Everyone insists they're "happy" for Yuu... but no one is taking it well.

Ace keeps making jokes because if he stops joking, he'll probably cry.

Deuce promises they'll meet again somehow, even if he has to become "the first honor student to invent dimension travel."

Cater scrolls through his camera roll and realize Yuu's in none of them. They had always been the one taking pictures.

Trey packs snacks for them, saying they'll probably miss Night Raven College food.

Riddle prepares a proper farewell tea party according to every rule in the Queen's regulations... but halfway through he pauses because he realizes this is goodbye.

Before Yuu leaves, Riddle thanks them sincerely.

"You changed more than just this dorm."

Ace ends up crying anyway btw.

Savanaclaw 💪

They all pretend it isn't a big deal.

It absolutely is.

Jack walks Yuu to the mirror in silence.

He eventually says:

"Come back if you can."

Ruggie grumbles about losing someone who always shared food, even tho its more than that.

He secretly slips lucky charms into Yuu's bag.

Leona acts like he's asleep during the farewell. He just wouldn't be able to let them go, wouldn't be able to say goodbye.

After Yuu leaves...

Leona asks,

"...They gone?"

When someone nods...

"...Tch."

He sleeps the rest of the day, and the days following.

No one mentions his ears were down.

Azul immediately begins researching ways to reopen dimensional travel, totally for business reasons. I mean, if Yuu's world were to be accessible, he'd get more customers....That's all he cares about...Totally.

Floyd dramatically clings to Yuu.

"Shriiimppppy! You can't leave!"

Jade smiles politely.

His eyes absolutely are not smiling.

Azul actually tears up while trying very hard not to.

He gives Yuu one final contract.

The contract simply says:

"Should our worlds ever reconnect, you are guaranteed lifelong hospitality at the Mostro Lounge."

Not a single shady outcome, just friendship.

Scarabia ☀️

Kalim throws a goodbye celebration that somehow includes half the school.

Nobody has fun.

Everyone is crying.

Kalim hugs Yuu about fifty times.

Jamil helps pack everything neatly.

When no one's looking...

Jamil quietly says,

"Take care of yourself."

It's probably the softest thing anyone's ever heard him say.

Kalim cries so much Yuu almost misses the portal because they're comforting him.

Vil insists Yuu leave looking perfect.

New outfit.

Hair fixed.

No arguments.

Stuff everyone could've offered them long ago, but they've all abused of their kindness instead without returning the ounce of kindness.

"Your first impression back home matters."

Rook somehow turns the farewell into poetry.

He's crying while complimenting the beauty of fleeting encounters.

Epel keeps trying not to cry.

Fails immediately, he cries out ugly, Vil can't even scold him.

After Yuu disappears..

Vil waits until everyone leaves before allowing himself one quiet moment to grieve.

Ignihyde 💀

Idia prepared for this, emotionally AND mentally. He's watched animes !

He still blue screens.

Ortho gives Yuu a tiny device.

"It won't work in another universe... but maybe it'll remind you of us."

Idia refuses to attend the farewell.

When Yuu reaches the mirror...

A message suddenly appears on their phone.

"GG, Prefect. Thanks for clearing this impossible game.

Hope your next world has better tutorials."

Diasomnia 🐉

Nobody takes it well, especially not Malleus.

Sebek loudly declares Yuu deserves a royal sendoff.

Silver quietly gives Yuu a flower some animals brought him.

Lilia smiles the whole time.

Which somehow makes it hurt even more.

Malleus asks:

"...Must you go?"

Yuu explains they have family waiting, a home.

A place they haven't seen in so long.

Malleus understands.

He just doesn't like it.

Before Yuu steps through...

He gently takes their hand.

"You gave me a place in your story.

...Thank you."

It's the first time everyone hears genuine loneliness in the future king's voice.

Ramshackle 👻

Grim refuses to believe it's happening.

"We'll just find another way! Henchhuman isn't leaving!"

Until the portal in the mirror actually opens.

Then reality hits.

He tackles Yuu into the biggest hug imaginable.

"You're my henchhuman!"

"Who's gonna yell at me now?!"

"Who's gonna buy me tuna?!"

Yuu promises they'll never forget him as Grim sobs.

The professors have to gently pull him away.

As Yuu disappears into the light...

The rumor spread through Night Raven College in less than a day. Not because you, Ace, or Deuce announced it. No, Ace had simply shown up to lunch with an arm around your shoulders closer than usual while Deuce handed you your favorite food and drink without even being asked. The fact that neither of them looked embarrassed about it told everyone everything they needed to know.

Riddle found out from Cater.

"You're kidding."

"I'm not," Cater said, trying very hard not to laugh. "Ace, Deuce, and the Prefect are dating."

Riddle stared at him. Then he stared at Ace, Deuce and the Prefect across the cafeteria.

"They managed what?"

"First years' got games I'll give them that." Cater shrugged.

Leona's reaction wasn't much better. Ruggie brought it up while Leona was trying to nap.

"So the Prefect's dating Trappola and Spade."

Leona cracked one eye open. "Together?"

"Yep."

Leona was quiet for a moment. "...Didn't know either of them had enough courage for that."

Ruggie laughed so hard he nearly fell off the couch.

Azul learned about it from Floyd, which was unfortunate for everyone involved.

"Shrimpy's got two boyfriends now~"

Azul immediately looked up from his paperwork. "...Excuse me?"

"Little Mackerel and Crabby."

Azul slowly removed his glasses.

"How did Ace Trappola accomplish this?"

"Love potion I bet ~"

"That was not a serious question, Floyd."

Kalim, meanwhile, thought it was wonderful.

"They're finally dating?!"

Jamil blinked. "Finally?"

"Everyone could tell they liked each other."

"Apparently not everyone."

Kalim smiled brightly. "I think it's cute."

Jamil sighed. "You're probably the only Housewarden saying that."

Vil looked personally offended by the news.

"No."

A certain first-year who had made the mistake of telling him shifted nervously. "No...?"

"No." Vil folded his arms.

"Those two cannot coordinate an outfit. How have they coordinated a relationship?"

Epel wisely chose not to answer.

Idia found out through Magicam. At first he assumed the rumor was fake. Then somebody uploaded a photo of Ace holding your hand while Deuce looked ready to punch anyone who got too close.

"...No way." Idia stared at the image.

Then he spent the next four hours reading every post about the relationship.

Malleus's reaction was by far the calmest.

"The Child of Man is dating two first-years?" he repeated after Sebek informed him.

"YES, YOUNG MASTER."

"I see."

"...And?" Sebek waited, expecting more of his opinion.

"Well they seem happy..." Malleus looked confused.

The funniest part was that none of the three knew any of this was happening.

"Why is everyone staring at us?" Deuce asked as the three of you crossed campus.

"Got a little idea..." Ace glanced at the crowd of students immediately looking away.

Deuce groaned while Yuu laughed. Ace only grinned, slipping his hand into yours and throwing his free arm around Deuce's shoulders.

Across the courtyard, several students immediately started whispering again.

"See?" Ace said smugly. "We're famous."

"We're being judged."

"Same thing."

Yuu knew something was wrong when Grim stopped complaining; no demands for tuna, no dramatic declarations that he was the greatest mage in all of Sage's Island, no arguments about whose turn it was to clean Ramshackle...

He just layed on the floor infront of the fireplace he usually lights with his blue flames to keep his furr warm. Curse Crowley for leaving the two in the cold in the middle of winter.

"Grim?"

The only sound came from the blue fire, he didn't even look back.

"...What?"

"You've been weird all day." Yuu frowned.

"I'm not weird."

"You haven't caused any problem in 2 hours about now."

"Look at me." Yuu scooted closer waiting for the reply they knew they weren't going to get as grim's ears twitched and he reluctantly turned around.

And Yuu's stomach dropped, the little creature's eyes were tired... Not full of life like they usually are.

"Grim—"

"I'm fine!"

Yuu knelt in front of him.

"Are you being bothered..."

"No, I'm not."

"Grim."

"I'm NOT!"

He wasn't angry, he was sad. Only Yuu knew that best, something they're not proud of. And Yuu was scared.

"What's wrong?"

"...You're gonna leave." Grim looked away, answering after a long moment.

"What?"

"You're gonna leave, y'know..when you'll find a way home."

Yuu froze, not expecting this topic, why would he think about that now?

"You always talk about it, don't you?"

"Grim..."

"You miss your world." his claws dug into the windowsill. "You miss your family."

Your real family is what he meant, he's aware his kind does not exist in your world. And you'll never be able to drag him with you. He already physically hurt you once after all. Yuu couldn't speak, because Grim wasn't wrong.

There had been nights, so many nights when Yuu stared at the mirror chamber and wished for home and to put an end to all of this madness, and Grim was very much aware.

"But I want you to go, you miss your home." tears slipped down Grim's face. "So I want you to find it..."

"But...What am I supposed to do after? Everybody else has somewhere."

"But Ramshackle is just..."

Yuu and him, the words didn't left his mouth, Yuu understood anyway and a terrible ache spread through their chest.

Because Grim wasn't just a friend anymore. Somewhere between surviving overblots and midnight snacks and falling asleep during study sessions and arguing over literally everything...They had become family, the only family Yuu had in this world. The only family Grim ever had.

"You'll forget me, you won't remember the monster that lived in this broken dorm with you."

Yuu grabbed him immediately without thinking, pulling him into their chest. Grim let out a startled noise.

"Yuu—"

"Absolutely not."

The word came out stern, almost angry, they're trying to convince him and themselves. Grim went still and Yuu held him tighter.

"I could never forget you."

"But—"

"I couldn't."

Because suddenly Yuu realized something awful, Grim has never had any family, never had a place as he recalls...He's technically in the same situation as Yuu, except nothing can be done for him.

"You idiot." a laugh escaped Yuu. "You absolute idiot."

"Hey!"

"Do you know how miserable you've made my life?"

"RUDE!"

"You set things on fire."

"Sometimes!"

"You eat everything."

"I DO NOT EAT EVERYTHING!"

"You tried to bite Ace."

"He deserved it."

Yuu laughed, then immediately started crying. Yuu's only ever weak when it comes to Grim, the entire school noticed that, it wasn't new.

"...Yuu?"

"I don't know what's going to happen, I don't know if I'll ever get home."

Grim kept quiet as Yuu buried their face against his fur.

"But if I leave...I'll take every memory of you with me." Grim's eyes widened.

"And if you stay...?"

"Then you're stuck with me forever."

"...Promise ?"

Yuu's smile disappeared, because they knew exactly what he meant, he wanted them to promise not to forget.

"I promise." Yuu pressed their forehead against his.

Grim nodded before finally letting himself cry and Yuu cried with him. And neither of them said what they were both thinking.

After Yuu returns home, the boys start replaying old conversations differently.

Every slight mentions about wanting to go home.

Ace realizes Yuu stopped talking about their world near the end.

At the time he thought it meant they’d gotten attached to NRC.

Later he understands that the truth was Yuu was trying to make leaving hurt less.

Deuce remembers all the times he found Yuu awake late at night in Ramshackle.

He always told them: “You should sleep.”

He never asked: “What’s wrong?”

The boys eventually realize Yuu had been preparing everyone emotionally for their disappearance long before it actually happened.

Becoming quieter, no more making comments because they knew they wouldn't fit in no matter what. *****

Like they were already halfway gone.

Ace keeps thinking about the last night at Ramshackle.

Yuu looked fine for a magicless person being taken to a complete different world.

But now he wonders if that came from the relief of finally being able to go home… or from spending one last night with people they loved.

Deuce’s regret comes from all the things he didn’t say.

He thought there would still be letters somehow.

A foolish hope indeed.

He didn’t realize goodbye meant gone.

Grim is much more upset

Yuu spent so much time comforting everyone else about the separation…

and almost nobody stopped to comfort Yuu.

The cruelest realization is that Yuu probably left believing they hid their sadness successfully.

Meanwhile the boys are left wishing they had noticed sooner.

Yuu occasionally forgets details about their old world. First it’s small things like favorite snack brands, a classmate’s face, the route home from school. Then one day they realize they can’t remember their own bedroom clearly anymore.

Nobody at NRC fully understands how lonely being magicless is. The first years mentions it rarely but in a casual way, like 'oh yeah we forgot', but Yuu constantly lives with the awareness that if something goes wrong, they can’t protect themselves the same way everyone else can. They're thankful to have friends that protected them during the overblots even tho they felt utterly useless...

Ramshackle is cold because the dorm was abandoned for so long, and sometimes Yuu stays awake listening to the building creak, realizing there’s nobody in this world they truly belong with.

Grim notices when Yuu is homesick before anyone else does. He’ll start fights or act extra annoying on purpose just to distract them from crying.

Yuu keeps souvenirs from every dorm. Not because they’re sentimental, but because they’re terrified that if they ever go home, this world will disappear like a dream.

Some nights Yuu quietly wonders whether their family thinks they disappeared… or died. (I think I saw something about Yuu's original world being paused or something like that in one of the novels but im not too sure so...)

Ace is one of the first people to realize Yuu smiles differently around others versus when they’re alone.

Yuu gets used to being needed only during crises. They become “the reliable prefect,” but secretly start feeling like people only come to Ramshackle when everything is falling apart.

Malleus visiting Ramshackle late at night becomes important because he’s one of the few people who understands isolation. Neither of them says it directly.

After every overblot incident, Yuu becomes more afraid. Not of the overblots themselves, but of losing the people they’ve grown attached to.

There’s a version of Yuu that stops talking about going home because they realize NRC is home now… and that realization scares them more than anything.

Crowley promising “we’ll find a way home soon” starts hurting after a while because Yuu can tell he doesn’t (want to) know.

Yuu sometimes sits in on magic studies they can never use anyway. Not because they expect to learn magic, just because they want to feel included.

The students eventually stop calling Ramshackle “haunted” and start calling it “home,” and Yuu nearly cries the first time they overhear it.

If Yuu ever made it back to their original world, the loneliness would hit in subtle moments. Reaching for their phone to text Ace about something dumb. Hearing thunder and thinking of Diasomnia. Turning around to tell Grim a joke before remembering he isn’t there. And the worst part would be knowing nobody around them could truly understand why they miss a world that technically never existed.
