Describe how you save the world with a rock. No magic, it isnāt a boulder, just a regular-ass rock.
Bludgeoning.
FUCK YOU DISNEY
Anyways, yāall better start saving your fave fanfics and fanart under the Disney labels cause it looks like theyāre trying to curb fair use/fanworks and Iām sure thereās going to be mass panicked deletions even though itās probably unnecessary cause AO3ā²s legal team will fight for us.
You know that 400K yall were so fucking mad about OTW raising? Yeah, its gonna pay for the travel expenses and court costs that the legal team at AO3/OTW when they protect your shit from getting C&Ded. DO NOT DELETE YOUR STUFF! IF YOU GET CONTACTED BY DISNEY - GO TO THE ORGANIZATION OF TRANSFORMATIVE WORKS , CONTACT THEIR LEGAL ADVOCACY DEPARTMENT! ASK FOR HELP!! THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE IS *WHY* *THEY* *EXIST*
Note that Disney would have one Hell of a time serving C&Ds to authors at AO3 - because there is noĀ ācontact authorā option other than leaving a comment.
Theyād have to contact the SITE, which is to say, the Organization for Transformative Works, to deliver a C&D order or a DMCA takedown order.
And the OTW is not going to remove fics because someone sent a letter that saysĀ āactually those characters belong to me and you canāt use them that way.ā The OTW was created to FIGHT that kind of claim. They are ready.Ā
Donāt delete your fics out of fear. WE OWN THE SERVERS. They canāt threaten the hosts into deleting anything.
And if Disney thought they had a strong legal case against fanfic, theyādāve shut down the archive a decade ago, when it was penniless and unknown, instead of waiting until it had won several battles in Congress and got worldwide acclaim for a Hugo Award.
This is important!
āI always remember having this fight with a random dude who claimed that āstraight white menā were the only true innovators. His prime example for this was the computer⦠the computer⦠THE COMPUTER!!! THE COM-PU-TER!!!
Alan Turing - Gay man and āfather of computingā Wren operating Bombe - The code cracking computers of the 2nd world war were entirely run by women Katherine Johnson - African American NASA mathematician and āHuman computerā Ada Lovelace - arguably the 1st computer programmerā
- Sacha Coward
Also Margaret Hamilton - NASA computer scientist who put the first man on the moon - an as-yet-unmatched feet of software engineering, here pictured beside the full source of that computer programme. #myhero
Grace Hopper - the woman that coined the term ābugā Ā
- @robinlayfield
Grace Hopper did more than coin the term ābugā. She invented the first program linker in the early 1950s, for the UNIVAC I. A program linker translates instructions from one language to another (for example, numerical codes that represent instructions translated to machine code that computers can read), which is the very foundation of how computerās operate independently. she also pulled a steve rogers and tried to enlist in the military a bunch of times and was denied. then, an exception was made for her when she joined the navy reserves, and she ended up serving for over 40 years (half of which was active duty). she retired from the navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper. she was born in NYC in 1906. Grace Hopper was a fucking badass.
also computing was typically a job for women (many of whom were black women that made incredible contributions) back in the day, so itās absolutely fucking wild that straight white men think they are the foundation of computer innovation. men PUSHED women out and took the credit.
Reblogging to do what the failed education system never did.
me while writing very niche fanfic: thereās literally no way that, like, anyone is going to read this. you are writing this for you and you alone. you must accept it. you must be zen about it. you must expect nothing except the validation that comes of being able to go back and reread it yourself when youāre in the mood for this kind of fic.
me after posting said very niche fanfic: (obsessively checks ao3 every thirty seconds)

Funny enough, thereās a long history of workerās struggle in the Appalachians and South.
Redneck Revolt is a good group organizing in these areas around this identity and history.
Yeah regions where mining, agriculture, and similar industries are dominant tend to have a history of socialist organizing and labor agitation, funny how that works
i love how many people are commenting on this basically saying itās an oxymoron for rednecks to be communists like⦠in what universe is it an oxymoron for⦠actual poor and working-class people⦠to be invested in an ideology & movement that centers around working-class/labor struggle⦠lmao ????
literally the only reason why there has been a shift in later years is cus of fear mongering to the point where capitalist criticism has become a taboo even for lower class poor people. like many the southern states are some of the poorest states in usa??
āLetās show these fascists what a couple of hillbillies can do!āĀ
-Woody Guthrie
coming from Ā a non-informed point of view i feel like once again this is Reaganās fault because he targeted workers unions a good dealā¦Ā
People are saying its a oxymoron because āredneckā is usually synonymous with āracist/stupid afā in america. And āracist/stupid afā in america tends to steer very far right.
But there is a actually a whole population of āredneckā that isnt racist at all. Theyāre actually pretty well educated, theyre just poor and do poor people stuff. Theyāre the ones who end up introducing black people to white people shit. Like moonshine, mudding and camping. Theyre a trip to hang around.
Theres actually a lot of overlap in the āredneckā and the āhoodā culture (large tight knit families, general disdain for authorities, love of bbqā¦etc), but the rich white people in power dont want people to know that because if the all the poor people reguardless of color realize they have shared interests band together and raise hell. Its over for the 1%. So they try their hardest to emphasize and exaggerate the cultural differences, in hopes of convincing the low income disenfranchized whites to vote right.
I LOVE capitalist critical Appalachian culture. One of the first things i learned that fueled my interest was the origin of the word āredneck.ā
Coal mining was HUGE from the mid 1700s to the early 1900s in states like Virginia and Pennsylvania as coal was a primary source of fuel for a lotta shit. Unsurprisingly, mine owners were capitalist pigs and exploited the hell outta coal miners. Like, paying them by the pound of coal they brought in rather than by hours worked, paying them in vouchers that could only be used at the store owned by the mining company, and offering no kind of health assistance when workers would inevitably succumb to illness and injury caused by the work they did. So miners began to unionize in the mid 1840s. To show solidarity and to make their employers take notice, unionists would wear red bandanas around their necks. And thus, the term āredneckā was coined to describe the union supporters who eventually dismantled a lot of the exploitive practices used by the coal industry.
Love these! Just discovered the hillbilly leftie podcast the Trillbilly Workerās Party, and I am so excited to see more leftist organizing in these parts. We have an amazing history of labor struggle, and a fair amount of labor wins, in this region.
also,Ā āredneckā in appalachia in the 20s-30s was used to mean ācommunistā because unionized workers would display their union affiliation by wearing a red bandana. hereās a jstor article about it
battle of blair mountainĀ is the largestĀ labor uprising in US history, and one of the origins of the term redneck, referring to the striking miners who wore red kerchiefs around their neck. apalachia has historically been one of the hearts of socialist movements in the US and thereās a reason history would rather paint them as backwards, racist, stupid and mean than let you remember that
Classism and anti-Southern elitism are used to divide the working class and push those with nascent leftist interests into liberal politics. Southerners are portrayed as biologically inferior, uneducated, homophobic, and racist despite being both a major site of labor disputes and the largest concentration of black Americans in the United States.
There have always been leftist movements throughout the South, anti-racist organizations and communities of LGBT people have worked for countless years to make the South a safer place to live for many marginalized groups. They are your comrades too, and we must work to overcome the longstanding state propaganda that stereotypes the people of the Southern United States as not worth helping and incapable of helping us.
āDogs donāt know what they look like. Dogs donāt even know what size they are. No doubt itās our fault, for breeding them into such weird shapes and sizes. My brotherās dachshund, standing tall at eight inches, would attack a Great Dane in the full conviction that she could tear it apart. When a little dog is assaulting its ankles the big dog often stands there looking confused ā āShould I eat it? Will it eat me? I am bigger than it, arenāt I?ā But then the Great Dane will come and try to sit in your lap and mash you flat, under the impression that it is a Peke-a-poo⦠Cats know exactly where they begin and end. When they walk slowly out the door that you are holding open for them, and pause, leaving their tail just an inch or two inside the door, they know it. They know you have to keep holding the door open. That is why their tail is there. It is a catās way of maintaining a relationship. Housecats know that they are small, and that it matters. When a cat meets a threatening dog and canāt make either a horizontal or a vertical escape, itāll suddenly triple its size, inflating itself into a sort of weird fur blowfish, and it may work, because the dog gets confused again ā āI thought that was a cat. Arenāt I bigger than cats? Will it eat me?ā ⦠A lot of us humans are like dogs: we really donāt know what size we are, how weāre shaped, what we look like. The most extreme example of this ignorance must be the people who design the seats on airplanes. At the other extreme, the people who have the most accurate, vivid sense of their own appearance may be dancers. What dancers look like is, after all, what they do.ā

Wake up call. (via charlieandbodie)
I grew up with a grandma who quilted, but sheād never been interested in passing along the hobby, so when she finally kicked it I was the grandkid who got all her materials, ācause I was the only one who knew how to use a sewing machine. Then, in 2015, a friend had a baby and I figured Iād make her a quilt, ācause how hard could it be?
oh
my
god
Luckily I am the stubbornest human alive, ācause I never woulda finished otherwise. I didnāt know what I was doing, didnāt know the terms to look up how to do anything, I musta reinvented the wheel like eight times and it took ten months, BUT I DID IT.
Figured Iād suffered enough and would never do it again and now Iām on quilt #9 smdh
āāāāāāāāā
Iām hyperventilating.
Holy shit. Holy SHIT.
This is INCREDIBLE.
Oh my god.
Iāve gotta go lay down holy shit look at this how do we just walk by other human beings every day and live our separate lives when thereās a person sitting next to you on the train or in line for coffee who goes home and makes things like this what even IS being human holy shit.
GOOD FUCKING JOB.
Oh heck I did not expect the notes to blow up on this, UM
Okay so on a purely technical level, this is not that difficult, you just gotta come at it a little sideways.
The background of this sucker is just rows of 1.5ā³-wide fabric strips. I canāt remember the exact pattern, but I wanna say it was something like one row 6ā³ strips, one row 4.5ā³ strips, one row alternating? I donāt remember exactly, it was a while ago. Thatās not difficult, you just lay it out and sew it all together one row at a time. Itās not hard, just tedious.
The fish are a lil different. I canāt draw, there is a disconnect somewhere and my hands are stupid, so I figured out probably fifteen years ago that tracing was the way to go. For this, I legit just yanked several photos of fancy-looking goldfish off the internet and traced over āem in Photoshop.
Once I had enough, I printed my outlines, laid āem out on the background to create the idea of movement, and then traced the outlines out on fabric and pinned the hell out of āem.
This woulda been WAY easier with Heat āN Bond, but I didnāt know that was a thing at the time. From there I just used just about every fancy stitch on my inherited sewing machine to make the fish STAY WHERE I PUT THEM, and also look good.
I have since learned this is called āraw edge appliqueā but whatever. Itās fun, itās neat, you can do it with a bunch of stuff and impress the hell outta people. More recently, itās how Iāve gone from this:
to this:
(this was another project I SUFFERED over unnecessarily, because Iām the dip that decided to quilt the waves, like a moron)
god that sucked but it looked SO COOL when I was done!
Iām very sorry to tell you that if you thought we would be less impressed with you after this update you were very mistaken. Iāll say again:
Holy. Shit.
My gender identity is basically ācis enough that Iām cool with my assigned gender in the abstract, but ambivalent enough that my gut reaction to being asked about it in contexts where I donāt feel itās immediately relevant is āand just what fucking business is it of yours?āā.
(This is basically the reason I never put my pronouns in my blog header, even though I understand the benefits of normalising that sort of thing; I donāt mind being referred to with he/him pronouns, but I reflexively resent the implication that disclosing that information should be socially obligatory.)
Gender: What are you, a cop?
Ay good news that's Demiboy

In the middle of lunch one day, everyone minding their own business in the cafeteria, a Senior guy dressed in a banana costume came in screaming. He was in clear DISTRESS. Flailing his arms and running in zig zags. He kept screaming things like āhelp me!ā and āheās going to get me!ā && we were all SO confused until all of a sudden a damn gorilla shows up (guy in suit, of course). He beats on his chest and lets out a huge roar, the banana lets out a shriek, and then itās ON. These two ran through our tiny cafeteria, the gorilla roaring and the banana frantically singing āI will survive.ā At one point the banana saw someone with a banana peel on their table (clearly they had ate a banana for lunch) and he took the peel from them and screamed āBROOOOTTHHHERRR!ā before returning to singing āI will surviveā in a much more determined tone.
It ended when our school principal took the gorilla down (yeah, tackled him to the ground, if you knew our principal youād understand⦠we were a school of like 300 people TOTAL and he was like all of our best friend. Dude was cool) and yelled, āThis is a banana safezone young man!ā
The following day, there were ābanana safezoneā posters everywhere and we had a school assembly where our guidance counselor talked about banana rights.
Iāve never looked at a banana the same.
welp. i was THISCLOSE to posting an adolescent āi hate everythingā post⦠and then i saw this.
