 7:15 PM now, and there are still no signs of his familiar beamer pulling up outside. Normally, this wouldn’t bother you. Steve had never been the most punctual, so you weren’t too worried. He had been late to dates in the past by 5 or 10 minutes, and he always apologized profusely afterwards, even when you said it was alright. However, lately, he had been cancelling more and more dates, missing your calls at night, and disappearing for days without an explanation, leaving you to imagine the absolute worst.
By the time the clock struck 7:30, the heels had come off, and your feet were propped up on the coffee table. Now you were growing upset. Questions like ‘did he forget?’ were starting to swirl in your mind, but you did your best to push them aside. Steve wouldn’t forget, right? He’d always remembered the most trivial days, like the exact date you met (he’d gotten you the teddy that sat on your bed) and your first kiss (he’d taken you to a picnic near the same spot where you kissed), so surely he’d remember your anniversary. And even if he had been acting suspicious the past few weeks, he’d show up tonight. Tonight was an important night. He wouldn’t miss it…right?
However, the more you watched the hands of the clock turn farther from 7, the less sure you became. Hurt started to rear its ugly head past the 8 PM horizon, but you refused to cry. By the time the sun had fully set on your date night excitement, you were more angry than anything. You changed into your pajamas, then played the stereo in your room while lying on your bed and staring at the ceiling. You were grateful the house was empty since Joyce was on a date with Hopper, Jonathan probably with Nancy and Will at the Wheelers’ house. You were happy to be alone. No risk of having to explain your swollen, red eyes or puffy face or tear-stained cheeks.
Not that anyone really bothered asking even when they were home. Most days you felt invisible in front of your own family, partially why you were so excited about tonight: being celebrated was a luxury only afforded to your brothers in this house for the past few years. Even your graduation was given minimal attention, barely acknowledged, and you’d ended up cutting a small cupcake alone in your room.
How could Steve do this? He had been talking about this date for weeks! About how he was going to treat you like a queen the way you deserved, how he’d been saving up from his job at Family Video so you’d be able to enjoy a nice dinner without having to feel guilty about the price of whatever you were ordering (of course, you had agreed to split the bill 50-50 still. “It's your anniversary too, Stevie. You deserve to be celebrated too,” you had explained, and Steve had pretended his eyes didn’t gloss over at that), and now, he’d just…forgotten.
You had also gotten him a gift you had spent days making. A scrapbook with basically the entire trajectory of your relationship, complete with the wrapper of the gum that sparked your first conversation when he asked for a piece in class, to the tickets to the drive-in movie you two watched two weeks ago, pictures of you both taken on Jonathan’s camera, developed by you, some taken in photo booths, and some journal entries you had written when your relationship was progressing. It was the rawest, most vulnerable you had ever been with Steve, but he deserved to know how special he is to you. How being in this relationship had healed a part of you damaged by years of being sidelined by your mom in favour of your brothers.
Tears slid down your cheeks as you looked at the scrapbook lying on your side table. You had planned to give it to him later tonight when he dropped you back home. You were going to invite him in, since it was unlikely anyone would be back until pretty late, and you two would probably celebrate some more; then you’d give him the scrapbook, explain the significance behind it, and you’d talk until he had to leave.
That obviously wasn’t happening anymore.
You didn’t realize you had fallen asleep in the pit of your hurt and betrayal until three taps at your window roused you. You squinted, forcing your tear-stuck lashes open groggily, blinking to clear your view enough to glance at the clock on the wall. It was nearly 12 A.M. You listened for a second at the house, but the silence replied that nobody was home yet.
The three taps demanded your attention again, and you pulled yourself out of bed to draw back the curtains. You knew who it was even before you drew the curtains. It wasn’t the first time Steve had shown up in the middle of the night for a quick make-out and cuddle session via the thick pipe running along the length of the house and through your window. You drew back your curtains to reveal a very guilty-looking Steve, but you were so incredibly angry and hurt that even his puppy eyes couldn’t thaw the ice.
You debated for a minute whether to let him in at all. It was as if Steve could read the internal conflict on your face and somehow, his face became even more guilty, if that was even possible. He gave you his best pleading eyes to get you to open the window, and in the end, your curiosity got the better of you. You wanted to know what was more important than your anniversary, so you slowly opened the window.
Steve looked relieved for a second, then quickly squeezed through.
You stepped back, settling on the edge of the bed with your arms crossed and glaring at him. Steve knew he was in deep shit, so the smile disappeared from his face pretty quickly.
“I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry for missing our anniversary,” he started immediately.
The first thing you noticed was that he was still in the clothes he usually wears to work: blue jeans and a polo. Your eyes dropped to the bouquet in his hands. Rumpled, messily packaged, with blue roses and lilies – your favourite. You might have felt a flutter in your heart if it weren’t for the third, and the most gut-wrenching of it all: there was a lingering scent of perfume on him. Not his for sure. It was too flowery. Not your perfume, either. Too sweet for your taste, but perfect for someone else's.
You looked at him in utter betrayal. Another apology had already made its way up to his lips, but you spoke before he could.
“You were with Nancy,” you stated, voice slightly catching on her name. All the fear from the past few weeks, all the missed calls and unexcused absences compounded with the betrayal of your missed anniversary, started boiling. Had he been with her all those times as well? How long had it been going on? Were you just too naive to believe someone like Steve Harrington would genuinely be interested in someone like you?
All the colour immediately drained from his face.
He took a tentative step forward. “Doll, I can explain,” he started carefully.
You turned your gaze away from his, unable to keep all the intrusive thoughts out of your head. You knew, realistically, that faintly smelling like her perfume didn’t necessarily mean he'd done anything with her. But you couldn’t help the dread pooling in your chest, the images that covered your field of vision.
“We were just hanging out. That’s all,” he explained, stepping closer.
You whipped your head around to face him, eyes wide and blazing in disbelief. “On our anniversary?! You were hanging out with another girl when you were supposed to meet me for a date?”
Steve grimaced. “Okay, I know that sounds bad, but I swear I wouldn’t have gone if it wasn’t urgent-”
“Oh, what? She needed to be dicked down that desperately?” You knew that was a cheap shot, that Steve wouldn’t do something like that, but the anger and betrayal had created a thick cloud cover over reason and logic at the moment.
Steve physically stepped back, eyes immediately glossing over. “That’s not fair,” he whispered, looking down. “You know I would never cheat on you.”
“Do I?” you retorted immediately. “Because from where I’m standing, my boyfriend has been cancelling dates for the past few weeks, has been missing our calls every night, and has been disappearing for days without notice, only to come back with some bullshit excuse. And now, the cherry on top, he shows up on our anniversary five hours late, and smells like his ex-girlfriend. So tell me, Steve, how do I know you’re not fucking your ex behind my back?”
He floundered, absolutely bewildered by your accusations but not knowing how to dispute them. “We went to that drive-in movie two weeks ago!” he retorted.
You scoffed. “You’re right,” you replied sarcastically. “One distracted movie totally makes up for all the problems we’ve been having!”
Steve pinched the bridge of his nose, sighing in defeat. “I’m sorry, okay? What more do you want me to say?”
You stood up from the bed, arms falling to your sides. “I want you to tell me the truth about why you weren’t there tonight and why you’ve been acting the way you have for the past few weeks.” You looked at him as he processed this and remained silent still, which made you cock an eyebrow. “Steven Harrington, if you don’t want to be with me anymore, be a fucking man and say it. Don’t play these games with me.”
You saw the panic in his eyes at that. “Of course I want to be with you!” and you thought you’d finally have some answers, but then Steve hung his head. “I can’t tell you,” he whispered.
Tears welled in your eyes. He was cheating, wasn’t he?
“Why not?” you whispered.
“I-it’ll put you in danger. I can’t do that, doll,” he looked at you with pleading eyes, imploring you to understand.
You furrowed your brows. “Danger? What kind of danger?”
“The life-threatening kind,” he gulped. “I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you. You’re the best thing in my life.” His voice was so quiet, so raw, that for a second you considered backing down.
But he still smelled like her.
“So she gets to be in the club, and I don’t?” you whispered.
He was doing that thing that your mom had been doing since Will came back: leaving you out. Since his return, it was like Jonathan, Joyce, and Will were a team, and you were a spectator on the bleachers, trying out for the team every year but never making the cut. The thought made your chest hurt. You had truly thought Steve was different. That he’d never deliberately leave you out, but here you are, being left out once again.
“Baby, please,” he pleaded in a defeated voice. “This isn’t about her. This is about us, about me wanting to keep you safe.”
You sniffled. “Well, that’s not really your decision to make, Steve,” you whispered.
“Like hell it isn’t! I promised your mom-” he cut himself off, eyes wide.
“My mom? What does she have to do with this?” You furrowed your brows.
He shook his head. “Forget I said that,” he waved his hand dismissively.
“No, I will not just forget about it. Tell me, is my mom in on whatever this bullshit is?” you questioned.
Steve didn’t meet your eyes, looking down at his shoes as he meekly nodded.
You scoffed in disbelief, taking a step back. “Un-fucking-believable,” you shook your head. “Who else is in on it, huh? Are my brothers in it?”
Steve didn’t respond.
“Fucking tell me!” you yelled.
“...yes,” he whispered.
You couldn’t believe your ears. “So everyone’s just collectively decided I’m not what? Not good enough to join this little club you have going on?”
“It's just to keep you from getting hurt,” Steve responded from between gritted teeth.
“You’re hurting me right now, Steve!” you yelled, throwing your hands up in frustration. “You’ve been hurting me for weeks!”
Steve flinched when you yelled, pinching his nose. He looked away from you, unable to stand the angry tears that were rolling down your cheeks. He was well aware that he was hurting you, knew of your issues with being excluded, knew that this must be killing you right now, but all of that was still preferable to getting you mixed up in the monsters they were dealing with. Because you might hate him right now, might be angry at him and your family for deliberately keeping you out of the loop, but he would much rather that than be kneeling over your dead body because he couldn’t keep you safe.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered again.
You let the tears flow freely down your face. “I’m sorry, too,” you responded, taking a step back from him.
Steve’s head snapped to you, dread filling his features. “No,” he murmured. “Doll, don’t do this, please.”
“I’m sorry, Steve. I can’t be with you if I can’t trust you not to keep things from me.”
You saw the tears escape his eyes; let yours fall with his, but your decision was final.
Seven days, eight hours, twenty-five minutes, and forty-nine seconds.
That is exactly how long Y/N’s now living with them. So far, neither of them complained about her, and to her total surprise, she feels welcome and even at home. Silently, on her tiptoes, she opens the door to her bedroom and listens. The house is silent; everyone’s gone to sleep hours ago. It’s the first time she’s back in her human form since she came here. She was cautious not to do it. A few days ago, she dared to shift but didn’t leave her room. Instead, she stepped onto the balcony to look over the neighborhood. Today, though, she has an incredible craving for hot chocolate. With one last deep breath, she levees her room, tiptoeing down the hall, past the master bedroom. She’s almost past the studio as a faint light catches her eyes. She stops walking and looks inside like a deer caught in headlights. Steve’s sitting by his easel, staring at one of his paintings. Y/N can see that he’s not painting. He doesn’t even look like he’s considering his next move. It’s almost like he is looking through his canvas, lost in thoughts, or… he does look quite sad. For a moment, Y/N contemplates walking past the room and completing her mission, but the urge to help Steve out wins. With furrowed brows, she steps closer, stopping in the doorframe, and gently raps her knuckles against the wood. The blonde startles with a gasp, almost toppling from his stool. His head rocks to her, and for a second, she worries about him getting a whiplash. “Y-Y/N! I thought you were asleep.” Now Steve’s the one who looks caught. She smiles at the blonde and shakes her head. “May I come in?”
“Eh… yeah. Yeah, sure.” Steve scrambles a bit to put things away, though this room is relatively tidy, and he only has to put the brush away. Now that Steve’s standing, Y/N can better look at the canvas. From what she sees, it is a beautiful painting of Bucky. So far, Steve has only done the outlining with a pencil, but the perspective is good. She smiles at the blonde then. He blushes a bit and smiles, though it doesn’t reach his eyes. Now that Y/N really gets closer, she notices that he looks somewhat sad. “This looks beautiful already, Steve.” Again, the man gives her a small, sad smile. He still seems slightly far away with his thoughts.
A bit of silence fills the room. Y/N is still staring at Steve, and he tries not to meet her gaze. Then he clears his throat, rubbing his neck awkwardly before he speaks up. “You changed.”
“Yeah.” A faint blush now forms on her cheeks, hearing the skin. “I… I wasn’t sure how you would feel if I did, so… I thought you would all be asleep.”
“Sorry.” Y/N instantly notices the guilt and sadness washes over the blonde’s face, and before she knows it, her hand lands on his shoulder. “Steve…” The man looks up at her, maybe slightly startled at the touch. “I don’t know what’s wrong, but I want you to know that even if I’m primarily for Bucky, that doesn’t mean I’m not here for you, too, if you need me to. Whatever is up at the moment, know that you can always tell me.” All the man does is nod with a faint smile. She waits for a second for him to give him the chance to open up if he wants to, but the longer he’s silent, the more Y/N knows he’s not ready to talk just yet. “Hey, I was about to make some hot chocolate. What do you think? Are you going to join me? Watch some late-night trash tv?” She doesn’t expect Steve to agree or even to respond, so she’s shocked that he nods after a few seconds of staring at her. “I think… I think that’s a great idea.”
“Cool. I’ll wait downstairs.” She grins, squeezing his shoulder the tiniest bit before swiftly vanishing from the room, figuring that she gives him some time to store away his paints and get his thoughts straight.
Y/N lies on her bed when Bucky sleepily ascends the stairs. Steve’s softly snoring on the couch. Y/N had carefully covered him with a blanket after he fell asleep watching the third episode of some random show before shifting. The brunette instantly hears the soft snore, rubs his eyes, and walks over to the couch. Y/N’s head perks up to look at the scene, watching Bucky sigh sadly before he gently runs his fingers through blonde hair and takes the two mugs from the coffee table. His brows furrow a bit at the second mug and Y/N’s folded clothes next to it. His eyes quickly find her. “Hey, have you kept him company?” Y/N doesn’t dare to bark or make any loud sounds so all she does is let her tongue hang out in a sheepish grin and waggle her tail against the floor. Bucky must have understood though because he grins at her. “Good girl.” Y/N instantly preens at the praise and jumps up to follow after the brunette. She hasn’t treated herself or breakfast just yet, waiting for Bucky to do it.
She stretches into her whole length, feeling the muscles tightening in a delicious stretch. “Come on girl, bet you haven’t had any breakfast yet, right?” Y/N dares to make the smallest whine as she trots over to Bucky, who already put the mugs in the dishwasher and pulled out a fresh one to make some coffee for himself. While the machine gurgles, he fills her food bowl. Two minutes later Y/N snacks her food while Bucky sits at the island and drinks his coffee in comfortable silence. His hand now and then finds her fur and Y/N feels herself being disappointed that she’s not a cat. It feels so good she wants to purr. Since that’s not possible she opts to waggle her tail furiously in pleasure, abandoning her food in favor of licking at whatever skin she can reach from Bucky’s arm. “He had a bad night, you know. Happens more often lately.” Bucky’s voice is silent, sounding as if he’s talking to himself but when Y/N looks up she sees his eyes are already on her. “He thinks I don’t notice but I know he’s slowly drifting away. Sometimes he just sits somewhere, staring ahead. It’s like he’s losing time.” A heavy sigh leaves his lips as his gaze flickers back to the couch. “I don’t know how to help him. He won’t talk to me.” Y/N whines, louder this time and presses her head firmly into his hand. She doesn’t want him sad. It’s a look that doesn’t suit him or Steve. She’s graced with a small smile from the man. “I know, I know. I keep trying but… maybe you could too?” Y/N barks loudly, then startles herself as a loud thump comes from the couch. They both turn to see Steve’s legs and arms flail in a tired mess, entangled in his blanket. Shit, she forgot about him. Bucky just laughs, earning a glare from Steve but the blonde just heaves himself up from the floor to shuffle tiredly over to them. He flops over Bucky’s back, kissing his cheek quickly before closing his eyes again. “Don’t fall asleep on me, punk.” Steve mumbles something that Y/N doesn’t understand but he grabs after Bucky’s mug and takes a sip of black coffee. Y/N watches as the blonde flops next to bucky, head on the island and groaning. “Stevie…” Bucky’s voice is silent, sad even. “Tell me what’s wrong, please.”
“Nothing Buck, just… couldn’t sleep.” The blonde doesn’t even look up. Y/N sees Bucky’s frown, hears his heavy intake of a deep breath. “Okay…” He’s not believing him and Y/N’s pretty sure Steve knows that too. Shaking his head Bucky turns his attention back to Y/N- For a moment he just looks at her, seemingly contemplating on what to say until he finally speaks up. “Hey, Y/N… I, eh, I thought we could go out today?” Not only Y/N perks up at that. Steve lifts his head abruptly, staring wide eyed at his husband. “I though… well you dint bring many clothes and we don’t actually have furniture. I… Never mind.” Instantly Y/N shuffles back up to him, head landing on his lap, together with one of her paws. Steve’s just as face, placing a hand on Bucky’s shoulder squeezing lightly. “I think it’s a great idea, Buck.” Steve smiles but then frowns again. “We don’t have much money this month, but maybe we could by an actual dresser and some clothes.” Bucky nods, a faint blush on his cheeks. Y/N doesn’t mind, she thinks he looks cute like this and the idea is great. She’d like some stuff to liven up her room.
Nervously she fiddles with the hem of her shirt, walking up and down by her bed. She has to go out. As human. With bucky and Steve. It’s not the fact he’s going outside that makes her nervous but the fact that both men insisted on her being shifted. She feels confused by that. Of course, that all she ever wanted, being able to walk around like she’s a normal person but on the other hand… she was trained to be a therapy animal, trained to help as best as she could but never in human form. And this is big! It’s Bucky wanting to go out to a possible big crowd of people. Shopping malls and furniture stores aren’t the emptiest stores around. If they time it bad there will be hundreds of people around and that alone could throw bucky off. She might not be of help then. They might don’t want her after. A knock on the door startled her out of her own doubts. She takes a deep breath before she walks to the door to open it. She’s greeted with a big smile from Steve. “Hey.” She smiles politely at him, her own nerves still spiraling. “I-” He looks down the hall before slowly pushing into her room, closing the door behind himself. His face is sent into a mask of seriousness and Y/N almost thinks that’s it. He’s going to throw her out now. But instead, Steve surprises her. “I wanted to thank you.” At first, Y/N is reduced to a staring mass but then she slowly starts to notices Steve’s own nervousness. The faint blush on his cheekbones, the twitching of his fingers, the eyes that just won’t meet hers. “Anytime, Steve.” She takes his hands in hers and squeezes gently, smiling as his eyes snap to hers. A goofy grin plays on his lips as if a heavy weight has been lifted from him. It pains Y/N that’s she’s about o destroy that. “Steve, Bucky talked to me.” Steve sobers up immediately, worry now set in hie features. “He knows something is up with you and he knows you think he hasn’t noticed. He's worried because you want talk to him.” She holds on tightly to him as he starts to protest. “I’m not about to guilt trip you or anything. I just- If there’s something you can’t talk with him about, something you don’t know how to address, just know that I’m here. I’m willing to listen, give tips if you like. You just have to say a word, alright?” She gazes into his eyes, hoping for him to see the sincerity she’s working with. He does nod but his words are one of denial. “That’s nice of you but like I told bucky, I’m fine. It’s really not necessary to worry.”
“Okay. But if you ever need someone to talk, you know where I am.” He nods again and leaves without any words as Bucky shouts from downstairs. Did she screw everything up now? For a moment she stares at the spot Steve stood just seconds ago until Bucky’s voice chimes up a second time. “Y/N? Are you ready?”
“Coming!” It might be a long day.
They first head to the furniture store. Y/N hasn’t thought much about what she wants to get so she knows she has to drag the men around the whole store. Probably. The first few minutes they just walk past beds and couches Y/N doesn’t pay much attention to. What she does pay attention to is Bucky’s demeanor. Where he was all excited earlier, he’s now pretty quiet. She can see his eyes flicker through the halls and to passing people. She’s glad that it’s fairly empty today but for Bucky, there are probably still way too many people around. Steve has Bucky’s hand in his all the time, squeezing now and then to ensure him he’s alright. It just gets worse as they finally enter the room for closets and chests of drawer. There are much more people around and Y/N notices that bucky tenses beside her, his gaze turning frantic. She’s not much for feeling his emotions as a human but one glance at him tells her that he’s panicking inside and the event from a week ago is ready to repeat itself. Steve doesn’t seem to notice. He’s off to a sideboard that has piqued his interest for whatever reason so Y/N takes matters into her hand. She grabs Bucky’s cold hand and wraps her fingers softly around them. “You’re alright. They won’t do anything. Come on, let’s go somewhere less crowded.” Buck doesn’t react though he follows her willingly as she quickly walks past people to one corner where fewer people are around. She presses Bucky next to a very big closet and lets him slide down the wall to a sitting position where he hides behind his knees. Y/N sit right in front of him, hands on his arms, slowly stroking her thumb over exposed skin or squeezing lightly when people walk past them. She keeps an eye out for Steve so he won’t walk past them. Bucky’s breathing goes a bit faster as a group of louder people passes them and Y/N is quick to slide in beside him to wrap him in her arms, hoping that the doesn’t mind. Bucky goes rather willingly, clinging to her and hiding in her embrace. She’s pretty sure he doesn’t even know what he’s doing, or rather with whom. “You’re okay, Bucky. No one here will hurt or touch you. It’s just me and Steve who get to be close to you, okay? You’re alright. I promise.”
It takes Steve another twenty minutes to find them. He looks just as stressed as Bucky must feel, but his relief is imminent when he spots them. Though a strange look crosses his features. Bucky’s a crying mess by now and Y/N tries her best to keep him calm and comforted. It would work much better for her if she could have shifted but she can’t possibly do it here. “Y/N, Bucky!” Steve’s by their side in a few strides and crouches down, his hand running soothingly over Bucky’s back. The brunette man whimpers but Y/N’s quick to whisper to him. “It’s alright Bucky. It’s just Steve.”
“’evie?”
“Yeah, Steve.” Just like that the brunette flings himself into Steve’s embrace. Y/N’s left on the floor watching the blonde comfort his husband and somehow it makes her feel like a failure. Sure, she managed to keep him from panicking and that’s what she’s supposed to do but it stings that just a touch from Steve makes Bucky almost relax. She watches for a moment longer before she stands up, brushes the dust from her jeans, and picks up her bag. Her hand softly lands on Steve’s shoulder, carefully watching the passing people that start staring. “Steve, let’s go home.” The blonde looks up briefly and nods, gathering Bucky tighter in his arms he lifts him onto his feet while Y/N figures out the fastest exit.
Ten minutes later they sit in the car, Bucky slumped against the window on the passenger side on his way to sleep. Steve’s staring ahead at the street in deep concentration and all Y/N can do is look at her lap and feel bad.

Summary: the lockdown in Hawkins and fighting Vecna every day is severely stopping you and Steve from having any quality time together, so youll take any chance you get.
cw: smut, oral, piv, van sex, outside sex, pet names
wc: 2k
the lockdown in hawkins was getting to everyone. there was only so much time you could spend around one another before beginnig to lose your shit.
however for you and steve, you werent getting enough time together.
crawls took over your whole schedule, failed attempt after failed attempt at finding vecna, mapping out the upside down and just plain wasting time down at that horrendous radio station.
to make it worse, the group always split you and steve up during crawls, sending him off in the van to track hopper with dustin as you stayed back with the others at the station.
you stayed attached to eachother's side during planing, well until you were told to seperate as neither of you were paying attention.
but it wasnt your fault that the two of you got no private time together anymore, so god forbid steve was a little distracted by your ass every time you bent over.
the last time you guys had sex was about three weeks ago. practically overnight the millitary decided to crack down and double the amount of burns they were doing, almost at one a week now.
every day was spent preparing for the next, and when the crawl day came, the morning was taken over with last minute preparing and the night was spent carrying out crawl protocol.
they often wouldnt end until the early hours of the morning, so by the time you were done and finally reunited with steve at home, you were both so tired you couldn’t get past a half assed make out before passing out in bed, still dressed.
the last three days had been spent frantically preparing for the next crawl, tonight.
it was midday, you’d been up since 5, taking an early shift at the cafe you worked at before heading to the dreaded squawk station to begin your part in helping for this evening.
the time luckily passed quickly as you got absorbed with your task at hand, helped by steve being to busy to distract you.
you only knew it was 4pm when all the kids arrived, fresh from school. dropping all their stuff down on the sofas in the lounge and heading out the back to forage though the emergency food youd spent half the afternoon restocking.
by sunset, everyone was doing their last minute checks, going over the plan once more. that was when, running over everyone's shit to rejoin the conversation, dustin tripped on a bag strap in the middle of the floor and fell down with a loud scream.
everyone froze, turning around to the noise to see the poor kid on the floor, clutching his ankle, tears in his eyes.
steve was first on the scene, along with the mother of the group, joyce. they decided after a minute of trying to get dustin to stand that time was running out and dustin would have to just stay at the station where he could sit and ice his foot.
"Well, someones gonna have to go in the van to do hendersons job" hopper grunted.
all the kids started speaking between them, trying to way up who's most likely to know how the tracker works.
"I'll go!" you shouted eaerly, a lot more eagerly than you meant to.
everyone shut up, staring at you in shock. steve looked to you in confusion at your sudden want to volunteer to find you already staring at him.
at the look in your eyes, steve instantly understands, unfortunatly so do the others. their eyes flick between the two of you before recognising the look you had and groaning in disgust.
"no." hopper says.
"What?" you and steve say in unison.
"no because you guys-" hes cut off by joyce's arm pulling him back and whipsering in his ear as the others start to quietly agree with where he was going.
"fine. but go now and stay on task."
you practically jump with joy as steve grabs your hand, tugging you out the building and to the car.
"We're watching you!" someone shouts from the door but you dont hear.
finaly you guys are alone, and awake. yes you had a job to do, a very important one but if you got it done properly and quickly, you’d have a little bit of time to yourselves at the end.
steve shows you the tracker, pretty much just doing it himself before jumping in the front to let everyone know they’re good to go.
he begins the van in the direction of the tunnels that hopper is navigating checking back on you to make sure the tracker is still following.
it feels almost impossible to concentrate, but you are. knowing the quicker you get this done, the quicker you can get steve in the back with you and jump his bones.
once you get to the end of the tunnel you wait, and wait, and wait even longer, so long your attention begins to stray.
"It'll be a minute, just watch the frequency" steve advised you.
"you know, i really like that jacket stevie" you started up.
"baby.." his voice dropped low as he spoke. "pay attention"
"think it would look better on the floor back here though"
"stop it princess" he warned.
his tone was much softer than his words, almost apologising for not being able to play into your words. a few more minutes pass by in silence, you watching the tracker intently, mainly to stop your mind wandering from undressing steve.
"are we still on the same frequency?
"yeah.. feels like we've been here forever-"
just as your about to suggest reaching out to someone at the station, steves radio crackles and mikes voice echoes through.
"Crawls off"
"wait what?"
you jump at the words, 1000 thoughts running though your mind.
"Millitary have gone, abandoned the burn, something about a storm."
"oh shit"
"yeah so.. just head back to the squawk, we'll regroup and plan our next move there" mikes voice cut off as steve put the radio down and turned back to you.
steve had driven off into a small secluded section of woods on the side of the road, switching the engine off and launching himself into the back where you were.
neither of you hesitated for a second to begin undressing, not even bothering to remove your clothes fully. your shorts were dangling around your ankle, tits just pulled out of the cups of your bra and panties pushed to the side.
steves jeans were unzipped, belt long gone, and his jacket and shirt had made it to the floor of the van. you laid on your back, steves jacket behind your head as he buried his face into your cunt.
"Fuuuck steve, more please- need more"
the sounds of your cries and the wetness between your legs filled the van as he listened to your pleas and plunged two fingers into you.
your back arched and thighs trembled as steve brought you agonisingly close to climax, the desperation and not having him in so long making you too sensitive.
"Steve- gonna- aaah- cumming"
he hummed into your pussy as you came hard around his fingers and over his tongue while your body shook around him.
his mouth sucked on your clit softly as he rode out the aftershocks and eased out his fingers, rubbing circles into your soft thighs to bring you back down with his other hand.
"taste so fucking good- missed that" steve groaned as he cleaned off his own two fingers.
once you caught your breath, you kicked off your shorts and underwear and pounced on steve, pushing him down onto his back.
crawling over him, you pulled his jeans and boxers down all the way, grabbing his swollen, leaking cock in your hands.
he threw his head back at the feeling of your hand around him, bucking his hips up uncontrollably at each touch of the head.
you lent over, liking up his length before suckling on the head, letting your saliva drip down and coat him shiny.
"Fuck- princess gotta stop that"
you moaned around him and his hands flew to your hair to pull you off.
"need to be inside you"
"please baby" you whine as he lets go of your hair, sitting himself up.
throwing your legs over his hips, you brace one hand on steves shoulder, the other hand taking his cock to glide through your dripping folds.
you both sigh at the joint friction, already getting close at just one simple touch.
"Princess, just- aah"
you cut him off by sinking down onto his cock in one slick movement, your walls stretching around him, having not had him inside you for so long.
"so tight for me- christ"
panting already, you stay seated on steves cock, adjusting to the massiveness of him.
neither of you can talk, you roll your hips in a slow cirlce feeling steve press deep into your stomach. the pressure sends electricity through your whole body as steve groans and sighs below you.
"move please- please darlin- need to feel ya" steve begs.
you do as he asks, lifting your hips up and dropping back down. you set a quick, deep pace straight away, hands on steves shoulders as his are planted on your ass, helping your movements.
pleasure bubbled in your stomach, you were already on the edge, sweat slicked your skin, the van shook violently, items fell off the shelf behind you and the front window began to fog up.
"steve i- cant-" your hips were giving up on you as you continued to bounce up and down on steve, each down made a sticky, skin slapping noise from your thighs on his.
"you're okay- just like that- ya doing so good princess"
his hips began to meet yours, forcing his cock deep into you. steve looked down to where you connected and moaned loud at the sight of a faint bulge in your lower stomach aappearing at each thrust of his hips
"Fuuuck baby look at that" steve growled with a slap to your ass cheek
"aah- 'so deep- uugh"
"dont stop- 'm so close"
"yeahyeahyeah" your words were failing, your climax was in sight, you could feel your stomach contracting and with a choked moan you came undone on steve.
"jesus- gonna cum- baby you need to get-"
"no" you slam your hips down again pushing at steves shoulders as he makes a feeble attempt to sit up whilst you continue you ride out your leg shaking orgasm.
you lean down, nipping at steves ear as you whisper to him.
"want you to cum inside me- need to feel it"
brows furrowed, muscles tense as he tries to hold out, steve hips stutter at your words as his head falls onto your shoulder.
"go on stevie- fill me up, please"
he bites down on your shoulder as his hips buck once more, spilling hot ropes of his spent inside you.
the sensation of his cum painting your walls pushes you dangerously closer to another wave of high as your hand comes down to rub over your clit.
with a scream you cum again, walls pulsating and squeezing around steves cock, milking him dry and leaving hi shivering, over-sensitive
he lifts his head, hair sticking to his damp forehead as he grabs your face with one hand and kisses you.
your lips lock together as your tongues side over each other in a dirty yet passionate kiss that shows you truly how much you've missed this.
when you pull back, you dont go far, leaving your forehead pressed against his the same way your chests are.
"i love you stevie"
"i love you too baby- missed you so fucking much"
"i know, i feel like i've been losing my mind"
he kisses all over your face mumbling promises of giving more time to you.
"its not your fault we have no time"
"well i'll find time, cuz i cant go that long without you again"
"speaking of.." you groan.
"no don't"
"we should go back, they're going to think something is wrong"
"we should yeah"
your lips find each other again, the heat still lingering in it. you feel steve's cock twitch against your stomach and smile into the kiss.
"maybe they wont notice if we're just a bit longer" you mumbled against his lips.
"say no more" steve groans as he flips you both over, ready to feel you all again.

Steve Harrington had seen plenty of pretty girls before.
He'd dated them.
Embarrassed himself in front of them.
Been dumped by them.
So he considered himself somewhat immune.
Then you walked into Scoops Ahoy on your first day.
And he forgot his own name.
Robin noticed immediately.
"Oh, this is bad."
Steve blinked.
"What?"
"You've got the look."
"...What look?"
"The one where your brain completely shuts off."
"My brain is functioning perfectly."
Robin watched you laugh with the manager while adjusting the ridiculous sailor hat.
Steve smiled without realizing.
Robin groaned.
"Oh my God."
"What?"
"You smiled."
"So?"
"The idiot smile."
"I do not have an idiot smile."
"You absolutely have an idiot smile."
It only got worse.
Every morning Steve suddenly volunteered to clean your side of the counter.
He offered to restock cones before you could.
He somehow burned through three boxes of napkins just because he kept pretending to wipe the counter while stealing glances at you.
Robin nearly lost her mind.
"You know staring isn't flirting, right?"
"I wasn't staring."
"You've looked over there nineteen times."
"...You've been counting?"
"I have nothing better to do."
You were easy to like.
Kind.
Patient.
The first customer to yell at Steve over the flavors left him frustrated enough to kick the freezer door.
You simply handed him a sample spoon.
"Emergency ice cream."
"What?"
"You look sad."
"...I do?"
"You've got puppy eyes."
"I have puppy eyes?"
Robin snorted so loudly she had to leave the room.
Steve carried that tiny plastic spoon in his pocket for almost two weeks.
Robin found it while borrowing his jacket.
"...Steve."
"What?"
"You kept it?"
He looked genuinely confused.
"...Yeah?"
"You are down horrendous."
Everything changed when Dustin burst into Scoops one afternoon with another one of his insane theories.
Hidden elevators.
Secret messages.
Russians.
Steve should've known following Dustin Henderson never ended well.
Somehow it became all of you.
Sneaking through hidden hallways beneath Starcourt.
Running from armed guards.
Robin.
Erica.
Dustin.
You.
Steve.
By the time they caught you, Steve's face already hurt from getting punched.
Your wrists burned against the ropes tying them to the chair.
Then came the needle.
Cold metal.
A sharp sting in his arm.
You flinched as another guard injected you moments later.
Steve strained against the ropes.
"Hey!"
The guard ignored him.
Steve's stomach twisted.
"You leave her alone!"
The only answer was laughter.
The drug hit fast.
The room tilted.
Words stopped making sense.
Colors blurred together.
Everything felt...far away.
The next thing Steve remembered was Robin dragging him through a hallway while he laughed at absolutely nothing.
You stumbled beside them, equally out of it.
"I think..." you slurred.
"...the floor is moving."
"No..."
Steve grinned lazily.
"We're moving."
Robin sighed.
"I hate all of you."
The bathroom became temporary shelter.
Robin disappeared into one stall.
You leaned heavily against the sink.
Steve sat on the cold tile floor.
Everything felt slow.
His thoughts floated around like bubbles.
Then he looked up.
You were already looking at him.
Smiling.
Not because he said something funny.
Just...
Smiling.
His chest tightened.
"...There you are."
You tilted your head.
"...Me?"
"I've..."
He laughed weakly.
"I've been trying to tell you something."
Robin poked her head out of the stall.
"Oh no."
Steve ignored her completely.
"I thought..."
His voice softened.
"...I thought maybe it'd go away."
"What would?"
"The feeling."
The room blurred around the edges.
"I see you every morning."
He smiled sleepily.
"And then..."
He pointed toward his chest.
"...Everything happens."
You stared.
"My heart does this stupid thing."
He laughed at himself.
"I can't think."
"I can't remember orders."
"I dropped three ice cream scoops yesterday."
Robin called from behind the stall,
"It was six."
"Six."
Steve nodded solemnly.
"Six scoops."
He looked back at you.
"You smile..."
His eyes glistened.
"...and it's like somebody stole all the air."
The bathroom fell quiet.
"You..." he whispered.
"...take my breath away."
You blinked rapidly.
"Steve..."
"I know."
He rubbed at his eyes.
"I know this is stupid."
"You don't have to say anything."
"I just..."
He smiled sadly.
"I needed you to know."
"...Even if tomorrow you pretend I never said it."
For a long second, you didn't move.
Then you carefully crossed the room and sat beside him on the floor.
Your shoulder rested against his.
"You know..."
You murmured.
"...I only took this job because I needed something to do for the summer."
Steve listened quietly.
"I didn't expect to meet anyone."
You looked over.
"I definitely didn't expect the pretty sailor boy to keep finding excuses to refill my napkin holder."
Robin barked out a laugh.
"I KNEW YOU NOTICED."
Steve buried his face in his hands.
"...Please let the Russians come back."
You gently took one of his hands.
"I noticed everything."
His head lifted.
"The way you'd make me milkshakes even when I didn't ask."
"The way you always walked on the outside of the sidewalk."
"The way you looked at me..."
You smiled softly.
"...like I was something worth looking at."
Steve felt tears sting his eyes.
"You never had to be scared to tell me."
"I wasn't scared."
Robin coughed loudly.
"You were terrified."
"...I was terrified."
You laughed, squeezing his hand.
"I think..."
You leaned your forehead against his.
"...you've been taking my breath away too."
The moment didn't last.
Somewhere outside the bathroom came shouting.
Then explosions.
Then Dustin yelling Steve's name.
Reality crashed back all at once.
There were still Russians to escape.
Still a mall to save.
Still monsters waiting outside.
But as Steve stood, still dizzy and bruised, your fingers slipped naturally into his.
He smiled despite everything.
Maybe the truth serum hadn't forced him to say anything that wasn't already there.
Maybe it had simply removed every wall he'd built around it.
And standing beside you, hand in hand as chaos unfolded around Starcourt Mall, Steve realized one thing with perfect clarity.
