help me out here, people
I'm having a disagreement with my family, and it's turning into a whole Thing, so I turn to you, the fine people of tumblr
Have you ever heard the word "panopticon" before, and do you know (without looking it up!) what it means?
I have heard it before, and I know what it means
I've heard it before, but I don't know what it means
I haven't heard this word before, and I don't know what it means
Reblog for reach, and thank you in advance for your answers
#i respect what ur doing here but tumblr is not going to give you an accurate idea of whether the general public knows the word panopticon (via @doppelgangerleaverite)
I left this in reply to a comment several hours ago, but it's worth adding a fleshed out iteration to a reblog now as well:
Something I failed to sufficiently establish with this poll is that the ringleaders behind this kerfuffle consist of a.) Vocabulary Georg, and b.) Panopticon Boss (Air Transit & Radar Edition)
I learned the word "aficionado" at the age of seven, from someone who hasn't gotten a love letter in 35+ years, because she graded the last one like it was a student's homework assignment. Two of the three people involved in the discussion have graduate degrees in subject areas that absolutely would have addressed the concept at some point, and the third person recently learned the word from Love Island Tiktok (yet has the gall to make fun of me for being aware of it in the context of the modern surveillance state). I put it in my original tags too, but my mother's pre-retirement career trajectory has run the gamut from high school english teacher who taught units on authoritarian literature, to award-winning investigative reporter
I am VERY aware of the demographics at play here; this poll isn't so much to determine whether the "average" person knows the word, as to prove how much the over-educated, genius-level outliers I live with should be embarrassed for not knowing it. I am running this poll out of spite. :)
